Second display has no input

I've connected two different displays to my powerbook. The computer recognises the existance of the display, but the screens stay black showing no input signal. It used to work properly.
I thought there was a trick to overcome this problem but couldnt find ithere
Any ideas?
Thanks

Try booting recovery mode.
Try booting from another OS installation or create a USB installer of 10.10 or an older OS (depending on what you have in the app store), http://diskmakerx.com makes that process easy.
If the screen works in any other OS you can start looking at your installed OS. If the screen never works under any OS you can start to look for hardware faults.
Also try Apple Hardware test.

NOTE:
Try all tests without any other displays connected.
P.S. I also suggest you create a new topic - this one can become closed at any point if the OP decides it is resolved - other users may ignore resolved topics. Link back to this one for reference.

  • Second display on my G5 tower is blurry...

I have a 2.0 GHZ G5 (graphics card is a GeForce 6800 Ultra) that I'm running with two displays connected. I have a Cinema HD display as the main display and a SyncMaster 206BW as the secondary display. The secondary display has two inputs, one for digital and one for analog video signals. Previously, I had the secondary display connected to the G5 with the digital input, and both displays had a very crisp and sharp appearance to the displayed images.
I have a MacBook that I have decided to connect to the secondary display. I did this by connecting the MacBook to the digital input, and by switching the G5 to the analog input using the DVI to VGA connector that shipped with the G5. Now I just toggle between the two sources on the display when I want to switch between computers.
Since making this change, I have noticed that the secondary display is kind of blurry or smeary (especially when displaying very contrasty objects, such as black text on a white background) when connected to the G5 in the analog mode (VGA). The display is still quite sharp when showing digital output from the MacBook.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening? Some adjustment that is out of whack on the G5 side? Or is it a difference between digital and analog signals that I can't do anything about?

    Hi-
You might have some luck with fine tuning the resolution and refresh rate using SwitchResX.
    http://www.madrau.com/indexSRX4.html
Anything other than the "optimal" settings as specified by the manufacturer can have issues.
As noted by DaddyPaycheck, analog can be "blurry" simply due to the conversion of the digital signal to analog.
Another factor is cabling, with low quality cabling being responsible for many viewing issues.

  • Can I use a Sony all-in-one PC/TV as a second display for the G5?

I'm trying to build a pro music system out of my G5, which means that it should only have music software on it. I have an aluminum 20" display hooked up to my Radeon x800T video card, which has one DVI and one ADC jack on it. A pro music rig needs two 20" displays, at least, to display all the mixers, processors, instruments, etc. I have to use a PC for my financial stuff and need a new one. The new Sony Vaio VGC-VA 11G is their version of the i-Mac G5, it's all-in-one plus it is a 20" LCD TV with S-video and composite video in, not VGA in. If I get an ADC-to-VGA adaptor and hook that up to a VGA-to-S/video & composite adapter (all on ebay!), can I plug the output of the G5 to one of the video ins on the Sony Vaio and then use the Sony Vaio's TV as the second display (not simply mirroring the Apple display)? I guess it would be the same as using an LCD TV as a second, non-mirroring display. If it works, it's going to be cool!

By reading the user's manual, it appears that is possible. Download the User Manual from this link:

With the computer off, turn on the monitor, button farthest to the right.
Next button to the left of the on/off button, controls the input. Cycle it until you see HDMI in.

  • Using my tv as a second display?

I have a few questions about adding a second display to my MBP.
    1. When adding this new display, will it display the exact same thing as on my MB or will it be an additional space?
    2. I decided to do this in the first place because I found a "monster" branded cable in officemax on a steal 80%off. It is branded for the Zune though. I noticed however on the display adapters for the MBP, there were similar inputs. It isn't working though.
3.When I plug the wire into the earphone jack, audio comes through my tv. The output next to it (on the left) I assumed was the display output and doesn't work. Is this the correct output or am I pushing my luck and should buy the proper cable?

    2. To connect a TV use the Apple DVI to TV adapter which has a S-Video or composite output suitable for a TV. Using a Monster Zune cable , small wonder it didn't work.
The other "output" is actually an audio line input. The video output is actually on the other side and is a DVI port to be used with the above adapter.
I presume this Zune thing has a plug like the size for a iPod or similar small earphone size with three conductors on it? Might work in an iPod but connecting it to a line in will never work. In this case the Zune-iness is not the problem vs. using the completely wrong connector.

  • Hi, I use BootCamp for my windows 7, I have a Macbook Pro 2012, and I want to use a second display, is this possible with my Mac using Windows?

I just dont see a port usable for a second screen. I want to hook it up to my TV to view photos and movies. What can I do?

