Second Display flashing on and off randomly

Since upgrading to Lion, my second display (ViewSonic VX2235wm) flashes on and off frequently. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? This problem is with a second display hooked to my 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's driving me nuts!

I've since tried other resolutions and haven't found any others that are stable.  I've used the monitor with another system and had no problems and the problem started immediately after the Lion install, so the issue is clearly Lion-related.
I haven't heard of many people having this issue, so I'm contemplating upgrading the monitor to get around it. (Longterm, the 1360x768 solution is unacceptable to me as it stretches the image.) I think it may be specific to a few makes/models of monitors and possibly even to a graphics chip/monitor combo. I think if it were more general, there would be more noise about it: a two monitor set-up isn't uncommon.

  • Computer display flashing on and off

So for the past couple weeks, whenever we turn on our computer, our display flashes on and off to the point to where its practically unusable. Eventually it stops after at least half an hour of blinking, but I was wondering, what could be wrong and how could I fix it? The computer isn't really affected, between flashes it isn't shutting down and the log in is still available, however, it only shows what I'm doing for a second before flashing back off. We tried switching displays but that didn't work either. Is there anything that could be done or should we just get rid of it?

Glad that you found the cause, expensive as it may be. I am not sure about this Out of Range message. What sort of monitor are you using? Most will connect and the Displays preferences self adjust.
Within the preferences are a number of display resolutions and refresh frequencies (in Hz) but these are not always shown (for example with my notebook monitor it displays resolutions not refresh rates (always the same for the built in monitor) but when I attach a monitor, such as HDTV or projector, I am offered a range of rates for each resolution.

  • External Display flashes on and off will not stay on.

When I turn on my Samsung external LCD display which is connected to the iMac, it flickers on and off and will not stay on. What could cause this problem. I tried different resolution settings to no effect. I had been using the display without problems until recently. I wonder if it was a system software update.

Are you using some sort of adapter to hook it to the Mac? I know on my iMac that I use an external monitor on I use a mini DVI to VGA connector. If you are using something like that it could be the adaptor.
I would think if it was software there would be more posts on it. Yours is the only one I have read on this subject.

  • Why is my Thunderbolt display flashing on and off?

    Hi -
I ave a 25 month old Thunderbolt 27" display that I run from my 25 month old (1 month past the applecare) MacBook Pro.  Since upgrading to Mavericks my MBP runs like junk - but that may be another story.
Last night - shortly after connecting the MBP and booting up, the display started going black for a second and then coming back. This happened about 5 times within the next 2 minutes before I shut down, checked all the connections and rebooted.  Within a minute of being fully operational it started again so I shut down again.  On the third boot things calmed down.  It flashed once - off then on - then stablized for the rest of the night.  All of this time the screen on the MBP itself remained on and un-flickering.
    What is happening??
I've checked all the cables and they are exactly as they were when I set the thing up 25 months ago.
Is there a battery that has to be changed?
Is the MBP causing this or is the display dying on it's own?
I should be able to get more than 25 months out of a monitor - don't you think?
Can anyone lead me to a solution?
    TIA -
    j2

I saw it happen the other day and realized that I had left a piece of paper on the track pad. As soon as I removed the paper it stopped. Computer seems fine.

  • External monitor flashes on and off randomly after wake from sleep

I have a Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz hooked up to a Samsung SyncMaster 2033 External monitor via the MiniDisplayPort-DVI connector.
After waking from sleep, the external monitor will go blank for a fraction of a second at random intervals (display on the MBP remains normal). The flickering clusters are about minutes apart, while flickers within a cluster (usually 2-3 flickers per cluster) is of order seconds apart. "Detect displays" will not make this go away. The only way I can make it go back to normal is to unplug-and re-plug the MiniDisplayPort connector on the MBP.
Anyone else got a more elegant solution to this that does not involved wearing down the displayport?

I tried this.  No change.  However, I did start playing with the Display settings.  Oddly enough, when I change the disfunctioning monitor to 720p it starts working again.  Does this mean anything to anyone?

  • MBP display flashes on and off, then the MBP freezes

Recently, my MBP started acting up. I can't figure it out. The display will go black, then will return to normal (over and over). After awhile, it just freezes. Any ideas?

It could be a power inverter problem, but you might try a disc repair to see if it's software related.
Start in single user mode by holding down Apple/S at startup
When you see scrolling text let go of the keys
When the text stops and you see a #root: prompt enter
    fsck -fy
    and hit return
Let it run through all the checks and repairs; if it fails first time run it again, if it finds and repairs anything run it again. (Some fixes can take a few passes) When it says "appears to be OK" enter
    reboot

  • 4400 (flashing on and off)

    Hello experts,
I have a MSI G4Ti4400, I purchased about a year ago and it is having problem displaying, the screen keeps turning on and off ever 5 to 6 seconds (a flash on and off). What should I do? How do I make exchange with MSI if this item is broken?
    Thank you all,
    Mike

    Mike,
It would help if you listed all your specs so we would know exacly what we were looking at. Then I would try swapping monitors with another comp and see if the problem stays with the comp or follows the monitor.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • IPhone mute bell randomly flashing on and off.

I have an iPhone 3gs and the mute bell picture keeps randomly flashing on and off the screen. Doesn't affect calls but is very annoying. Only been doing it since IOS 5.0.1 update. It doesn't have a set pattern but is doing it more and more each day. Any suggestions? Thanks

The switch is physically broken. It doesn't have anything to do with the software update, just coincidence.
Take it to the Apple Store.

  • 6700 Classic screen flashing on and off since scre...

