Searching Leopard Mail content with Spotlight BROKEN

I've read plenty of problems with this but I've not discovered any solutions. I desperately need to get my search content of mail back online as this has been a very important tool for me. I have thousands of emails that I access regularly using this feature, and at one time I thought that haaving them backed up was my main concern. I never imagined that this VITAL tool would break after installing Leopard, which is wonderful and which I love very much. Has anyone heard of a quick fix yet for this problem? I need this fixed today, ... thank you for any help.
David

My solutions thus far to bypass my broken Spotlight issue has been to copy my old Sent Mail folders which were not being recognized by spotlight (and which were several gigs in size) into a special mail folder at my main hard drive level. Then I told Spotlight preferences to ignore the folder. Then I un-excluded it from the Spotlight list (something I had done before inside the Library to no avail). And, wa-la, the email content in those folders was being searched. It is not the best situation, as I would like to use the Spotlight function INSIDE mail. But for now, it helps me get by. Don't know if that helps anyone ...
I do notice my Mail Spotlight is paying attention to all new mail since upgrading to Leopard. It's the old mail that is being ignored, sadly.

  • Search inside Coldfusion files with Spotlight?

I've recently found to my dismay that you cannot search inside .cfm files with Spotlight, and there appears to be no easy way to tell Spotlight to start looking in those files. I would assume that since they're just text files, and Spotlight does seem to search inside .htm files, that it shouldn't be too difficult to get Spotlight to do this, but I'm at a loss as to going about it.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?
    Thanks.

For Spotlight to index content there has to be an mdimporter for that content type. If the files are in fact plain text, it is possible to do a bit of hacking to get them indexed, see this discussion at MacOSXHints:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050514182520714&query=mdimport
Be sure to read the comments! And don't do it without a current clone of your system on an external drive that is NOT attached when you try this out (if you do try it).

    hi there,
after the 10.5.5 update it is not possible to search entire mail content anymore. only "From" "To" and "Subject". i want to reindexing spotlight for a managed client, "mdutil -E /" does this only locally, not for the managed user.

  • How do I search for just a folder with Spotlight

How do I search for a folder with Spotlight, not a file?  Spotlight is a great tool for finding a file, but often I just want to locat a folder.
When I find a file, how to I see the path to this file?
These are probably obvious question for longtime Mac users, but I come from the Windows world.

Activate the Finder's window. Put the folder name in the search field in the Finder's toolbar. Enter COMMAND-F which should change the Finder's window and give a toolbar above the column headers:
If you click on the dropdown menu with "Any" you will see this:
    Select the "Folder" entry.

  • OS X 10.8.3 Mail Quits with launchd Exited abnormally: Broken pipe: 13

    Hello,
I'm using OS X Mail in Mountain Lion and it keeps quitting in the middle of me typing.  The "Broken Pipe" error message I'm seeing in console is listed below.  I have 3 accounts created in Mail:  Exchange Account for Work, iCloud (IMAP) and Yahoo! (IMAP).  I didn't have issues until I started using the Exchange account for work.
Anyone have any ideas for how to resolve this issue?
    Thanks!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Searching work servers with Spotlight

Having issues with Spotlight, it seems to be working fine locally but cannot retrieve the files and folders required from any servers that we have in our office, which is frustrating when looking for older files on our Archive etc...
Is there a preference that I need to click on to allow this?
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks.
    G5 Apple Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

First of all, Tiger's Spotlight technology is not intended for Window servers. (See below)
    Spotlight Support for Network Homes
"Perform a Spotlight search on network-based Home directories in addition to searching local hard drives."
Leopard will expand to search on servers running Mac OS X Leopard Server. http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/spotlight.html
"The Spotlight store retains information that the plug-ins extract in two separate indexes: one for metadata and the other for content. This provides important performance benefits, because Spotlight doesn’t waste time looking through its massive content index unless specifically requested. Each index is created on a per-volume basis, which means each disk or partition carries its own set of indexes for the information on that volume.
Spotlight works with most locally mounted volumes that can be read and written to, including FireWire and USB/ flash drives. Some volumes, such as Windows-formatted drives, are not indexed automatically. You can change this easily by opening the Info window for the volume in the Finder." http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/MacOSXSpotlightTB.pdf
For sure if you are searching network drives, use Command-f and make sure that the drive (volume) you are searching in is shared (connected) and selected. Keep in mind that the volume you are searching in may not be indexible, e.g., CDs, but can be searched using the (old) Find command.

