Searching for a Year of Birth
I have been trying to search my Address Book for all the people born in a particular year. It is not possible to create a Smart List as components of the Birth Date are not part of the pre-set search or filtering criteria, only age.
I have 1200 contacts and want to do some age cohort work.
Anyone have any ideas how I might be able to find all the people born in any particular year?
could be easy (for us users) if the search field would have a arrow down like in other apps (ical, iphoto,...).
then showing the address book fields (INCLUDING the user defined custom fields) to refine your searches.
Same problem occurs when i search for a doc(tor). : search will show all doc's but also suzanne dockx, who is not a doctor.

If you want a more general search type the " character into the search field, and click on column headings to vary the calendar/date/type/title parameters. -
Searching for sound card, which decodes Dolby Digital from S/PDIF-IN
As I wrote in the topic headline, I'm currently searching for a sound card, which decodes Dolby Digital from the S/PDIF input.
I.e. a DolbyDigital signal comes from an external device (here Set-Top-Box/Media-Recei'ver) and the sound card should send the signal to my analogue speakers.
Currently I have a Creative X-Fi ExtremeMusic, this card does not support this.
And yes, I read the thread "Digital Connection...".

Several people say, that I can do that, what I described in the first posting, by using an I/O console from Creative. But Creative (support) says, it is impossible at all, they don't have any products, which can do this.
Can anyone tell me, whether it's possible or not? Important fact: I use Windows XP, not Vista. And I don't want to use modded drivers. I want to use the latest official ones.
The new soundcard "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Champion Series" has an I/O dri've. If I have this, can I decode DolbyDigital from S/PDIF-IN, if I plug the optical cable into the soundcard? Because this console seems to have no optical input. -
I have a podcast that has been submitted to itunes a few years back that has been working just fine. The person updating it broke it a few months back, I have fixed the error and reformatted it but the podcast still doesn't work. If I go in itunes and choose to open stream and connect to the podcast URL there, then it works just fine, but If I search for it in the itunes store (search: Jubilee Community Church) then a couple of the episodes show up (see The Art of Marriage by Stephen van Rhyn) but if I click on any of them it just tells me that my podcast is not available in the current store. But I submitted it from the UK store and it is not even available on that store. I have send numerous emails to Apple Support but they have been incredibly unhelpful. I hoped it would update overtime and start working again but its been a month and still nothing, I can't get hold of anyone technical from itunes support to reload my podcast or tell me whats wrong, I can't even resubmit my podcast because it's already been submitted and therefore won't allow me too. I've run out of options, any help would be appreciated!
A 4th gen iPod can not be upgraded to iOS 8. 7.0.2 is the high version it can run.

I need to able to search for calendar entries that are over one year old.
I am an old Palm OS user and have used the calendar on it to track my clients visits/service for the last 15 years. By searching the customers name on the palm, it would bring up every entry I had keyed in for them, so I could immediately know how old their equipment was, what service had been done, etc. I also used the calendar to track my daily and weekly sales. I was disappointed to find that the ipad does not search for any entries older than one year. Is there something that can fix this or is there an app that could be used in the way the palm was? Well, that would depend on what calendar you are using.
If you are simply relying on the calendar on the device, well, that's not very smart. Restoring from backup should put everything back.
If the calendar is synced with another service, like Google, iCloud, Exchange, do the entires still exist there?
If the calendar is synced with Outlook or iCal on your computer, do the entries still exist there? -

I have had audition for 2 years. Today it crashed. It gave a configuration error: 16 The message said to uninstall and reinstall. I did. Still the same error. Then I searched forum and checked the two folder permissions. They were correct. So what do I do???????

Work around for 1 year search limit on CalDAV calendars?
By researching a couple of forums and doing some of my own testing I seem to have confirmed that if a calendar on an iOS device is synced "over the air" (CalDAV) then Calendar and Spotlight search will only look 12 months into the past - regardless of how many months/years of calendar data is actually synced.
If a calendar is synced via iTunes this limitation does not seem to apply.
Accepting that this is the case, my query is what is the least onerous way to:
a) Be able to search 2-3 years into the past and
b) Have additions/changes that are made on the iPhone/iPad immediately sync into the cloud server
The specific scenario I have (for a client) involves Outlook 2010 on a Windows 7 PC syncing over the air using iCloud.
My first thought is to maintain a separate calendar in Outlook for items more than (say) 11 months old. Have that calendar sync via iTunes - on the premise that it it is unlikely to change very often. Then once a month (say) manually move the 11-12 month old items from the CalDAV calendar to the iTunes calendar.
My second thought is to simply sync the same calendar both over the air and via iTunes and live with the duplicate entries.
Does anybody have ideas that are slightly more sophisticated and/or elegant than this?

