Searching for USB to VGA or DVI adapter compatible with linux

Hello everyone,
Since my HP mini is lacking a VGA connector (in fact, there's a proprietary one, but the cable for that is rare and expensive), I'm thinking of buying an USB adapter to plug a monitor.  I don't care if the connector is VGA or DVi.
There're a lot of these adapters, but I'm not sure if any is compatible with Linux.
After a lot of searches, I still didn't find something  useful.
Is there anyone who had experience with this kind of adapter or can point me some documentation about that ?

Just so I understand correctly... these USB to VGA/DVI adapters are video cards in their own right, yes? Something that I know works with Linux it the Villagetronic VTBook http://www.villagetronic.com/vtbook/index.html. It's a PCMCIA card (which is faster than usb 2) but you can get USB to PCMCIA adapters.

  • Using 23" Cinema Display and VGA to DVI adapter??

I have 4 computers (2 deskop PCs, 1 IBM thinkpad laptop and 1 MAC). I have a DVI switcher. 3 of my PCs work great. My IBM thinkpad (T23) has an old style DVI connector on it that I cannot use (I thought I could until I got the Apple Monitor). I have tried a passive (no power) VGA to DVI adapter...but the monitor just ignores the signal. Do I need to purchase a $299 powered VGA to DVI adapter? I was thinking of looking for a PCMCIA (PC Card) video card with DVI out for my laptop, but havn't found anything when searching via google. Any information would be helpful. Thank you!

The VGA to DVI adapter sounds like it's just an adapter that re-routes the pins to make the cables connect. The DVI connector can carry both analog and digital signals, so all the adapter would do is make a VGA cable with its analog signal go into a DVI cable that still carries the same analog signal. If that's the case, it won't work with the Apple display since the Apple display doesn't accept an analog VGA input even if you get the cables and adapters to hook it up. So yes, you would need the expensive VGA to DVI "converter" rather than just an "adapter".

  • Can I use the Apple VGA to DVI adapter to connect a PC to a DVI monitor?

    Hi
Any idea of the Apple VGA to DVI adapter would work to connect a PC's VGA output to a DVI monitor?
Is it a simple pass through?  Or are there drivers needed.

That adapter is for connecting a VGA display to a computer's DVI-I port.  A DVI-I port has both digital and analog video pins.  The adapter passes just the analog video to a VGA connector.  It will not work in the reverse direction because a VGA computer does not provide digital video.
There are VGA to DVI converters that will connect a DVI display to a VGA computer.

The specs of the Adapter ("This accessory is compatible with the following:" in the "Overview" section) don't mention iPod touch 3rd generation. They do mention 1st and 2nd Generation
    Thanks!

    Thank you, Lyssa.
You must be right based on that article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353). The latest model of iPod touch is referred to as "iPod touch (Late 2009)" -- and NOT "iPod touch 3rd generation", as I erroneously assumed.
That completely answers my question about the USB power adapter.

  • Is Sun Storage 7000 Storage replication adapter compatible with 2540 series

We are evaluating VMWare Site Recovery Manager 4.0. Is Sun Storage 7000 Storage replication adapter compatible with 2540 Sun Storage series?

I would say the short answer would be no. The 2540 is a LSI based device, the SRM adapter for that is written by LSI. The 7000
series array is based on OpenSolaris and ZFS, quite a different beast.

  • Looking for a retail available camera that is compatible with FMLE

I am looking for a retail available camera that is compatible with FMLE.  I do not have a computer with HDMI input, and in the past, I have typically ran with a USB connection.  Does anyone know of a camera that is available at a local retail store that would work with FMLE through a USB connection?

