Searches in generated Help Files

Hi,
I create help files for multiple customers from the same project. I have multiple table of contents with lots of topics that need to be customized for different customers. After I generate the help files I do a search as a test. The problem is that the Robohelp search result includes topics that I did not include in the table of contents.
thanks for your help

Hi Eileen
I'm hoping that you and all others that find this to be a problem will take a moment and file a bug with Adobe on it. I filed one for the Exclude from Search not working for CHM files, but got a note back stating something along the lines of "it's a limitation with the CHM format". Personally, I believe they can make it happen if they want to. After all, we can make it happen ourselves if we really want to put forth the effort. So the application needs to assist us by making it easier.
Cheers... Rick

  • Can I use RoboHelp to support localization and generate help files in multiple languages?

    Hi,
Can I use RoboHelp to support localization and generate help
    files in multiple languages?
Can I define a layout or template for RoboHelp to insert
localized strings into the template and generate a localized help
    file?
    Thanks!

Hi newbie_r and welcome to the RH community.
You don't say what version of RH you have but the latest
version (RH7) has Unicode Support that allows you to produce help
files in most languages. The exceptions are mainly the right to
    left languages (e.g. arabic, hebrew).
As far as the template is concerned, you can assign any text,
image to a template and it will be applied to any topics you assign
    the template to.
If you haven't already, I'd download the trial version and
experiment a bit. Set up a template with what you want and then
create a couple of simple help files containing just a few topics
each. That will reassure you of RH7s capabilities in this
    area.

  • RH7 Won't Display Generated help File

I've been generating basic help files for a year now. But for
some reason last night I decided to rearrange the contents in a
help system. After doing so I noticed that I could generate the
help once. When I closed it and later tried to reopen it (without
generating new) I got a message saying
"Cannot create compiled file. It may be open in another
window. Please close all HTML help windows and try again".
When you click the help generate button it looks as though it
is generating something but then nothing opens.
If you then access the help file (.chm) in the SSL folder and
click to open it by double-clicking on it the message says:
    "Cannot open the file mk:@MSITStore<filepath>
where <filepath> is the location of the .chm help file.
After the first experience of this, the help display issue
now happens with all of the help files and projects that I try to
open. These are files and projects that have been working fine till
    now.
Can anyone help? I'm due to finish a project in 2 days??
    Thanks

    Hi there
You might try this. First, enable the Output View by clicking
Tools > Options > General tab. Ensure there is a check mark
in the "Auto-show Output View" check box.
Click OK to dismiss the dialog.
Compile the CHM again. When you do, a new tab should display
near your Topic List pod. Scrutinize what is listed there as it may
provide a clue where the process if falling flat.

  • Community help search field ignores help files by default.

I tried to search for "Blending mode", then "Option Bar" in the main support page, with Community help targeted, and I don't get any hot from the help files. http://community.adobe.com/help/search.html?q=option+bar&lbl=photoshop_product_adobelr&hl= en_US&self=0&area=0
Must we now search from the help pages directly?
Edit: I see that the results from "Community Help" is checked, but, one MUST select also " Only Adobe Content" AND "Adobe Refernence Only" to have the ACH results on top... creating this search string: http://community.adobe.com/help/search.html?hl=en_US&q=option+bar&l=photoshop_product_adob elr&area=0&self=1&meta=site%3Dphotoshop_cs5_all
I do not remember having to click on three options to get ACH content...

Should be fixed now. Let me know if you still see the problem.
And big thanks for reporting it!

  • Robo 5 generated Help File (CHM) is not displaying the target Help page

    Hi,
I am using Robo 5. AFter generating the CHM file and linked to the target application, the CHM file is not displaying content for a specific page.
The concerned topic, for which the CHM is not displaying content, is included in TOC also.
When the target topic in the TOC is clicked, the CHM file is displaying the following message: Navigation to the webpage was canceled.
Can anybody tell me why it is happening like that?

Does it display OK if you open the help independently of the application?
If it does, then the problem has to be in the call.

  • Multi Help File Search

    Hi Guys,
I don't think this is possible without a great deal of
scripting knowledge, but I thought I would check before I say no to
my client. I have create 5 seperate Help files for a client all
with Flash output, what I now need to know is there any way a
creating a new single page file the I can use the search feature to
search all 5 help files & the display results. Pretty
complicated I know but one of those client that expects the world
but does not want to pay for it.
If anybody has any ideas I would be greatful (the output does
not have to stay a FlashHelp, we just used that for ease of
    distribution)
    Thanks in advance
    Mark Baker

    Mark -
I believe a merged WebHelp or .chm help system is what
you're looking for - when you merge projects, a full-text search
across help files is automatically included, provided you include
the Search tabs or buttons when generating.