GrahamThat's a bit sketchy. There's a much simpler way around the Volume Limitation. That's removing it. Just set the Volume Limit to its maximum, and it's virtually gone.

I have spent hours trying to get itunes working on my laptop.
The only functinoality I crave is to be able to get pictures off my iphone 5 (which has the latest ios installed.), as almost all other functinoality of itunes I find painful beyond belief. It has the worst ergonomics I think of any software I have ever used, which is bizarely at odds with the mobile decvices, which by and large work quite nicely (indeed, why I bought them!)
My laptop runs windows 7. It has all the latest microsoft updates installed (I am religious about this: it always has had.)
I have run itunes on this machine for some years, regularly updating when I am prompted to.
A few days back i was prompted to update to 11.1.4
It failed to install badly. whatever I try at some point during the install process the installer just hangs, or never terminates.
All communication between computer and iphone functionality has been lost.
Nothing eles on my machine is behaving oddly. slowly etc. it is only apple stuff that isn't working.
I googled and found a lot of recurring themes on apple forums:
So far I have tried:
uninstalling / reinstalling. (hangs during installation).
Restarting the machine between uninstall and reinstall.
Searching and removing any directories/ contents related to apple, after the uninstall, prior to machine reboot.
I have even used iobit uninstaller, as removing apple software as you know is almost impossible (ever tried disabbling the quicktime updater that runs at startup? it's like a virus !!)
I have removed all apple software incl quicktime.
I have tried the microsoft software installer fixit link often posted to.
i have tried unpacking the apple installation file, using the latest version of winrar, to try installing one at a time.
I have found the installation is very very very slow (it looks as though it hangs, but i leave it running in the background, after 15-20 minutes, the status starts advancing for example). so far I have managed to install the first few components up to applesoftware update,msi, and they seem to need to be run multiple times.
(this last one took about 40 minutes).
I have been very careful to install / uninstall the software components int eh "prescribed" order.
I have tried each step multiple times, rebooting the machine numerous times, cleaning temp folders (with ccleaner) etc.
I ave tried installing when my virus checker AVG is disabled.

As you can gather I'm seriously tearing my hair out.
I presume there is some kind of generic bug in this installer: as a friend had exactly the same problem on sunday night, with a different machine, running windows 7, and a couple of her colleagues at work has had the self same problem over the weekend, though none of them seem to have gone to the lengths I have yet !
I tried doing a system restore, but my machine seems to have lunched all previous system restore points, so I can't . Arrrrrgggg !
Is an older version of itunes available so i can install that instead ?

Iphone 5s - Calls Breaking Up - Searching for Network

I recently started using my new Iphone 5s and I have a big problem.
Every call I get or make, the call suddenly breaks up during the first minute. My network reception bar drops to 1 bar, then says "searching..." briefly, and then it comes back. But the call is already gone. There are no problems when I remake the call. But I get this problem with every single call that I make. I've never had a problem with my Iphone 4 for 2 years, so I don't think it's about my carrier. Anyone else experiencing the same problem? Any suggestions?I have the same problem. My phone keeps "Searching..." for network, and if I don't fix it, it can go on like that for days. I tried several solutions, Reset Network Settings, Reset All Settings, hard reset, and finally I restored my iphone to factory settings then re installed ios 8.1.3, which I had trouble doing because my phone took 4 days to finally have a successful restore. I am not sure if this is about updating to ios 8.1.3, but all of this happened to my iphone 5s a few days after updating. Anyway, after my phone had miraculously went thru with the restore, my phone was back to the way it was, but after 2 days, it went back to searching for network again whenever I get to an area with poor signal. I put phone in Airplane mode for about 10-20 mins, then turn off Airplane mode to check if signal is back. If it still doesnt, I reset network settings, then airplane mode again. I have not yet used reset all settings since my iPhone restore. I tried to google and see if this really is an ios problem or just my case, then I came across your question. The latest fix I did just this morning is I plugged my phone to my wall charger and tried to dial a number and pressing the green call button several times until the signal went back. That was by far the simplest solution I have discovered, but I still can't say if that IS the solution because it was just my first time to do it. I advise you not to restore your phone because in my case, mine took 4 days to until i was able to use my phone again since restoring wasn't working. You don't want to end up with a dead brick phone. With mine, I just kept trying until it went thru and I don't think I will be doing the restore all over again because of what happened. I hope this is just a problem with ios update and that apple will soon find a permanent fix to this.

