Searching by keyword in Bridge CS4

I'm in the process of keywording my files, but so far I find that I can only search--or "filter"--by keyword in one file at a time, which isn't all that useful to me. Can I search my entire My Pictures file, for example, by keyword and have Bridge select images from different files in one search?

Assuming CS4 has same search as CS3 you have to start your "look in" search in a directory that is above any that you want to search.

  • Problems with keywording in Bridge CS4

    Hi,
I am using Bridge CS4 to add keywords and captions (descriptions) to my photos. However, I have noticed that when I change the photos from location, from one folder to another, Bridge cannot recognize the keywords anymore (no problem with the captions). The same happens if I change the name of the folder where the photos are in. This problem happens if I do those folder changes outside Bridge AND also INSIDE Bridge.
However other programs (Picasa, Windows7 AND surprisingly Photoshop CS4) will recognize the keywords after those folder changes.
Can someone help me with this Bridge problem ? is this a well known bug ?
    Anthony

i have tried with 2 out of the 3 options. I cannot purge the cache, i will then loose all the information (labels, ratings,...) on my big database (160,000 images). (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/331/331083.html)
    It did not work ;-(
Another very strange thing, i noticed that the 10% of pictures that were not affected by the problem are in 99% of the cases vertical (portrait pictures)...
Thanks for trying to help !

  • Filtering keywords in Bridge CS4

I have several folders keyworded within a folder called "master list" on my desktop. How should I proceed (step by step, if possible) to filter all the files in that "master list" file by keyword? So far I have only been able to filter by keyword once I am in a folder that is at the bottom of the hierarchy, and then of course, the filter only works on that folder. But keywords won't be at all useful to me if I can do more than one folder at once. By the way, I posed this question earlier and was told to go to the folder above the one I want to "search" (which I think means the same thing as "filter") but starting from desktop or from the folder "master list" or even one of the sub-folders in master list, I get no filtering by keyword. I can only make it work when I go to the file I know the keywords are in. Thanks so much for your help as I really need to make this feature work for me!

Sharon - have never used the filter function so can't offer any comments on that.
In the Find window you can search for more than one keyword at a time by clicking the "+" in the criteria field. This adds another line or lines as needed. But be careful with that and the match field. If you have "all criteria met" checked then all conditions of each line in the criteria listed have to be met exactly to get a hit.
Make sure you have the box at bottom "include all sub-folders" checked. If you check "include all non-indexed folders" it can be very slow as it goes in and re-indexes all the folders.
If you don't get a hit where you think you should, and the non-indexed box is not checked, make sure the folders you want to search are indexed. You can do that by visiting the folder and waiting until the spinning arrow at bottom left corner has stopped. There may be a simpler way I am not aware of.
Hope this helps and not confuses.

