Searching on the Forums

When searching, it is helpful to first understand the structure of the forums. The discussion forums are organized in a hierarchy starting with category at the highest level and then discussion boards, and then topics within each board. A category is an area in which multiple boards reside. Within a board, you will find numerous user created topics. Within a topic, you will find the original post and the subsequent replies.
Searching from the Homepage
When searching from the homepage using the search box located under the main navigation at the top right of the page, you are searching all categories.
Searching from a Category Page
Currently, our categories consist of Most Active Software Boards, Most Active Hardware Boards, Additional NI Product Boards, and Special Interest Boards -- as well as 9 various language boards. If you are on one of the category pages you will see the default search option is set to search only the boards within the category you are viewing.
Click the dropdown menu to change in which section of the discussion forums you would like to conduct your search.
Searching from a Board Page
If you are on one of the board pages - such as the LabVIEW board - you will see the search option is set to search only the topics within the board you are viewing.
Click the dropdown menu to change in which section of the discussion forums you would like to conduct your search.
Search Filters
Regardless of the scope of your search, once you are on the search results page, you can make use of the filtering options on the left sidebar for advanced sorting.
The filters include changing the location of your search, filtering by author (username), date, solved or kudoed posts, type of post (only applicable when searching entire discussion forum), and topics with images or attachments.
You can also make use of the advanced search form to search for exact phrases, topics including or excluding certain words, and viewing your results by topic or specific posts.
Spellcheck in Search
When you are performing a search, the search strings are spellchecked using a weighted dictionary specific to the forum context. When you are conducting a search, your original search string is used as well as a spellchecked version. Depending on the outcomes of the two searches, the search results page displays either the results for the original string or the corrected one, i.e. if one search seems to have better results than the other.
If you receive spellchecked results and wish to instead search by your original search query, click on the text Search instead for query under the search box.
Searching for Users
From any search box, click the dropdown menu to change the search scope to users only. You can search by partial or whole usernames. Use the advanced search options to find results on biography or rank.
Navigation Search
On every page, in the main navigation, you will find a search box that allows you to search the entire ni.com site.
Searching here will yield results from the KnowledgeBase, manuals, tutorials, and more.

Yeah, I dont know, this whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  Call me crazy but you would hope that when you buy an expensive phone it would last more than 15 months which is pretty far from forever..  Its ridiculous...  Consider me an unhappy customer.
Thanks

  • How do I change the default "date range" when searching in the forums?

    Hi all,
New to the SAP forums...  How do I change the default date range when searching in the forums?  I am getting a 90 day search by default.  Then I have to change it and search again.  Argh!
    Thanks,
    --Amy Smith

    Hi Amy,
the default date range cannot be changed by users. It is defined system-wide.

  • Where is search in the forums

I have looked on forum pages on how to search a topic. For the life of me I can not find it. The only one I see is at the very top, which takes me out of forums.

That feature has been temporarily disabled, as described in this announcement. FYI, general service announcements like this are found on the right side of the main page of the Apple Discussions.

  • How can you search this forum without searching all the other forums

how can you search this forum without searching all the other forums at the same time which is a big fat waste of time.

Follow this tip to create a bookmark to a search page that searches only the forum you want or...
Browse with Firefox and enable this Greasemonkey script, which forces all searches from a sub-forum to be local.

  • What happened to the search in the discussion forum?

It seems we have lost the ability to "search" in the forum. Is it just my Mac or can we not search anymore?

    Greetings,
With the popularity of the iPhone and it's related discussion areas, we have experienced heavy usage and reduced availability of Apple Discussions today. In order to improve site performance, we have temporarily disabled the following site features:
    * Search
    * Read tracking (the "blue dots")
    * Subscription emails
We are working to restore these features as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience during this unprecedented and exciting period in Apple's history.
    Regards,
    Apple Discussions staff

  • Why has searching the forums been made so difficult?