ITunes 7.4.1 hangs & has been doing so for entire year!
I am running a dual processor G4 machine with OS X 10.3.9. I have gone through many updates of iTunes and Quicktime, and always my problem remains. I have heard there may be a trigger relating to network activity, but I have yet to read anything on the issue that would clarify whether it relates to what I am about to describe. (In case it is relevant, however, I am on a network that serves to link printers and a cable modem between my Mac and some Windows PCs via ethernet — but this "network" does not involve logging into a remote host.)
Okay, so here's the first of what is a twofold problem: If I want to use iTunes at all, I have to reboot my machine and launch iTunes immediately thereafter so that it loads before any other apps are launched. Even if I do not launch any apps after bootup, simply walking away and coming back later will trigger the problem of iTunes refusing to complete startup. So the gist of it is that if I fail to launch iTunes right after the computer boots, I will see the library load, the status bar complete successfully, and then, at the point where the app/window should appear… nothing. Not even an error message.
The Activity Monitor simply states that iTunes has hung. To get rid of the spinning beach ball, I have to force iTunes to quit. Whenever the launch hangs up in this manner, I cannot even restart my machine because the logout will time out because iTunes is "not responding".
The second component to this problem is that even if I reboot my computer and successfully launch iTunes — which, as I said, is the only way to make it work — I must continue using iTunes without interruption. Why? Because if I let the iTunes app go idle — say if I leave the computer for more than five minutes or launch another application — iTunes, upon my return, will "stop responding"… and again all I see is the spinning beach ball.
As mentioned, there is no error messages whatsoever. In fact, when I view my crash log even the info. I find there (see below) is outdated. I cannot find anything more current than the error that was reported in March of this year (which, incidentally, is probably when all this started — about the same time OS 10.3.9 was installed to a fresh hard drive and my iTunes library was restored to my new drive using my iPod in conjunction with a third party app that spells iTunes backwards… but that's another story).
Please keep in mind that I know next to nothing about UNIX command lines/troubleshooting. I've been using Macs since the '80s and was pretty good at troubleshooting all things pre-OS X, but when OS X came out Apple lost me.
Thus far what I have done mostly amounts to repeatedly verifying/repairing disk permissions (using the install CD). Of course, if repairing permissions had helped, I wouldn't be here . I also downloaded and installed a fresh copy of QuickTime, but that didn't help, either. I've also run all the utilities, and everything turns up fine (I ONLY use OS X for Web surfing and iTunes; there are very few third-party apps installed).
So now that I have given the circumstances, I will conclude this post with a sample from my console/crashlog. It dates back to March and isn't current, but hopefully it provides a clue as to why I've gone through all the iTunes/Quicktime updates and still see the exact same problem persist:

Thanks again for any clues/tips you can provide! I've been dealing with this iTunes startup issue for the entire year thus far, but never had any such issues under Jaguar!I finally stumbled across a fix for this problem, and in case someone else is frustrated at some point by a similar issue I'm posting what finally worked to enable me to bring iTunes up at any time (without rebooting first).
The solution was to go to the preferences to uncheck "search for shared libraries".
I'm glad the problem is fixed, but Apple developers really should include a timeout function on iTunes search for a shared libraries. At least a visual dialog to confirm that the application is in the process of searching for a shared library on the network would help provide clues as to what is causing the spinning beach ball to appear right about the time the application window should pop up. -
Any way to search for casts in java source code?
Anyone know of a decent way to search your java source files to find all the casts?
I ended up doing a simple text search for
" = ("(quote marks not included) which works for my code because I am strict about writing my casts with spaces like
String s = (String) iterator.next();Unfortunately, the above search has all kinds of problems with both false positives and negatives. It picks up lots of irrelevant lines like
int index = (number > 0) ? 0 : 1;as well as misses casts that appear nested inside expressions like
((String) iter.next()).charAt(...)I suppose that one could do a regular expression search for any pair of open and close parens which bound non-blank text, but that would pick up even more non-cast expressions in typical java code.
I think that the only way to properly do this is to have a tool which understands java syntax.
Anyone know of an IDE which will do this? Does IntelliJ or Netbeans support this kind of search?
In case you are wondering why I am interested in this, it is because I am refactoring some code to fully use generics, and searching for casts is one source of identifying candidates for genericity.cliffblob wrote:

Can I search for pdf and word documents at the same time in finder?
I often want to search for more than one file type at a time - for instance pdfs and word docs in a directory, or Jpgs, GIFs, PNGs etc.
Can I do this in the finder in one go (so I can save it as a folder I can then select when I want to)?
I tried typing OR between the 'tokens' it creates, but then it just searches for OR - so not as intelligent as one would think?!
Surely there must be a way to do something as simple as this?

