Searching inside PDF Folder

I'm trying to do searched within a Folder containing 100's of PDF Documents for a particular Text. Windows will search but not with a PDF, it will search and return information in for example a Windows.DOC file.  This used to work until >6 months ago.

This link helps too.  You can do an Advanced search for any word in a document within a folder and save the results.

  • Cannot search inside pdf with Windows Explorer

    Win XP SP2
Scanned document that has been paper-captured using Acrobat 8.1.2.
I cannot use Windows Explorer to search for text inside this file.  For example, I search for the word "abstract" (it's a technical paper) which DOES show up when doing a Ctrl-F find inside Acrobat, and I get no results in the search.
To test, I put one and only one file with that word in it in a new directory, then ran a standard search, using 'abstract' (without quotes) in the "A word or phrase in the file:" box.
"Search is complete.  There are no results to display."
Someone tell me why this isn't working?

Since the search issue is coming up regularly, here is what I used some time back that helped me find a file I have lost a year earlier (OK, an organization problem on my part, but it is the question being asked). To search the interior of any file, not just the limited set of MS, follow the following directions (with warning) from Nick on Windows Vista Tips (for XP):
"Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly
by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might
require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee
that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
Network administrators can configure this setting by modifying the registry.
To do this, set the FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions DWORD value to 1 in the
    following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro  l\ContentIndex"

  • Search inside PDFs

    Hello everyone!
I have searched the forums to the answer for my question, but
I cant get a clear solution. I have a client who has us do small
interactive splash screen which we burn to a disc. Usually this
splash screens are one page with links that open PDF. Ok, pretty
simple. A while back they decided they didn't want to rely on the
user having PDF reader (even though it is free). So we got INM
Impressario for Director, and now we can view the PDFs inside
    Director!!!!
Now they asked me if there is a way for the user to search
for information that is inside the individual PDFs...and I come to
    you guys.
Is there a way that a user can search for specific
information inside a PDF. Our splash screen will always be on a CD
(or thumb drive). If the user types a word, can a list of the PDF
containing that information come up as a link which the user can
click and opens the PDF containing the information he searched for?
I am sure it involves an xtra...not sure which one.
    Thanks!!!

I used it and it worked from basic searching. You don;t need
    any
database knowledge to make it work. It is a little touchy
    though, and
    crashed a lot.
I did learn that it can not index a PDF that has NO text in
    it. Some of
the ones that my client had were made from a bitmap per page,
    with no
real text. You would expect that it would find no text and
    simply not
index it, but instead, it would crash hard. You need to open
    the PDF in
Acrobat and make a text field somewhere off the screen where
    it can not
be seen and put some text in it (like the title/author of the
    PDF), then
    it would not crash.
And it will also crash if you are trying to index the PDFs by
    their
metadata, if the metadata has certain characters. For
    example, when you
are typing in Word, and you use quotes, it converts them to
    "curly
quotes". If you copy/paste from Word into the metadata fields
    for
author, title, etc, the indexer will crash. Of course my
    client had
    done just that.
Once the indexer does its thing and actually indexes
    everything, things
went more smoothly. You must index the files before
    distribution, and
you can not add new PDFs or change the existing ones unless
    you re-index
the whole lot. That was a little annoying, but I understand
    why it
would have to be that way.
I also had some trouble with the xtra crashing the projector
    on Mac,
when it was running off non-writable media (like CD). I got
    it to work
eventually, but it took a good bit of cursing and yelling
    like an idiot.
Make sure you test everything as it will be delivered... that
    is the
    take away lesson here.

  • Searching inside PDFs ... maybe even with spotlight?

Does anybody know of an application that lets me archive and search all my paper bound documents?
While there are some applications on Windows (such as ScanSnap) I've not seen anything on the Mac. The workflow I have in mind is to scan a document and then somehow being able to search for words in that document - but with no manual tagging - ideally with spotlight.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for your input so far. I realize that .pdfs are just images, so please let me elaborate.
In more technical terms, what I'm looking for is this:
A utility that scans to .pdf and then runs the document through its OCR engine. It then adds the full text of the .pdf to the file as spotlight comments. This would preserve the original layout and yet make its content searchable without manual tagging.

