Searching iPhoto

When I create a search on my imac (Mountain Lion) for a named photograph - it is not looking inside iPhoto! Tried Spotlight preferences and sharing is on in iPhoto - am at a stand still...Please help!

Thanks for reply Terence...Normally I just use the CMD F function to do a search - but this wasn't finding anything in iPhoto! So got desperste...Spotlight found some but ONLY the iPhoto master files (not the edited version of the photo/thumbnails) and only 80% in the iphoto library - random! I have recently copied the library over from my macbook to my imac - will this be anything to do with the problems? The search in iphoto is working though - thank you . Really appreciate the help.

  • Searching iPhoto clips  using iPhoto keywords within iMovie ('09)??

Just returned to Apple after a 30 years (yes, 30 years) absence with a lovely refurb iMac.
Main problem now is moving over and categorizing my library of photos and video clips taken with my Canon g9 . iPhoto has got the photo end covered nicely, now that I figured out how to use Bibble to process the raw images.
But videos is another matter. I really do like the way iPhoto uploads and categorizes my videos out of the box, and adding in the same keywords as my pictures makes it a winner for me. BUT, I noticed when looking at the iPhoto clips from within iMovie, the keywords assigned to the clips from within iPhoto are not accessible from within iMovie. Yes, iMovie has its own keywords, but geez must I really go through ALL those clips and re-keyword (new verb ?) them all after already doing it within iPhoto at import ?? AIUI, the keywords are saved in XML files in iPhoto. Isn't there a plugin or something available for iMovie that would allow it to search iPhoto clips using the iPhoto assigned keywords ? it seemed a no-brainer to me, given that these programs are designed to work together at some level, but apparently not. Or am I missing something ?
iMovie has not impressed me as a stand-alone cataloguing program, so I've looked into iDive, Footrack, etc, but those are not accessible from Front Row, whereas there is a little tool that makes clips in iPhoto visible from FR (called Purre).
A compromise might be necessary, but first I want to be sure that what I am suggsting cannot be done.
your collective wisdom will be much appreciated
    -bun

It might be worth it to you to keyword in iMovie. It is very different from iPhoto. For example, if you have a 30 minute movie in an Event, and you have 2 minutes of your child as part of the movie, you can keyword those two minutes and go instantly to those frames. In iPhoto, you could put a keyword that your child is in the video, but you would only know that it is somewhere in the 30 minutes and you would have to search for it.
See [this video tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#mark] for how to do simple marking of your video.

  • Searching iPhoto Photo Info

I can't get Spotlight to find photo info - specifically "metering mode." If I create a new smart folder and then select "other" at the bottom of the "Kind" button I can pick "Metering mode" from the list.
So I end up with this search: metering mode is spot (or pattern, multispot, etc.) I can't get any hits at all. I've looked at the info for certain photos so I know I have photos shot with spot metering but spotlight will not find them.
I get results when I use this method to search for iso speed but can't get the metering mode search to work. Any ideas?

    Brad,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I believe your camera takes digital photos at 5 MP (megapixels), not MB (megabytes). If the pixel info is correct, and when you multiply width by height you get about 5 million, then everything is fine. When I set my camera to the least amount of compression my 7.1 megapixel images range in size from 2.6 MB to 3.2 MB. Previously when I used slightly more compression in the camera, my images were sized from 1.4 MB to 2.5 MB. I think your numbers sound reasonable. Check your camera settings to see that you are using the "finest" compression setting it offers.
iPhoto does not compress your photos. One of its core philosophies is to preserve the image in the same condition as when you imported it.
How you archive your photos depends on how you wish to use the archive. If you want to preserve the iPhoto metadata, then use Share> Burn from inside iPhoto to save a version that can be read by iPhoto. If all you want archived is a list of image files, to be used on any computer, (no iPhoto metadata) then you select your pictures and Export to a desktop folder, which you then burn in the Finder. You will have options in the export dialog; you can have the full-sized images or downsize them during the export process.

  • Spotlight doesn't search iPhoto for included data, such as titles!!!

This is a complaint I had about iPhoto 6 too. If you use spotlight and type in a word, spotlight will NOT return any pictures from iPhoto. It does not mine the iPhoto data such as photo titles, descriptions, film roll or event titles or keywords. It only looks at the file name brought in when it was first imported into iPhoto.
Any ideas on why the guys at Apple can't figure out how to get to the data in their own programs? This problem has continued to exist for too long.

Lots of times I need to find a photo within Finder, like when uploading to a blog and such.
Of course, that's not supported, you know. And part of not supporting it is that the OS doesn't help you do it.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS

  • Why is Pages 5.2 crashing when I search iPhoto?

