Searching for shared files over a server network using a client computer

I think spotlight can only be used to search for files on a local computer. Is there a way to search for shared files on a server from a logged in client computer?

It should work on shared HFS volumes. You would have to start the search from the Finder, not from the Spotlight menu.

  • Sharing files over a home network...

    I have a 2 year old iMac sitting in my basement.. I use it, and it is currently home to a ton of photos, videos and sound files (Logic as well as itunes). This week I plan on getting a Macbook to tootle with on the main floor (the basement is cold. ;))
    I would love to be able to share files (and back them up as well.. kinda a nother issue).
    As it stands right now, I have a 250 GB external drive which is backing up the iMac (but has hit it's limit).. need more space.
    in addition I have a D-Link DLR 655... great little router. I believe it has Network capability in that I think through something called SharePort it can help you share files across a network.. no idea how.
    So, yeah, that's about it.. anyone have any good tips in terms of building out a comprehensive backup system in conjunction with a file sharing capability across two macs (and maybe even a PC or two) across my home network?
    Finally, how would that even work.. let's say I have an image on the imac, when I open it on the macbook, would I see it in iPhoto?
    Lotsa questions.. thank you so much.
    Jay.

    Hi
    Its not that obvious from the supplied information if you're talking about OSX Server? Perhaps your question might get more attention if you posted here:

    Which is the main Leopard Forum. You could also look here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=599
    Click 'more options' in the Search field, select All, Last Year and key in 'networking'. Should reveal something? This article might help:

    What you're asking is simple enough. Connect all of your nodes (network devices; eg: macs, pcs, printers etc) to a switch or router or combination of the two. Depends on how many nodes you have. Wired (Ethernet) or Wireless will do. Make sure the router is providing IP addresses. Basically is its built-in DHCP Service switched on? By default most of them are. Once that's done and you've verified they can all access the internet, enable File Sharing. System Preferences > Sharing for the Macs and for the PCs right click the 'C' drive > Properties > Sharing.
    Backup is a vast subject and its difficult to be concise. A lot depends on your skill set, means, budget and location. You could search this and the XServe/XServe RAID Forums as it has been discussed many times. A basic principle is to make sure you can effectively restore what you backup. Most people forget this when implementing an effective backup strategy. To start you off purchase a large enough external hard drive. Connect to all your macs and simply drag/drop what you want. If you have Leopard use Time Machine. For the PCs use something appropriate. Photos & Music can be transferred from mac to mac by simply enabling the options in the applications themselves. ITunes > Preferences > Sharing: Look for Shared Libraries; Share this Library. When you launch iPhoto hold down the option key. It's fairly obvious after that.
    If you double-click on an image presented in the Finder (shared) on one mac then your mac will use whatever application it can find that it thinks can handle the file. For image files that could be Preview or Quicktime or if you have it installed an image editing application such as Photoshop. You can even define which application handles which type of file by control-clicking on the file itself and selecting 'Open With'. This is fairly basic 'how to use your mac' stuff which you should know?

  • How to search for a file at application server?

    Hi,
    I need to choose one file for further processing from the directory, located into 'WORK' directory at application server. As far as I see, class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES and FILE_OPEN_DIALOG woudn't help me - it's a 'FRONTEND_SERVICES'.... and work with directories at presentation server.
    The requirement is that the user has no file sharing from his local PC to the mentioned directory at application server - this directory is visible only in the scope of the application server. I need something as flexible as CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_OPEN_DIALOG, if exist.
    How can I achieve this?
    Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Thanks to all contributors!
    After short testing I found the following:
    1. F4_DXFILENAME_TOPRECURSION is not what I was looking for - it doesn;t behave as expected.
    2. FM EPS_GET_DIRECTORY_LISTING would help if I need the result into an internal table (thsi would be a case too), but it doesn;t prompt for selection. Helpful, anyway.
    3. /SAPDMC/LSM_F4_SERVER_FILE is the closest match to the requirements.
    Thanks to all.

    Here is my problem:
    I have great backups on WHS2011, but only need to restore a couple of files.  I am looking for a file a non-standard program uses, and it is not in any of the normal places.  I can restore the file if I can find it, but is there a way I can search

  • Remote Desktop/Access shared files over PPTP VPN

    Hello,
    I just bought the RV180W so I can connect to my office computer from anywhere as a VPN client. The two things I need to do while I am connected as a VPN client is to be able to access my files on my office desktop and be able to remote desktop to it as well. I have Win7 on all of my computers. Ideally, I would like to do that over PPTP VPN connection but if that is not possible I can try Cisco QuickVPN software.
    I enabled PPTP on my router and created a user account. I was also able to successfully establish the connection remotely. While I was connected as a PPTP VPN client, I was able to access the Internet and my router setup page which is telling me that the connection is good. However, I was not able to either discover my office PC under my network tab in Win7 nor I was able to remote desktop. I keep my office PC on all the time and it never go to sleep. I did not create any connection policy but maybe this is the problem. Please let me know if you know of a solution.
    Thanks!

