Searching iCal for past events

I am trying to search iCal for a past event. The search window only is giving me events in the current month or in the future. I am on an iMac running 10.8.5. If i manually go back a month I can see an instance of this event that is not showing up in the search results. If I try Spotlight I get the same results. I feel like this is something simple that I am missign but I just can't figure it out!

I suppose this should be Searching Calendar ver. 6.0 not iCal--sorry!

  • Search iCal for all events in a specific calendar?

Is it possible to search for all events that I have listed in a specific calendar? For example, I have one set up as "guests" and would like to see a list of all the events I have under that. I tried doing an ical search for guests, but nothing came up, as that's only the calendar's title.
    Thank you.

I thought I was the only klutz who seemed to remember I used to be able to do this, but couldn't figure it out now. This is the second key feature for me (the other being the event info drawer) that's been dropped in iCal 3.0. I'm not sure if the development team is just basically misguided, or if Apple's excuse in the summer about putting off Leopard because programming talents were stretched too thin was, and still is, exactly what's happening.
    So disappointing.

  • Turning off alarms for past events

I use .Mac to sync my iCal calendars among three computers. Two are laptops which are not always on and one is a Mini which is always on. I use alarms for most of my events and the Mini sends out these alarms just fine. The problem is that when I open iCal on one of the laptops, it sends out a bunch of alarms for past events.
I have the "Turn off alarms when iCal is not open" box checked on both my laptops. And the iCal scheduler (can't find the exact name) is not running on the laptops and is not in my login apps list.
What I want is to able to continue to sync iCal but not have the laptops send out alarms. I don't want to delete events after they have past because I like to see past events in the calendar.
Is it possible to continue to sync via .Mac but turn off all alarms on the laptops? Or is it possible to delete the alarm associated with an event after the event is past? This would not work 100% of the time since I could open iCal on the laptop before the latest sync occurred and the alarm would still be there but it would cut down on the number of old alarm events. This may require an AppleScript and I am totally ignorant about coding AppleScript.
    Thanks.

  • IOS 7 Calendar alerting for past events

Has anyone else experienced this ...
At 9:30 this morning (03-Oct) I got an alert for an event from last week (26-Sep).
Then at 10:00 I got an alert for another event from last week (26-Sep).
Upon examining the events, I saw the alerts set as:
    9:30 event – alert 1 = one week before
    10:00 event – alert 1 = 1 day before, alert 2 = 1 week before
After upgrading to iOS7 I set the default calendar alert to "1 week before" – that might explain why the second event's alert 2 is set earlier than alert 1.
But it doesn't explain the "you were supposed to be doing this last week" alert popping up.
Any thoughts (other than some date arithmetic gone awry)?

iPilot1 - after I upgraded to iOS 7.0.3 I got an even bigger surprise - the default alert time for any new event I created was "7 days after". I kid you not. At the top of the list of options, before "None".
However I just went back to the Calendar settings to check the default alert time, and nothing was ticked.
I chose "1 week before", and Hey Presto, new events default to "1 week before".
Of course, I won't know this has worked for sure until I get an alert.

  • ICal keeps sending alarms for past events and won't let me delete items from calendar, I hit delete but the event just keeps multiplying on my calendar?

iCal just started repeatedly sending me alarms a couple of days ago. I thought deleting the event from my calendar would help but it won't let me delete them, they just keep multiplying in my calendar. Help please