Previously I have had a lot of trouble with Pages 5.1 "hanging" when I attempted to close a file.  Now with the update, I have experimented with the new search feature in the media browser and before I hardly get a word typed in the search window, the whole program crashes!  I am trying really hard to be patient here but I have never had so much difficulty with an Apple product.  I'm not even talking about functionality.  That I can deal with.  But hangs and crashes almost every time, across multiple computers...Apple please help me out!  2099 MBP 8 G RAM, 256G OWC SSD and 2012 27" iMac i5 8G RAM 1 Terra HD running Mavericks of course.  Would it do any good to uninstall my version of Pages and try to dowload another copy from the App Store?

When Lr starts behaving oddly it's always worth checking whether the issue is due to a corrupt preference file. So, try trashing the old preference file. This linked article provides details on where it can be found Preference and other file locations in Lightroom 5

  • Iphoto 09 open event from picture after search

ok so if I search iphoto 09 by a particular word and find a picture, I can sometimes see the picture is part of an event that has other pictures, but how do I show the whole event?  Drives me mad eg If I search for 'tv' I can get a picture (see link below) & see there are 60 other pictures in the folder. However if I right click I can't see any suitable choice to open the entire event. If I double click the event or picture it does nothing if I'm in the situation I show below. (The preferences are set that double click would open event it says). The double-click does open the event if I am looking overall at all the events (ie haven't searched by keyword).  I don't have 'show event' as an option when right clicking either (I keep seeing references to this when googling)
eg I click on 'Events' top left (so all events are visible on the main screen) then search for 'tv' in the search box, it displays as above eg I can see there are 60 pictures within that event, yet if I right-click there is no 'Show Event' option. Show event is not even a greyed out option.

    Hello mook,
    So if I understand:
1.) The goal is to restore the iPhoto Library from a point before the issues started happening
2.) When you try to go backwards in Time Machine while inside the iPhoto window you get a blank Library when you get to the date range you want.
    What to do:
    - As you cannot seem to access the iPhoto contents using the iPhoto window I would suggest the following:
1.) Navigate using the Finder to ~/Pictures (or whatever folder you are currently housing your iPhoto Library in)
2.) Rename the current iPhoto Library to something else (Like iPhoto Library Old etc)
3.) While looking at this Pictures window, activate Time Machine and go back in time to a date when YOU ARE SURE iPhoto was working fine and had the images you want
4.) Click on the iPhoto Library in the Time Machine window and click on Restore
-- This will restore the Library from the date in question
-- You will have 2 libraries once the restore is complete. The freshly restored library and the old library. Keep the old library just for safe keeping until such time as you determine you have all the pictures you want. Then you can do whatever you want with it (trash it, etc)
    Hope that helps.

  • Video storage for all videos: In iPhoto? In iTunes? In iMovie? Or...?

I want a simple solution to gain acces to all my videos on Apple TV
I want to have all my videos in ONE PLACE!!! Right now they are scattered all over my system. I don´t want to search iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes and different folders every time I want to play my different video files and movies on... let´s say Apple TV. Why can´t we have ONE deticated unified "storage and play back" solution for all our video files on Mac OSX? Or at least a front-end that showcases ALL your videos and that is enabled to fetch ANY of those videos for directly playback right there.
I do understand the need for different input solutions/apps for videos such as iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, Aperture. BUT after processing (or what ever you do with your videos) in those Apps, it would be great to be able to transfer... or keep a grand overwiev of all your videos and movies... in ONE place!
Right now I have video file duplicates all over the place because I want to acces videos easily on my Apple TV and from what ever of the following apps I have open... iTunes - iPhoto - iMovie- (Vimeo) - (Youtube).
I can acces all of my music in ONE place in iTunes. I want a simular "ONE place solution" for my... holiday videos... my downloaded videos... my production videos (iMove etc.) etc. etc.
My question for now is: As we don´t have a proper solution for this yet, then what is at the present, the best and most simple solution to gain acces to my many different videos via Apple TV? I would like to avoid a media server and keep the files on my Mac.

If you want to play them on AppleTV, they need to be in iTunes - simplest way to do this from iMovie is using Share to menu and adding to iTunes.

