Searching PDF files viewed thru Safari

I know I can view PDF files in Safari on my 3GS but is there a way to search them without having to download them onto the phone?
Thanks,
Scott

No, as all you have is a viewer of PDF's not something that can interpret content, and create a searchable index.
And you cannot save to your iPhone in ay case - it cannot store files other than those attached to emails, or those in the Photo library.

  • PDF files viewed in Safari or downloaded through Safari: Text appears as black and gray boxes

Hi, a client of ours is having issues viewing PDFs on her home computer. When she views them in browser OR if she saves them through the browser and opens them, she gets the same result. All text (it is an uncommon font being used) shows up as boxes:
The error is occuring on OSX 10.6.8 using Safari 5.1.10
The PDF file is being saved out through Word
Client does not have Adobe Acrobat Pro
Is there anything that can be done to get this to display properly on Snow Leopard / in Safari?
Please let me know if you need additional details about the situation, and I'll get them from the client.

Remove any AdobePDFViewer plugins from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins, restart, and the problem should be gone.

  • Bug - Safari 5.1.5 breaks the keyword search of PDF files displayed on Safari

Bug - Safari 5.1.5 breaks the keyword search of PDF files displayed on Safari.
After updating to Safari 5.1.5 with Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.3 on Mac OS X 10.6.8, it is not possible to search for keywords in PDF documents displayed on Safari.
I understand that it is a bug. Is there any way to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Hi...
    Try deleting a plugin...
Open the Finder. From the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Typs this:    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin  (or PDF Browser plugin) to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, back to the Finder menu.
    Go > Go to Folder
    Type this:  ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safarfi/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Issue with opening PDF file link from Safari

    Hi Everyone,
I got a problem with opening PDF file link from Safari 4.04. Instead of getting a normal pdf content, it shows some weird characters. Not sure it is something wrong with Adobe Reader Plugin or Safari?
I have uploaded a screenshot of the issue in the adobe forum (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/531870). Please help!
    Many Thanks,
    John

There's nothing wrong, except the fact that you have Adobe Reader installed. You don't need it, so get rid of it; it will only cause problems with Safari. What you're seeing is the contents of the PDF file, rather than having it displayed.
If you want to download a PDF file, you can either Control-click on the link and choose "Download Linked File As…", or you can Option-click on the link for the file and it will be downloaded to your Download folder (usually your Desktop).
If you want to view a PDF file in Safari, you don't need Adobe Reader; Safari is perfectly capable of doing this by itself and has been for years. Adobe Reader will only get in the way and slow everything down.

  • Indexing and Searching PDF Files

    Hi All,
I am trying to store and search PDF files in the oracle database.
I can insert and index the PDF files just fine but cannot get any result. I always get No Rows.
Here's what I am doing and the issues I am facing.
I created a Table with fields
    ID (VARCHAR)
    NAME (VARCHAR)
    DOC (BLOB)
I inserted the PDF file in the BLOB field through a Java program and insert worked fine as I verified by retreiving the PDF and writing to file.
I created index using following SQL:
create index my_index on PDF_TABLE(PDF_FLD) indextype is ctxsys.context
    parameters ('datastore ctxsys.default_datastore
    filter ctxsys.inso_filter');
The index was created successfully without any problems.
I ran query as follows and got no rows although the searched text is in PDF
SELECT SCORE(1), PDF_FLD from PDF_TABLE WHERE CONTAINS (PDF_FLD, 'Table of Cotents',
    1) > 0;
I tried alternate queries as well with no luck.
    Any ideas ??
    Thanks

After creation the index you need execute next operations.
first, check that your index tables conatins indexed terms. Execute
    select token_text from dr$YOUR_INDEX$i;
Second, you will need to check the index errors table CTX_INDEX_ERRORS. This is owned by the user CTXSYS, and most users do NOT have # SELECT privilege to it by default.
If it's OK, then check that your PDF documents is supported by INSO filter.

    "PDF - Portable Document Format
Acrobat Versions 2.1, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 including Japanese PDF"

For Oracle 9i you could install 9.2.0.4 patchset (it included INSO FILTER 7.5)

  • Why won't pdf files print from Safari?

why won't pdf files print from Safari? I get blank pages. They print fine from Firefox. OS X 10.8.4

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • How to search pdf files in another language?

I have been trying to search a  large Arabic documents but not result came up?