    Hello again,
Well I seem to have overcome the problem, but not easily, and not by identifying the cause. I don't like that I don't know what caused the trouble. I make no guarantees, but this is what I did (on an iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Be sure to create backup copies of your files first:
[Note: before you do any of this, you may want to try running Disk Utility program (found in Applications/Utilities/) and run the "Repair Permissions" option. See if that solves anything, but it didn't for me]
    a) I exported my iCal as an archive: Menu item, "File/Export/iCal Archive...". This won't likely do you any good, though, as something was wrong with it and I could not re-import it. But try anyhow.
    b) After backing them up, I deleted the folders and contents inside the Calendars folder: "Users/<your user name>/Library/Calendars/<subdirectories>". To create a backup, right-click on the Calendar folder and choose "compress Calendars" from the pop-up menu. Then drag the folder contents into the trash.
    c) After creating backup copies, delete (drag into the trash) these preferences files found in "Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences" (the slashes delimit the folder names):
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iCal.helper.<some convoluted hex number>.plist
    d) Restart your computer;
    e) Launch iCal and reimport the individual calendar files you exported earlier.
    Hopefully all is well.
Let me emphasize again that you will not likely succeed in reimporting the calendar archive. In the first place it likely contains corrupted data that caused your trouble in the first place. So you will need to import the individual calendars that have been exported. Be very certain to export these individually first.
And if you want to make doubly certain, then copy and paste some of your important and key events into a TextEdit file and save that file in case you don't succeed.
Perhaps you subscribed to some online calendar? If I recall correctly I had imported a calendar when the World Cup Soccer series was happening; I speculate that might have contributed to the issue. I wish I could have found exactly what caused the trouble. It may have been some older, less compatible format that was retained through a series of Mac OS updates.
    Good luck.

  • Icalendar keeps sending notification reminders for past events that have deleted. These were set up as reoccurring, but I no longer need. I have a mac which has my calendar synced. Also use google calendar. What do I need to do to fix this?

    PLEASE HELP

Doing that to hold an application to a desktop seems to work for me, but a more annoying problem is when I assign Mail to the far left desktop space and then then go full screen.  Mail is suddenly shoved to the far right desktop.  I gotta say, as a Unix admin that remembers the wonderful simplicity of OpenLook, this is really annoying.
And why can't I use a 2D grid anymore for my spaces?
Mission Control looks pretty, but it is a huge step backwards compared to what virtual desktop software could do 16 years ago.

  • Can you add a past event Into iCal?  I want to do this for record keeping.

I want to add past events to my icalendar for record keeping. When I try it disappears right after I add.  Can I do this?

You don't mention your OS or iCal versions but, based on my own OSX.6.8 and iCal v4.0.4 (1395.7) then go to ...
    iCal > Preferences > Advanced
... and look at the Option for Delete events n days after they have passed and ensure that either the option is not checked (which should keep past events for ever) or set to the number of days after which you are happy that past events get deleted.
Other parameters can also be set for the treatment of To Do items within that same preference panel.
I guess, although I do not know, that other versions of iCal and Calendar have similar options somewhere within user customisation.

  • ICal Search doesn't find events in the "distant" future !!!

I posted this in LEOPARD and at the end, no resolution and "Fred II" recommended I post this is this Snow Leopard discussion - he sent me this link -- appreciate any comments!
Here's a bit of a disturbing one: I use iCal (Leopard, so iCal 3.0.8 1287) to keep track of many things- not just a meeting next week or a TO DO - but also for long-term planning. I wanted to enter a reminder for about December 2016 concerning social security - but first wanted to check if I hadn't already done this. I typed social in the iCal search box and everything through 2009 came up.
But, I said, that's a bit strange since I was almost sure I'd put something into iCal already.
OK so then I went to the date 28 August 2017 (shift-cmd-T) and once there, I did the same search - and voila - my event about "social security" from 17 Nov 2016 showed-up in the serach results section!!! (I later tried going to March 2016 and it worked as well - so seems it has to be within a few months / year from the date-- ?!?)
Went back to another date closer to today (28 March 2010) - it did not show up.
For other searches, some events for April 2010 have showed-up; but nothing 3 years in the future.
For some repeating items I get results showing 2008 - 2011, but never further than that if I start the search on today's date. (I get all events from past dates all the time).
Another "workaround" is that if I type the word social into Spotlight, it finds the 17 Nov 2016 event.
Is this a "bug" that iCal cannot find distant future events? Any comments or other people's experience really appreciated. It's not good, this - (like doing a search on an Excel Spreadsheet and only getting recently dated information or something like that. Not good).
    Appreciate any feedback here.

