Searching by album name

In the past, I have been able to use the standard iPhoto search function (bottom right) to search for words in iPhoto albums. I can still search and find words in albums I created some tijme ago but for some reason, it's stopped working for all new albums I create.
I select a few photo, press the plus sign, give the new album a unique name like "zanidu" and click OK. I then go back to view "Library", then do a search for "zanidu." I get nothing.
I suspect something in corrupt. I've rebuilt everything (even the rebuilding that take hours) and that has not repaired the problem.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
That search function is controlled by Spotlight, and it sounds like your Spotlight is not indexing the Library.
Go to System Preferences -> Spotlight and add the iPhoto Library Folder to the Privacy Pane. Leave it there a few moments and then remove it again. This will force Spotlight to re-index the Library.
Remember to leave it time to re-index before testing it.

    Hi Spam_Valley,
I understand that you are having issues with your music displaying correctly. This may be an issues with the metadata stored within that song, and iTunes interpretation of that info.
We may need to repair this. See the following resources for information:

  • In iTunes 11.0.2.26, an Albums search by track names returns albums as if they only have one track on them, but I still want to access the entire album. How can I have the search results show the entire album (with just the searched for name highlighted)?

    Hello, all.
In iTunes 11.0.2.26, an Albums search by track names returns albums as if they only have one track on them, but I still want to access the entire album. How can I have the search results show the entire album (with just the searched for name highlighted)? For instance, I'm wanting to play an album with a particular track on it or I'm searching for albums that include that track. iTunes incorrectly assumes that all I'm after is that one track and then incorrectly displays the album as if there is only one ttrack on it. This is a bonkers default setting. Can I change this?

Click the search magnifying glass and uncheck "Search entire library".
Type in the name of the track.
Click the album of interest to show tracks.
    Select the track.
Press the X in the search box to clear the search.
Double click the track you want to start playing first.

  • Is it possible to search for albums by artists name?

I am new to mac and have only had one and my ipod touch for a couple of weeks, so this may be a simple question or might not be possible. Is there a way of being able to search for albums, but to do it with the artists name rather than the albums name. This is because I have a lot of dj sets on my ipod which when I am looking through for a set to put on and not sure what to put on I either have to search in artist and in that list lots of the artists don't have albums or full sets they are just songs on compilations, so I have a lot of names in the list I don't wont. If I search for albums then It is the Compilation names which will put the same artist scattered all through the list. The only way I think I could do this is to rename all my albums with the pre-fix of the artists name, but would list all the albums and there may be 20 or so albums by the same artist so again a big lists. I hope I'm explaining myself enough so someone can understand what I'm trying to do, and can give me some ideas of what to do.

The only way I can think of doing it is to create a play list for each artist then a could search through the artists names in playlists.
Why not simply search thru the Artists list? Or the Album list?
Besides, if you created a playlist for an artist, it only shows the songs, not the albums for that artist.
Don't clog up & slow down iTunes and your iPod by unecessarily duplicating info.
Tap Artists and it will show you all the artists.
Tap a specific Artist and it will list the albums for that artist.

  • If I have a pic in more than one album, does iPhoto make more than one copy of that pic?  When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.

If I have a pic in more than one album, does iPhoto make more than one copy of that pic?  When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.

No it doesn't. Albums simply reference the photos in the Library. A single shot can be in 100 albus and use no extra disk space at all.
If you have the same shot in two Events then yes, the file is duplicated.
When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.
The Finder doesn't really understand the iPhoto Library. It's quite possible for the iPhoto Library to contain many files with the same name. The Library also contains different versions of the same shot - thumbnail, originals and edited version. This is normal.

  • After downloading to my IPOD, the songs are shown but are also seperated by the album names. Is there a way to not show these album names on the IPOD? I just want to see song titles and nothing else! S

After sync'ing my IPOD, the songs on my IPOD are separated by the album names from which they were downloaded from. Can I get rid of those album names on my IPOD somehow?  I'd like to show nothing but the songs as I search thru the artists......

