'searching for new drivers' endlessly after leopard installation

Cannot print after installing 10.5.1 on my g4 MacBook. It 'sees' the printer, but it cant bring up the driver. I have tried a Canon PM500 and an HP 2400, connected to USB port and to my Airport base station, I have done the special installation from the disk for both Canon and HP, I have 'reset printing system', I have downloaded drivers from Canon website. I reinstalled (regular) 10.5 on the G4 MacBook. They all say installation successful, and the printer is recognized in the printer chooser, but then the spiral turns endless looking for driver. The printing to the same printer from my MacBookPro (intel) works fine.
Any suggestions

on the 'rinting' topics, someone suggested throwing away all the drivers and downloading from the websiet. And it worked.

  • Leopard-Searching for new drivers: Canon iP5000

I have recently installed Leopard. When I try to print I get a box stating that no printer is selected. I go to Add Printer . . . and another window pops up with a list and there is my Canon iP5000/USB. When I select it I get a message in the window that says "searching for new drivers" and the spinning gear goes for awhile and then just blinks. I tried installing the Canon driver update from Nov but that did not work. Can anyone help me?

I had the exact same problem, although my printer is an iP1500. I tried everything listed here, except the Gimp drivers, to no avail.
When the spinning gear froze on the Add Printer window, I opened the Activity Monitor, double clicked on the Add Printer process and listed open files. I realized that there were a lot of open EPSON driver files. I found this strange, since I have no EPSON printers anywhere in my network. I assumed that something else was interfering with the driver search process.
I solved the problem by doing the following:
    - sudo mv /Library/Printers /Library/Printers_Orig
    - mkdir /Library/Printers
    - chmod 775 /Library/Printers
    - mv /Library/Printers_Orig/Canon/ /Library/Printers/
In essence, the above instructions remove everything except the Canon drivers from the location which the Add Printer application uses to search. When I tried again, the correct driver was almost immediately loaded.
My guess is that the Add Printer application searches everything in the Printers directory and that some other driver (EPSON maybe?) is either corrupt or conflicts somehow with the Canon printer. By leaving only the relevant drivers, the problem goes away.

  • Can't add printer, stuck in the eternal "searching for new drivers"

ah, the leopard upgrade mixed blessing continues....
so of course i have no printers available now that i've installed leopard. and of course i need to print TONIGHT. so i went to add the printer while it was plugged into the port - - and this is AFTER reinstalling the drivers from the cd, AND installing all the printer drivers from the leopard cd (this is an epson stylus photo 1400). And i click to add a printer, and the epson stylus does appear in the list, and proceeds to "search for new drivers" before it will let me do anything.... and it spins forever.
it doesnt help that i'm also having the internet problems that many people are having now too.... and i'm not sure if it's consistent, but i think my internet does cut out eventually after it goes into this driver search.
    any help at all?
    thanks in advance-----
    rita

Just wanted to add another voice to this chorus of dismay. While I have properly installed Leopard; re-installed the manufacturer driver (brother HL-2040) reinstalled the Leopard Printer drivers from the optional install Leopard folder, when I go to find printer drivers (none show up initially) I end up getting a pull down menu offering Canon IJ; Epson FireWire;Epson TECP/IP/and HP IP Printing; and that's it. None of the drivers installed show up not even the one brother HL-2040 installed from the manufacturer's disc.(which is all this modest user needs.)
The bottom line: I can't print anything. I tried the reset option mentioned in one of your posts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mitchull

  • Eternally "searching for new drivers"...

    Hi all,
I just upgraded to Leopard and can't seem to print from my CX4200. I went to Print & Fax, clicked the "+" to add a printer, and I can see my EPSON Stylus CX4200 (USB) in the printer list. I click on it, and the "searching for new drivers" begins with the spinning gear. The system gets hung up here, and I cannot add the printer. The gear just keeps on spinning. The "Print Using" pulldown menu and the "Add" button are also both grayed out, so I can't do anything once this happens.
I tried as many troubleshooting steps as I could find, including the software Print Therapy, and still no luck. I'm avoiding a Leopard reinstall (until the last resort) because I had some other problems with the system updgrade already.
    Any ideas?