Yes it is happening in all pdfs files that views Arabic writing, see
attached as an example. When I search any Arabic word I don't get no result
in either basic or advance search boxes.
Also, I am using Windows7 Home Premium as operating system in my computer.
Note: Select any Arabic word from the enclosed text and search it, and see
if you can get a result.

  • Some PDF files garbled in Safari and PDF HD

I have a 3 page sample of a book on my website (generated from InDesign) that reads fine on the Mac Safari and other programs on the Mac.
However, the PDF will only show garbled, overlying text when viewed on the iPad Safari and PDF HD. It is not file size related as I have an 8-page newsletter nearly four times the size of file and also created in InDesign --> PDF that views just fine.
I have exported the PDF and also print to PDF as a new file and it still comes out a mess.
The graphics and music illustrations are ok, some lines of text, and titles. The fonts used are Times TT and Helvetica. There is also a IPA linguistic font used. Basically all other text in the three pages is just garbage.
Anyone else see this happening and how can I fix the situation so clients can see the sample on iPad? Can the imbedded EPS files in the document be what is fouling things up? The illustrations are essential for the sample from the book.

I have this same problem in all PDF readers and Safari.
The problem exacerbates itself when a PDF document gets zoomed in or out.
I have some large, multi-page PDFs that are fine and some that aren't.
I even have one or two page PDFs that exhibit the same issues.
I can't see any pattern to whether a PDF will view correctly or not.
I have reported this via Apple iPad feedback.
You may want to do the same to let Apple know tis is an issue on some iPads or iOS software.
    Here's the feedback link

  • Secure & Search PDF Files

    Hi,
I am using CF10 with SQL Server 2012. I am building a site for my client that includes catalogues of PDF files. What is the best way to achieve this with Cold Fusion. In the past, the link to the PDF files were bookmarked and were accessible by the users after their subscription is expired __MCE_ITEM__L
I have used Verity 7 years ago (CF MX I think) to do the search. If the user is subscribed to a certain catalogue, within the search results, a link is activated and the user is able to view the entire file. If not only a highlight will come up asking the user to subscribe.
What is the best way to achieve this:
__1. Using SQL Server blob fields? Will Verity be able to search PDFs inside BLOB fields?
__2. SQL Server Full Text Search? How will we return the results to Cold Fusion
__3. Keep the PDF files outside the database, what is the best technique to secure and search the files?
    Any other suggestion is appreciated.
    Thanks So Much

Can't help directly on the question. However, the generic problem in Windows is that the search will only delve into a list of MS denoted file types. I spent a year looking for a file I had misplaced and did not remember the name of. The following link resolved my issue and now I can search for anything in any file. I followed the registry edit in the response. Editing the registry can be dangerous and you should back up the registry at a minimum unless you know what you are doing. I also do not know if the fix is available in Windows 7. As I recall, I did find it in VISTA. Good luck if you use this, but also be careful. Bill

  • PDF file VIEW & PRINT differences: Preview 4.2 & Acrobat 9.3

My original two-page OpenOffice document (.odt file extension) exported to PDF file format (.pdf file extension). I used Acrobat 9.3 to force the document to display both pages as continuous facing - so far, so good. I've found two issues - neither of which appear to be related to OpenOffice. The font used is Arial 10pt and larger (for headings and such).
    1) PRINTING: When printing the PDF file from Preview the document size and layout is printed identically when compared to the original ODT file - GOOD! BUT when printing the PDF file from Acrobat 9.3 the margin padding is increased by 0.25 inches on all four sides. YIKES! I was able to fix this problem by getting (i.e., remove the additional padding) by resetting Acrobat's "Page Scaling" option from the default value of "Fit to Printable Area" to "None".
The good news is that saving the file within Acrobat 9.3 with the updated "Page Scaling: None" setting seems to persist - but can I be sure the proper print dimensions are preserved when this PDF file is printed from a Windows platform? Does anyone know why Acrobat increases the margin padding like this?
    2) VIEW: I cannot get Preview.app to display the PDF file with continuous facing - only one page at a time is displayed even though View > PDF Display > Two Pages is selected!?! Acrobat 9.3 displays the document correctly with both pages. Any ideas why this may be and how to fix Preview to display both pages upon opening the document?
A minor sub-issue here is that Acrobat 9.3 on Mac OS X seems to use a display font that isn't truly Arial - the display of many characters' line weights are uneven and the document has decidedly Windows-ish look to it. Preview does a much better in displaying the document in true Arial. Fortunately, the true "Arial-ness" of the document in print format is not noticeable once the padding problem was resolved (see above).
I'm mostly concerned about the PRINT variance - I intend to publish/distribute this PDF document (a technical white paper) and many more like it to 1000's of clients but I have no control over which "VIEW" tool they use. Net/net: This unwanted 0.25 inch additional padding really does take away from the visual esthetics of the document - I've shown this variance to several people and we are in 100% agreement on this.
    TIA ---

Glad it helped; (for any nit-pickers out there I should have typed 8.2.2, sorry).

