Second bulging battery...

I'm having my second bulging battery replaced in as many years. My question is did Apple really fix this problem, or will I be purchasing another battery in another year when the "extended" CD MBP warranty goes south? I have a 17" BTW...
I know Apple doesn't see these boards. Question is how many people here have had the same issue? Repeatedly?
Next question: Does anyone think its related to temperature? I say that because I have been recently playing Guild Wars on Crossover Games, and that makes the temperature go up and the fans go crazy.
And lastly, has this problem been "fixed" on the latest models of MBP? Should I drop this one on CraigsList and get me a new one?

I'm sure. You're wrong (and right, partially). There are two Apple battery replacement programs. One is a recall/exchange for specific serial numbers of 15" MBPs - this was contemporary with the recall from other brands, although Apple did state that there was no physical danger from the batteries. The other is a general replacement program for batteries that exhibit symptoms like short run time or physical deformation - that's the one that applies to you.
See this page: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/macbookpro.html
They don't blame Sony, no. But during that period (2/06 - 4/07) all Apple notebooks shipped with batteries manufactured by Sony, and Apple states that some batteries "may have battery performance issues" and lists "visibly deformed" as a symptom of an affected battery.

I bought a new  Macbook pro in 02/26/2013 from Apple Canadian Ices -003.  Than I could not use it, because  my cursor uncontrollably  was jumping around the screen, I was  resumed my trackpad become bulging, Than on11/25/ 2013 they changed my trackpad for free, because was manufactoring defect,  but not the bulging battery.  They said that is do not needed.  Since that my cursor is quiet often quivering, I think my Macbook has serious  manufacturing defect. But they said no, during a year period I went to  the genius bar at least 15 times, with this and similar problems.   I went there yesterday, with different problems, and they said one of the screws  came off from my   truck pad, therefore they need to fix it and change it.  I said: -  What,  how, what  is the real problem?  A screw does not comes off just like that?  They will change my trackpad again, but not the battery. They said  has to rebuild the operation system, I'm  saving all of my data right now! I would like to exchange the battery too, or maybe get a new Macbook. My Macbook is 2010 China model. How long I would have this trackpad  problem? What are you suggesting?

If it's a 2010 as you say towards the end of your post, it's out of warranty. The battery isn't covered in that case. Why don't you just buy a new battery if that's your concern? If it's a 2013 as you say up at the top, it shouldn't have a bulging battery. How do you know it does? If it really does, ask for the store manager and explain the problem.

  • Bulging Battery / excessive heat when charging

    Hello,
I have a bit of a problem with my blackberry:
    1. Annoying unread messages that won't go away
    2. Excessive Heat when charging
    3. Bulging Battery
Do you guys thinks that this warrants for a warranty exchange? Or is it ok for me to keep using it?

With annoying unread messages, you have to deal it with your carrier if its SMS or email provider if its email.
With bulging battery and excessive heat when charging - please refrain from using your phone while charging OR you may look for the best Blackberry charger (Model: PSMC04A) because the output is 700mA unlike the charger that came with your phone, its only 200-450mA. This is not meant to use while you are charging but because its a pretty fast charger, it doesnt take much time to complete the 100%

  • Bulging battery in Iphone 5.

I just send my iphone 5 in for repairs due to a bulging battery and was informed that it was due to overcharging. Is this true?
The phone was bought in May 2013 and after checking, was informed by Apple rep that I do not qualify for the battery replacement programme for iPhone 5. Is this a common lifespan for iphone batteries?
    Comments greatly appreciated.

    Hi Mabaeyens,
Thanks for the reply. Ya, did check on the eligibility and Apple rep is correct. I don't qualify. Also, I have only used the accessories that came with the phone, namely cords and plugs. And, no power plugs from different country. Well, Apple already said it's not their fault and suppose would have to accept that my iphone battery only last 1 1/2 years. It is just annoying to accept that my way cheaper Nokia and Blackberry had batteries that last 10 and 6 years respectively. My wife's Nokia E72 is still using it's original battery after 6 years.

  • Why did the Apple 'genius' tell my my bulging battery was normal?

Why did the Apple 'genius' tell my my bulging battery was normal

The battery has a cycle count of 101 and is listed in good condition and @ 2 years old.  The 'genius' said it was 'normal' and NOT defective.  And was probably because I left it plugged in most of the time.
I remined him how the lithium ion battery and its associated charging system are supposed to be very sophisticated and are reported to not overcharge the battery and to extend its life. I also cited where I had read that the swelling usually occurrs when a battery does not ventilate properly,
I asked him why the five other Apple laptops I owned for years never had that 'normal' condition.
I pretty much got the dumb deer-in-the headlights stare.

  • Bulging Battery Damages Case

Has anyone had a problem (or seen mention of a problem) where a swelling/bulging battery would affect the case of the MacBookPro - for instance, causing the latch not to hook properly unless closed with some pressure?

From that picture I wouldn't have though it weren't enough to permanently deform your MBP but who knows. Unfortunately the only ones what have a good idea though is Apple and they aren't telling.

  • 6th Gen Nano - 25 seconds of battery life?