I have just changed the LCD screen on my 6700. The new screen works fine whilst the phone is in use, but as soon as the normal standby happens, ie after about 20 seconds, the screen starts to flash on and off. As soon as any of the buttons is pressed the screen stops flashing and is on and back to normal. I have tried resetting to factory default. Tried to update firmware, but the version is 10.50 and is unable to be updated.
Is there a way to obtain the latest version of the firmware via my PC so that it can be uploaded to the phone?
Is it possible that there may be a fault with the screen or ribbon cable, which is strange as the screen work fine and displays all pixels when in use.
Any suggestions as to what can be tried next?

    Thanks for speedy reply.
Yes I did change the screen myself as the local approved Nokia Repair Centre would not replace the screen under warranty as they stated that cracked screens are not covered by the Nokia warranty. They then mentioned that they had none in stock anyway and were not placing their next order until 24th October.
I have now put the cracked screen back into the phone and normal operation has been resumed. From this I conclude that although the new screen worked fine when the phone was in use, there is an inbuilt fault that causes the flashing.
Thanks for the info on the updates, that was the process that I was trying to use. Once i typed in the code number from the phone, the website said that 10.50 was the correct firmware.

  • Monitor keeps flashing on and off

I have a mac G4 quicksilver running 10.4.11. The machine runs fine for what it is. The problem is with the monitor. I had an old apple display hooked up to it which began to flash on and off --- for no reason. I would unplug the monitor for a while, plug it back in, it would work fine for a bit...then the power would flash on and off...on and off...over and over. So, I thought the problem was with the monitor. I got a second monitor from work, which has never had any problems, plugged it into the G4 and before long, the same thing was happening to the new monitor...power turning on and off, on and off. For a while it will work...then just go off.
Since the same thing is happening with both monitors, this leads me to think it’s something with the G4...but I don’t know what. Maybe the port where the monitor plugs into on the back of the computer is bad?? Is that possible?
Does anyone have any ideas?? Can someone point me in the right direction of what I need to check?

Hi! For starters open it up and see if the video card has a fan on it and if so verify if it's working. Once you are sure of that you can start troubleshooting the problem better. Tom

  • Music spontaneously starts, stops, stutters at random and I'm not even using that app. Repeated attempts to pause the song and close the app have no affect. Just keeps popping on and off randomly no matter what I'm doing at the time.

How do I eliminate this glitch?  Music spontaneously starts, stops, stutters at random and I'm not even using that app. Repeated attempts to pause the song and close the app have no affect. Just keeps popping on and off randomly no matter what I'm doing at the time. I tried double-clicking the Home button which brings up all of the active apps, touched and held the Music icon until all the icons started wiggling, tapped the Close icon in the upper left corner of the Music app to close the app completely, but the app is still open and still randomly stuttering. I did notice that the play button icon flashes in the upper right corner of the screen when this happens and it appears and disappears in concurrence with the Music app stuttering. When the music starts, the icon appears and when it stops, the icon disappears again. When the music stutters on and off, the icon appears and disappears rapidly and in sync with that random glitch. This just started today for no apparent reason. I turned the iPad off, waited 30 seconds and turned it back on. As soon as it was finished starting up, the same music glitch began again immediately. I'm using iOS 6.1.3.

Well, no one seems to have any answers or ideas for me, I'll update what I've been able to accomplish.
I reloaded all 14 disks in the time frame of watching Lord of the Rings on Fri. nite.
Funny thing is, the first disk pulled the info from the online store! Hooray!
Wait-then all the next 13 could find no information online...what the heck is up with that? So I MANUALLY assign each disk a new track # to co-inside with each disk, spent about 2 hours doing that.
But still, itunes tells me my playlist is too large, there's not enough space on the ipod. so I unchecked 1 1/2 disks (I'd listen to 1/2 of disk 1 previously) and voila! there's my ipod full of my book. Finally. But what a lot of bother just to keep things in order!

  • Apple 30" Display turning on and off by itself? HELP!

    Greetings,
I'm experience this weird problem with my 30 inch display. I don't know why it's happening or to begin to troubleshoot it. So basically, I'm shutting down my computer and display every night. The next day the display power light is on by itself before I turn the computer back on, sometimes it's flashing on and off. And when I turn the computer on it doesn't change, the display just turns on and off every few seconds.
I found a temporary fix, which is to un-and-replug the display's psu either from the wall or just from the psu brick... that'll prevent the problem from happen until the next after it's been off the entire night. WHY?
Any help on this would greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead.

I'm getting the same thing myself. I also have the problem that the display sometimes flickers on and off when I first boot up. Again... unplugging the ACD power from the brick and back in again temporarily cures it. I initially thought it was the video card in my Mac, an ATI 2600XT because the card eventually died. However, I have just put an Nvidia GT120 in the machine and the same thing is happening. The display works fine with my Macbook Pro 2.6. Any ideas would be most welcome.

  • My iphone 5 flashing on and off

my iphone 5 went from stuck into restore setting to errors to now flashing on and off after i tried for hours to restore because of the first issue

Check and make sure you have enough battery life left. If not, this will cause the device to flash off and on. Second you can also make sure assisted touch is on so better assist you with the device multi-touch display.
Multi-Touch Assistaive settings can be adjusted under:
Settings--Accessibility--Assistive Touch Enable to toggle to ON position.
If the battery is not fully charged, plug it into a wall outlet with the proper charger and leave it plugged in until you see a Battery icon displayed on the display, once this is on you may see a little red at the bottom of the battery meaning that your battery was drained. This may also help resolve your issue.
