Second display on my G5 tower is blurry...

I have a 2.0 GHZ G5 (graphics card is a GeForce 6800 Ultra) that I'm running with two displays connected. I have a Cinema HD display as the main display and a SyncMaster 206BW as the secondary display. The secondary display has two inputs, one for digital and one for analog video signals. Previously, I had the secondary display connected to the G5 with the digital input, and both displays had a very crisp and sharp appearance to the displayed images.
I have a MacBook that I have decided to connect to the secondary display. I did this by connecting the MacBook to the digital input, and by switching the G5 to the analog input using the DVI to VGA connector that shipped with the G5. Now I just toggle between the two sources on the display when I want to switch between computers.
Since making this change, I have noticed that the secondary display is kind of blurry or smeary (especially when displaying very contrasty objects, such as black text on a white background) when connected to the G5 in the analog mode (VGA). The display is still quite sharp when showing digital output from the MacBook.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening? Some adjustment that is out of whack on the G5 side? Or is it a difference between digital and analog signals that I can't do anything about?

Hi-
You might have some luck with fine tuning the resolution and refresh rate using SwitchResX.
http://www.madrau.com/indexSRX4.html
Anything other than the "optimal" settings as specified by the manufacturer can have issues.
As noted by DaddyPaycheck, analog can be "blurry" simply due to the conversion of the digital signal to analog.
Another factor is cabling, with low quality cabling being responsible for many viewing issues.

  • Second Display Quality Issue

I have a mid-2010 iMac 27" and it works wonderfully for me. I need a second monitor to place other applications on, so I grabbed an unused Asus VN247H monitor that my son was not using. It has a 24 or so inch display and accepts HDMI and VGA inputs. I purchased an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and connected the Asus to the back of the iMac. It works, but I'm underwhelmed by the quality I get on the Asus. Yeah, I know - it isn't a top-of-the-line monitor, and it is never gonna look as good as the iMac, but it isn't a $10 el cheapo, either. It is a good monitor and has a 1ms refresh rate. Anyway, no matter what resolution I try using, the output on that second display looks, well... crappy. The text letters are a little blurry, they are a lot larger than I figured they would be, and - I don't know - it just isn't what I was expecting. One thing I notice is that in the documentation for the monitor, it shows that I should be able to go up to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't the case. When I bring up the OS X System Preferences-->Displays, on the Asus VGA part it only shows a max setting of 1600 x 1200. I tried clicking that but the monitor complains and sez it's past the capability of itself. I am supposing it's because of having VGA instead of digital??
So, I've ordered the Apple Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter in hopes that an HDMI digital connection will give me better looking display and the full compliment of resolution options. Am I out in left field on this supposition? Or, is there some other thing I've not thought about in order to get a sharp looking second display?
    Thanks, Jim

Well, after four days, there have been a grand total of ZERO replies to this post / question. Either my question was lame, or no one else has run into a second monitor quality issue. At any rate, I'm answering my own posting - perhaps someone, somewhere might run into the issue and come across this information.
The answer to the question is: YES, changing to an HDMI connection between the iMac and the secondary monitor made a HUGE difference in quality. Why I went with a VGA adapter in the first place is unknown. But the HDMI connection is for sure the way to go. Colors look good, text is "almost" as good as on the iMac.
    Problem solved.

  • What controls which screen is the 'Second Display

I have 4 screens on my mac
Two identical cards , each with two outputs.
3 monitors in panorama, with the 42 inch TV above the  three
Today when i started, I selected Windows | Show Event sonSecond display...the Events panel popped up on the big TV screen, not where I had expected it,on the LHS. So I though it may be because of the way the screens were plugged in to the machine, so I reconfigured, swapping the TV cable with the LH screen cable.
All worked all, for 8 -8 hours. with the events n the LH screen.
I have not touched the cables again.
Now I re boot the Mac ..and fire up FCP again...and the Events have gone back up to the TV screen.
Am I going to have to swap cables each time , I want to start FCP  or is there anther way?   maybe eFCP X is just not really designed for multiple screens I guess?
    Any hep appreciated
Google searches on this have come up fruitless yet again.

    Hi guys
yes arrangement in Sys preferences is correct,
    the mouse tracks across them
    all as expected.
this is a pre Thunderbolt machine,  2008 3.1 mac pro tower.
    Two identical Apple ATI 2600
    cards. Two DVI ports onbeach
It is weird and there does not seem to be any logic or reason to what happens.  I can swap the leads over, and each monitor in Sys Prefs keeps its place, desktop icons and backgroind maintain their corrrct arrsngement per monitor.  So LH desktop backgroind will stay on LH screen, no matter what port its cable is plugged into.
Yet, you do a reboot & swap a few minutes later and it is totally random in sys preferencex.
FCP X will seem to randomly choose any of the other screens as its second display..
I know with launching an app from Spotlight, the app tends to open in tjd screen where the mouse is active, no matter which screen Sotlight was launched from.
I have multiscreen setup as 'Spaces' so each has its own Dock and Taskbar.
THis machine has Mavericks 10.9.5 on.  I am quite scared to try Yosemite on it for fear of what else they have broken since 10.6.  Laptop has Yosemite on it but not mutlimonitor capable.
this is definetly an FCP X issue rather than OS related.  I can fire up Adobe Lightroom, and without fail it chooses the LH screen as its second monitor.
I Have a Premier Pro disk kicking aroind somewhere, may have to give that a try and see if that supports multi screen,

  • Loud noise due to second display

    Hi,
When I attach a second display, a 17" Studio Display (old design), to my MBP, I get a lot off loud noises (screetch, beeps, white noise like sounds...) through my external sprekers. They are active speakers connected to the headphone output of the MBP. Off course, whithout the second display there's no noise!
Any idea how this could be possible? Is it due to the ADC-DVI adapter?