Ok, For Christmas i received the new iPod Nano, the 6th Generation one. but, ever since unpacking the thing, i only been able to squeeze out about 24.7 seconds of battery life at most - after leaving it plugged in for 3 and a half Hours.
Any Ideas on How to fix this? Do i need to send it back? Am i illegible to send it back since i leave overseas in italy?

    The Adapter isn't complicated...
Ok, for those who don't know, The Voltage ratings in the United States (and many other countries) and in most central European countries are not the same. The US uses 120v in their plugs, and the EU countries use anywhere from 220v-240v in their plugs. Plugging a US appliance that isn't dual voltage into a EU plug will most likely result in that appliance Burning out, or Blowing up.
The Result to this is a 120v to 220v-240v Transformer. THAT is what i plugged the adapter into.

  • Macbook Pro 17" Swelling/Bulging Battery(A1189)

Hi all, i just walked into my room this evening and discovered that for some reason my macbook pro was not even on the table and discovered that the battery had started to come out from the bottom, bulging on the right hand side.
I have read lots of threads about previous recalls and i bought my computer around December 2008 and bought the 3 yr protection plan and therefore will expire in December 2011. Should I be able to easily make the case for a free replacement being that this is currently and has been a problem in the past for these batteries? This could have damaged myself and/or the other hardware parts of the computer.
I do not have an Apple Store close by so my only option was to get someone to call me tomorrow morning. I hope that i don't have to resort to demanding a free one. Hopefully i will just explain the situation, let the rep know that I am aware of previous battery issues and he will just issue me a free replacement.
    Any thoughts are welcome! thanks!

Of course they'll send you a new one. What part of 3 year protection plan/warranty do you not understand?

  • My second BMP battery is also broken

    Hello everyone,
My first MBP battery was changed due the Apple's replacement program. First one was only 12 days old and it had lost almost 30% of its capacity. This second one is "much" older one but I have only 42 loadcycles. Does Apple, Sony, or whoever is making these batteries have any qualitycontrol?
Ok, after 40 cycles my battery keeps going for 20min or so. When power goes back to 0% and I put powercord on it takes only 1-2min to load up to 75%.
Again I have to send whole computer to service. First time midplane was changed and now they want to investigate this problem.

    Hi,
I have currently 3 batteries, one of them having been replaced on the exchange program.
The one I currently use is less than 6 months old, and behaves erratically since 10.4.8 upgrade and the new firmware installation. I did not test the other ones yet.
Yesterday, the MBP battery was drained during sleep period (two hours) and only showed 500 mw max capacity when I plugged the power cord. It "pretended" to be full after 10 minutes of charge but in fact continued to fill up (orange light on the power device) for at least one hour. The day before, it had charged overnight, with the orange lid being lightened for at least 4 hours..
After one hour or so of charge during working, it showed 2h45 capacity and 5000 wts.
This morning, the same battery displayed 3000 wts total capaci ty (500 left)..
If someone has called applecare already, I would be interested to know Apple's feedback. My bet is that it might well be a firmware/hardware problem with the MBP.
I will test the other batteries and be back to this discussion

  • Please advise me on a bulging battery

My batery area has bulged with the area bending ...do I take it to Apple to take the battery out or can I do it myself

Unless you are really experienced with computers, I would say take it to apple.
See, taking a battery out and replacing it should be a easy in and out. My concern is if the battery is leaking or something if it is that deformed. And you do not want that dripping on anything. especially not yourself or your computer's other components.

  • Bulging battery - no replacement??

I have a macbook that looks brand new because I "dock" it 99.9% of the time.  I took it with me to work yesterday and noticed it was not sitting flat.  The battery is completely bulging--scary stuff for anyone who has seen a LiOn battery go up in flames!!
I took it to the Genius Bar today and they very matter-of-factly told me that I need to buy a new battery!?  My battery holds a charge perfectly well because I never really take the notebook off AC power.  The guy who helped me advised me to not use that battery anymore because it's not safe.
If this is a safety issue, I can't believe Apple won't replace this battery.  Seems a heck of a lot cheaper than a resulting lawsuit if the battery goes up in flames and injures me, burns down my house, etc.
    What gives, Apple??

I had a faulty battery on a previous MacBook.  The guy at the authorised Apple repairer said that Apple were very cagey about changing batteries, and they actually had a computer program they used to decide whether a battery could be replaced under warranty.  Turns out mine was covered.

  • Bulging battery

    Hey all,
My macbook (A1181) battery has bulged on me. I was told by a friend that there is a program to replace the battery due to this as a defect? Is anyone aware of this? If I can save $140 on a new one that would be great.

  • Bulging battery in Egypt.  Can I get an out of warranty replacement somehow?

The subject pretty much says it all.  I'm living in Egypt but bought my first generation black MacBook in the US in 2006.  Earlier this year I noticed the battery bulging to the point where getting it in the case is problematic.  I know this is an issue with many Apple batteries for some reason.  Is there a way to get an out of warranty replacement sent here?
A pic here for those interested.

I highly doubt if Apple will grant a warranty exception for a battery that is 6 years old. Just purchase a new one.