    Hi David,
    Thank you for the response.
    I was able to access the router configuration using the local IP address (in my case 192.168.1.1). I don't think I would have been able to access it using the public IP address since I have the router remote management feature disabled.
    Now after reading your email, I was finally able to remote desktop and access shared files through a PPTP VPN connection. Here is what I did:
    1- I separted the PPTP VPN IP address range from my DHCP range (in my case, PPTP VPN range is 192.168.1.200 to 210 and my DHCP range is from 192.168.1.100 to 199)
    2- I assigned my office desktop PC that I am trying to remote desktop to a fixed IP address (192.168.1.20)
    3- For remote desktop, I had to type the IP address (192.168.1.20). Typing the PC name (officepc) or searching for was not working.
    4- For shared files, I had to map a network drive as //192.168.1.20/My Pictures for example. I couldn't find my PC when searched for it under Network.
    After doing all that, I was able to do kinda what I wanted. Ideally, I would have liked to avoid using fixed IP addresses and be able to access computers by their name and see them under the Network tab. Is their a way to do this? I noticed that RV220W offers SSL VPN, would that help me?
    I would appreciate it if you could answer my last two questions.
    Thanks!
    Mustafa

  • Unable to share files over the local network, OS X Lion

    About two weeks ago, my coworker and I realized that we were no longer able to share files over the local network. We have not made any changes to our preference settings. We are able to access FileMaker Pro databases files located on another computer in our office via the network, but we are unable to access any other files by trying to login to the computer remotely. We also have internet access. I am able to login to each of our work computers form home, but not from the office. I'm am not sure what has changed, but it is important that we have the ability to share files at work. Can you give me directions on how to fix our problem. Thanks!

    I had this problem when I first setup my Mac. One thing I know is that File Sharing in System Preferences doesn't necessarily need to be on, because iTunes does all of the networking itself.
    I know that you've checked and checked again on the firewall, but what I did was turn the firewall on. In the list of ALLOW, there should be a line that is labeled iTunes Music Sharing. Check it. It was the magic link, and all of my iTunes libraries on the three computers in the house (two Windows, one my Mac) could "see" each other.
    Turning on the firewall might seem strange, but it worked for me.
    I hope this helps.

  • Sending Files over a Windows Network

    I am trying to send files from one computer to the other over a windows network. I have absolute path names of the two locations.
    Can you just use "File.renameTo(File);" to pull this off?
    Is there a fast way to move files over a windows network?
    Thanks so much for your help

    With File.renameTo()? Yes.
    between directories on different local drives? Yes.
    or different nodes in a network?I'm not sure what you mean by that, which is most probably my lack of knowledge about computer networking.
    Here's the test I performed:
    File a = new File("C:/Temp/test.txt");
    // 'E:' is (physicaly) a different hard drive than 'C:'
    File b = new File("E:/Temp/test.txt");
    System.out.println(a.renameTo(b));
    // 'Athene' is a home-SAN-drive/server connected to my router
    File c = new File("//Athene/SHARE/Temp/test.txt");
    System.out.println(b.renameTo(c));Both print true and in both cases I have checked to see if the files really were moved, which was the case.

  • How to search for a file?

    Hi I am currently using the below code to detect a file automaticaly in a thumbdrive. So currently I have to state the path directory to detect the particular file. Is there a way to search for the file in the thumbdrive using Java?
    public class Detect {
    public static void main(String[] args)
    File f = new File("f:\\");
    while (! f.exists())
    try { Thread.sleep(500); }
    catch (InterruptedException e) {}
    System.out.println("drive inserted!");
    }

    You'll need to recursively search through a top directory and all its subdirectories for all files. Here is a link how to do this.
    http://www.javapractices.com/Topic68.cjp
    You can search for all drives A through Z for the file (using something like new File("F:") and catching the exception if not found (and dont do anything with the exception). But exclude C and D drive since they are usually hard drives and take forever to search through. Also, you may want to use File.separator instead of '/" or '\' in your code since windowsXP uses one while Unix uses the other and you would want your code to be able to run on either operating system.
    Are you building a web page with this? if so, it will not work since your search code would be running on the server and not on the client's machine. Even if you were able to run it on the client machine via his browser, you cant because of security reasons (end users dont want to give you access to thier drives). If its a web page, look into file upload html tag called <input type="file". This allows the end-user to navigate on his machine to where the file is and download it without you having to search for it.
    If you writing an application instead of a web page, I think there is an applet you can use that will do the same thing as <input type="file".
    Searching though a directory structure isn't good since it takes too long for users t wait.