What do you mean you don't see a port? Does your computer have a HDMI or a ThunderBolt/Mini Display port? You can use these to add a second display. Which one you use depends on what input ports your tv has.

  • Am I able to add a second display (LED TV) to my iMac via my network?

I have a 21.5 inch Late 2009 iMac (too old for Mirroring to Apple TV). I would like to be able to use my LED TV as a second display, so that effectively I can view non-iTunes media in my lounge room. I currently have the iMac connected to an Airport Extreme via Ethernet cable. I have an Airport Express also connected to the Extreme via Ethernet cable in Bridge Mode in the lounge room. I am wondering if it is possible to connect the TV via Ethernet cable to the Express (the TV has a network connection input), and then be able to use the TV as a second display for the iMac. I know I can do this if I connect the TV directly to the iMac via Ethernet, just am unable to determine if I can do it via the two Airport devices - I guess I am wanting to make the TV a "Network Display". I do also have an Apple TV connected via HDMI cable to that TV. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The easiest way would be to set up a seperate user account. That user would have their own iTunes with their own Library.

  • Can I add a second display to my iMac?

I would like to add a second display screen to my Mac. I have a spare VGA monitor.
(It is very usefl to be able to read on one screen and work on the other)
    Is it possible and how?

    Many thanks
Shows just about how much I know abnout technollogy.
The moitor also has a HDMI input. However I don't know which output on the back of the iMac to plug it into I alsl presume i will need an adaptor like the VGA one?

  • Second Display Quality Issue

I have a mid-2010 iMac 27" and it works wonderfully for me. I need a second monitor to place other applications on, so I grabbed an unused Asus VN247H monitor that my son was not using. It has a 24 or so inch display and accepts HDMI and VGA inputs. I purchased an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and connected the Asus to the back of the iMac. It works, but I'm underwhelmed by the quality I get on the Asus. Yeah, I know - it isn't a top-of-the-line monitor, and it is never gonna look as good as the iMac, but it isn't a $10 el cheapo, either. It is a good monitor and has a 1ms refresh rate. Anyway, no matter what resolution I try using, the output on that second display looks, well... crappy. The text letters are a little blurry, they are a lot larger than I figured they would be, and - I don't know - it just isn't what I was expecting. One thing I notice is that in the documentation for the monitor, it shows that I should be able to go up to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't the case. When I bring up the OS X System Preferences-->Displays, on the Asus VGA part it only shows a max setting of 1600 x 1200. I tried clicking that but the monitor complains and sez it's past the capability of itself. I am supposing it's because of having VGA instead of digital??
So, I've ordered the Apple Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter in hopes that an HDMI digital connection will give me better looking display and the full compliment of resolution options. Am I out in left field on this supposition? Or, is there some other thing I've not thought about in order to get a sharp looking second display?
    Thanks, Jim

Well, after four days, there have been a grand total of ZERO replies to this post / question. Either my question was lame, or no one else has run into a second monitor quality issue. At any rate, I'm answering my own posting - perhaps someone, somewhere might run into the issue and come across this information.
The answer to the question is: YES, changing to an HDMI connection between the iMac and the secondary monitor made a HUGE difference in quality. Why I went with a VGA adapter in the first place is unknown. But the HDMI connection is for sure the way to go. Colors look good, text is "almost" as good as on the iMac.
    Problem solved.

  • Samsung TV as second display

I have a late 2009 27inch iMac and I would like to use my Samsung TV (Model #UN32EH5000 32-Inch 1080p 60Hz LED TV) as a second display. The resolution on the Samsung TV is set to 1080p yet the picture is not as crisp as on my iMac Display. Any idea on how to fix this so that both screens are identical in image quality? There doesn't seem to be a "PC input" on the Samsung TV, just 2 HDMI ports.

  • Using Second Display

I am in the process of buying a flat panel LCD. It has a PC input. I was curious if it anybody knew if it was possible to use the flat panel as a secondary monitor. The trick is I'd like to use it wirelessly. Something as simple as sticking in a Wireless USB hub, and the Mac detecting it as a secondary monitor. (too simple for even the mac? =] )

    Hello,
The +iMac (Flat Panel)+ can use a second display via the MiniVGA connector but can only mirror the image of the internal display so if you have the 15" model you can only use a 1024x768 display. I don't think any of the USB/VGA adaptors are Mac compatible (or at least that I've seen).

