Searching in Finder gives no results on Mavericks.  Spotlight is working.

When I try to find something by searching in Finder (I am typing in the find space), nothing comes up at all.  It doesn't matter if I click on a folder or "This Mac", it is all empty.
This problem occurred after downloading Mavericks.  My spotlight is working just fine.  Before I downloaded Mavericks, I used this feature daily.  Now, I can't use it at all.
This is what I am seeing.  Help!

Dear all,
This may sound obvious and rather old fashioned but I too suffered the following problems
1. Search not working in Mail
2. Mail Junk and Trash folders missing
3. Search not working in Finder
I fixed it by........restarting my mac.
Now everything works.
Give it a try.
Fingers crossed,
Cheers.

  • Search in Finder only returns results for "This Mac"

I'm experiencing the following, annoying issue with searching for files in Finder:
When I type a search text in Finder's search field, it only returns results when I select "This Mac". It does not return a single search result when being in any subfolder.
To make this a bit more clear assume the following structure:
    | -– A
    |    | -- B
    |         | -- sample.pdf
    |         | -- another-sample.pdf
    |
    | --- C
    |     | -- yet-another-sample.pdf
    |
    | -- sample.pdf
I use finder to navigate to folder B. I type "sample" into the search bar. No results are returned.
Next I switch to "This Mac" and all of the above .pdf files are – correctly – returned.
The same happens when I'm in any other subfolder. Search only returns results when I switch to "This Mac".
    Notes:
I'm not talking about network drives. All folders are local and below "This Mac" in the file system hierarchy.
I have forced Spotlight to reindex via sudo mdutil -E.
It happens on multiple machines, Snow Leopard upgrades and Lion clean installs.
Any idea? This bug renders Lion almost useful for me.

I had the same problem .... found this link
    http://osxdaily.com/2007/02/15/spotlight-wont-work-fix-a-broken-spotlight-menu-w ith-these-troubleshooting-tips/
And solution 3 the simplest, no wait the wierdest,
Change the screen resoultion then revert!
worked for me ...... go figure.

  • Search in Finder and Mail for files in 2011 not working

I do get search results just not for anything created after December 31st 2010. Nothing exists in the search for 2011. I have updated all software and nothing seems to work. My date and time are correct. I can have a file on the desktop or in my inbox and the system can not find it. I do search every day and it is getting labor intensive to do it all by hand. Any ideas?

I figured out a fix for my machine. I went into the system preferences, to the spotlight. Went to the privacy settings added my drive and closed to save the settings then reopened it and I removed it from Privacy. This caused it to re-indexed all my files (it took over an hour) but I even created new files and was able to find them in spotlight and in my email.

  • ITSM Search on status with "is not" gives incorrect results due to SLA statuses

    Hi,
When executing a search on Solution Manager ITSM tickets, on the search criterion Status and with operator "is not", the result list does not give correct results.
For example, an incident with status "Confirmed IRT Exceeded" does show up when searching with criterion "Status is not Confirmed".
Is there any solution for this behaviour?
    Kind Regards,
    Joyca

    Hi Vivek,
    Thanks for the Knowledge Article.
The content of the document would indeed help if we only wanted to find "not confirmed" tickets.
However, the same thing is happening on other statuses. For example searching for "status is not proposed solution" is still not possible with the descriptions in the knowledge document, since the user status "proposed solution" is linked to system status "in process" (I1003), like all the other in-between user statuses such as "customer action" and "in process" etc.
The only workaround that I see is to use only "is" as operator and never "is not". However, the underlying problem remains. I think it should be possible to use also "is not" without having issues due to those SLA statuses...

  • Custom search using boolean attribute set to True gives no result

I am setting up an auto-query using the custom search portlet. This is to show all items where a boolean custom attribute is checked, ie = True.
In step 3 I have tried to set the operator to Equals to and the default value to True. This gives no results even though several items have this attribute set to True.
The Auto Query check box is checked.

Found that True = 1 in database. When set to this the search works.

