Searching file metadata or file properties

Does Oracle Text index file metadata? For example, when you select File, then Properties in MS Word, you can specify Author, Subject, Manager and other information. This is "metadata" inside the file.
Since Oracle uses Stellent's InsideOut Content Access technology and www.stellent.com states that it does indeed pull metadata from all supported file types, does Oracle Text take advantage of this?
Thanks in advance!

Ahem, well this is interesting.  I haven't found a way to write a custom panel to display the JobName in CS and make it editable - perhaps a limitation to the panel language.<br /><br />One option is to create a template to apply to multiple files - either through the flyout menu in File Info, Replace in the Advanced panel or via the File Browser > Edit > Replace Metadata.<br /><br />Below is a template that I created.  Best way to create your own is to save a template with the JobName property present, then go in an edit the file to remove the other template data and retain the jobName section as I did below.<br /><br />Edit the jobName value between the tags and rename the template - then use the Replace command to apply it to files in CS.<br /><br />Not a pretty work around.  Otherwise I would suggest using another field going forward.<br /><br />Gunar<br /><br /><?xpacket begin='Ôªø' id='W5M0MpCehiHzreSzNTczkc9d'?><x:xmpmeta xmlns:x='adobe:ns:meta/' x:xmptk='XMP toolkit 3.0-29, framework 1.6'><br /><rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf='http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#' xmlns:iX='http://ns.adobe.com/iX/1.0/'><br /><br /> <rdf:Description rdf:about=''<br />  xmlns:stJob='http://ns.adobe.com/xap/1.0/sType/Job#'<br />  xmlns:xapBJ='http://ns.adobe.com/xap/1.0/bj/'><br />  <xapBJ:JobRef><br />   <rdf:Bag><br />    <rdf:li rdf:parseType='Resource'><br />     <stJob:name>new info goes into here</stJob:name><br />    </rdf:li><br />   </rdf:Bag><br />  </xapBJ:JobRef><br /> </rdf:Description><br /><br /></rdf:RDF><br /></x:xmpmeta><br /><?xpacket end='r'?>

  • Navigation Bar Search results in jar:file:/// search

When typing in anything (intended to be a search, default search engine SHOULD be Google), my search is directed to a "File Not Found" Page with this as the search criteria: "jar:file:///C:/Program Files (x86)/Mozilla Firefox/omni.jar!/chrome/en-US/locale/browser-region/region.properties[SEARCH CRITERIA THAT I TYPED]" (without the brackets or quotes)
I have tried several times to change the keyword.url, but each time I close firefox or restart it, the search changes back to searching in the directory posted above.

I remembered that used to be problem, so I just checked on my local version of my site, and Spotlight found the files on the basis of content without a problem. So I took a look at my installed mdimporters in /Library/Spotlight, to see what may have led to this happy turn of events. I thought perhaps the iWeb mdimporter might be doing it, but was unable to find a reference to HTML in its type declarations. I then took a look at in /System/Library/Spotlight and discovered that RichText.mdimporter has a declaration for public.html as a content type. You should have that mdimporter installed by default, but you might take a look to make sure it is there.
If the mdimporter is there, but the html files aren't being indexed, it could be that whatever program you are using to create them isn't giving them the appropriate content type. I code by hand using TextEdit, which saves them with the following metadata entry:
    kMDItemContentType = "public.html"
    kMDItemContentTypeTree = (
    "public.html",
    "public.text",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
They are then evidently indexed without problem by the RichText.mdimporter. You might try opening one of your html docs in TextEdit (as plain text), resave, and see if Spotlight then picks up the content of the file. Of course, the content means the words that people see when they look at the page in a browser. If the content you are talking about is stuff that is inside an html tag, you are out of luck. I know of NO way to get Spotlight to find that. EasyFind will though, but it is a brute force search and will take awhile, even when restricted to a particular folder.

  • Tags not shown in file metadata

Why do the tags assigned on most photos in PSE8 not show in the meta data that one sees looking at the properties in windows explorer?  It seems that sometimes it is written to the file, but most times it isn't; I haven't been able to track down when/why it sometimes does.
If I add tags using Picasa, they show up in the file metadata, but PSE8 doesn't see those tags.
Seems odd that PSE8 doesn't write the tag info into the metadata.  On the other hand, it seems to always write the copyright metadata into the file.
Am I doing something wrong in the way I am applying tags?
    Thanks,
    ...Rich