  • Msi big bang xpower2 - only boots for 10 seconds, displays error b7

    Hey guys,
As the title states. I am getting 'b7' on the error display which i read somewhere means 'no input devices detected', can someone confirm this? I have tried turning on the PC with 1 GPU, 2 GPU, and no GPU in different configurations but I get the same error each time. It just boots for 10 seconds, displays 'b7' and then restarts and does it all over again. Help would be massively appreciated as I need this PC for work :(
    Thanks

More than likely it's  67 - Late CPU Initialization

  • 24" imac with second display that flickers on and off randomly

Hi, I'm a n00b here, I've read a handful of threads before posting this a I cant seem to find a definitive answer.
I have a 24" 2.4Ghz aluminium iMac and I've recently purchased a HP zr24w 24" IPS panel as a second display, connected with an apple miniDVI - DVI connector.
The screen flickers off, to totaly black every time the mac seems to be having a hard time doing something, be it fast scrolling, flash video, but someimes randomly.
I have boot camp installed with winblows vista (for work) the screen does EXACTLY the same thing, all be it less frequently. This for me rules out the Mac OS, i think it must be something video card/driver related.
Was there ever a fix for this? most of the threads seem to just die with no official answer, it would appear that MBP users were ok until the last 10.6.3 update, when the problem seems to have returned, although i think thats a different issue with the same net effect.
I have spoken to apple care and the very helpful girl I spoke to send me some logging software which I've run and sent the logs back, that may help them out someway.
Any help would be GREAT !!
    many thanks
    Michael

well, some time has passed, here's where I'm at so far.
I tried a friend's samsung 24" screen and all was good with the world, no flickering on and off, no black outs nothing, for days it was all fine. I swapped the HP monitor back on and it went right back to its old ways. I called HP tech support, they decided that the monitor was faulty, i returned it to where I got it from and they have sent me a new one. Which was fine, for about 7 hours!!
So, to recap, the mini-DVI to DVI adapter is fine as it worked on the samsung screen, the HP screen is brand new and exhibiting the exact same issue as the first one (cant be 2 faulty ones surely) The samsung screen was fine.
This leads me to think that there is some compatibility issue between the 24" imac and this particular (hp zr24w) monitor.
I have followed apple support's requests for data logging but they cant find anything wrong there.
I'm out of ideas, any help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!
    thanks
    Michael

  • My Mac Pro (2006) with NVidia GeForce 8800 GT is not detecting a second display.  What can I do?

My Mac Pro w/ NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT does not detect a second display from the System Preferences / Displays.  Even though I select the "Detect Displays" button, nothing happens.  I also have Bootcamp and Windows 7 in a partition on my drive.  When I operate with Windows 7, there is no problem detecting both of my displays.  However, when I operate with Windows 7, there is no sound signal sent from my sound card.  When I switch back to the OS X then I get a sound feed from the sound card, but then it will not detect more than one monitor.  I'm ready to pull out my hair.  Anyone have suggestions?

  • Using a second display

I just purchased a 15" Powerbook and have attached a 23" Cinema Display. I have several questions:
Is it possible to turn off the second display without physically detaching it from the PB?
Is it possible to turn off the PB screen and just use the second display? (I know about getting a second keyboard and keeping the PB closed.)
When I have the two displays in "mirror" mode, I am not getting a full screen on the second display when i use the highest resolution on the second display. Is there a way to correct this and still maintain the highest resolution on the second display?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi cerett --
I have to preface my responses by saying I don't have a second display attached to my PowerBook. That said, I think I can answer the first two of your three questions. Here goes:
    • Is it possible to turn off the second display without physically detaching it from the PB?
I think your 23" ACD has a power button, right? If so, why can't you just power down the ACD if you want to turn it off without physically detaching it from the PB.
Alternatively, and this also goes to my answer to your second question, you could turn down the brightness to the point where the screen is totally dark. Now, this doesn't seem like an ideal solution by any means, because you'd still have power running to the ACD for no reason, but it would seem to accomplish what you want anyway.
    • Is it possible to turn off the PB screen and just use the second display? (I know about getting a second keyboard and keeping the PB closed.)
You write that you already know how to use your PowerBook with the display closed. See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286 So, it sounds like you would like to leave your PB open, but just not have the display on. If so, it seems to me you could just decrease the brightness (using the F1 key or, of course, System Preferences > Displays > Display) to the maximum extent possible so that they display goes totally dark. May not be an ideal option (see above analysis), but it would seem that it should work for you.
Sorry, but I can't help with your third question. I'm not sure, but you might increase your chances of getting the information you need, if you reposted that third question in the Apple Cinema Displays forum, here -- http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=981 -- as the answer to this question may have more to do with the characteristics of the ACD than of the PB. I'd wait to see if someone comes along here first, and, if not, then repost there.
    Good luck.