  • Is there any possible way to set your itunes to just show the album name without the songs included in the album in artist view. and then be able to select the album to expand all the songs. this would be ideal as I have many albums under certain artists

I use to use windows media player. The layout was great. It would have icons (one of the album artwork inside the folder) for the artists. you could click on the artist and it would have the icons for all of the albums (similar to itunes) however it would not have all the songs included in that album listed underneath or within it. you had to click on the icon for the album to go into that particular album to view the songs. In my personal opinion this was much easier to search for a particular album especially if you had many albums under one artist as I do. I collect live concert recordings for several particular bands. It would be really nice if itunes would allow you to contract the songs names within each album under artist view and have some way to exand them or open a seperate album folder when clicking on the album name through artist view. is this even possible. does anyone know a way to allow this is happen. you would make a serious music collector very happy. I know this is a crazy request but for people who are serious music collectors like myself with over a TB of music it is much easier to consolidate each individual album under each individual artist for faster searching/viewing needs

You are describing an iTunes problem, not an iPod touch problem. Try posing in the iTunes forum.

  • Applying Album names to Comments field in iPhoto 6

I was never in the habit of applying anything to photo comments, but gave my albums a desriptive name so I knew what they were. However album titles are not searchable. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to create an Automator workflow or Applescript that could take the Album Name and apply it to the comments field for each picture in the album. I have over 25,000 pictures and quite a few albums. I've started to do it manually for each album but would love to find a quicker way to accomplish this.
    Thanks.

    Hi elenting,
It must be done within iPhoto. I started doing that awhile ago so I could find images in an album by doing a spotlight search for the album.
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
I've also go to mention a useful widget called "iPhoto mini widget"
This widget will show you all images within it's viewer in an album.
for the image you are currently viewing , go to the Gear icon (menu" and you can choose to "open in" Preview, Mail, Safari or custom. It's pretty handy to choose an image and have it open in Mail to send.

  • 7 good reasons, why artist=album name is not the solution for compilations

    Hi,
in this forum everytime the compilations-problem is discussed, somebody comes up with the solution to fill the album-name into the artist name field and to set the song-title name to "Artist / Song-Title". This might help with the cover-flow issue but does have the following downsides:
7 good reasons, why artist=album name is no alternative for compilations
    ========================================================================
    1) It messes up the artist search.
    2) Unability to turn the display of artists on compilations on or off on demand without changing all the tags
    3) The mp3 tags are not used in the standard way
    4) "Artist / Song-Title" as song-title name is often too long to display
    5) The album name appears twice in the song information display when the song is playing (as the artist name and as the album name)
    6) This is not consistent with how it works in iTunes
    7) People owning a lot of compilations are forced to do A LOT of manual changes only to "fix it" back when (hopefully soon) a new firmware fixing this issue arrives
I already posted this as an answer in another thread but I thought it might be helpful to discuss this in an own thread. What do you think about the reasons? Can you add additional reasons?
If Apple really left out the compilations-flag on purpose (see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5401783#5401783) we might need some good arguments to bring it back in.
    Best regards, Jens

Yes, I agree with your list. I also think it is inconceivable that Apple simply forgot to add the compilations feature. There obviously has to be a good reason for this. However, I haven't got a clue what that reason might be.

  • Multiple album name for one mp3

is it possible to tag the one mp3 with multiple album names?eg.most artists have greatest hits albums with their studio albums so the itunes user has to choose which one to delete from the library thus causing one or the other album to be incomplete if you burn it to cd.
one mp3 file on hard drive with 2 album tags would be good as it would save part listings

This is not an iTunes specific issue it applies to all media managers (e.g WMP).
The meta tags in MP3 (or other formats) only let you tag it with a single album name. I understand what you are getting at as a specific track might be in an album and then reissued as part of a greatest hits, and then as for example part of a "Now That's What I Call Music Volume n" type album. Storing one copy would save space.
However the files do not have this capability and disk space is cheap so who cares?
It is also the case the often the tracks are very slightly different, you can see this when you search for a track on the iTunes Store and often you will get several results (from different albums) and they have slightly different durations. They may have been remixed or re-recorded by the band at a different date.

  • Import from Picasa - Album names

I'm in the process of migrating from Picasa to Lightroom and have a number of questions.  I'm posing these separately to help others search later Should the thread be worthwhile.
One is:   Is there a way to get the Picasa album name into metadata somehow (presumably as a keyword)?
I will be setting a keyword to indicate the images come from Picasa.