  • Generating hlp files in RoboHelp HTML

Is it possible to generate .hlp files from RoboHelp HTML version 9? We're generating help files for an older program that only uses .hlp or .chm files. I've only been able to generate .hlp files from RoboHelp for Word, and I don't really want to use it any more. But I haven't been able to generate .hlp files from RoboHelp HTML.
    Thanks.

    Hello PP
I'll be happy to hazard a guess as to why RoboHelp doesn't "do" WinHelp. It has to do with the history of RoboHelp. Way back around 1992 or so, RoboHelp existed largely as a plug-in to Microsoft Word that made it a lot easier to create WinHelp files. Basically it was a set of macros that formatted the arcane coding necessary inside Word documents that made things work for the WinHelp compiler.
HTML emerged later on and the first version of RoboHelp HTML was born. This created an entirely new format and an entirely new application (RoboHelp HTML or RoboHTML) was born. HTML help was the new kid on the block. As such, I'm guessing the developers were sort of watching to see if or how much it would "catch on".
So the application code bases were totally different. And remain so to this day. As Microsoft has taken measures to try and dissuade folks from using WinHelp, I'm sure RoboHelp for Word is likely on life support and probably has been for some time. RoboHelp for Word and RoboHelp HTML work in totally different ways. And given the fact Microsoft wants WinHelp gone, it simply doesn't make any sense to expend effort on making RoboHelp HTML capable of outputting WinHelp.

  • Regarding Help file style

    Hi all,
I am new to RoboHelp. We created  "Application Help" project and generated .chm file sucessfully.Every thing is working fine with generated help file.
Check the MicrosoftWord2007 help file by click on F1.My client wants the same look and feel with my help file.
Does any one know if it is possible to generate the same look & feel help file with Adobe RoboHelp. If yes what type of project should i select from the availabe projects list and how can we generate?.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated....

Hi madhubmk and welcome to the RH community.
I dare say most of what MS offers could be achieved by RH. Bare in mind that MS can afford to throw resources into their help documentation to come up with a heavilly customised look and feel. That is something that most places can only dream of. MS help uses a customised window, lots of DHTML drop downs, custom icons, etc. all of which can be handled by RH. I'd go back to the client and get them to highlight exactly which elements they like and then go from there.

  • Lightroom 3 offline help file location?

I'm sure this has been answered 2 million times already in this forum but various searches ("offline lightroom help file") don't get me very far (I have found the URL for 2.0 though...). Checked the Lightroom FAQ and release notes too.
Any pointer will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
(shame on Adobe for making it so hard to find something so essential - what about a direct link to download this from the help menu?)

Top right corner of linked page http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/3.0/Using/index.html Click on pdf symbol to download.
It's also worth noting that when connected to internet above is the page you get taken to when you click Lightroom Help in the application Help menu or hit F1

  • Help files from a structured Frame book

Has anyone successfully generated help files from a
structured FrameMaker book. When attempting to generate Help from
my structured book, my CPU pegs out at 100% and doesn't move from
there. I'm not sure if my problem is my laptop, the way I
structured the book and files, or something else.
    Thanks.

    Hello Vivek,
I posted this sometime back in the forum, sorry about the reposting.. but I am hoping that you will have some answers.
I need to create a chm file using content from a Structured FrameMaker file- in other words, single source from Structured FM to RH.
My source file is a structured FM 9 document. When I import this into RoboHelp, I believe RoboHelp can pick the style information from Structured FrameMaker files and enable the style mapping. (http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2007/10/single_sourcing_from_framemake .html).
However, I am not able to figure out the settings required in RoboHelp to enable this mapping.
    Is the above possible?
    Best regards
    Urmi

  • Creating Dev 6.0 Help Files

Anyone know of a quick and easy way to generate help files for a Forms application. The Oracle doc suggested a 3rd Party solution. Is there anything like the Wizard or Calendar built-ins, and while I think of it, free would be nice too???
    Greg