  • How do I search for a Folder (name) inside a folder?

I am using FF 3.6.3, I an attempting to use FF Search to locate a specific Folder, which I placed inside another Folder.
In this case, I have a Folder entitled 'Health' (no quotes), I research, and have various health-issues placed inside this folder. I am attempting to place new bookmarks within the aforementioned folder, however I only receive the various prior bookmarks, and it seems that 'FF Search' is incapable at this time to inform me as to which folder my previous bookmarks with this particular (specific) Health Issue are located within.
I would also like to take it out of that folder, and perhaps place it in General Bookmarks so that I will not lose track of it again.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

You can install this add-on t0 add a column to the Library window ( Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks ) to indicate which Folders your search items are located:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7372
Once installed, in the Library window, click Views > Show Columns then click Parent Folder to show that column in the search results area.

  • How 2 search inside a PDF document using the firefox internal PDF reader

Cannot find any way to do a text search inside a PDF document when it is displayed by the builtin PDF player in Firefox.
If there is a way, how is it done?
If there isn't a way, it seems an obvious enhancement.

son of a gun. I've always searched in firefox by hitting slash and typing the search term, but that doesn't seem to work in the pdf reader. I guess, if I had searched for key bindings I coulda figured that out for myself.
    thanks!

  • Searching within PDF text

So here is what I have: Currently Bridge can search using the Quick Search and also with the "Find..." command for a more detailed search of metadata information. This is great for searching pictures, editing metadata, and saving searches to collections. However, I also have PDF files that I would like treat exactly the same. Is there any possible way to search the text inside the PDF using Bridge? OR is there another solution, besides Bridge, to manage image and PDF files and their metadata?
Right now, I am working on a mac, so I can utilize the Spotlight feature in OSX to search inside the PDF. Once I conduct that search, I have to move those files to a new independent location, go back to Bridge and edit their metadata (mostly their IPTC Keywords, Location, etc), and then move them back into their original folder. This may seem a little tedious, but unfortunately I wont even have that capability because the intended OS for this work is going to be Windows XP, and I am unaware of XPs PDF searching. I would really like to stay in one program for all of this work. I need something with the searching capability of say X1, and the metadata management like Bridge. Any ideas of what my options are?
    Thanks,
    Peter

I searched the forums prior to this post, but I couldn't seem to find a topic covering the issue I have with the search feature in Preview.
There is a thread on searchable smart typographic shaping. If you don't mind, I should prefer to talk on that thread. The cause of your problem can be anywhere in a monster size bug matrix. It is not very likely that the cause of your problem can be determined, but it can't hurt to try to figure out what you are doing and see if there is some sort of relatively simple reason. There's a person who says there's supposed to be no problem with PDF, perhaps he has some ideas, too.
Since the introduction of Adobe PostScript for the Apple LaserWriter in January 1985, the DTP attitude has been that as long as one could make the mark on the medium, it did not matter how one managed to do that. Type products draw glyphs by incorrect public character specifications and more recently by private 'character' specifications. This is OK for hardcopy, but not for softcopy as searching is by character codes and not by glyph codes. There are also problems with PDF per se.

  • Windows 7 Searching: Inside Files

I cannot find a way to search inside files using Windows 7. How does one go about looking inside files, especially text files or PDFs, for a certain word? For example if I were to look for all files which include the word "facetious" in a folder full of .txt files, how would I look for that?

    Hi,
The quick way is typing “facetious kind:=document” in Start Search bar.
For more information and other way, please refer to the following links:

I can't open a link/URL in a new tab inside a folder from a Mac. I am sure I can do that in PC. Please advice. Thanks in advance.