  • Bridge CS4 Search Not Displaying NEF Files + Keyword Problems

Hello, I am hoping someone can be of service to peculiar problem that apparently nobody else has had.
I am running Adobe Bridge CS4 (came bundled with Photoshop Elements 8) on a 2009 24 inch iMac with 4GB RAM and a 2.6mHz processor running Snow Leopard v10.6.2.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar
    file.
Two days I ago I changed something in Preferences->Metadata and the next time I started Bridge CS4 and used the loupe tool on a NEF
file, it took longer than usual for the preview to come up and when it did, it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw. I quit the program and the next time I started Bridge, it crashed upon using the loupe tool. I looked up help on Adobe's website and it appeared I had corrupted preferences. Per Adobe's instructions I option clicked at Bridge startup to delete the preferences and purge the cache.
Everything appeared to be normal until today when I searched for a keyword and got 36 random results when I know I have hundreds of
photos tagged with that particular keyword. I started typing in other keywords and getting the same sort of results- very limited numbers of photos I have hundreds of. I always include all subfolders in all searches and used every search method available through Bridge to no avail. The searches always came up with a fraction of the photos I actually have tagged.
I then verified and repaired all disk permissions from the operating system installation CD and Bridge started returning results as
usual. However, when I clicked on an individual file in the Content pane, some of my Keywords started to appear in italics below the rest of my Keyword tree. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to why some images will return the Keywords normally and others in italics. Also, sometime the italicized keyword tree will include keywords I edited due to typos and thus no longer existing my normal Keyword tree. I gave the "Make Persistent" command a try. It converts the italics to regular case, but it also doubles the tag so I now have two of that tag (one in the normal keyword tree, and the now converted italics keyword tree.)
Now I'm noticing that all my search results are not including NEF files; just JPEG and the occasional DNG file that I made through Adobe Camera RAW. I'm not sure if this has been the case throughout my problem or if I just noticed it late.
Regarding not displaying NEF files in searches, it appears that it will default to displaying JPEG if it has the option because as of lately I have only been shooting RAW and some of those files are showing up in the still-wonky searches (still displaying random or no photos of keywords.) However, if I manually navigate to a file, I can open and edit NEF files with no problem, they just don't display in any search modes.
Here's two short videos of what happens when I navigate a folder with NEF files by manually searching:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDjUDZzULKQ
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y9HkDK7DCs
When I click on a NEF file, the one ahead of it in Content view processes into a more contrasty image and the loupe tool previews jump between 100% and 400% and then change to 100% when dragged or they just process themselves right then and there.

I am running Adobe Bridge CS4 (came bundled with Photoshop Elements 8) on a 2009 24 inch iMac with 4GB RAM and a 2.6mHz processor running Snow Leopard v10.6.2.
Snow Leopard and Bridge CS4 do have some issues. Some have no problems and others have much problems I'm afraid.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar file.
To my knowledge the keywords are written into the XMP Metadata that is saved in the IPTC section of file itself, the XMP data in the sidecar file contain the changes you made in ACR. In other words, the keywords you have added should still be there.
Also see this Knowledge Base article about Keywords:

Changes metadata in prefs only affects the visability of the fields in the metadata panel. put or deselect a checkmark in front of an option will let you see or not see the field in this panel, the actual data and fields ar still in the file.
it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw.
You can change the magnification for the loupe to 100 / 200 / 400 and 800 % using the scrollwheel or with loupe active the + and - keys. Bridge shows the settings that you made in ACR. If you have changed the default Camera Raw setting it will also change the thumbs for this file. A thumbs needs some time to be cached. First it shows with a black border around, when first cached it shows the embedded preview and in the second round it renders the ACR settings and High Quality preview (if you have not disabled this setting). Caching needs some time.

Maybe you need to let the indexing in find do its work again but it might also be a snow leopard issue. Try an other app (Digital Asset Management like Expresion Media or  Portfolio) to check about the keywording and find. You can use a trial version for several days. You have several options to use find keywords. In the panel itself, in the filterpanel uner the keyword tab, when clicking on a visible keyword it only shows the files with that keyword or in the menu Edit / find (shortcut cmd + F) explore the options in this menu and also choose include non indexed and let Bridge start to index your files again.
However, when I clicked on an individual file in the Content pane, some of my Keywords started to appear in italics below the rest of my Keyword tree. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to why some images will return the Keywords normally and others in italics. Don't know about that.

As you can see the black border around some file that disappear after a while or when you select them they have not been cached. You used purge cache so most of your earlier cached results are gone and need to rebuild.

  • Bridge CS4 - I still can't move keywords for stock photos

    I'm on a Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, 4G RAM.
I buy a lot of stock photos. The stock photo companies have thoughtfully assigned a bunch of keywords to the photos, sometimes in other languages that I don't really speak. Photos.com is notorious for applying keywords that have nothing to do with the photo, as evidenced my my searches for certain keywords. I wish they'd all stop doing this.
When these photos are opened, their keywords appear under "Other Keywords." I can make the keyword permanent under "Other Keywords," but I am unable to drag the keyword(s) into the main keyword list in an effort to GET RID OF this "Other Keywords" list.
I was hoping this was addressed in Bridge CS4, but of course it wasn't...UNLESS...
someone here knows how to do it?

