Searching on Apple TV

This is not really a question but. I am wondering if I am the only one who has this request:
I have a lot of music files, about 18,000 aac and lossless. Apple TV doesn't support a quick search-option for looking up a file I want to play. Hence: scrollling with the remote. I asked myself why the nice people at Apple did not put in a search-option like they did on the remote application in my iphone.
Are there other people out there who were asking the same question? Apple: please make this possible in your next software update. Thanks.

You've got an iPhone?
The Remote App is the best option. But yes, it seems like an omission to leave out search on the main AppleTV menus.

  • Advanced Search in Apple Mail with Logical Expressions (Attibutes)

We need to be able to search in Apple Mail, currently version 3.6 (936), with advanced expressions such as the junk mail flag.
We want to search only within mail flagged as junk with a specific domain, such as a domain.com. Users are not using Junk Mail moving to junk folders yet. All junk is in the inbox until they train the rules.
Logically speaking this would look something like, FLAG:JUNK FROM:Yahoo.com. I have been unable to find the attribute for flag. It would also be helpful if there was a listing of all attributes that can be searched within mail. This type of list is available through various sources for Spotlight.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Many thanks for the kind reply. I finally installed Thunderbird and so far everything is good.  Time Machine  would, were I using the laptop in a more traditional setting, help resolve this issue. However I am prepping for a year + back pack trip to South America and elsewhere and the MacBook Pro is going along.  What I have done is install Time Machine Editor (since Time Machine is parsimonious about daily updates) and update now once a week. Better than nothing and given what my schedule on the road may be like its a better fit than once a day. One would think Apple would make Time Machine  more controllable particularly in the versions of OSX that are installed in laptops.....
In any case this is my first MacBook Pro and my first Apple computer but I am a long time Linux/Unix user so feel right at home with OSX. In spite of the mail problem, this is without a doubt  the best laptop I ve ever used....and I ve been using them since they were suitcases
Regards and many thanks for the kind read and reply.

You can't, it does not exist in Mac Mail.

  • Keyword search in Apple Notes on Mountain Lion?

Hi friends. I hope someone can enlighten me and help put some faith back into Apple's software development.
Does anyone know how to do a keyword search in Apple Notes on Mountain Lion?? I know that sounds completely stupid but let me explain...
In the top left corner there is a search field. When I enter a keyword it searches all the notes, and in the left hand pain it filters the notes that have the keyword in them. It doesn't actually show me *where" the keyword appears, it only shows the notes that *contain* them. It's just a filter, not a search. Try it for yourself.
It would be like doing a keyword search in a PDF, and it only tell you which pages it appears on, rather than where on the page. It is completely useless.
I fail to believe the program would be this limited. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Please no suggestions to go find another note program. I need notes for particular reasons.

This behavior makes complete sense to me.  If I designed it, I would do it exactly the same way.
Here's why:  Notes are not expected to be treatises.  They are expected to be reasonably short.  You should easily be able to find the search target in your relatively brief note.
Nonetheless, if you fee like you'd like to ask Apple for this feature, here's how to supply feedback to Apple:

Maybe this page can help you construct complex searches in Mail:

I noticed this line in the page:
+Note: When searching Mac Mail does not use some frequently used wildcard searches. Use of the asterisk * or the syntax teresa@somewhere returns no matches.+

    Hello, Wyseup.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Most likely this email address has been attempted to be setup as an Apple ID at some point.  You can reset your Apple ID password via the steps in the first article below.  If you do not have access to the email account, need assistance or are not receiving the password reset link, see the second article.

  • Can't do search in Apple Mail

I have installed the update to fix Mail problems in Mavericks but still cannot do a search in Mail so cannot easily find specific messages.

What finally worked was to not use iCloud at all.
I've had 3 mailboxes, all gmail and none of them worked with the searchfield in Apple Mail, only in Spotlight. All fixes have been tried, envelope index reset, spotlight and all. No luck.
Only a complete zero-erase of the drive and a clean install of Mavericks made the search work and when I activated iCloud only that icloud mailbox was being searched nothing else.
So I did another zero-erase and clean install and setup the 3 google accounts directly. Never did I activate iCloud or made any part of it active. Search kept on working, after all updates, Office 2011 install and updates. Everything works fine, just not with iCloud.
This iCloud account does contain signatures which install themselves when you enable iCloud, so my guess is that those signatures or settings for Apple Mail cause some sort of malfunction and will prohibit Apple Mail from showing any other results than iCloud from that moment on.
Of course iCloud is pretty great, but in this case it does something with Apple Mail and limits searchresults...

  • Bug in Notes ? Search for "Apple" highlights almost all Notes.

    Hi,
I just discovered that entering the keyword "apple" in the search bar of notes shows me that almost all my notes contain it.
Even though they don't. I checked it many times.
Short notes with only 5 words which cleary dont have the word "apple" are shown for example.
By deleting the notes and rewriting it ( whith "copy&paste" ) the dissappear from the search results.
Is it just me ? I can't imagine this being a bug.
Any Ideas ? Thanks in advance.

I am not a Notes user even though I have Mountain Lion and can tell you that what you describe is a very strange bug.
    Things to try:
Close Notes application and then reopen the Application and try to find if the error is reproducible.
If the issue persits, reboot your Mac.
File a bug report in the OS X Feedback Page or by creating an Apple Developer Account (Don't worry it's free).
    Hope this helps!