  • Searching for a file in java

    What I am trying to do is not very uncommon. I want to open a file in it's default application (or at least in a common one.)
    Mainly I am currently thinking either HTML files or PDF's.
    What I was wondering is how to search for a file and get its directory path. For example I want to search for the file "Acrobat". In windows its directory is "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe"
    But I know in MAC or Unix the path could be very different. Not only that, but what if they did not use the default installation directory. I just want to find the path of a file by invoking a search. Is there currently any way to do this?
    I know I can open a JFileChooser and make the user search and find the program they wish to run it in, but that certainly is not very user friendly. I'd rather the program just searched for the proper application(s) and then called the exec() method to run the file in the program.
    Any help is appreciated.

    java.io.File provides a listRoots() method that returns all file system roots. So for Windoze you'd get 'A:/', 'B:/' 'C:/' ... etc.
    Unix you'd get '/' and so on.
    Now you can use other File methods to recursively scan the roots.
    Here's some (untried) code to get you going that searches for all java.exe found on all roots.
    import java.io.File;
    import java.util.Arrays;
    import java.io.FilenameFilter;
    import java.util.List;
    import java.io.IOException;
    public class FindIt {
      public FindIt () {
        File[] roots = File.listRoots();
        List list = new ArrayList();
        for (int i = 0; i < roots.length; i++) {
          scan(roots,list,new FilenameFilter(){
    public boolean accept(File file, String name) {
    return new File(file,name).isDirectory() ||
    name.equals("java.exe");
    public static void scan(File path,
    List list,
    FilenameFilter filter) throws IOException {
    // Get filtered files in the current path
    File[] files = path.listFiles(filter);
    // Process each filtered entry
    for (int i = 0; i < files.length; i++) {
    // recurse if the entry is a directory
    if (files[i].isDirectory()) {
    scan(files[i],list,filter);
    else {
    // add the filtered file to the list
    list.add(files[i]);
    } // for
    } // scan
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    new FindIt();
    You will run into problems with some roots as they will be removeable media (cd's diskettes) or network drives (potentially huge number of dirs to scan). So I do not recommend that you search on all roots, but a subset.

  • Searching for Adobe Files

    An update has changed the way I search for my .pdf files and I don't like it.  It takes me to recent files.  How do I change it back to the way it was before?  HELP!!!!

    Hi Sara,
      No ... when I am in adobe acrobat and I need to search for a file, I have a new screen that shows up that lists all files opened recently (it's a full page or more) and if I need to search for a specific file, I have to click on the My Computer link (on left hand side) and browse to search.  I have never had to do that before.  I use to be able to go directly to my network folders and search that way.  It is an update that adobe did I think.  Have you seen this?  If so, can you help to get it back to normal?

  • I have 3 older ext. hard drives that I've utilized many times. Today while searching for old files, one of the three is no longer recognized by my PowerMac.  Any suggestions?

    I have 3 older ext. hard drives that I've utilized many times. Today while searching for old files, one of the three is no longer recognized by my PowerMac. The drive is not listed in Disk Utility.  Any suggestions?

    Is the computer in you equipment line:
    Dual Core Intel Xenon
    (which is not a PowerMac but a Mac Pro) the one you are asking about, or do you have an older PowerMac?
    If a Mac Pro, their forums are here:
    Mac Pro
    and, as Mac Pros have a totally different architecture from the pre-2005 Macs this forum covers, you may not have the same issues that can affect the older models. If someone didn't notice your equipment line, you could get advice that doesn't apply.
    If you really have a pre-2005 PowerMac, read on.
    If the stubborn external is USB and does not have its own power brick (i.e., it gets power only from the computer's UBS ports--"bus powered"), it may not be getting enough power. As electric motors age, they can demand more power than when new, and the power available on any USB port is limited.
    The typical workabouts to making a computer recognize an aging, bus-powered USB drive are:
    Get a powered USB hub (has its own power brick
    Get a "Y" USB cable: 1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
    The second gets power from two USB ports on the computer and often that's enough.
    Remember that the USB ports on your keyboard seldom provide enough power even for a thumb drive, so be sure to use the USB ports on the back of the computer.