In the old forums the search defaulted to the forum you were in. Now it searches across all forums and one has to then go and refine the search to the forum that one wants. Frustrating in the extreme.

Needs tweaking. And it will be getting it in time. A lot of people are requesting it.

  • Problems with searching in this forum

Is anyone else finding that the searching in this forum is no longer bringing back the same information that it used to? The problem seems to have started in the last few days. Any advice would be appreciated. I hope Sun fixes this!

It looks like they are redesigning the search and they have a link to the beta version on the page. I tried it but it doesn't search just the forum we're in like the current search used to do. I don't like the new search page at all!
I told them that on their feedback link also.

  • Mozilla Firefox problems with the forums

I just spent an hour trying to access the forums when using Firefox 12. It does not display the bar with the New Your Stuff history etc. It updated itself yesterday or the day before and since then it is impossible to use on this forum.
I just had a thought and tried IE9 64 bit and it works OK. Loaded the same url on Firefox and the bar with the welcome username was not there.
It shows that I am logged in under the search box but still asks for me to log in. I even contacted Customer support, but they could not help.
So if you have problems accessing the forum, use a different browser.

I tried to log in on the page and it would not accept my password as I was already logged in to Adobe. A new password made no difference, it still would not accept the password and username. Logging in with IE9 was no problem.
Normally when I click on the adobe forums link on the Dreamweaver help  I am sent to http://forums.adobe.com/community/dreamweaver?lang=en_US  on my default browser - Mozilla. For some days now I have not been sent there, but arrive on the Adobe main page, and have to search for the forums using their search feature. Perhaps there was a crossed or broken link?
However, today for the first time for a while, it seems to be all working fine. I did report the problem to Mozilla, but whether they did anything I do not know at the moment.
I will see if this continues to work properly and report back.
    Best wishes
    Howard

  • Searching in the Finder Window - can default location to search be changed?

I think this behavior isn't unique to Leopard, but it's always confused me a bit.
If I'm in a finder window -- say, for instance in my Applications Folder, and I enter a term in the search box -- such a "Firefox".
The top bar of the search results defaults to "This Mac". In general, I'd rather have it default to the folder that I'm in (in my example, "Applications").
Is there way to change this behavior?
    Thanks. -

I did a search on the forums and haven't found an answer for this yet. This issue is EXTREMELY annoying. In my art department, we work off of a server that has all of our ads, named with their account numbers for quick finding. When searching for a particular ad in Tiger, it remembered to search the selected file on the server. Now in Leopard, it defaults every time to "This Mac" and by "Contents". I'd rather have it remember what location type I last searched, and "File Name" be default, since it'll likely be faster than searching file contents.
One workaround is to do a search in the desired folder with a single word, save the search in the Finder sidebar. Whenever you want to search it again, just click the saved search, double-click the search word and type your search. Problem is, if you have many different folders, your sidebar would be huge.
We need an Apple update to fix this, unless somebody can figure out how to change it.

    Ben,
If we do a search on the forum with nothing as keyword, we can get all the threads in this forum listed. Sorting by Replies will display (and offfcourse display 50 threads per page - oops that's the maximum....) and we have to look what we want. This is pretty vague technique. These are the top 3 threads.
    1) Rube Goldberg code
    2) 第2届LabVIEW专家组竞赛获奖程序下载 (Chinese board - 2nd LabVIEW Group Contest Awards Program Download)
    3) Oscilloscope project (Our favorite JLV - one man army - Managed to take care throughout this whole thread)

  • Logical AND not working in the forum search box

Logical AND of search terms does not seem to be working in the MSDN forum search box. Example: I go to the Project Customization and Program forum and type the word
    subproject
in the search box. I get a lot of hits. So now I try to reduce the number of hits by typing
    subproject AND read
Surprisingly, I now get MORE hits than before.   The same thing happens if I enter
    subproject & read
Do the MSDN forums not support the standard logical AND combinations of search terms?  If they do support these combinations, what is the syntax?