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.

  • Can't Search PDFs in Bridge CS4??

I was considering using Bridge CS4 to manage my thousands of PDF documents, but have run across a problem on Win 7 64-bit.  Searching the fulltext of PDFs in bridge always yields no documents -- even if I choose to use Windows Search.   I have the proper ifilter set up to do fulltext searches of PDFs, and fulltext search does work if I just use the windows search box from the start menu, but it absolutely does not work work in bridge at all.
    Any idea why?
    thanks

OK, I think I see what you are saying now.
When you click search with Windows on the Bridge toolbar can you see it searching through the folders?
As a test try a search for a metadata item like a keyword and see it the Windows search turns that up.  It may indeed be a bug if the nothing shows up.
Win7 and CS4 were not built to run together and there are still things to fix.  But with CS5 due out shortly, who knows how much effort they will put into that effort.

  • Bridge CS4 search returns No items to display

A find search for "keyword contains" returns a partial list of files using a parent keyword, and returns "No items to display" for specific child keywords missing from the parent keyword "find".
I have deleted and reapplied the keywords in the missing files and reindexed all of my files afterwards.  The same files are still missing from a parent keyword search and from a specific child keyword search.
I upgraded from CS2, and had no similar problems under CS2.  Both CS4 and my OS, WinXP Pro, are updated to date.
    Any ideas?  Thank you.
(I mistakenly posted this to an old similar named problem under the Bridge Mac discussion group; there was no effective solution offered there.)

    Curt,
No difference at first, but, a new observation and resolution.  The suggested Keywords, Find..., search procedure continued to ignore/overlook all of the previously missing files.
Observation:  All of the missing files are contained in one subfolder named, Oregon.  Any Find continues to return no items from this subfolder.
Resolution:  I renamed folder Oregon to Oregonx, created a new folder named Oregon, and copied all files from the old folder, Oregonx, to the new folder, Oregon.
Find under Oregon = No items
Find under Oregonx = all files containing the keyword.
I tested this result by renaming the new folder, Oregon, to Oregon1.  Find under Oregon1 = all files containing the keyword.
Finally, I reran the global Edit, Find..., across all folders = all files containing the required keyword.
    Go figure!
Thank you for the suggestions and persistence.

The Bridge General Discussion can give you the specifics of transferring your information over to Bridge CS6.

  • Can I use Bridge CS4 Keyword File in PE10?

I have a nice structured keyword list in PE8's Bridge CS4; I want to use it in PE10's organizer. When I import photos, PE10 brings the keywords for those pix, but not structured with sub keywords.
    For example:
    Places
    North Carolina
    Chapel Hill

Thought that might be the case - remake it is then. Thanks Bob.

  • Recovering Keywords Bridge CS4

My hard drive crashed and I've replaced it with a new one and upgraded the O/S to W7 from XP MCE at the same time.  I've recovered my PSD's, JPEG's & camera raw (canon CR2) images from the old drive and when I started Bridge in the new install but most of my "custom" keywords don't appear in the keywords list nor do they seem to appear in the EXIF.  Is there a way to recover this info from the old drive image?  (it was the boot drive).

The keywords file under XP should be here: C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application  Data\Adobe\Bridge CS4\Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml. You'll have to copy it to this folder for win7: c:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS4\
This file only contains the list of keywords from your Keywords panel, when you apply keywords to your files they are preserved in the metadata of the files themselves unless you're talking about raw files in which case they should be stored in a .XMP file

