Searching External Drive on Server

We recently added a 1 Tb external hard drive to our server and when we try to search for files on it, it only shows us folders, never an individual file. And it only shows the folder, not what's inside it.
I've added it the the privacy window in Spotlight and left it for anywhere from 1 minute to 24 hours before removing it and it still won't find files.
Any suggestions??

In the GetInfo window, click the disclosure triangle of "Sharing and Permissions". This will open up that part showing the Owner, Group, and everyone permissions., and also show the little gear in the center of the bottom margin. Click on the little gear and you get a submenu that includes propagate permissions.
Using Server Admin, connect to your Server and log in with a Server Admin account. Click the File Sharing Icon, and select the drive you want to look at. The default display shows permissions in the bottom pane, and makes clearer what is the Posix default file permissions ("inherited" file permissions) and what is the "add-on" Access Control List (ACL) permissions. Double click on the drive or folder to navigate more deeply, and use the buttons to set permissions. Help is available.

  • Issue using  "Find" in Bridge to search external drive

When using "Find" in Bridge (version 2.1.1.9) in CS3 to search for files on an external hard drive I must either check "Include Non-Indexed Files" or go to the external drive and build the cache for the folders I want to search. Otherwise the files will not be found.
Having to build the cache in the external drive or use non-indexed search slows down the search process. Is there a way around this. Bridge preferences are set to "Automatically Export Caches to Folders". I use SyncBack for back up to the external drive.

Thank you for the reply. I thought that once the cache is built and exported to a folder, that folder would be indexed and ready for a search by Find. And when copying that folder to another drive the files would remain indexed and available to a search by Find on that drive.
I have not copied the central cache to the external drive. So I assume that when using Find to search the external drive it is looking at the caches in each folder on that drive.

  • Using faces to search external drive

how do i go about getting faces to search an external drive or even another computer over a wireless network.

faces can not be separated form your iPhoto library - it only works with photos that have been imported to the iphoto library
And you should not access your iPhoto library over a wireless network - it is extremely problematic
You can move your iPhoto library to a directly connected Mac formatted external drive - Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Can't search external drives (RAID, FW), can't eject

    Hello,
I'm posting a link to my original post because i'm having a lot of trouble figuring this out, and perhaps someone here has some thoughts. ANY help would be appreciated.
Brief overview: i cannot do a search on any of my external drives - RAID, FW, or USB - which makes for a very inefficient workflow. From what i've been able to figure out so far, it seems like it's an issue with Spotlight trying (but failing) to index the drives, which runs me into the other problem: when trying to eject any of these drives, i get the "this drive is in use and cannot be ejected. Try quitting apps and trying again" even if none of them are in use.
I tried the Spotlight/Privacy add-then-delete option and get an error saying i "cannot add this drive because of an unknown error". I tried to force indexing with an app called Highlight. I Repaired permissions. I did a clean erase & install. LaCie tech support wasn't any help. No dice for any of these.
    Running OS 10.5.8, PPC G5

Sounds like a corrupted OS install then, or you need to trash the preferences for spotlight. I've no idea how to do that, but might fix it if you've not selected these externals to not be searched with spotlight.

  • Connecting to External Drive on Server

    Hi,
I've got an Xserve on an XSan Fibre system.
As part of that I have an external backup drive which backs up the XSan volumes connected to the server . I would like to be able to connect to this from a client on the network. Is there any way of doing this without going to the server room and physically hooking up my drive directly, or can I mount this external drive that's connected to the server on my client machine?
Seems straight forward but I can't figure out the address to the external drive...
    Help appreciated.

Hi Camelot, thanks for the help.
I've done the sharepoint thing, but when I click automount option the wheel just goes round and round and doesn't let me access anything there. I think that it's shared though despite that.
Next up is my connection to the server. I use the IP address and I can screen share via vnc://ip address but when I use afp:// it just says cannot contact server. I know it's there as I'm sharing XSan volumes through it and of course the screen share works.
Any ideas? I'm sure it'll work if I can connect to the server. Also would I need to make the address afp://192.168.0.100/Volumes/External_Drive ? Or can I lose the Volumes path?
(I'm a complete noob on servers and am just trying to save calling an engineer out at $1500 a day.)

  • Spotlight no longer searches external drives

Spotlight has stopped searching my external firewire drives.
I had to do a couple of hard boots when Leopard hung up and after those, spotlight started re-indexing all drives and I let it do it. After that I can no longer find anything on external drives with Spotlight.
    Any suggestions to fix?

Found the fix. Go into spotlight under system preferences and choose the privacy tab. Add the external HD you are wanting to reindex. Then remove it. This forces spotlight to reindex the drive and fix your problem. Worked for me.

  • Using Time Capsule as an external drive (media server)

I know the answer is out there somewhere but I've been googling longer than it would take some one in here to answer my newbie question
I'm making a total switch from PC to Mac. So I'll be getting a Macbook Pro and a Time Capsule for back up.
Since my girlfriend is getting a Macbook too, it would be nice to share movies and picture via the TC.
Will it just show as an extra drive in the Finder?
Will my Mac automatically connect to the drive when I connect to the internet(TC)
I will be bringing my Mac in and out of the apartment, so it would be nice if it just did as much as possible by itself.
Am I understanding it correctly that it will work as wireless router when connected to the internet modem?
Is there anything I should be aware of?

welcome to the bright side of computing
So I'll be getting ... a Time Capsule for back up ... it would be nice to share movies and picture via the TC.
you might want to consider using the TC for backups only and rather put the shared content on an USB drive connected to the TCs USB port.
take the time to browse through [this_|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/FAQ.html] user tip.
Will it just show as an extra drive in the Finder?
yes, you can access the TCs drive (and the USB drive connected to the TC) via the finder. it will look like this
the folder data represents the TCs drive while the other folder is a USB drive connected to it. click on either folder and the drive will mount on the desktop.
Will my Mac automatically connect to the drive when I connect to the internet(TC)
once everything is set up, your Macs will connect to the wireless network created by the TC automatically.
Am I understanding it correctly that it will work as wireless router when connected to the internet modem?
    correct.
Is there anything I should be aware of?
    check out above user tip.