DID NOT WORK - STILL NOTHING FOR 2016 - 2017
I suspect this is a bug or a limitation in the iCal program. After 3-4 hours of a rebuild in Spotlight, I tried searching from today's date for social - same as before - gets the past events; but I had to move to 2017 and re-searc to see my 2016 and 2017 events.
So this is a MAJOR MESS - but or limitation of the program.
Ah, 1993 there was the wonderful DayTimer program - could assign several labels to each event - and a whole lot more. iCal and Address Book are good - but really need something more - and also an integrated "OneNote" type program to easily handle addresses, events, photos, web sites, eM, letters and much more...
But back to this issue - it is NOT solve nor resolved. Bit of a disappointment here.
Any ideas or ??? - let me know!
    Thanks and regards,

  • ICal for iPhone. View all events as a list without having to type into the earth box.

iCal for iPhone. View all events as a list without having to type into the earth box.
On the previous software version I used to be able to view all my calendar events as a list by clicking on the magnifying glass. Now you have to type into the search dialog box for a list to populate. This is very frustrating and annoying because I much prefer the list format to populate everything unless I specify what I am looking for into the search box. Is there a way to view all the events as a list without having to type anything into the search box?

And you are aware of the possible options for listing the months and having an optional export value for each month.
For listing the months, you can use a number, a 3 character string, or the full name.
For the export value, the full name, the 3 character value, the 1-2 number, or the 0-11 JavaScript value.
I would look at deciding how you want to populate the drop down box and build a one page form with just this field. You can then insert that page into a PDF and copy the field as needed and then delete the inserted page. Or you could create an FDF file to create the drop down box.

  • Ical deleted all my past events

I am using iMac, iPhone4s, iPad, iPod - yesterday, all of my past events on iCal, across all devices, were deleted. I am not currently using Time Machine on my iMac, and I need to get these events back - I use them at the end of each month for billing purposes. I did not alter my syncing options on any device or on iCloud -- the events have been there since I started using iCloud, now suddenly, they are all gone (everything prior to yesterday's date). Any help in recovering these items would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time!

About your only option would be to try to recover it from your iCloud backup.  There's a user tip here on how to recover contacts from an iCloud backup: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4841.  Just substitute calendar for contacts and the process would be the same.  The key for this being successful is to disconnect your router from the internet (step 4), allowing you to turn off calendar syncing with iCloud and keep the calendar on your iPhone before it is overwritten by the iCloud calendar.
If you have any other calendars on your Mac be sure to back them up before trying this using File>Export>Export.

  • Ical search won't find events

Just upgraded to a G5-awesome. All calendars seem to have transferred & synced no problem- but today when I tried to search in events & to do's for an event ical came up with with no matches...even when I'm looking at an event with the same title I'm typing in. any suggestions? searches worked fine on my old imac & ibook G3
    thanks
    Carolyn

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I have hijacked another thread but my problem seemed so similar......
Anyway, changing the seach criteria such as events, titles etc has no effect.
What is strange is that the more info put into the search box the greater the spread of possibles.
For instance 'whidbourne' will give a single match. 'Whidbourne close' will include all those entries with close in the title. 3 whidbourne close will include all those with 3 and so on. These hits are listed by date so the most accurate match '3 Whidbourne Close' is lost in a huge list.
Spotlight works the other way. The more info in the seach box the less the matches as one would expect.
Is this normal? If so Is it just me that finds it strange?
OK, If I remember to omit numbers and common words such as Mr, road, close etc it will be workable ...... but why?
Our emac runs Panther with ical synced via .mac with the G5 imac that behaves (to me) strangely and a search in ical will behave as you expect:
'3'.. gives all the possible matches with 3 in them....by the time 3 Whid is typed in the box there is only one match.

  • Daylight savings all-day events issues in updated iCal for iPad

After purchasing new MBP, Genius Bar told me to update to new iCal. I have noticed that any all-day events taking place on the date that daylight savings begins (3/13/11 i.e.) lasts on iPad's iCal for two days. When I attempt to edit, event still displays for two days. Guessing it is because that day technically lasts for only 23 hours. Genius Bar consultant had no suggestions for a remedy. This error appears for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 daylight savings beginning dates. The error doesn't seem to be a problem for the MBP or my iPhone.

I've experienced the same problem.  I set up a recurring one day event on the first of each month - come April 1 in 2012 the event is spread over 2 days (the end of daylight savings time in Australia) from April onwards.  I can muck around with the event and have it set at one day from April1 onwards in 2012 but there's a recurring event bug related to daylight savings.  I wonder if any alarms people have set for that day will again experience the problems from the past?