Does the URL go to a regular web page, or another kind of file (e.g., PDF, PowerPoint)?
If you right-click the link and choose Copy Link Location, then paste to the address bar and press Enter, does Firefox load the link as expected?

  • How do I use search/find to search for a folder name

I can successfully use Spotlight and Search in Finder and Mail to find files and emails based on their titles and contents, but how to I use the search functions to find a FOLDER by its name, that I have somehere in my nests of folders - so I can then look inside that folder for what I am looking for.
The search results never seem to show up any folder names?

I do have several levels of nested email folders and several hundred folders created over the years. So I was hoping to be able to search for a folder's name, and be taken to it to see it and all of its contents.
The best I seem to be able to do is search for a word that I hope I remember is in one of the emails in that folder, and then find that email in the search results list - but that list still doesn't tell me where the folder in the nested heirarchy that is my mailbox

Never mind, I already found the solution myself.
    What I did wrong was:
    - not copying the master image to the nbi folder
    - selecting the netinstall-restore.dmg image as source to copy to my HD.
The thing is, when you create a netinstall image for 10.5, the image itself is already included in the netinstall image so you don't have to do anything else.
With the 10.4 image however, you also have to copy the master image to the NetBootSP0 directory.
In the *.nbi folder contains an netinstall-restore.dmg file. But that is only to boot you to netrestore, it's not the image itself.
Other alternative is to copy the images to another folder that you share with AFP and adjust the configuration of netrestore like described in this manual:
    http://www.shellharbourd.det.nsw.edu.au/pdf/misc/osxrestoringnet.pdf
This manual was also how I figured out that I forgot to copy the image to the NetBootSP0 folder.

  • How to disable spotlight searches inside packages

    Hi,
I tagged all my files inside my document folder, now I'd like to create and save a smart folder searching for all the untagged files, just in case I create or move a file to that folder without tagging it first.
The problem is that I have several files, which are packages with other files in them (created with Scrivener, Devonthink, OmniOutliner...). These other files aren't tagged (and I don't need nor want to tag them) so they are showed in my spotlight search.
I can't exclude the folders containing these files in spotlight preference, since there are a lot of them and I often create new files of these kinds.
I would like to tell spotlight not to search inside packages. Is that possible?
    thanks in advance,
    pietro

You can't remove it so as it is fixed in the OS of the phone.

  • Bug - Safari 5.1.5 breaks the keyword search of PDF files displayed on Safari

Bug - Safari 5.1.5 breaks the keyword search of PDF files displayed on Safari.
After updating to Safari 5.1.5 with Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.3 on Mac OS X 10.6.8, it is not possible to search for keywords in PDF documents displayed on Safari.
I understand that it is a bug. Is there any way to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Hi...
    Try deleting a plugin...
Open the Finder. From the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Typs this:    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin  (or PDF Browser plugin) to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, back to the Finder menu.
    Go > Go to Folder
    Type this:  ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safarfi/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Searching large PDF files

I have really really big PDF's (over 600mb)
I submit 10,000 paper  documents to a service company  they churn out 1 gigantic PDF
each original document is a page so there are over 10,000 pages in the PDF document
they provide me  CD with the file on it
this file gets copied out onto a shared network drive
So I go to the drive and select the file ( I am not absoulty sure the undercover detials such as when  you access a file that is located out on a shared drive.....does the entire file get loaded in my PC's ram?  or is it somehow loaded segment by segment? )
anyhow I then use FIND  to put a search string in and  it ca ntale over 30 min  to search the file
anyone have suggestion that I can use to re-engineer this process in order f to be able to search quickly ??
    thanks
    [email address deleted by host]

There is no way for you to do this in Reader. HOWEVER, if you are going to ask the company to produce the file you can ask them to embed an index so that searching (rather than finding) can be done more quickly.
BTW, the an index file could be created for searching an entire folder of files without the files being combined. The creation of such indices is one of the features of Acrobat. Loading large files unnecessarily is resource and time consuming without being necessary.