  • Can you still save flickr searches in Apple TV screensaver?

Does the Apple TV screensaver still have the ability to save Flickr searches for later use? I remember having a button to do it before, and I know I was able to figure it out once, because I have one saved search stored on the device. But I can't see how to do it now.
This is in Settings > Screen Saver > Photos > Flickr. There's a "Saved Searches" section in the menu there, which lists my old search, but I can't find anywhere in the current search UI to save a search, or to delete my existing saved search.

I usually use a different method, however this website http://audiko.net/ is a very easy method to do this with.

  • Can I use 'Search' in Apple Remote's 'Up Next'

I'm using the Apple Remote App with iOS8 on an iPad Mini 2.
When I use 'Up Next', I can add tracks from Albums or Artists OK, but when I try to use the Search bar to find a track to add, it won't let me enter any Search text.
    Is this correct?

RE: Mac Pro silver tower (2006-2012) Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5. (This card has just been discontinued and is no longer available from Apple dealers. There may be some new, old stock still available at resellers)
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000 Fermi, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro K5000 Kepler, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards".
    One more thing--
Flashed PC cards: There are a good many EFI flashed cards that offer boot screens and behave like official cards. "for more information about using and flashing non-Apple cards, please check out the various sites like Netkas (and others) that focus on and discuss what is known and available. (Not supported or endorsed by Apple.)"

  • ITunes 5.x crashing upon search - has Apple changed the iTunes site?

    Greetings.
    What has Apple done?
Clearly they've done something to the iTunes site.
I had iTunes for Windoze installed on 3 PCs. They're all 5.x.y.z ... (probably 5.0.1.4 - that's on one of them).
Went to search for a tune today at work (Win XP Pro machine).
Trying either to get to the Power Search screen or just trying to use the search widget in the upper right (by typing something and hitting 'Enter') caused the iTunes app to crash.
    Reliably. Repeatedly. Every time.
Same behavior on my home machine (Win XP).
    Whassup?
    Any & all help welcome.
PC that I built   Windows XP

    hi Isapeir!
I´m having the same problem and I've installed the latest version of iTunes: 6.0.4.2.
that's more disturbing. we can't use the update workaround for you that has been working for some of the folks with 5.0.x.
let's try enlisting some additional technical help with this one.
we'll get a crash log from itunes, and send it to so someone who can interpret crash logs.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
generate the crash, collect the crash log, and send it to this email address
    in the email:
    (1) state the precise version number of itunes that you're using, and the precise version number of your QuickTime. (in QuickTime, go "help > about QuickTime Player" to get the info.)
    (2) include the URL to this thread so that the person who gets the email has some context, but also give as much information about the context of the crashing as you can.
    love, b

  • What happened to searching on Apple Discussions?

Hi, there used to be a search box on the Apple Discussion web pages. Now it's gone, so if I have a question, I now have to post a new topic. Anyone know what happened, or if there's a way to get it back? Thanks.

    Hi,
There's a small announcement on the Discussions home page:
    http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=639
In the meantime you can use Google with the qualifier "site:discussions.apple.com".
    E.g. "safari crashing site:discussions.apple.com"

  • I am unable to restore my iPad. iTunes keeps coming up with "unknown error (3004)" I have updated my Windows, tried searching for apple updates, but keep being told "cannot connect to apple server" HELP PLEASE

The whole problem started when I was syncing my iPad to update it. iTunes for some reason, put it into recovery mode. I have done all the hints and tips for the error code, checked my internet connection & tried to restore on another computer, but it required an update of iTunes and would not connect to Apple server either.

    Here is the work around:
When and if you get the same error it will prompt you to select one of three choices:
You have to select the LAST choice ---either Cancel (if you do this you will keep going around in circles), Restore to YOUR settings (which is really a trick question), or Restore to Factory (sorry I can't recall exact language)
Then in itunes select your ipad under "Devices" if it doesn't automatically...(YOU CAN SKIP TO #5)
There will be 3 Boxes in the "Summary" screen for you to choose from:
VERSION: DO NOT SELECT RESTORE, BACK.. I selected "Back up to this computer", OPTIONS: click on which ever box you desire (I did #1 & #2). Then I selected "CONFIGURE UNIVERSAL ACCESS" and hit "OK".
In the bottom right hand corner you will see two choices, select "SYNC" and your ipad & computer should start the syncing process which could last a LONG time depending on how much data you have backed up.
Sorry if this doesn't work for you but it's working so far for me! Good luck...and Apple please don't do this again! So very confusing!

  • Attachements not included in search within Apple Mail

    Hi
I have a problem with the search within Mail: my attachments seem not to be included within searches. When I search for terms within an attachment, I get no results. I tried with PDFs, DOCs, RTFs and ZIPped documents.
By the way: if there happens to be some expert out there: what kinds of attachments are searched within mail (e.g. a DOC in a ZIP archive)?
My system is quite new and setup still standard (at least the spotlight preferences).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Hi,
It is caused by the deprecated features and components in Outlook 2013:
Outlook search via the Windows Shell
Outlook 2013 will no longer surface search results for mail and calendar items in Windows Explorer (or via the start menu).  Users can still utilize all of Outlook's search functionality from within the app itself.