Webcams will work, although they may not give you the flexibility that you're looking for with a more traditional "camera".
You may be more interested in looking at a converter/digitizer -- something that can take a variety of inputs and pull those into your computer as a a video source that your computer, and FMLE, sees as a "camera".
    Look at this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/devicematrix.html
You'll see a variety of webcams, capture cards, cameras, and other devices that are known to work with FMLE.  Most of those solutions, however, require the installation of a card or require that you have Thunderbolt connections or FireWire connections.  Not on that list is the Dazzle line of digitizers.  I know several people who use Dazzles with FMLE -- and while each one seems to have issues that you have to be aware of, they do work (some better than others).  As long as you're aware of the issues, it's not a problem working with these devices -- and they're pretty inexpensive.  The Dazzle Video Creator Platinum seems to have the least amount of problems (the only real problem that I'm aware of is that you have to be sure to disable your preview windows in FMLE if you want to make changes to the source settings -- or it will crash FMLE.  But, once you get your settings in place you can enable the preview windows again and don't have to worry about it).  The great thing about a digitizer is that you can now use any camera that can output to standard composite cables (the yellow, red, and white 'RCA' cables -- or SVideo cable).  So your camera selection possabilities increase greatly.
If you're looking for a standalone camera that can deliver a live video feed through USB -- good luck.  I'm sure they're out there, but your choices are going to be very limited.
Personally, I use the Canopus ADVC110 -- which allows me to hook up any camera (or even a playback deck/DVR/DVD player, etc.) that can output composite (RCA) or FireWire or S-Video.  The ADVC110 will not work for you, as you need FireWire to hook up to your computer, but just in case you do have FireWire I can tell you that it is a stellar box with no issues at all.

  • I'm looking for a digital picture frame that is compatible with the iPhone 5 and 4S.  I was looking at the Panasonic MW-20 but from what I can see I don't think it is.  Any information would be great!  Looking to buy a replacement frame for Christmas.

Hi - the new lightning connector on the iPhone 5 has an authentication chip so very few 3rd party manufacturers have come out with compatible devices - so I doubt that you will find a frame that works for both phones - however Apple has come out with 2 apapters - one is a cable and one is a direct 30 pin to lightning device - you would have to check out each frame to see if one of these might work - I looked at the Panasonic and it looks promising but I would check the return policy of anything that you buy in a case it doesn't work.

  • Why aren't the VGA or DVI adapter included?

How come one of the video adapters are not included when purchasing a MacBook Pro? I would think that the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter would at least be included. In previous models of the MacBook Pro a Dual-Link DVI port was on the laptop and a DVI to VGA adapter was included in the box. Now we have to pay for an adapter that should be included? And why do we need a $99 adapter for Dual-Link DVI support? This should be built into the laptop as it was before.
I just did a price compare between what our college purchased before and what will be purchased now.
    On September 18th, 2008:
    MacBook Pro 15-inch
    2.4 GHz Processor
    SuperDrive 8x
    200 GB SATA HDD @ 7200 RPM
    15-inch Glossy Widescreen Display
Accessory Kit (that included the Manuals, AC Power Adapter, Display polishing cloth, the install discs, a DVI to VGA converter)
    4 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
    AppleCare Protection Plan
    $2,308.00
    However, today, October 16th, 2008, I respeced out the laptop;
    MacBook Pro 15-inch
    2.4 GHz Processor
    SuperDrive 8x
    250GB SATA HDD @ 7200 RPM
    15-inch Glossy Widescreen Display
Accessory Kit (that included the Manuals, AC Power Adapter, Display polishing cloth, and the install discs)
    4 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 DSRAM
    AppleCare Protection Plan
    $2,318
Okay, so the memory is faster, but the price difference between the 2GB of RAM and 4GB of RAM is only $135. However when looking at the price of memory (4GB for the 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro 15-inch) on Apple's site I get $300. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the same price it was before with the earlier models. So there shouldn't be any price adjustment for the memory. The drive was also increased to 250GB but being that this is now the smallest drive size (and with falling prices on drives) there shouldn't be a price difference with this either. We also loose the DVI to VGA converter ($17). So we are paying more for less.
Because you now have to buy the converters for the new video connector the price gets even higher. $29 for either the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter or Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, or $99 for the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.
Instead of hitting the customer with an al-la-carte of extra items to purchase, why doesn't apple continue to include a standard DVI port on the computer with the DVI to VGA adapter with the laptop?