  • Problem with Bridge CS4 reading/editing XMP metadata added in Bridge CS6

Please excuse me if this is a dumb/obvious question. I did try searching the forums for similar problems and didn't find anything that seemed to speak to my issue.
I'm having a problem where Bridge CS4 won't read/edit xmp metadata (specifically, keywords and descriptions in the IPTC panel) that I have entered using CS6. it will read some files, not others. The files are all .mp4s. Of these files, I can read/edit IPTC panel metadata for some of them in Bridge CS4; I can add metadata for all of them in CS6. I see no particular pattern in these files to explain what is and isn't read/editable in CS4.
My question is whether this is a compatibility issue between different versions of CS (in this instance, CS4 and CS6). i know it's a tired refrain to blame software when it could easily be user error, in which case I'd be frankly delighted to know what i'm doing wrong. Please bear with me as I give a few more details.
I'm using macs. I've tried this on multiple systems - for instance, on a mac pro 3 which for some reason has both CS4 and CS6 installed, i can add and edit keywords using CS6, but not when using CS4. Again, in CS4, some .mp4 files read/edit, others do not.
Bridge CS4 blames the files and tells me that the selected file cannot store xmp metadata, and that the properties cannot be modified. To be specific, in the metadata panel it says "this property cannot be modified"; in the keyword panel, it says, "This file (zzz.mp4) cannot store xmp metadata. No changes will occur." This seems odd, because I'm able to add xmp metadata for the same files in CS6 on the same computer, and other computers. I know this problem would disappear if all our computers were using CS6 (or CC), but unfortunately that's not a possibility at the moment. Some of them only have CS4.
Computer details (not an exhaustive list, but two instances): mac pro 3.1 running snow leopard, 16GB memory; macbook pro 4.1 running snow leopard, 4GB memory; adobe bridge cs6 (5.0.0.399) and cs4 (3.0.0.464).
    Things I have tried:
Permissions - the files are set to read/write for everyone. Given that I can add/edit metadata in CS6, it doesn't seem to be a permission issue.
Purging the cache - other users seem to have had problems adding metadata in Bridge CS4 where purging the cache for affected files solved the problem. Didn't work in this instance.
Upgrading all affected computers to CS6/CC is beyond my control. I need to figure out why CS4 won't let me read/add/edit xmp metadata, if only for the sake of understanding the broader implications for interoperability.
Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    adobe bridge cs6 (5.0.0.399) and cs4 (3.0.0.464).
Without having experience with mp4 files and metadata my observation is that you certainly have not updated Bridge CS6 ( should be 5.0.2.4) and I believe also not the latest version of CS4, can't imaging this also stayed at .0.0 so first try to update both.
And if CS4 can read the data of some files it should be capable of reading them all. Be sure to have the files completely cached first, can take a while.
Other things to try in CS4 is refresh preferences (hold down option key while restarting Bridge and choose reset prefs).
And also check for hidden cache files using menu view/show hidden files. Sometimes those cache files can be troublesome between versions.
If purge cache did not work and reset prefs also failed consider to also delete Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manual (from user library)

  • Sharing PSE7 Organizer keywords with Bridge?

I want to share my existing PSE7 Organizer keywords with Bridge. I searched the forums and found an some answers to use PSE7's "File/Write Keyword Tag and Properties Info to Photo" menu option. I did some tests with that option, and it appears to only do what I'll refer to as "additive writes," meaning it will add keywords in PSE7 Organizer for a particular photo, but it will not remove any keywords which are presently in the photo file but not in Organizer's informaton for the same photo file.
I'm guessing this is the case because PSE7 Organizer cannot assume the keyboard already in the file originally came from Organizer itself, or that the user (regardless of where an existing keyword came from) wants to remove a keyword if it's not in Organizer for the same file. It would be nice if there were a preferences option which one could select such as "Replace all keywords when writing to file" so that a user like myself could make Organizer's keywords the main keywords.
Does anyone happen to know if I understand this correctly, or is there a way to remove a PSE7 Organizer-written keyword from a file (based on its non-existence in PSE7 Organizer for the same file)?
If there is no way around this, I'm wondering if it may be better to do things the Bridge-way (which seems more like the general standard) since it seems to always keep the current info in the file, so the state is always with the file itself. Even if some features are missing, it may be better than dealing with this sort of PSE7-only feature. Any comments on this would be great to hear.
Thanks for any insight on this,
    Tom