  • Can time machine be used to back up one external drive to another external drive?

I use the photography program Lightroom to organize and develop digital photos.  All my photos are stored on my iMac internal drive.  The internal drive is almost full so I want to move my photos to a new external drive.  At present, I have an external drive devoted to backing up my iMac using time machine.  I have no need to change this arrangement.  I would like to use a new external drive to serve as the primary location for my pictures, which I will move from the internal drive.  Then I would like to backup that drive to a third external back up drive.  Can time machine be used to automatically back up the second drive to the third drive as well as for continuing to provide ongoing backups to my internal drive as it is currently doing?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Thanks for the links, but I don't see in the pondini links, the scenario I am asking about.
Time Machine can easily back up multiple internal and/or directly-connected external drives and partitions simultaneously (but Time Machine cannotback up data that's on a network).
    From the first link.

the confusion starts in your above statement...
There should be Only One Time Machine Drive.

  • GRUB hangs when booting Oracle VM Server via USB External Drive

I installed Oracle VM Server 2.1 on USB external drive (/dev/sde - 80gb) with First Sector Boot Partion (/dev/sde1) as /dev/sda1 (MBR) is already occupied. After a successful installation, I changed the hard-disk device sequence (not boot order) so that USB drive is found as first C: drive. All I got was the word 'GRUB' displayed (hangs) and nothing else. How do I get Oracle VM Server to boot? Should I reinstall now that the hard drive sequence has been changed?
    Thank you.

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • How do I search external hard drive only

    thanks

To search an external drive with Spotlight it must first be indexed. External drives are not indexed automatically. Or you can download the freeware search tool, Easy Find - VersionTracker or MacUpdate, that does not need to index a drive.

  • Can I use Time Capsule to serve as an external drive with two different iMacs?

I want to be able to set up Time Capsule to serve as a backup drive for my iMac, as well as my wife's iMac.
So that we don't have to use two seperate back-up drives on each computer.
    Is this possible?

The following quote is from: https://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
Have multiple Mac computers in your home or office? AirPort Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. AirPort Time Capsule spares you the work. Your computers are always backed up — automatically and wirelessly.

  • Searching external hard drive attached to Time Capsule

I have a 1 TB Time Capsule which I use for backing up my 2011 MacBook Pro and for providing my WiFi. I also have a 1 TB external hard drive plugged into my Time Capsule which I can access via WiFi. I can go to Finder on my laptop and browse the folders/files on my external hard drive. It appears under Shared in the sidebar of the Finder window. I can open files from it and I can save files to the drive, so it appears to be working fine. I have hundreds of gigs of files on the drive. But when I was recently hunting for a specific file, I noticed that my Spotlight wasn't doing a very good job at finding files on my external hard drive. I tried many different searches - by name, by type, by date - and had no luck. But as I was searching, I realized that I had more files of certain file types than Spotlight was showing me. So I tried searching for files I first confirmed were actually on the external drive. And again Spotlight failed to find them. If I used a partial filename search, it would find some files that matched but not the ones I was looking for.
So, this led me to think the index is corrupt. I'm not sure if this problem is related to my recently upgrading to Lion or not, since I haven't had to search the drive in awhile. I tried to force Spotlight to recreate the index on the drive by using the Privacy panel trick (of the Spotlight Preferences) but that didn't work. I then tried to get Spotlight to recreate its entire index and I think all that did was recreate the index for my internal harddrive.
So, are there things I need to know about attaching an external hard drive to a Time Capsule that I perhaps forgot to do? Should I be able to search the drive with Spotlight? Do I have to somehow force Spotlight to look in external drive when doing a search or is it supposed to search everything it can?
I should mention I have been having a little trouble with my Time Capsule as well. I recently had to erase the drive and set up a whole new backup since the backup was failing - not sure what happened to it, but it seems to be working again now. But I did notice yesterday that my Time Machine hadn't backed up all day but it was not giving me a warning message. It was just sitting there not backing up. I had tried resetting my PRAM and after doing so, my Time Machine was back to backing up. I'm not sure if the PRAM reset helped with that or if it was just the restart of the laptiop.
One more thing - I feel like since upgrading to Lion I have had to restart my laptop more than ever. Things just start acting funny, especially when I am using Safari and I find myself resetting Safari and then restarting my laptop all the time. Odd.

It should be HFS+.. it may work with fat32 but that is a lousy format.
The actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. the TC offers SMB connection.. so it is a true file sharing device.. the format used to store the files cannot be directly read by windows but is "interpreted, translated" via the firmware of the TC.
BTW this is true of all network storage.. A NAS can store files in whatever format its OS requires.. freebsd like freenas might use XFS.. or linux use EXT2 or REISFS.. it makes no difference as long as it offers that store to the windows (and apple) network as SMB.. then windows can handle it.