    '''browser.search.openintab''' userset boolean True
Also in Google search, upper-right-corner settings
You can always force opening a link into a tab with Ctrl+click or Ctrl+Shift+click
If you want the same from a bookmark make sure to set
: '''browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground''' to same value as you have for
    : '''browser.tabs.loadInBackground'''
The last setting is controlled by Tools > Options > Tabs >
:: When I click on a link, switch to it immediately,
which control the difference between Ctrl+click and Ctrl+Shift+click
Items in boldface''' can be set in about:config

  • Mavericks Spotlight is Horrible -- I have to use my Windows 7 PC to find files that my MacAir with Mavericks cannot find -- what has happened to the famous Mac search feature?  It is almost useless!

Why does Mavericks Spotlight not find files named, for example, Ono et al 2009, PNAS, 106(35), 14745-14750 - annotated when I use Ono as the search word.  I can find the file using the search feature on my Windows 7 PC.  Is there a way to change the perferences in Spotlight so it finds all file names if one searchers on a word in the file name?  When I enter Ono in the Spotlight search box I get OnOff Switch slider, a list of files in which the Ono paper is referenced, and a Ono Yoko!  But it does not find the 6 or so PDF files on the Computer with Ono and the primary author in the file name!  Spotlight is almost useless.

    First try to re-index Spotlight

Glad you seem to have sorted things out.
The warning about the warranty is light hearted, I think at one stage it warned "here be dragons" but also intended to make us think as it warns that making changes may produce problems.

  • Maps can not find my location, or gives incorrect results

when I tap the "locator" icon at the bottom right of Maps, it can't find my location, or gives incorrect results such as San Francisco, or somewhere south of Detroit, MI

This is what I did, and it worked for me. My location was coming up in the correct city, Philadelphia, but at the wrong neighborhood, a couple of miles away. I turned off the wifi, and made the locator find me by Edge only. Then I turned the Wifi back on and had the locator find me again, and it went back to the wrong location, but 2 seconds later found the correct address within a few blocks. I have the Original iPhone BTW.

  • Iphone 5 app store search gives blank result all the time, please advise how to solve?

iphone 5 search in app store always gives blank result all the time, please advise how to solve? It worked several times when I first used the phone from unboxed, but since then, it never work again. Could you please advise how to fix? Thanks

Try reseting (not just turning off) your phone: hold down the Home button and the Power button on the top until the Silver Apple appears (ignore the red slider if it appears). See if the reset clears things up!

  • Calendar search not finding calendar events older than a year.

Calendar search cannot find events older than a year.
    neither does spotlight search.
    iphone 4s 16GB ios version 7.1.2
ipad 32GB with retina (purchased on 2012) ios version 7.1.2
Does anybody has the same issue?
Calendar events over one year old are not found when searched on iOS. Neither on the iPhone nor the iPad. Although they are found on a mac running mavericks calendar app.
All events are displayed when going directly to the month and viewing all the events of each day, but she search feature, the one accessed through the little magnifier, simply cannot find any event older than a year.
I have multiple events in my calendar and I tested them and the last I can find is within 365 days of today. after that events cannot be found.
    steps to reproduce:
    1. go into the calendar app on the iPhone and add an event but use a date date 13 months older than the current date. Save the event.
    2. verify the even is created by looking at the day of the event
    3. on the top right corner of the calendar app select the magnifying glass and try to search the event by typing any word you used on the title of the event just created
    4. search result will display No Results
    5. exit the calendar and access spotlight search on the home screen by using the "pull down" gesture from an area outside of the dock, including the top row of app icons. Type any word you used on the title of the event just created
    6. search result will not display the event
    Thanks

    this has already been answered.
    please ignore my question.

  • I'm a MB Pro beginner (after 25 years with PC). I have an Iomega ext HD, but how do get it indexed. I'm trying searches in Finder, and it says "searching Iomega drive" - but I don't think it's indexing. How do I force it to index?

Well I'm leaning the other way. I think my present MBP will be the last Apple product I buy.
With the way Apple is going, all New Mac computers are sealed unit that don't allow the user to upgrade them in any way. They are getting more expensive initially. They are impossible to fix, even by Apple. All the parts are either soldered to the Logic Board or glued inside the case parts. The add on warranty only covers manufacturing defects and is expensive. And to fix one out of waranty is close to if not more then a new system.
The only thing different in a Mac, and most other products Apple sells, is the operating system and the cases they come in. As for the OS both have their glitches and at this time there are no viruses that infect OS X. There is more software available for Windows. More choices as to what hardware you can use or upgrade to at a later date.
Mac computers are becoming large iPads or iPhones with built in keyboards.