Okay, that makes sense on the Albums. I wasn't aware that Albums were ordered.
I was using Bridge some more after my post yesterday, and I was seeing that with PSE7, both Albums and Keyword items seem more readily accessible regardless of location of the items (photo files) because there isn't an extensive file system search required since the DB provides a quick search (assuming first-searches and no pre-existing caching in Bridge).
I started testing Collections with Bridge, and realized that it was sort-of doing that. This is another aspect of Bridge which is sort of a "db" aspect of Bridge in that it requires the browser to persist data seperate from the photo file. .
What can be a little frustrating about any browser-persisted informaton (such as that for Collections) is to not find anything in the docs about how to ensure one gets a good backup of that info. PSE7 does a great job of providing a feature to do just that. Recall this is one thing I really liked about PSE7 when I was unaware of the benefits of Bridge's "minimalist db" approach (where a "db" in Bridge is anything persisted by itself such as Collections).
The "how to" backup app-persisted information (aside from docs a user saves, where the user knows the location) is a must for any pro-am or pro person, if not an end user. People don't want information that is key to something they're building over time to be persisted in some mysterious unknown location. I couldn't find what I wanted in Bridge docs, so I did my own hunting, and found Bridge Collection information hiding in "%APPDATA%\Adobe\Bridge CS4\Collections" (i.e., c:\Users\<user_name>\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS4\Collections" on my laptop) in files named "<collection_name>.filelist". But even with that info, I, as a user, would still have to test to ensure I could get a backup good enough for disaster recovery / restoration. I'm a relatively technical user so I cannot imagine what "Dad" or "Mom" would do. This sort of thing is bothersome only because it's remedied with at least a small paragraph in the docs. What would it take to say "Backing Up Bridge Information: If you have a backup program which backs up the "%APPDATA%\Adobe\Bridge CS4" you will have all necessary data to restore the information that Bridge maintains. You must ensure you backup your photo files..." etc. etc. Without that, I have to do a bunch of hunting and testing.
All that said, I see how Collections, maintained by Bridge, offer some of that PSE7 power where you don't have to search for files in various locations to find what is already noted in a central Bridge file or "db" such as a Collection for which Bridge has a list of files in the Collection itself. (If Collections could contain other Collections, that would be a nice touch. I didn't see that ability.)
What I still like about Bridge's approach is that while Albums don't exist, and while Collections are hierarchical, there's a feeling that Bridge is not taking things over where you are forced to use that app. It persists some items relating to its organizational features, but keeps the rest of the info right in the photo file. Still a nice balance. Another nice thing about this minimalist approach is that there's no importing per se. Everything is browseable/maintainable since the file system is the photo db.
All that said, I can see where PSE7 does things for the non-power user such that they can just use, say, an Album, which has a familiar name, and behaves like an Album with ordering and whatnot. A user like me doesn't need that since I can use tools to create an Album like effect, so the Bridge approach wins since I can fend for myself in areas were I don't see PSE7 to hand hold.

  • Need help installing Bridge CS4 gallery in DW CS4

I've spent days trying to find out how to put a gallery I created in Bridge CS4 into Dreamweaver CS4. Bridge created a folder filled with a lot of files, including image files and an index.html file. How do I insert these into my DW page? I'm fairly new to Dreamweaver and need the specific steps laid out for me. Thanks.

    Greetings,
Copy the entire folder to your web root in the Dreamweaver CS4 and create a HTML page from your template, name it "gallery" then open the Dreamweaver CS4 if not already opened, click to open the files of your website at the right hand Corner of the Dreamweaver CS4 page or windows > files to open it; search for the folder of the gallery open it and copy the .swf player file to the space you have created on the gallery page save the page then press F12 on your keyboard or file > preview in browser and choose your browser to view your gallery. You could resize it after all that. It worked for me on my new web design. Good luck.
    Best regards,
