Searching a chm
Hi there,
Anyone know how you search a chm for special characters? In our product, we have a group template with a [S] suffix. And I have documented these group templates in my help file. But if I want to find this section in the chm, how do I search for [S]? Using quotes (or double qoutes) doesn't work.
Many thanks, Nicky
Searching for [S] suffix in a CHM should find the result. However can you clarify what you mean by "templates". It sounds like this is just text in a topic somewhere. Perhaps if you give us a more concrete example of what you are trying to search on and where it appears in the text.

Searching both CHM files and PDFs
Is there a tool that I can incorporate into our help system that would enable users to search both the CHM files and the PDFs?
Thanks for your help.
LyndaI use ZoomSearch for various things and as well as HTM files, it can search many other file types including PDF. However, it cannot search a CHM for technical reasons and I guess that would apply to other search tools. However, don't let that put you off searching, if you will forgive the pun.

X5 Search of CHM producing excess hits
Using Search on a compiled X5 project for the words "sales
administration" in quotes, is producing dozens of hits in which
neither word appears. It is also finding topics that do contain
those words as well. Older versions of our project were searching
correctly. What can I do to correct this?I don't do much import but if you are trying to import 537
documents in one go, nothing would surprise me. Have you tried one
at a time or a small batch at a time?
The bug you point to arose in 6 and was fixed so it is not
relevant.
My guess is it is down to memory and that most PCs would
baulk at 537 documents in one go. -

Changing transparency blend space
I have a bunch of InDesign files that were created for print that I now need to save with RGB colors at the behest of my ePub developer. I have a simple script to change my pantone spot swatches to RGB, but I want to add a line to that to change the documents' transparency blend space to RGB. Right now they're all using a CMYK blend space. I'm a scripting novice, obviously. Does anyone have a relevant example or suggestion? Thanks in advance.
@mcanespy – it's a preference:
app.documents[0].transparencyPreferences.blendingSpace = BlendingSpace.RGB;
You can easily spot things like that at:
http://www.jongware.com/idjshelp.html
Download and search the chm files.

Crash on search function for HTML Help file (.chm) when
connected to a Visual C++ application
I use the RH_ShowHelp API command to connect a HTML Help file
(.chm file generated by RoboHelp Word X 5) to my Visual C++
application. My application is able to call up this HTML help file
in context-sensitive mode and everything is working great in the
Contents and Index panels EXCEPT when I click on List Topics (after
I enter a KEYWORD for search) in the Search panel.
I got an error that said “Unhandled exception in
xxxx.exe.(HHCTRL.OCX):0xC00000FD: Stack overflow”
I am able to execute this .chm file by itself and the search
function works well in this case. I am using HHActiveX.dll that is
created on 2/23/04. Is this the correct version?? Any advice what
to do here??Hi agschin and welcome to the RH forums. The hhactivex.dll
file is not used by the search function so you can rule that our.
Have you tried recompiling and seeing if the problem still happens?
You can also start the Bug Hunter feature in RH - View > Output
View and then select the Bug Hunter button - and see if that throws
up any clues. -
How can I get the text search to work in my Robohelp 7 .chm?
The text search used to work but has stopped working.
The compile says it is "Generating full-text search data..." and I'm getting no errors.
This .chm is part of a merged .chm. The other merged .chms still have seaching ability.
I'm wondering if perhaps I'm running out of space. The .chm is 5,327 KBI gave up and repaired Robohelp 7. Now the text search works again. One possibility is that I damaged Robohelp 7 when I installed a trial copy of Robohelp 9 and then uninstalled the trial copy. Don't know for sure and I'm not willing to try it again just to find out. I'm just happy that I've got it working again.

How can I remove the Location column from the search results in a .chm file?
How can I remove the Location column from the search results in a .chm file?
I generated the file in Robohelp HTML 9.
As far as I know it's used when you've combined more than one source into the final help file. It is possible (though I don't remember doing it) that I did that once a couple of years ago but now I'm only using one source - the project that's generating the .chm.
Can anyone tell me how I can remove it?
Thanks
TomIn Project Setup look at the Window properties. I think you will find Advanced Search is ticked.

When using the Search tab in CHM file, I would like users to search and find results only from the TOC list of topics rather than all the topics that are available in the project. For example, there are few incorrectly named HTML pages with incorrect content. I do not want these to appear in search results as they are not part of TOC. (I can delete these pages, but would liketo keep them for some content re-use).
Can anybody guide me on this?
Thanks.Hi there
Try renaming the pages from using .HTM so that they use .XHTM instead.