  • Managing iphoto keywords

I currently have two iphoto libraries (one was transferred from iview) with some overlap of pictures and some overlap of keywords. I'd like to combine them to one library, eliminate the duplication of photos, and keep all keywords from both libraries with elimation of duplicated keywords. I also want all the keywords to be searchable in spotlight and not just in iphoto. Im not sure this is possible.. and I'm considering using adobe bridge in place of iphoto.
    1. Is there an automated way to combine the libraries and eliminate duplications in photos and keywords?
    2. Is there a way to search iphoto keywords in spotlight (not just in iphoto). Would there be an advantage to use adobe bridge for this? If I use adobe bridge is there a way share the keywords?
    3. Are their 3rd party applications currently available that will help or should I keep my fingers crossed that a future version of photo7 will come out and help me manage keywords?
    thanks!

Oh no,  You should be able to edit them there. It sounds like there may be some damage to the library. First try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can edit the keywords in the Info tray  as  expected then your current library is damaged.  Post back if that's the case.
If you can't edit them in the new library you may have to reinstall iPhoto. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally.

  • How can I remove all photos and directories from iPhoto?

How can I remove all photos and directories from iPhoto as if it was a brand new install?
I am new to iPhoto and was unaware of how it works, honestly I still am a little confused as to when pics I am using 1/2 the time, some from iPhoto and some from MyPics.
Anyhow, I am looking to remove all photos from iPhoto because during the migration of all my photos from PC to MAC, somehow my timeline became messed up and all my photos that have been logged my dates since 1998 are now all messed up.
Although all my year folders are still in tact, IE 1998-2006, the subfolders and like pics are all intertwined somehow.
And when I search iPhoto for a given year, photos from 2,4, 8 yrs back show up in 2006.
Anyhow, I have selected and deleted all photos and folders within iPhoto, and then import the desired photos from MyPics, only to have the photos double up in the library. ( The old ones that should be deleted and the new imports)
I simply don't get it, they fill the trash and disappear when it's emptied, then reappear when iPhoto re-opens!
    Can someone help????
I have completely reworked all my photos so that they are all in the correct folders outside of iPhoto, and now I want to import those and only those pics with that file structure.
    IE Structure = YEAR > MONTH > DAY ( or if needed) > DAY/EVENT

Do you want to remove the existing full sized image files also? If so then just drag the iPhoto Library folder from the Pictures folder to the Trash and empty it. But be warned you'll lose all of your image files.
You are dragging the files to the iPhoto Trash bin and then using the iPhoto->Empty Trash menu, right?
In copying your photos to myspace and then back the original capture date may not be retained and then either the created date or modified date will be used by iPhoto. If the files in the current library are the originals from your camera then those have the best chance of retaining the correct Captured Date. You can check that out by dragging the Originals folder from your iPhoto Library folder to the desktop and then trash what remains of the iPhoto Library folder. Then launch iPhoto and it will ask you to create an new library. Then import that Originals folder and it's subfolders by dragging it into iPhoto's open window. You'll keep the same rolls that was. The roll dates may change but you can check the captured date of the files by using the calendar in the Source pane.
You won't be able to keep your folder structure within iPhoto. Each outside folder will result in a roll with the same title as the folder. You'll be able to create folders in the Source pane to put albums inside. You can create a smart album to include all photos in a certain date range, line one month.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Lost videos in iPhoto during transfer when computer crashed??

I was transferring videos from my iphone 4s to my Powerbook G4 and by default it transfers to my iPhoto account. A prompt came up that the photos (and videos) were transferred sucessfully and asked me if I wanted to keep or delete the photos from my phone. I chose to delete the photos from my phone to make room. In the process of deleting the data from my phone, the computer crashed. When I opened iphoto again the vidoes and pictures that I thought were successfully transfered were no longer there. Please tell me that there is a way to recover this imformation, because it is no longer showing up on my phone and I've checked the trash in iPhoto and on my Mac and nothing is there. I've searched and searched iPhoto and it's definitely not there. This was footage just recorded and no backup on the phone or the computer was recently backed up. Please help.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto opens?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Importing from camera into a smaller Iphoto file

I am using my photos for very workaday tasks right now and I don't need huge 2.0 mb .jpg photo files. All I need is, like, a 50kb. But since IPhoto is the application in my computer that grabs onto the CF card and immediately starts downloading the card (and I would like to learn how to change that too), the photos are "born" so to speak first in IPhoto in these huge file sizes -- 2 mb and so forth.
I don't need .jpg files this big, so I then have to drag the photos out, open my Adobe PhotoElements software and resize them. Can I skip these steps? Like maybe Adobe PhotoElements could import the files in the first place, or maybe IPhoto could simply import them in a smaller size, or maybe there is a way to resize them in IPhoto.
I swear I have searched IPhoto Help but found no answers!
    Thank you in advance!!