Please bear with me, I think you have compressed a couple of steps.
You're suggesting that Picasa is embeding the album name in 'the' image file, either the edited copy or an exported version?
And that there is noting in LR or plug-ins to directly grab this data, rather I have to spelunk around the picasa forums & docs.
Ive been using Picasa in a somewhat unthoughtful manner (I suspect like many), both for library organisation and for most simple image adjustments.
Typically, after import from camera, basic adjustments are made, bad images deleted.
For  'events' (a vacation or Christmas) Id create an album and copy the non reject images there.  (Sometimes from 2, and on a couple of occasions, 3, cameras).
Then for major events, Id create a 'best of' album inside that.   The edits in the different albums may differ (mainly cropping).
My basic migration plan was to move the various image folders under one umbrella (using windows) then import that folder in one go to LR.
Ideally, in order not to lose anything Id like to import the whole mess as is.   Particularly including the original which handily are in a distinct folder.  However that leads to what was going to be the next question.
Am I correct that fundamentally Lightroom will be importing image folders (that happen to have been handled by Picasa)?  Thus folders will contain images in 3 states
    - unedited, ie original
    - edited but edits not saved, image file is still original
    - edited and saved, original image moved to 'originals' folder, and current image file updated.
Just to complicate things, because for a long time I did not fully understand how to use non-destructive editing, I would create different versions of an image with different file names as I experimented with different edits.   I dont expect to weed out those duplicates on migration; for the major collections Ill deal with it in Lightroom.  (many duplicates will just be deleted - but this is a rainy Sunday project to clean house).
So the next question is - how can I tell in LR what the 'status' of an image is (other than in the originals folder which is easy)?
Presumably a preparatory step is to make sure Picasa has saved all edits back to the folder.   (Select all images in entire Picasa library and 'save' ?)
At least the second category is then eliminated.
I imagine Im not the only one with this kind of mess... my next question is, are there standard approaches to the migration process?   I think my goals are, in order:
    - not to lose any originals
    - to be able to get to the original of any image with certainty
    - where possible to also have the latest / best picasa edited version

  • N97 mini, deleted music files but album names stil...

Hi, I deleted all the "unsatisfactory" music that was preloaded on my e71 mini using the delete function in the music player and it said the files were deleted but it still shows the album names.
I read on these forums that this can be solved by deleting private\101FFC31 and
private\101ffca9 and refreshing the library but I cannot even locate these files.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
This worked for me. on N97 mini.  You may have to search for the files. It works for music and podcasts. If you cant do it, you could put the music back in and delete it again.
    * Firstly, connect your phone to a PC via USB.
    * Choose Data Transfer (a.k.a. Mass Storage). Do not select PC Suite because you won’t be able to browse protected folders in PC Suite mode.
    * Open Windows Explorer on your PC.
    * Go to \private\101FFC31 on the phone’s folder.
    * There, you should be able to find the mpxv1.mpd (for MP3) and pcv5.mpd (for AUDIO PODCAST)
    * Goto \private\101f8857\Cache
    * Goto \private\101ffca9
    * In all the 3 folders delete all the files Not the FOLDER
    * Now refresh ur music library

  • Find word in album name in iphoto

Is it possible to search / find an album that I created in iphoto - i.e. can I search by a word that I used in the album name?
I don't remember the date I took the photo but I remember what I called the album.  I have 44,000+ photos and have organized them by albums.
    thanks

That's what I have to do, except that I have about 25 folders, each with about 100 albums and it takes forever.  I was just looking for an easy way to search by a word in an album title.  I don't change the name of every photo so I can't search by photo name.
My albums are titled with the date then the name, so I don't think a sort would help (although I can't find how you can sort albums if you would pass that along that would be nice.)
You would think there would be a way to search for an album name?
    thanks.

  • Folder and Album names onto CD

Please bear with me.  I did this before and now I can't figure out how.  Such are the ravages of aging brains.
I'm trying to copy the music from my old vinyls to CDs I can play in my car.  I have software and a USB connection that let me get the music onto my computer in MP3 form.  Plays back OK on the computer.  I created a playlist in iTunes with a bunch of songs and used iTunes to burn the music onto a CD.  Works fine.
Here's the problem:  I have 116 songs on one CD that display a title when they play, but there is no other organization.  I did this once before with a bunch of other albums and when I playback the display shows a folder name and an album name.  That way I can skip an entire album or artist easily to get to what I want instead of advancing song by song through dozens and dozens.
The new CD I created doesn't have that info, just Unknown Folder or Unknown Album.  Looking at the Properties of the mp3s I created, all the Details/Media are filled in, i.e., Artists, Album Artist, Album, even Year, #, Genre and Length.
    What am I missing?

    Lucky Eddie,
You are remembering correctly.  Before you burn the MP3 CD, sort the playlist by Album.  That will cause iTunes to burn the MP3 CD with the songs in an Artist/Album structure.
For more information, see this document:
iTunes: How to set the play order of songs on an MP3 CD
Look especially at the section "How to burn by album."