I opened an old WinHelp project into my new RoboHelp 7. When
I generate the CHM, even with the Project Settings in RoboHelp set
to French and running in a French Windows operating system (MS
Windows XP Pro 2002 SP 2), the CHM output is still in English. The
buttons display in English (Contents, Index, Search, Print, Hide
buttons). The title bar of the CHM also says "HTML
Help" even though the project title in the Project
Settings is "Aide en ligne...".
My Windows Regional Settings through the Control Panel -
Regional Options tab is set French (France). On the Languages tab I
under Text Services and Input Languages, Details button, I selected
French (France) French. On the Advanced tab I selected French. Then
I rebooted.
On the language bar on my Task pane, I selected FR. The CHM
still displays in English.
Please help! I have to produce 4 CHMS in languages other than
English today.
Thanks!GinaL, would you be able to give us an update? Did the CHM
files look ok on a PC with a true French OS installed?
To avoid having to rewrite everything, I've written the
following info/instructions for my team -- though I'm not yet sure
they're 100% correct:
After I reported this issue to Adobe, they worked on the
problem for several days. They even sent me a new
HtmSingleSourceHtmlHelp.dll file that was supposed to solve the
problem. But it didn't work correctly. No matter what contortions
we put ourselves through, we couldn't get both of these items
correct in the CHM file at the same time, namely:
Index compiled in correct alphabetical order accdg to the
language of the help project.
Correctly translated help title showing in the caption,
regardless of the user's Windows regional settings. (For example,
we wanted "FORMS-Hilfe zu FORMS 5-3" to appear as the caption of
the German version of FORMS help, even if our regional settings
were set to English.)
I think we'd all agree that the index has to be in
alphabetical order. So from what I've seen, this is what we have to
do when compiling a non-English version of help using RH7:
1. Set up the project with the foreign name.
2. Set the language in the project settings. And in the
Project Settings dialog, click Advanced and check out the LNG File
tab to make sure it's using a translated version.
3. Ensure that the Window Caption setting is correct in each
window included in the project. (On RoboHelp's Project tab, open
the Windows folder, double-click each window in turn, and check the
settings.)
4. Set the Language setting in the HHP file to Language=[hex
value for that language]. I found a bunch of them listed on this
web page. Someone else might be able to find a better source:
https://svn.origo.ethz.ch/scoop/es_scoop_60/library/i18n/locale/nls/i18n_nls_lcid_tools.e
5. Change your Windows regional settings to the same language
as the help project. (Reboot if prompted.)
6. Recommended, for safety's sake: Delete the CPD file.
7. Open the project and compile using RH7.
8. Check the index's sort order -- is it in alphabetical
order according to the language of the project?
9. Check the help caption -- make sure it's not "HTML Help".
Note: Any customized buttons in your CHM should appear
correctly translated, but other buttons (Contents, Index, Search)
still appear in English -- at least they do on my PC, even though I
did step 2 above. We need to check whether those buttons appear
correctly when the PC is actually running a true foreign version of
Windows, and not just with temporarily adjusted Windows settings.
OR -- is anyone else able to get these to appear translated in the
CHM file?
Does anyone have anything to add? Other solutions? Easier
procedures? Better results to report?
Thank you

Trouble with CHM Search & Index after Importing Word Document
Greetings,
I have recently inherited all things RoboHelp at work, but the last person to work with our projects left 6 months ago. I received a brief overview of how our CHM files were generated from the same word document in RH HTML 7.
Currently, I am using RoboHelp HTML 9, but am having trouble with the Index and Search functionality from an imported Word 2003 (.doc) file. During my import, only a single topic is created and named after the source document. I believe this may be the root of my problems, but haven't had much luck with a solution.
I have stumbled my way through setting after setting, but feel I am missing something obvious. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken
Background:
Our source documents have a working TOC and Heading 1-3 structure. When creating a new project and importing the document, the TOC is imported correctly. The TOC navigations links seem to function correctly.
I have used the Smart Index Wizard to find new keywords from topic titles and topic text. Unfortunately it seems the import only creates a single topic named after the source word document and therefore associates all keywords with the single topic. when trying to navigate the index after the CHM is generated, all links simply reference the beginning of the document.
When using the search feature in the CHM, only a single result is returned for any search words. This result is always the single topic as described above. The results link always returns you to the start of the document but does highlight the keyword throughout the document. When you import there is an Advanced button in one of the dialogs. Click that and you will be able to Paginate against chosen styles. That will break your document into topics.