  • Can no longer download pdf file since last safari update

Since the last OS update (I am running Safari 6.1; OX 10.8.5) pdf files via Safari fail to open. Yet they do open in Firefox, which is 'not' my default browser. Anyone else having issues?

    Try this ...
Open a Finder window then from the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Click Go.
If you see the:  AdobePDFViewer plugin (or anything Adobe related) in the Internet Plug-Ins folder, move it to the trash.
Restart your Mac and try opening a PDF file.

  • Print web page to PDF file with live links in PDF file like Apple Safari's pdf prints?

With Firefox for Macintosh, can I print a web page to PDF in such a manner that when I option the PDF file and click on a link, it is a live link that opens in my system's default web browser?
With Apple Safari, when I print a web page to a PDF file, the links on that page are "live" and work to open the web browser to their destination. The PDF files I get from Firefox are dead. Clicking on link does not open in browser.
Is there a way to get FireFox to act more like Safari in this regard?
    Thanks

Seems the referenced thread is about Lion. I am having this problem in Snow Leopard 10.6.5 with Firefox. Any way to get PDFs with working links in Snow Leopard using FIrefox? I do not really want to have to use Safari for this purpose.
Going forward when and under what circumstances will future versions of Firefox be able to create PDFs with live links? Are there any circumstances where a current or past version of Firefox can do it under any current or past version of OS X?
    Thanks.

  • Iframe is not working for pdf files in iPad safari

    Hi,
Pdf file is not displaying properly in iPad safari. I have faced below issue while using iframe
Not displaying in full width and height
Not able scroll other pages in pdf
    Thanks,
    Arun

    Hi Viraj,
You need to upload an image "pdf.gif" in \etc\public\mimes\images folder.
Also, you need to define the MIME Type for PDF documents in portal.
Navigate to System Administration -> System Configuration -> Knowledge Management -> Content Management -> Utilities -> MIME Types.
Check whether you already have a MIME Type for PDF or not. Else you can create a new Type "pdf" with MIME Type "application/pdf".

  • Cannot search PDF file contents - Windows 7 32 bit - Adobe Acrobat X

    Hello,
If this is in the wrong forum please move it.
I work in an enterprise environment and our systems are having trouble searching file contents in Windows Explorer using Acrobat X and Windows 7 32 bit. The files are on a mapped network location.
After removing all adobe products from a test machine and reinstalling the Acrobat 10.0.0 software the windows explorer search function seems to work locally but once I install Acrobat 10.1.anything update, it will fail. It never worked on a networked location.
I have also tried installing Adobe Acrobat 11.0.00 after removing 10.0. Then I made sure my indexing settings were setup to index files and contents and made sure the .pdf extension was selected under file types.
I then created a mapped drive to the network location, and setup my indexing to the folder on that network drive. I was able to do this by installing this Microsoft Add-in that allows use of UNC paths in the indexing.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=3383
Once I set this up, I rebuilt my index and restarted the computer. This is where it gets weird. I can now search the contents of PDF files in this indexed network location, but only by one letter. Searching "c type:pdf" will produce results, but "co type:pdf" will not. I know for sure some of the documents have the work Comment in there so this should should up.
Does anyone have experience getting this to work correctly with the latest versions of Adobe Acrobat X or XI and Windows 7 32 bit? It would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I will never understand why but in the end I rebuilt my 32 bit dell laptop from scratch and the pdf files can now be searched.
I cannot search them on a mapped drive as I was able to with Windows XP because now they must be indexed and windows 7 will seems not to allow a mapped location to be indexed which must be done to make the pdf files searchable so I have had to move the files to the local drive.
My Windows 7 64 bit systems can search the mapped drives just fine without needing to be indexed. Again I will never understand why this works and the 32 bit machine does not.

  • Cannot open  pdf files saved from Safari

I can read large pdf files from websites opened in Safari but when I save them and later try to open them with Adobe reader I get the following error message
Adobe Reader could not open 'ACOS-2013-final.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
This appears to only have happened when I installed the latest security update for the iMac