  • What's wrong with Leopard mail, its allowed in, something corrupting my mac

    Hi,
I recently bought a brand new 24 inch iMac and Leopard. Most things were fine until I received an unsolicited email on 28th Nov ...from a
Gemma Hindley FW; Compost like a pro
since then mail has gone haywire. I cannot delete this email at all. I cant receive any emails and I work from home and am really desperate as this is causing me major stress.
The waste paper icon has gone from my mail window and although emails are deleted from the working window, the dont go in the waste bin or the waste bin in the dock. When I quit ad reopen Gemma Hindley reappears.
Many times a completely different window appears when I open mail one that I have never seen before and is very difficult to navigate. many of the icons in the mail header bar are non operative with this window.
Other times Mail wont open, or wont quit, or cant send emails, have nt received any since Gemma this email. Then I went through this forum and found that if I
Open mail go to prefs general and switch check mail "manually.
    Force quit mail
Open Mail again go to prefs junk mail and turn off spam filtering
This then allowed me to open the usual mail working window and I received that infuriating email again and no other ones at all. I have sent myself emails and so have others but they have not been received by me at all. the above steps allowed me to send emails.
There is obviously a problem with Leopard mail. Whether or not this email has corrupted my mac I don't know. It looks like it is blocking all my incoming emails.
I am not as adept as many of you on this forum, just a simple user trying to earn a living and not able to do so at present. Help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. George UK

For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
    Problem solved.
And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • Problems with Spotlight searching of shared volumes

According to: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#spotlight, I should be able to "...search any connected Mac with Personal File Sharing enabled or a file server that’s sharing its files."
It doesn't specify what "file server", so I presume it means Spotlight should be able to search any mounted shared volume (assuming, of course, that indexing has been enabled).
I have a NAS device that I want to be able to search with Spotlight. According to mdutil, the volume is enabled for indexing, but I don't see any results when I search under "Shared" in Finder via Cmd+F. (I checked, and there's no .Spotlight folders on the volume.)
From what I recall, under Tiger you could manually specify a network volume to index, but if you dismounted the volume, you'd have to re-enable indexing on next mount. This worked for other file systems (such as Fat32 & NTFS), as well as for HFS+ drives.
According to mdutil in Leopard, the volume is still enabled for indexing even across dismounts. The NAS drive is not HFS+ formatted, but uses XFS.
I've tried deleting the index, to no avail.
Has anyone successfully used Spotlight to search mounted volumes on volumes not shared via another Mac?
    Am I missing something?

You have not missed anything.... Leopard promises but does NOT deliver.
I use an AFP server with Bonjour enabled. And NO NO NO Spotlight search is possible on this network volume...
This is outrageous and FALSE information....
Oh and - that Leopard is Sporting 300 new features is false info too.... Not even the "What is New in Leopard" says anything about 300 features.. But it sounds great doesn't it....

  • Finding directory content size with Spotlight.

Ok, I know how to do this in terminal. But I've been attempting to "gui-ize" myself more and try to explore the power of spotlight.
    Problem:
Find all directories in my Home folder whose contents exceed 500mb.
    I tried using two conditions:
    Kind: Folder
    Size: Greater than: 500mb
However, since technically the size of all directories themselves are zero this search returns zero results.
Is such a search possible with spotlight or are "power searches" like this only able to be done via the terminal?

If you put the search window into List view (I tinkered with a plist so this is my default view for search windows) and have the column for Size enabled (should be by default, if not do View->Show View Options), then do a search on Kind: Folder and click on the Size column it will list all the folders arranged by size. It is acutally pretty speedy: I have 1500 folders in my Home folder and this was actually much faster than if you use a Finder window with the option to calculate sizes and arrange by Size and mass open the folders.... I'll have to remember this in future! I added it to my Saved Searches, although it didn't save with the Size column checked.

  • Spotlight Search + Yahoo Mail

I thought I read somewhere you could search emails not stored on your phone via Spotlight. I'm using Yahoo through the mail app and searching the servers with Spotlight, but getting no results returned. Does anyone have a solution/thoughts?
    --Chris

Aha! I think I found the answer on this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6916612&#6916612
I excluded my hard drive from the Spotlight search preferences and de-selected all the optional areas where it will search. Then I renamed my hard drive without any spaces (just "MacHD"). Then I went back into Spotlight preferences, included the newly named drive, and re-selected all the options. Spotlight re-indexed, and all my mail messages appeared in searches.

  • Searching inside PDFs ... maybe even with spotlight?

Does anybody know of an application that lets me archive and search all my paper bound documents?
While there are some applications on Windows (such as ScanSnap) I've not seen anything on the Mac. The workflow I have in mind is to scan a document and then somehow being able to search for words in that document - but with no manual tagging - ideally with spotlight.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for your input so far. I realize that .pdfs are just images, so please let me elaborate.
In more technical terms, what I'm looking for is this:
A utility that scans to .pdf and then runs the document through its OCR engine. It then adds the full text of the .pdf to the file as spotlight comments. This would preserve the original layout and yet make its content searchable without manual tagging.

  • Spotlight Searches POP Mail Attachments

I started using POP to fetch my Gmail. Now Spotlight is indexing all message attachments and showing results from them (which I do not want). If I add the Mail folder to the list of locations not to be indexed by Spotlight, messages in Mail become unsearchable.
How do I stop Spotlight from showing results from my mail attachments without altogether stopping search within Mail? (I do not have Mail and Chat checked in Spotlight preferences)
    Thanks

Hello I have the same problem and I don't think this behavior happened in Lion or Snow Leopard (at least for me). Although the Spotlight "Search Results" pane in my preferences excludes "Messages and Chats", every spotlight search from the finder windows also includes result from every attachment in every mail message. As a result, spotlight searches are barely useable. I found no solution. However, it looks like it was an old bug (since 2007 at least: see https://discussions.apple.com/message/5916605#5916605). Bug or bad decision -- the limit is hard to set between the two --  that reappeared in Mountain Lion.