How to apply conditional build tags to the topic title that is displayed in Search tab of CHM?
I have the project in which 2 different words are used to reffer to one objects (this word/term depends on the customer). All other information related to functionality, steps, etc. are common. So:
In the help content (body of the files), I created 2 conditional build tags (CBT) for these terms.
In TOC, if topic title contains the term, I created 2 different topics reffered to the single topic file, but the title of the topic shows correct term (depends on CBT).
File names of this topics contain only term1.
The problem occurs when I generate CHM for CBT2 and search for the term1 (marked with CBT1) using the Search tab. All occurrencies where term1 presence in the file name, appear in the found results.
How can I resolve the issue?
These topics must be found by search (that's why "Exclude from search" option is not a decision).Ahhh, you are correct. I believe it was Version 10 introduced that.
So here's what I'd suggest. Even though you are unable to use a variable in a Topic Title, it can still be used in other places such as the TOC, the Index and in the Topic content. So I'd still recommend that you declare and use a variable for those items. Just to simplify things.
As for any topics that have the term in the title, you could create two topics. One with the term one way and the other with the term the opposite way. Then use a Conditional Build Tag to exclude and remove the one that shouldn't be found.
This may cause you a bit of a maintenance issue by having the same topic content in more than one place. (one for each topic)
So to overcome that, you would be able to add the main body information to a topic and use an Inline Frame in the two topics that would then simply be shells with appropriate Topic Titles. Either that or declare a snippet and use the snippet in both topics. Put the main part in the snippet.

Is there a way to exclude a chm file from the Search? The chm
file in question must be in the same folder as the master chm.
However, it is not in the merge files section (not a child of the
master).Hi ghostwriter62
With .CHM files, search only works inside the .CHM you have
open. So if the .CHM hasn't been included as part of a merged
setup, its contents aren't (or I suppose I should say "shouldn't")
be factored into the mix.

Search tab has stopped working in .CHMs
I maintain several .CHMs for a client. For a reason I can't
figure out, the Search tab of any .CHM that I've updated recently
no longer works. Any search attempt results in "No topics found." I
verified that any older versions of .CHMs have working Search tabs,
but any .CHM that I've updated this year no longer has a working
Search tab. I even took one of last year's projects, made
absolutely no changes, recompiled, and voila, Search is broken.
I have verified that I've got all settings set correctly on
the Windows Properties dialog, plus all required .DLLs are
correctly installed and registered.
The only change to my setup is that I upgraded to IE7.0
(finally!) earlier this year. And I've kept up with all Windows
updates. I have been using and continue to use RoboHelp HTML
X5.0.2. (I have not upgraded because, in my opinion, it was not
worth my $500. I'm self-employed and am holding out for a more
robust upgrade.)
Any ideas? Frankly, I assume that a Microsoft upgrade has
messed up the works and I'm stuck, unless I shell out bucks....
Nita BeckThanks very much for the reply, Author Care! As I said, even
for a project whose Search tab had been working and for which I
made absolutely no changes, recompiling that project now yields a
broken Search tab... Wassup with that??!!!
Including only an Index is not practical for the particular
Help system I'm working on today. It's loaded with esoteric terms
and strings of numbers (thousands and thousands) that users must be
able to (and, up until now, have been able to) search for, and it's
quite useful that found search terms are highlighted in the found
topics. There's no way that the Index in this case can replace the
functionality offered by Search. They are complementary
features. -
Search stopped working in CHMs compiled using RH 8.0.2
Today I noticed that the Search functionality had stopped working in CHMs that I recently compiled using RH 8.0.2. I'm sure they were all working pretty recently but can't say exactly when it stopped working.
As a test, I created a test HTML Help project with default settings, and wrote three short topics. When I compiled it, there was not even a search button/tab, nor were there any others, even though Contents, Index, Search, and Glossary are all selected in the "Window Properties (WebHelp Pro)" dialog. (Since when do these settings apply only to WebHelp Pro?)
I was so surprised that I thought I must have done something wrong, and repeated the experiment -- with the same result.
The only thing I can recall doing on my computer is uninstalling Microsoft Visual Studio. Surely that couldn't have had this effect?
Also, there was a "Security Update for Office 2003 (KB976382): VBE6" and a "Security Update for Windows XP (KB978542)", both on May 12.
Any ideas what could be wrong? ThanksDo you have a window specifically for CHM files? Beware your window characteristics are taken from your default single source layout, so if you have that set as WebHelp Pro and use it when compiling a CHM you are likely to get odd results. You'll need to change the default SSL to MS HTML Help, create the new window and (if you want) reset the default SSL back to WebHelp Pro.