    dj_paige wrote:
If the tags have been written to the files, they're there forever, so even if you forget to bring the tags into the program, you can delete them from the organizer, then reimport them to give yourself a second chance.
And when I say "delete them from the organizer", make absolutely certain that the "delete from the hard drive also" checkbox is>> NOT CHECKED"!
Deleting and reimporting is never a good idea. You lose information that way. Better you should manage your catalog(s) properly, and move them, as described above, to new computer; or convert the catalogs to a new PSE version.
OK, I just imported, deleted, imported, and redeleted one file from my organizer. The file measured 9,359,012 Bytes when I began, After these actions, the file still measures 9,359,012 Bytes. So why don't you take a moment to explain exactly what information you think I've lost. It's probably some imaginary, invisible information, that's missing just for the sake of argument.
That's fabulous, how youve backed up and moved catalogs. I gererally just copy and paste one storage drive onto another, put the copied drive into it's new host computer, install whatever version of PSE I happen to be using into the machine, and then, (nows here's the fun part), you go into disk management, and change the HDD letter to match that of the drive that was copied from in the donor computer, open PSE, then click on the catalog file that's >> already in the proper folder<<<, then click open catalog. Whaddya know, everything hooks up almost instantaneously. This has worked with up to 180,000 files at a shot. You'd be burning DVDs all day backing up that number of files.
Now please stop spouting nonsense about losing information doing a simple delete and reimport. If the information was correctly written to the file in the first place, it's actually almost impossible to lose it. With one caveat; I'm referring the freshly imported files. The only info that you would lose is stack  & version set, but that's one, assuming it's there in the first place, and that's because the only place that's present is in PSE. Metadata and tags info, if written into the file correctly should survive any number of delete, reimport cycles. Nor would any EXIF information be lost with this process. Like it's always said, PSE only points to the files, they're still where they were, in the condition they were, unless YOU, change it.
Oh, and I usually keep 2 versions of PSE on any given computer, and import the same photos into both of them. Just in case one version goofs up.

  • Searching for a good file manager

I'm searching for a good file manager. Konqueror 3.5 is quite good, dolphin 4.1 and konqueror 4.1 are not. Since konqueror 3.5 is going to die due to lack of support in the future, I kind of need to find a new good file manager...
Do there exist file managers with the following features?
Many of these features are things I thought were quite logical to be in a file manager, but seem to be missing in most "modern" ones...
-independent of any desktop (gnome or KDE), just a standalone program
-preferably not being both a web browser and file manager in once, at least not in an annoying way. Konqueror 3.5 shows that being that combination is possible without being annoying.
-ability to have a tree view of the folders on one side and list view showing the files and subfolders of the folder currently selected in the tree on the other side
-detailed list view showing at least filename, type, date and size, and the ability to sort according to any of these properties
-a non-detailed view showing image contents would also be nice, to browse folders of photos or other images
-ability to open files in certain programs if you doubleclick the file, NOT open it by singleclicking, singleclicking may only select it
-ability to select multiple files by dragging box around files or using keys like "ctrl" and "shift"
-ability to do "open terminal here" or type terminal commands in the current open directory
-must have ability to drag files from one folder to another, from list view to tree view and vica versa, to move or copy them
-and must have ability to use "ctrl+c" and "ctrl+v" to copy files and foldes from here to there
-multiple tabs is a huge plus
-favorites (to local folder paths) is also a huge plus
-preview of files when hovering the mouse over them is nice
-must have ability to zip and unzip (or other compression formats) folders by just right clicking them and choosing a zip/unzip command there
-in addition to that, must also have ability to browse through a zip file as you would through a normal directory, and drag files from the insides of the zip file to the tree view to automatically unzip those files there, and of course "ctrl+c"/"ctrl+v" should also work to copy a file from the inside of the zip file, to some other folder on your disk
-no horizontal autoscrolling in the tree view, that is an invention straight from the abyss...

