Searching inside PDFs ... maybe even with spotlight?

Does anybody know of an application that lets me archive and search all my paper bound documents?
While there are some applications on Windows (such as ScanSnap) I've not seen anything on the Mac. The workflow I have in mind is to scan a document and then somehow being able to search for words in that document - but with no manual tagging - ideally with spotlight.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for your input so far. I realize that .pdfs are just images, so please let me elaborate.
In more technical terms, what I'm looking for is this:
A utility that scans to .pdf and then runs the document through its OCR engine. It then adds the full text of the .pdf to the file as spotlight comments. This would preserve the original layout and yet make its content searchable without manual tagging.

  • Cannot search inside pdf with Windows Explorer

    Win XP SP2
Scanned document that has been paper-captured using Acrobat 8.1.2.
I cannot use Windows Explorer to search for text inside this file.  For example, I search for the word "abstract" (it's a technical paper) which DOES show up when doing a Ctrl-F find inside Acrobat, and I get no results in the search.
To test, I put one and only one file with that word in it in a new directory, then ran a standard search, using 'abstract' (without quotes) in the "A word or phrase in the file:" box.
"Search is complete.  There are no results to display."
Someone tell me why this isn't working?

Since the search issue is coming up regularly, here is what I used some time back that helped me find a file I have lost a year earlier (OK, an organization problem on my part, but it is the question being asked). To search the interior of any file, not just the limited set of MS, follow the following directions (with warning) from Nick on Windows Vista Tips (for XP):
"Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly
by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might
require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee
that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
Network administrators can configure this setting by modifying the registry.
To do this, set the FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions DWORD value to 1 in the
    following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro  l\ContentIndex"

  • Search inside PDFs

    Hello everyone!
I have searched the forums to the answer for my question, but
I cant get a clear solution. I have a client who has us do small
interactive splash screen which we burn to a disc. Usually this
splash screens are one page with links that open PDF. Ok, pretty
simple. A while back they decided they didn't want to rely on the
user having PDF reader (even though it is free). So we got INM
Impressario for Director, and now we can view the PDFs inside
    Director!!!!
Now they asked me if there is a way for the user to search
for information that is inside the individual PDFs...and I come to
    you guys.
Is there a way that a user can search for specific
information inside a PDF. Our splash screen will always be on a CD
(or thumb drive). If the user types a word, can a list of the PDF
containing that information come up as a link which the user can
click and opens the PDF containing the information he searched for?
I am sure it involves an xtra...not sure which one.
    Thanks!!!

I used it and it worked from basic searching. You don;t need
    any
database knowledge to make it work. It is a little touchy
    though, and
    crashed a lot.
I did learn that it can not index a PDF that has NO text in
    it. Some of
the ones that my client had were made from a bitmap per page,
    with no
real text. You would expect that it would find no text and
    simply not
index it, but instead, it would crash hard. You need to open
    the PDF in
Acrobat and make a text field somewhere off the screen where
    it can not
be seen and put some text in it (like the title/author of the
    PDF), then
    it would not crash.
And it will also crash if you are trying to index the PDFs by
    their
metadata, if the metadata has certain characters. For
    example, when you
are typing in Word, and you use quotes, it converts them to
    "curly
quotes". If you copy/paste from Word into the metadata fields
    for
author, title, etc, the indexer will crash. Of course my
    client had
    done just that.
Once the indexer does its thing and actually indexes
    everything, things
went more smoothly. You must index the files before
    distribution, and
you can not add new PDFs or change the existing ones unless
    you re-index
the whole lot. That was a little annoying, but I understand
    why it
would have to be that way.
I also had some trouble with the xtra crashing the projector
    on Mac,
when it was running off non-writable media (like CD). I got
    it to work
eventually, but it took a good bit of cursing and yelling
    like an idiot.
Make sure you test everything as it will be delivered... that
    is the
    take away lesson here.

  • How do I search for just a folder with Spotlight

How do I search for a folder with Spotlight, not a file?  Spotlight is a great tool for finding a file, but often I just want to locat a folder.
When I find a file, how to I see the path to this file?
These are probably obvious question for longtime Mac users, but I come from the Windows world.

Activate the Finder's window. Put the folder name in the search field in the Finder's toolbar. Enter COMMAND-F which should change the Finder's window and give a toolbar above the column headers:
If you click on the dropdown menu with "Any" you will see this:
    Select the "Folder" entry.

  • Searching inside PDF Folder

I'm trying to do searched within a Folder containing 100's of PDF Documents for a particular Text. Windows will search but not with a PDF, it will search and return information in for example a Windows.DOC file.  This used to work until >6 months ago.

This link helps too.  You can do an Advanced search for any word in a document within a folder and save the results.

  • How can I allow visitors to my website to search within pdf documents created with Acrobat?

I honestly had no idea where to place this question. If I should move it to another forum area please just let me know. I have about 200-300 pdf documents on my website and people are able to search by the title of the file but not for items in the body of the document. Is there a way that is possible?

Are the documents encrypted? If they are not, the common search engines (Google, etc) will normally index all the text in a PDF, the same as if it was a regular Web page. They don't index non-text media within a PDF (images, attachments, etc.) nor will they handle PDF Portfolios.

  • Strange behaviour on searching Chinese word (maybe related with word breaker?)