  • How can I search and find all files modified since december 1st 2010

I just want to see all the files that have been modified on my Windows Server 2008 since December 1, 2010.  I want to see if there is anything unusual.  Is this possible without 3rd party software?
I support 2 Windows Server 2008.  On one of them, I can't seem to get any advanced search options until I type at least one character in the name of the file I am searching for (but I want to search all files).  Even then, the search is slow, it
tells me it did not bring back all results because there are too many and the results window is too awkward to navigate.  On the second server, when I click in the search box, it has buttons I can click, one is "Date Modified" but they only have predefined
options like "Last week" and "yesterday".
Every version of windows explorer gets worse and worse at searching.  I rarely use it anymore.  I usually install "Search Everything" from voidtools.com.  You can download, install, index, and search and get your results all more quickly than
finding the results in windows explorer.

    Hi,
It should be caused that Windows Search is not installed on the second server. See following steps to install it:
    1) Start Server Manager
    2) Click on Roles in the left navigation pane
    3) Select Add Role in the Roles Summary pane to the right
    4) Select the File Services role and click Next
    5) Select the Windows Search role service and Finish the wizard.
Meanwhile, when you search for a file such as "data", input keyword data and click the Advanced Search at the bottom to result box. Then you can select "Data and modified" and "is after" December 1, 2010

  • Search not finding certain matches

We have some document control documents that are not showing up when searched for based on certain keywords but are for others....
The document title (as well as name) contain "Program Code1 Code2 Desc".  So for example it might say "11123# ABC U1234 red thing".
The person doing the searching usually wants to get all of the files that relate to the codes.  So they would search for "ABC U1234".  The library has 6 documents that should match, but returns only 2 (Advanced search returns the same
2 results).  However, if for example you search for "ABC U1234 red", the document that didn't show up in the first search now shows up.  So I know the crawler has at least got the documents based on that (the document also have not been
changed in several months, so it isn't like the title just changed and the crawler just hasn't hit it yet).
    These are Excel documents

    Hi spi_shane,
I understand the library has more than 2 documents "titile" and "name" column containing string "11123# ABC U1234 red thing", but search only return 2 of them when search "ABC U1234", but the others
will return whe search "ABC U1234 red", these documents have been crawled and documents change nothing in several months.
For toubleshooting the issue, we can try the following.
    1. Please make a copy of that Excel file with name "11123# ABC U1234 red thing - copy" , and create another new Excel file with name "11123# ABC U1234 red thing - new" from local machine Excel application, then
upload to the library and start an incremental crawl, see if the they could be searched out, then see if the orginal files have something corrupt.
    2. Go to Central Administration site ->Search service applicaiton, crawl log page, find the crawled docuemnt item and selete "Recrawl this item in the next crawl", then start an incremental crawl and test again.
    Thanks

  • Firefox, google chrome, IE8 lose the ability to search and find text on certain archived books. IE7 can search and find. Is there a way to fix this?

Firefox, google chrome, and IE8 all have the same error. The search and find functions for certain on-line archive books does not work on these browsers. They claim that text does not exist. In IE7 the text is found. I can be typing in a word I see on the page and all three still bottom out with this error. Try this with the Scots Dialect Dictionary:http://www.archive.org/stream/cu31924026538813#page/n5/mode/2up
    or
A Glossary of Tudor and Stewart Words ( a google book even) http://books.google.com/books?id=hPhLAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA198&lpg=PA198&dq=tudor+exclamations&source=bl&ots=8DFgw_eH8t&sig=-Mxf2gwq3nZDVLOCn_y06ZBRIfA&hl=en&ei=O-dNTey0H8PdgQf_2cgf&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CDIQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q&f=false
Again the search and find function works with IE7 but not these new browsers. And I would love to upgrade from IE7 but cannot.
Any way to fix this on Firefox?

Works for me on Linux with Firefox 10.0.1
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