I know exactly how you feel about KDE 4 vs. 3 -- Konqueror was the best part of KDE for me (pretty much the only part I ever used, actually; my window manager is a slightly modified version of WMII and I generally loathe "desktop environments"). KDE 4 ruined it, completely and utterly.
I submitted about 20 different bug reports about Konqeuror 4, mostly features that they'd deleted or mangled; some of them are starting to be addressed now. I don't think they'll ever fix the speed issues though, because those are dependent on the underlying KDE 4 libraries as far as I can tell -- it's as if KDE 4 were purposely and deliberately designed to be slower than KDE 3. Even if they fix all of its deficiencies, that'll probably keep me from using it...
Right now there's KDEmod, which will hopefully maintain its KDE 3 branch for a while longer. It's starting to show some problems, though; I haven't been able to get kdemod konqueror 3 to work fully out of the box (the settings pages are all blank). On my main machine, I somehow managed to hack together some of the KDEmod3 packages so that I have a functional konqueror 3 running alongside the Arch repository's version of KDE4. I'm afraid to pacman -Syu now, though, because it will probably break horribly :P
I don't remember exactly how I got konqueror 3 going like that, as I did it in my initial fit of rage after I did the pacman -Syu that got me KDE4 (a decision I have regretted ever since), but it was something like this:
    1. move /opt to /opt.kde4
    2. make a new /opt
    3. download several KDE 3 packages from the KDEmod3 repositories manually
    4. extract those packages into the new /opt with tar -xzf (NOT pacman!)
    5. try /opt/kde/bin/konqueror
    6. read reams of error messages about missing libraries, segfaults, etc.
    7. try to supply the missing libraries by downloading other kdemod3 packages and manually extracting them
    8. goto 5
Then, when everything worked (sort of), I renamed some stuff so that 'konqueror' is konqueror 4 (I think having it konqueror 3 broke something else, but I don't remember what), and konqueror 3 is called 'k3nqueror'.
If KDEmod3 ever goes away and there's no other good replacement file manager by then, I'll probably take the source code of KDE3 and try to make a standalone version of konqueror out of it. (Which will probably be quite a project because of how interdependent all the KDE components are.)
Some features I "need" in a file manager, besides the ones you mentioned:
    - Konqueror's tree view (where you can expand folder branches in the file list)
    - Infinite view splitting -- I frequently have my konqueror windows split into 4, sometimes as many as 6 or 7 view panes. Very useful for sorting out files.
    - Selection rectangles are sensitive only over files -- I find full-row-select really annoying, because there are no guaranteed "blank" areas that you can click on to clear a selection. I also use this behaviour to grab long-named files that are interspersed with short ones, because they hilight first when the rectangle touches them (you wouldn't think this very useful, but surprisingly often you do want to do something to all the long-named files...)
    - Right-clicking on a folder and clicking "Paste" pastes into that folder, not the current one -- you'd be amazed at how many file managers get this wrong. I shouldn't have to cd into a folder just to paste some files there.

  • Search results not returning file names correctly

Have an onsite SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise that contains a number of documents in a document library all containing the word "south" in their title. When a search is run with the keyword "south" all 3 files are shown in the results but only one displays
the correct title. The other 2 display alternate text (in this case the company name). The links all 3 results are correct, however the title of results is incorrect for 2 out of the 3.
I have duplicated these results using Office 365 and another on site SharePoint 2010 server.
I have duplicated these results converting the documents to DOCX format under Word 2007 and Word 2010.
Obviously, this is an issue with the files, however any ideas where to start looking to uncover where the SharePoint Server is pulling the information from?
In the end I need all 3 results to display the current name of the files it finds, not simply some random text with the files from 2 out of 3 of the results.

    http://bpostutor.com/post/Hidden-SharePoint-2010-Feature-Changes-Document-Titles-in-Search-Results.aspx
Hidden SharePoint 2010 Feature Changes Document Titles in Search Results
SharePoint 2010 has a interesting feature which you may not know about.  It's called Optimistic Title.  It's part of the Office Search engine within SharePoint.  What it does is determine a new, hopefully more relevant title for your documents
to be displayed in your search results based on document properties or the actual contents of the document (i.e. Text within the file).  As you might expect this is closely tied to the Office document formats such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote,
and Visio.  Your end users may report that the titles that they see for search results differ greatly from the file name or the actual title of the document.  This is particularly evident with PowerPoint files where the name of the first slide
is often used. The behavior is not entirely predictable.  Different results can be expected from Office 2007 and Office 2010 created files and even those created in earlier versions of Microsoft Office.
If you want to change this functionality you need to actually go and edit the registry on your Search role server(s) within your SharePoint farm, restart the osearch14 service and then do a full crawl.  The key you want to modify is the EnableOptimisticTitleOverride.
The default setting is 1. Change it to 0 to disable the feature.

  • Bug: Keywords behave incorrectly after "Read Metadata from File"

(Happens in LR3.4 RC and probably also in previous versions... but I am not sure if it happened in LR2)
The problem seems tro be somthing like de-sync of database status and what we see on the screen.
    1) Let's say we have a photo with keyword "abc"
    2) Click in the Keyword List on the arrow around the "abc" keyword to show only photos with this keyword (single one), leave the filter on this settings
    2) Save Metadata to File
    3) Edit XMP in an external application, add new keyword "def"
    4) Read Metadate from File
    5) Now what happens is: The photos disappers from the screen as if it lost the "abc" keyword (weird), but if you look at the Keyword List, the "abc" keyword has still 1 photo attached to it. Also, if you release the filter and find the photo, it clearly has the "abc" and "def" keywords in the Keywording panel. And you can search for this keyword in the text filter (works correctly), but if you click on the arrow around the "abc" keyword, the photo is not shown.
    6) If you restart the Lightroom, it will work correctly again.
I have an own application that is able to modify the XMP and the modifications may not be perfect, but in my opinion, this shouldn't happen when reading the metadata. If any developer is reading this, I can supply a file with original and changed metadata for debugging.
It would be great it this could be resolved.
    Thanks!