    Dear all,
On my SP2013 environment, I have installed Chinese (traditional) language pack and I am able to search out Chinese document after crawling. However most of the time I cannot search out document with "single" word or "sentence".
I have to search using "term".
For example, our test document contains a sentence "中國語文".  I can search out this document with "中國" or "語文" or "中國(space)語文".  But I cannot search it out with any other combination like "中", "文",
    or "中國語文".
I think it is related with Traditional Chinese specific word breaker but it would be a huge effort for me write a custom one.  (ref:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms693186(v=vs.85).aspx) However, can I just disable word breaker (so that there is no "term" or "sentence" concept for
    Chinese crawling & searching?)
    Thanks.
P.S.  I have looked around and found an article (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlfts/archive/2010/09/03/part1-sql-full-text-search-and-international-characters-interesting-scenarios-solutions-amp-deep-dive-using-dmv-s.aspx)
talking about similar issue on SQL2008.
    Mark

I have tried to disable the word breaker for both Traditional and Simplied Chinese following this article:
    http://sharepointknowledgebase.blogspot.hk/2012/08/need-to-disable-word-breaker- in.html
After restart the search services and running a full-crawl, the behaviour do changed a little bit but still far from expected.  Searching single Chinese word (e.g. 語) sometimes work and sometimes not work.

  • Advanced Search (Ctrl+Shift+F) broken with Protected View = All Files Adobe Customization Wizard XI

I've updated Adobe Reader to version 11.0.09 and it was discovered that the Advanced Search (Ctrl+Shift+F) reports back errors on all words searched inside PDF document/
    Reproduce:
    1. Use Adobe Customization Wizard XI
    2. Create a MST file for the Base Adobe Reader 11.0.0 MSI (AdbeRdr11000_en_US.msi)
    3. Under Security -> Protected View -> (Set to ALL FILES)
    4. Save MST file
    5. Install Adobe Reader XI using created MST File and then Install AdbeRdrUpd11009.msp
    6. Open any PDF document and search for words using advanced search: (Ctrl+Shift+F) All searches return errors unable to display search.
The error can be reproduced and only occurs on Adobe Reader 11.0.09. None of the previous patches of Adobe had this issue.
The fix actually requires to remove and re-install Adobe Reader but with Protected View=OFF
Please can you confirm bug and report any solution or workaround so that Advanced Search works with Reader 11.0.09?
    Thanks

    Hi vmartin01,
I tried to check at my end and it works fine at my end.

Once again, my thanks for your assistance. If I may impose on your generosity one more time, if I understand you correctly if I create a document on Word or WordPerfect, print it and scan it to create a pdf, the search function will not work. But, if I create the pdf document in Word the search function will work. Unfortunately, I am not sure how I create a pdf document in Word other than by printing it and scanning it. Could you please explain.

  • Search Inside Catalogs With Spotlight on Mac

My wife is a pro-photographer and a Lightroom user; I'm tech support. We like to use small catalogs because they are easier to manage. The problem that arises is files become lost amongst the many catalogs with no way to search across catalogs for a given photo. To remedy the situation, I wrote a Spotlight importer that allows the Mac to index filenames inside LR catalogs. Here is a quick screenshot of me searching for the filename "HPDE" and Spotlight locating the catalog referencing this filename.
I packaged up the Importer for install. You can read the technical details in my blog post or jump right to the download package. If you have any questions, feel free to follow up here, however I'd prefer that you add a comment to the blog post. Thanks!

  • Search inside Coldfusion files with Spotlight?

I've recently found to my dismay that you cannot search inside .cfm files with Spotlight, and there appears to be no easy way to tell Spotlight to start looking in those files. I would assume that since they're just text files, and Spotlight does seem to search inside .htm files, that it shouldn't be too difficult to get Spotlight to do this, but I'm at a loss as to going about it.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?
    Thanks.

For Spotlight to index content there has to be an mdimporter for that content type. If the files are in fact plain text, it is possible to do a bit of hacking to get them indexed, see this discussion at MacOSXHints:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050514182520714&query=mdimport
Be sure to read the comments! And don't do it without a current clone of your system on an external drive that is NOT attached when you try this out (if you do try it).

  • Spotlight text search inside iWork 08

A quick test finds that Spotlight does not find text inside a Pages document. Whereas it will find text inside many other formats, including PDF files.
Is this really the case? Or maybe it's just my machine?
Similarly, Spotlight used to be able to find text inside MS Word documents on my machine. That functionality subsequently disappeared.
So what is the score with Spotlight & iWork08?
    Go well!

  • Problems with Spotlight searching of shared volumes

According to: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#spotlight, I should be able to "...search any connected Mac with Personal File Sharing enabled or a file server that’s sharing its files."
It doesn't specify what "file server", so I presume it means Spotlight should be able to search any mounted shared volume (assuming, of course, that indexing has been enabled).
I have a NAS device that I want to be able to search with Spotlight. According to mdutil, the volume is enabled for indexing, but I don't see any results when I search under "Shared" in Finder via Cmd+F. (I checked, and there's no .Spotlight folders on the volume.)
From what I recall, under Tiger you could manually specify a network volume to index, but if you dismounted the volume, you'd have to re-enable indexing on next mount. This worked for other file systems (such as Fat32 & NTFS), as well as for HFS+ drives.
According to mdutil in Leopard, the volume is still enabled for indexing even across dismounts. The NAS drive is not HFS+ formatted, but uses XFS.
I've tried deleting the index, to no avail.
Has anyone successfully used Spotlight to search mounted volumes on volumes not shared via another Mac?
    Am I missing something?

You have not missed anything.... Leopard promises but does NOT deliver.
I use an AFP server with Bonjour enabled. And NO NO NO Spotlight search is possible on this network volume...
This is outrageous and FALSE information....
Oh and - that Leopard is Sporting 300 new features is false info too.... Not even the "What is New in Leopard" says anything about 300 features.. But it sounds great doesn't it....