John Davies - you're the man!
On xp Windows PM 7 I have produced a 60-page chapter for an illustrated book. The diagrams comprise a paper filled line rectangle, with a black filled rectangle behind it. The black rectangle is nudged to the right and to the bottom, to create a black drop shadow. I placed the eps diagram over it, to the front layer.
I need to produce pdf file. So, I generated a postscript file; then used Adobe 9 distiller to produce a pdf.
Everything is perfect up to page 28. After this page, all of the diagrams show the black rectangle through the paper-filled ones.
I have double-checked PageMaker diagrams, and even tried to generate just one of the rogue pages but it still shows the black rectangle in Adobe Reader. All text and fonts are perfect.
    Please, any help appreciated! Thanks

  • Crash on search function for HTML Help file (.chm) when connected to a Visual C++ application

Crash on search function for HTML Help file (.chm) when
connected to a Visual C++ application
I use the RH_ShowHelp API command to connect a HTML Help file
(.chm file generated by RoboHelp Word X 5) to my Visual C++
application. My application is able to call up this HTML help file
in context-sensitive mode and everything is working great in the
Contents and Index panels EXCEPT when I click on List Topics (after
I enter a KEYWORD for search) in the Search panel.
I got an error that said “Unhandled exception in
    xxxx.exe.(HHCTRL.OCX):0xC00000FD: Stack overflow”
I am able to execute this .chm file by itself and the search
function works well in this case. I am using HHActiveX.dll that is
created on 2/23/04. Is this the correct version?? Any advice what
    to do here??

Hi agschin and welcome to the RH forums. The hhactivex.dll
file is not used by the search function so you can rule that our.
Have you tried recompiling and seeing if the problem still happens?
You can also start the Bug Hunter feature in RH - View > Output
View and then select the Bug Hunter button - and see if that throws
    up any clues.

I've been making a number of imovies, which generates junk files and material that I should toss in the trash, but it is not clear to me  what items I can toss and which items I can't toss. Can you help? Using the imovie "help" support the system showed me under the menu item "go" where the "start up disc" should be - but that wasn't actually available on my menu!  Thanks for your help!

  • How do I generate a Word document and a PDF from Help files?

    Hi,
I am new to RoboHelp HTML, and am using version 8.  I updated some Help files, and now I want to generate output.  Here are my questions/ or the process I used:
To compile the help, I clicked Generate Primary Layout.  Is this correct?  I noticed that the date stamp on the xpj file has not changed.  The date is still from many months ago.  (Why is that?  Should it show a recent update date?)  However, the files that I updated do reflect the dates when I made the updates.  These include art files, an hhp, and htm, js, ldb, pss, cpd files.
To generate a pdf, I clicked Generate PDF.  I was not able to generate the PDF at first, but then, I enabled macros in Word 2007 (Trust Center Settings > Enable all macros...and clicked the checkbox, Trust access to the VBA project object model), and clicked Generate PDF.  At the end of the generation, I got this error in Word: Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  The info you were working on might be lost.  Word can try to recover it for you.  I closed the dialog and Word generated several blank documents.  Microsoft Office Diagnostics was run and found one problem and corrected it.  Despite the error message, a pdf was generated.  (If you could give me any insight on why I got the error messages, that could be helpful to know).
How do I generate a Word document?
    Thank you!
    Erin

    Welcome to our community
Note that RoboHelp is capable of creating a variety of layouts. WebHelp, FlashHelp, AIR Help, Microsoft HTML Help, JavaHelp, Oracle Help, ePub and more.
Any of these layouts may be nominated as the Primary layout. So when you generate the Primary layout, you get whatever has been configured as the Primary layout.
Only certain actions will result in a change to the .XPJ file. The actions are indicative of major changes to the project. So I wouldn't fret the fact that the date time stamp wasn't updated.
Indeed the Printed Documentation Single Source Layout recipe is what you use to create PDF. Generally what happens is that RoboHelp creates a Microsoft Word document as an intermediate file type, then creates the PDF from that. As you might imagine, there are a host of things that can go wrong during the process. I might suggest that you first get a Word document to generate cleanly. Then once you do that, focus on PDF. I know that I typically gen a Word document and stop there. I just open Word and use Word to create the PDF.
If you look at the properties for the Printed Documentation Single Source Layout recipe (View > Pods > Single Source Layouts then right-click the Printed Documentation layout and choose Properties) you will see that PDF, Word or both are options at the top of the dialog.
Hopefully that gives you a nudge in the right direction.
My fellow Adobe Community Expert Peter Grainge has excellent info on Printed Documentation on his site at Grainge.org. Click the link below for that.