I agree. If Apple would like more people to use the MB and MBP in a business environment you MUST have an easy way to connect the machine to a projector! Nickleing and dimeing people to get an adapter is CRAZY Apple! You are selling even the base machine for at least $1200! The cable cost you MAYBE $1.50 to make... Come on, put one in the box! Don't make people buy one to make it work with a projector! Almost every other laptop in the world comes ready to drive a projector DIRECTLY!

  • USB-to-VGA adapter compatible with Mac?

    Hi,
I'm trying to hook up an additional external monitor to my MacBook Pro using a USB-to-VGA adapter. I don't need any kind of graphics acceleration.
Here is the type of adapter I'm looking at:
    http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GUC2015V
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812203013
Apparently some have gotten the 2nd one to work on Linux with the sisusb driver. Does anybody know if this is compatible with Mac OS X?
    Thank you!
    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB memory

Your Mac came with a DVI to VGA adapter. Why do you need a USB one, when the DVI one is faster and more reliable?
    Note the specs:

If yours was missing the adapter which is shown "In the box", call AppleCare to ask a replacement be sent.

  • Searching for USB Wireless for OS 9/X

    Hello,
I am in search of a wireless USB adapter which works for OS 9 and also OS X. Can someone provide me with the name of some vendors who still carry 802.11b usb adapters for Mac OS 9?
    Thanks.

Bluetooth for Mac on an USB stick
I used this for many years for connecting to my old desktop G4, and i guess i might have used it on OS 9.2.x too. Used it with my "fancy" *Nokia 6230i* with the impressive 2G network (ref- http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6230i-1087.php), mostly for photo transfers, but also with BluePhoneElite managing my SMS messages, backing them up to my Mac, the important ones. Worked like a dream, mostly.
Just to day i removed it from my USB HUB to day, where it was still connected to an active up and going G4, where it worked well also in OS X up to OS 10.4.11 (haven't updated the G4 further, since it only is in use besides my new iMac.)
Point is, this is a version 1 USB, but it also works with USB 2 devices, as is my experience with USB 1 and 2. I may run USB 1 on USB 2 devices, but only with the speed of the version standard.
The USB Bluetooth stick i used is: D-Link Model No: DBT-120. It got the MacUser (magazine) awards of 2002. I did a search at search.yippy.com (D-Link DBT-120) and found it here http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=34
...Since my early version it's updated to USB 2 standard, but it may well work still for older Macs running OS 9.x.
Further search for buying some to day showed Amazon on the top of th pirice list, at $ 79.95!!!
    - On the D-Link homepage you also find links for reatilers, and then the prices varies from $23 to $ 40, shown in the javascript pop-up window for the retailers.

  • Usb or firewire to dvi adapter

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro without a DVI port (or any dedicated display port) and an extrenal monitor that connects by DVI. I googled usb to dvi adapter and found some for sale, but reviews talked about flickering monitor etc. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these? Can you recommend a brand? Is firewire better?
    Thanks for any feedback

That is an old one. Not really familiar with it, here is Apple's manual for it http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/CinemaDisplays_20_23_30inchUserGuide.pdf
in case you don;t have one.
Not sure you need the USB and FireWire plugged in for the display to work as a display, I think they were there so that you could use the USB and FireWire ports on the display to plug in other devices to the  system, kind of like a hub.
As for the DVI cable didn;t one come with the display?  You'd need some way to go from DVI to mini-dvi to connect to the MBP. There  will also be issues with the graphic card in the MBP, if it has the capability to drive the monitor.
Sorry I can't be of more help,
    good luck
    regards

  • Hp pavilion a6600f vga to dvi adapter problem

I have 2 LG flat screen monitors and a new HP Pavilion a6600f desktop. The VGA to DVI adapters that I've tried haven't worked. Do you know where I can get one that is the right one?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

the only thing I can think is the monitors dont support DVI-A (a for analog), and only supports DVI-D (Digital)    Analog DVI uses different pins on a DVI cable.
If your monitor has a VGA input, use that its the same quality as DVI-A anyway.