    Stephanie
the photos are "born" so to speak first in IPhoto in these huge file sizes -- 2 mb and so forth.
No, they are "born" on your Camera at these sizes. If you want smaller files, set your camera to take at a lower quality. (For details on this, search on your Camera's Manual.
However, bear in mind that 50kb files are no more than thumbnails and will print at not much bigger than a postage stamp. And at that the quality will be very poor. Frankly, if you want images of such poor quality you have probably spent far too much money on your camera.
iPhoto-> Preferences -> General : Connecting Camera opens: Make your selection from the Drop Down menu.
so I then have to drag the photos out, open my Adobe PhotoElements software and resize them.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
You can resize pics on export from iPhoto using the File -> Export command.

  • IPhoto in screensaver

I notice that iPhoto is loading it's entire library in the System Preferences, screensaver's list. I do not want them there but can't find a way to remove them! The "-" delete button does not highlite for this and I cant find these iPhoto files in the system to delete them manually. Also searched iPhoto preferences but found no answers.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Creating a new library did the job, well sort of!
    Also downloaded Library Manager.
After choosing the empty Library then opening SysPrefs the original iPhoto library containing all my photos still appears but not the accompanying folders: Events, Last Import, Most recent, flagged etc. and others.
This just reduces everything to a few folders.
Listed in the sidebar now are the following folders: iPhoto(with all photos), Flagged, and Last Twelve Months(All photos again).
In using Library Manager I thought it would open the second (empty) Library in SysPrefs but it doesn't!
Well, unless you have a workaround for that, I am happy with this solution.
I want to thank you again as I wouldn't have gotten this far without your help!

  • Saving all iphoto libraries to external harddrive

    Hi,
I have been using iphoto for a couple of years now and find it good but it slows down my computer alot. I would like to save all the pictures/libraries to an external harddrive, but need to know how to do this - i have searched iphoto help but cannot find anything. We have over 10,000 photographs and lots more added each day (on average 300+). Thanks to all in advance.
    Hannah. x x

will it matter if the external harddrive is formated to ms-dos (fat32)?
Yes. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
if so, is there a way through disk utility to partition and re-format external HD without losing previous stored information?
I've no idea. I would post that one on the Using Mac OS X forum for your version of the OS.

  • Panasonic LX5 RAW not importing into iPhoto 09

I cannot import RAW photos taken with my Panasonic LX5. I assume that they are not supported yet. If i upgrade to iPhoto '11, will it support panasonic LX5 RAW?
When I search iPhoto help to see what camera's RAW files are compatible with iPhoto, I am redirected to Aperture 3's RAW compatibility listing. The help page says that the compatibility is the same for both Aperture and iPhoto and that listing says that Panasonic's LX5 is supported; however, there is a footnote that says Aperture 3 is required. Based on the fact that my RAW files won't open in iPhoto 09, it seems that the compatibility is not the same for iPhoto and Aperture.
I would much rather continue using iPhoto; so before I upgrade to iPhoto 11 or purchase Aperture 3, I would like to get a straight answer about iPhoto 11 supporting LX5's RAW.

It can't be done anywhere if you shoot Raw.
The workflow in your camera is as follows
Step 1: Take the shot -  this creates the Raw. The Raw is the data from the camera sensor and by definition this has no processing done on it.
Step 2: Process the Raw using the settings you have chosen and save it. That's saved as a Jpeg.
The Raw is what happens before processing. After processing it's not a Raw anymore.
The point of shooting Raw is that you decide what - and how - the effects are applied to the data, not the Camera. If you want the camera to do it, why are you shooting Raw?

  • How do I clean up my IPhoto Library?

I have over 100,000 photos in my IPhoto Library and with Faces it is totally un manageble. I have perhaps 20% duplicates that I would like to clean up. I have about 325 different faces recognized.
Now my IPhoto seems to be in a permanent loop. Not sure exactly how to start to clean up this mess. I have been using a Mac for about a year and am still not very conversant with Apple vocabulary.
Love the tools available on the mac, but need to learn to use it appropriately. Have installed Aperature, but it is so slow that I almost never use it. Now IPhoto is getting to be the same.
Somehow I need to start over and either divide up my photos into different libraries by time or something to make them manageable.
    Please help me!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can search iPhoto for duplicates using Duplicate Annihilator
You can use iPhoto Library Manager to split a large library into smaller ones. Note at this time there is no way to move faces and places data. However the next version of iPhoto Library Manager (currently in beta) will have this ability. It might be worth waiting a few days.
Noting your comment on the speed of Aperture as well: the largest impact on speed comes from too little RAM and too little HD space. How much of each do you have? Particularly how much Free Space on the HD.