I'd visit Epson's Web site and download a driver for your printer. Run the driver installer in "uninstall' mode first, then in "install" mode. Epson driver installers don't seem to do a good job of cleaning up prior material without the "uninstall" step.

  • Stuck on "searching for new drivers"

I've connected a Dymo LabelWriter 450 to the USB port on my Mac (after installing the Dymo software and restarting).
When I go into Add Printer and select the Dymo driver, I get a message saying "searching for new drivers" and a spinning beachball - and it never returns.
I searched the forum and there was a previous thread on the "searching for new drivers"problem that was closed without any resolution.

It would be really helpful if someone came up with a solution to this problem. I get this hang on 'searching for new drivers' with two different HP printers- both recognised by Bonjour but it seems impossible to add them. I only managed to get one of them working (and HP 5850) by installing an opensource HP driver (HPIJS 2.7.10 for Mac) designed originally for Linux users. To get this to work I first had to install foomatic and ghostsript for Mac OS X. See http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs
The second printer is an HP 2570 and this is still causing problems.

  • FIX for Canon MP 600 after leopard installation

I discovered a fix for the Canon MP 600 after the leopard installation. After many challenges and troubleshooting with no positive results I tried something that worked!
Go to Applications on the HD, choose Utilities, Choose airport Utility.app. It will open and ask if you would like an update to the Airport Extreme Utility. Choose 'update' and follow instructions. I then went into the System Preferences, removed the MP 600 printer, downloaded the MP 600 driver from the Canon Website and installed it. I then rebooted the computer, went back to System Preferences, added in the MP 600 and all was working well.
    I hope this helps someone.

on the 'rinting' topics, someone suggested throwing away all the drivers and downloading from the websiet. And it worked.

  • "Searching for new drivers" error

I have an imac G5. The printer HP PSC 1600 series is connected to Airport Extreme. The iMac reconizes the printer but keeps on searching for drivers and ultimately gives the error "server-error-service-unavailable." I downloaded and installed HP Print OS X driver, but it still doesnt work.

    Thanks for the reply DOGG.
I should have stated in my first post that I tried all the usb outlets on the computer and even tried a 4 slot usb expander to no avail.
I don't have an extra usb a/b cable and both Staples and Radio Shack want $20 for that item. (Found it for <$3 on Amazon, go figure). So for a quick answer I took the cable to work and found a computer/printer with the same cable. I replaced that cable with mine and it worked fine. I suppose I will tear into it at least a little to "jiggle, tap and tighten" but it looks like a new printer is in my immediate future.
    Thanks again,
    Mark

  • Software Update Issue-After Leopard Installation

I installed Leopard yesterday and ran the first software update; everything worked OK; the first software updated included three updates: Remote Desktop Client update; iDVD update and Garageband update.
Today I tried to run another update and had this issue: while the Software Update is displaying a message saying "New software is available for your computer" there is nothing listed below and the install button is disabled! Then I went to the Software Update Preference and saw a message there saying Last Attempt Failed; error occurred while checking
Does anyone have the same issue while trying a new software update after Leopard installation?
I do understand there is another new update issued yesterday by Apple regarding login key
Grateful for any insight re this problem

Hi. I had the same problem after doing an erase and install of Leopard yesterday. When I go into Terminal (actually iTerm) and type "softwareupdate -l" (to list all updates), I see:
    XML parser error:
    Encountered unexpected EOF
    Old-style plist parser error:
Malformed data byte group at line 1; invalid hex
This appears to be a problem with com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist, the property list for Software Update, but I'm not sure. If I type "find ~/Library/ -name '*plist' -exec plutil {} \;" to check all the plists, however, the Software Update plist checks out as OK. Furthermore, deleting that property list and rebooting to force the OS to create a new plist does not fix the problem. Weird. Now, if I type "sudo softwareupdate -i -a" to install all updates (change "-a" to "-r" to only install recommended updates), it works fine. I still get that same error when I try to run Software Update normally afterwards, but if I go to the preferences, all of the updates are listed under Installed Updates. So, I can get the OS to update automatically, but only through the Terminal. This is very weird, and I hope someone can shed more light on this situation.