  • Searching for a specific file size

    Hello,
It's been a while but it seems like XP let me search for specific file sizes - e.g. if I wanted to search for files that were greater than 10GB or if I wanted to search for files less than 20GB.
I can't figure it out in Windows 8.1.
If the answer is possible through standard search and not powershell, I'd prefer the GUI way.
    Thanks

In File Explorer (was Windows Explorer), type the search criteria into the box in the top right of the screen and press Enter.
    Example searches are:
A minimum file size, simply type size:>30,000KB into the Search box and press Enter.
type:=.pdf or type:=.doc will display specific file types.
filename:x will display files using a partial filename. x represents the partial filename you want to search for.
kind:video, kind:music or kind:pictures will find all the videos, music or pictures.
If you just click or tap in the Search box, Search Tools will appear which allows the choosing of a Kind, a Size, Date Modified, Other Properties and Advanced search. In Folder Options > Search Tab, the search options can be changed, e.g. Find partial
    matches.
Providing the location is indexed, you can search in File Explorer for a specific word or phrase by typing content:
followed by your phrase enclosed in double quotes. This will produce a list of files matching the criterion.
Speed up the search by opening File Explorer (was Windows Explorer) at the folder you want to search, rather than at the root folder. Also, pressing F3 will show Search options like Date Modified and Size.
Ninety-nine per cent of politicians give the rest a bad name.

  • Save metadata to file + Edit in PS = Reset develop adjustments?

    Hello:
I don't know if this issue has been raised  before, since it's not easy to describe it and, hence, to perform a  search based on it. I would like to know if this is a bug or there is  some reason for it which I haven't think of yet.
Let me explain... I use LR 3.3 to develop a raw file  as usual. Ok. Then I do "Edit in PS" to perform some pixel edition, then  back to Lr. Next, I apply some LR adjustments to the resulting file  (PSD or TIFF, depending on the preferences) that I just edited in PS. So  far, everything's fine: I can keep going back and forth between PS and  LR without trouble...
... but if I save metadata to  file (control+S), and then try to edit the PSD/TIFF as "original" in PS,  guess what: the file opens in PS with the LR adjustments not visible  (this is normal), but simultaneously, the develop settings for the file  are reset in Lightroom! So, to summarize:
    1) I develop a raw file using LR adjustments
    2) I edit in PS and save as PSD (or tiff, depending on the preferences)
    3) Back in LR, i apply some develop adjustments to the new PSD/TIFF file.
    4) I save metadata to file and choose "edit in PS as original"
    5) The file opens in PS, but the settings for the file are reset in LR!
This  doesn't happen if I uncheck the "Include develop settings in metadata  in jpg, tiff and psd files" in the Metadata tab of the Catalog  preferences.
I could record a video (screencast) if the explanation is not clear enough. Thanks in advance for your answers!

I have recorded a screencast. For some reason, now I can't make it happen the first time around - I have had to do it twice this time (save metadata to psd file, edit in Ps, close Ps, save metadata to psd file, edit in Ps).
I won't go into details since I think the video is pretty self explanatory. I know it's not usual to save metadata to file (including develop settings) just before editing in PS, but... is this normal, expected behavior? Am I doing something wrong without noticing? Same thing happen both in my desktop PC (Win 7 64, LR 3.3, CS5 64) and my laptop (Vista 32, LR 3.3, CS5 32).
    Thanks for your help.

  • Batch read metadata from file

    Hi Everybody,
I wonder if Lightroom 3 offers a function that lets me read metadata from file for multiple images in a batch process. The reason is that I have changed the GPS information for quite a couple of my pics using the Geoencoding Support pluging from Jeffrey Friedl and let it write back into the DNG-file. Since I also flushed the shadow data I can't see any GPS information in my metadata table in Lightrrom even though the data are present in the DNG. Now the real question is: Is there a better way to get my GPS data into Lightroom than emptying the Library and reimport all of my pics?
Oh, and before I forget it: Yes, I have searched this forum - and a couple of others as well - and I found stuff about batch processing date/time information. However, the method presented there apparently does not apply to my problem.
    Thanks for any information.
    Have a nice day,
    f.

In Library Module, select Grid Mode. Select all images you wish to read metadata from. Go to Metadata>Read Metadata from Files
Similarly, you can edit time for time zone/ AM-PM issues, etc by going to Metadata>Edit Capture Time