RobForget the whole "tokens" business (I think that is a pretty useless "improvement" to constructing Spotlight searches). Hit command-F to bring up the search window, and set your first criteria, in the example I changed it from the default Kind to Created Date, to keep the number of results manageable. Now hold down the Option key and click on the "+" at the end of the criteria line, it will change to "..." and you get a new criteria line. From the dropdown menu choose "Any" if necessary (this will give you the Boolean OR), then enter what you want in the first sub-head. To get a second sub-head OR criteria click the "+" at the end of the Any line.
I don't generate many MS Word docs, so I just stopped in the example above after typing Microsoft, since that brought up all the MS anything I have from this year (a couple of Power Point thingies sent to me by friends).

Hi everyone, I am having issues updating a clean Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2, so any help with be appreciated cause I've already tried all my cards for the past 5 days in this particular issue without success.
All I did so far is installing Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 2, open IE to update, it keeps searching for updates and never stop, after 20mn to 30mn the process svchost.exe start using 100% of my CPU.
I already tried the following scenarios:
1- Install IE8, install the update KB927891 and the Windows Update Agent 3.0 (I already had this one installed). Reboot and run windows update trough IE8 and the problem did not solved.
2- Install those 2 software "MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run" and "MicrosoftFixit50777", open IE to update, it still hangs and continues eating my CPU. This is the output of "MicrosoftFixit".
Windows Update error 0x8007000D(2014-01-06-T-06_06_34A) --> Not Fixed
Cryptographic service components are not registered (This service is actually running successfully) --> Not Fixed
3- I found the following script that would register some DLL, deleting the "SoftwareDistribution" and forcing windows update to solve the problem and nothing happened either.

Herein is the root cause of your issue. A topic that's been discussed in several blogs, forums, and even in the media since September regards a known issue with attempting to patch IE6 RTM via Windows Update.
Aside from that particular issue... browsing the Internet with an unpatched instance of IE6, especially from a Windows Server system, is also asking for a world of hurt.
Might I suggest the following:
Download the IE8 for Windows Server 2003 installer to a thumb drive.
Download the latest Cumulative Security Update for IE8 for Windows Server 2003 to a thumb drive.
Reinstall Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2.
Upgrade to IE8 from the thumb drive installer and apply the
Cumulative Security Update.
Now your machine is capable of safely browsing to Windows Update to install the rest of the updates (well, maybe, there's also all those other Security Updates from the past seven years that your machine still has vulnerabilites for -- even those seven
years of updates are going to take a Very Long Time to scan for, download, and install).
Why don't you have a WSUS server? -- noting, wryly, that you've posted in the *WSUS* forum.

I need advise and help with this problem .
First , I have been with Mac for many years ( 14 to be exact ) I do have some knowledge and understanding of Apple product .
At the present time I'm having lots of problems with the router so I was looking in to some info , and come across one web site regarding : port forwarding , IP addresses .
In my frustration , amongst lots of open web pages tutorials and other useless information , I come across innocent looking link and software to installed called Genieo , which suppose to help with any router .
Software ask for permission to install , and about 30 % in , my instinct was telling me , there is something not right . I stop installation . Delete everything , look for any
trace in Spotlight , Library . Nothing could be find .
Now , every time I open Safari , Firefox or Chrome , it will open in my home page , but when I start looking for something in steed of Google page , there is
''search.genieo.com'' page acting like a Google . I try again to get raid of this but I can not find solution .
With more research , again using genieo.com search eng. there is lots of articles and warnings . From that I learn do not use uninstall software , because doing this will install more things where it come from.
I do have AppleCare support but its to late to phone them , so maybe there some people with knowledge , how to get this of my computer
Any help is welcome , English is my learned language , you may notice this , so I'm not that quick with the respondGenieo definitely doesn't help with your router. It's just adware, and has no benefit to you at all. They scammed you so that they could display their ads on your computer.