  • Keynote disappeared after leopard installation

I AM HAVING SOME SERIOUS DATA LOSS AND PROGRAM LOCATION PROBLEMS AFTER LEOPARD INSTALLATION.
I can not find my previous keynote application program , which was part of ilife08, where did go?
same thing with adobe files , every program is trial version after LEOPARD INSTALLATION.

Ahh, welcome to the wonderful world of wifi under Leopard. Maybe you weren't aware that tens of thousands of people have been having endless problems with wifi whilst using Leopard .... I just got back from holiday - full signal yet no internet. Connect using ethernet and there it is - working perfectly. The culprit? Apple's very own Airport extreme base station, the new one which I bought thinking my old one was on the blink - nope.
Meanwhile Apple have not said a word about this in the last 8-10 weeks of utter misery for countless people - not a sausage. Many people are counting on 10.5.2 fixing this. I say don't count on it. Remember to complain to Apple as it is their own software/hardware that is at fault here. Meanwhile, they introduce a ... wifi laptop.... ooh the irony.

  • Classic status flashes - searching for new folders

PB G4, 10.4.2, Classic set to launch at boot.
The Classic Status '9' in the menu bar sometimes flashes after booting. It's stop/restart options are greyed out. However Classic apps appear to run normally.
Going to Classic Preferences there is initially a comment 'searching for new folders'. Restarting Classic leads to normal Classic Status display.
Any ideas on what's happening, causes, cures, please?
    Michael

Please note that it is not a workaround.
It is Thunderbird's built in functionality to display:
ALL unread mail in ALL folders in ALL Accounts
when you do not want to start opening folders and manually searching for which folders have the unread mail. It is the fastest simplest method of performing this task on all accounts symultaneously.
If you want to perform a search:
note that you can only perform a search on a per account basis so would have to repeat for each mail account. It is not the fastest nor most efficient method if you have more than one mail account, but it is another option.
    * Edit > Find > Search Messages
    * select the mail account
    * Select 'search subfolders'
    * Select: 'Match all of the following'
    * Select: 'Status' and 'Isn't' and 'Read'.
    * click on 'Search'

    Hi:
You probably need to install the wireless card driver.

  • Bought 4th Gen 3TB TC - streaming TV over the internet is now so slow and now is constantly buffering.  It seems the Airport Utility is always 'searching for new networks' - don't know if this is the problem.  It's not the internet speed as checked that.

Bought 4th Gen 3TB TC - streaming TV over the internet is now so slow and now is constantly buffering.  It seems the Airport Utility is always 'searching for new networks' - don't know if this is the problem.  It's not the internet speed as checked that.  I took my old router upstairs and was streaming TV via my ipad seamlessly - the same program via the TC was constantly buffering.
I just expected to be able to plug in the TC, so a simple set-up and experience wireless both upstairs and downstairs in my house.  For some reason the range is low and speed veru disappointing.
I am far from being an IT expert but I would welcome advice about setting up this TC so we can enjoy the product as it was designed.  Please HELP!

No silver bullet........but my suggestions may drive you in the right direction.
    1.  Unplug the power cable from the TC and wait 10-15 minutes before powering back up.   Seriously wait!
Proceed to #2 if this dosen't help.
    2.  Unplug the power cable from the TC, ubplug the power cable from your Broadband Modem (assuming it's a cable modem), disconnect ethernet, and cable from modem.
2a.  Wait 10-15 minutes then re-connect cable, ethernet, and power back to modem (your modem should power up unless you have a power switch)  wait for all the modem lights to come on EXCEPT activity.
2b.  Connect ethernet from modem to TC, and plug in the power cable to TC.
Proceed to #3 if this dosen't help.
    3.  Reconfigure the TC.........Read here........http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
All really simple to do....if you need additional help let me (us) know.

  • HT4623 I have a white square in the middle of my apps screen, and I am unable to search for new apps.

I am unable to search for new apps because I have a blank white square in the middle of the Apps screen.

Have you tried a reset (different from just restarting)
Hold down on both the Home button AND the Sleep/Wake button for about 10 seconds until you get to the black screen and see the Apple logo. Then let go of both buttons. This "reset" fixes a lot of weird iPad issues and might fix yours.
    Hope this helps!