It is possible that the adapter is somehow corrupting the audio signal, thereby distorting the sound. Try connecting a different set of speakers to your Mac to determine if it resolves the issue. Also, try moving the speakers a bit further away from the display to ensure that you’re not receiving feedback through the audio path.

  • Crome - stuck in full screen on Second display

    Hello
I am in need of some help here.
I have a dual screen set up
Main display - Apple 30" display
Second display - Apple 23" display
At one point I have enabled full screen mode with Google Crome on my 23" display and I can't get it out of Full Screen.
I have quit Crome and tried to start it holding down different keys - Command, option and also control, (alone not together)
No change, still runs full screen
    UGH - hate it.
I have tried 'esc' and the blue arrows in the upper right of the screen both did not help.
    Thanks

  • Msi big bang xpower2 - only boots for 10 seconds, displays error b7

    Hey guys,
As the title states. I am getting 'b7' on the error display which i read somewhere means 'no input devices detected', can someone confirm this? I have tried turning on the PC with 1 GPU, 2 GPU, and no GPU in different configurations but I get the same error each time. It just boots for 10 seconds, displays 'b7' and then restarts and does it all over again. Help would be massively appreciated as I need this PC for work :(

Nevermind I just installed it to try it and it's awesome, so happy right now, Thanks. All the things I had read about it on third party sites led me to believe it could not do extended desk tops, thanks for your help!

  • Is there a way to connect the Apple TV as a second display without it automatically changing my Mac's audio output?

Is there a way to connect the Apple TV as a second display without it automatically changing my Mac's audio output? I would prefer to use an audio interface for playback and the apple tv as a third display. I know I can go back to system preferences and swap my output back manually, but it is getting to be really inconvienient. Thoughts?

  • Using second display via eMac's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor

    Hi,
I've got a 19inch widescreen display from Acer, model no. AL1916W. I have apple's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor and have connected the second display to the point where it mirrors the screen on my eMac, however I don't want it to do this.
What I had intended is that the second display would act as an extension of my eMacs screen, so I can drag windows across for extra space. Is this possible with the eMac?
Put more specifically, I want to be able to put logic's main (arrange) window on the Acer widescreen, and then have whatever else on the eMacs screen? Is there a workaround to do this?
    help much appreciated,
    Toby

    Hi,
It's funny you should send me that link, I actually found that a couple of hours after posting this and tried it. It worked perfectly, I now have the widescreen running in it's native resolution and working as a separate screen which I can drag stuff in and out of. I came back on here to mark the question as 'answered' but I couldn't find how.
    thanks for your help,
    Toby

    Help me please

    Hi Tony,
I don't how these instructions are the same, here is what the article says:
    _Resetting PRAM and NVRAM_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.
Your original post said *"Restart the mac and depress the alt, command, P and R keys simultaneously. You should hear the boot chime. Keep the keys depressed until you hear the boot chime a further three times. On the final boot chime release the keys and let the mac boot normally."* How I understand your post that totals 4 chimes vs. the 2 Apple specifies. Am I missing something?

  • G5 Second Display using the GeForce FX 5200 - Non-Standard

    I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 Macintosh.
The display adapter installed is as follows:
    GeForce FX 5200:
    Chipset Model: GeForce FX 5200
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 64 MB
    Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0321
    Revision ID: 0x00a2
    ROM Revision: 2060
    Displays:
    VX2235wm-3:
    Resolution: 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Display:
    Status: No display connected
I want to attach a second display to my machine, but the second plug on the card is a non-standard DVI-type connector. It looks like this:
    x x x x x x x x x x -----
...with 10 rows of 3 as opposed to 8.
I have had trouble finding an adapter to use to convert this to VGA (which is what I meed to connect my second monitor). I've searched the Apple Store online to no avail, as well as Google. Perhaps I've had no luck because I don't know the name of this part.
    Any help is much appreciated!

Hello! Does the port look like the one below? If so you'll need an adapter. Tom
Actually, HERE is the page i was looking for that shows and describes all dvi connections.

  • Can I use a Sony all-in-one PC/TV as a second display for the G5?

I'm trying to build a pro music system out of my G5, which means that it should only have music software on it. I have an aluminum 20" display hooked up to my Radeon x800T video card, which has one DVI and one ADC jack on it. A pro music rig needs two 20" displays, at least, to display all the mixers, processors, instruments, etc. I have to use a PC for my financial stuff and need a new one. The new Sony Vaio VGC-VA 11G is their version of the i-Mac G5, it's all-in-one plus it is a 20" LCD TV with S-video and composite video in, not VGA in. If I get an ADC-to-VGA adaptor and hook that up to a VGA-to-S/video & composite adapter (all on ebay!), can I plug the output of the G5 to one of the video ins on the Sony Vaio and then use the Sony Vaio's TV as the second display (not simply mirroring the Apple display)? I guess it would be the same as using an LCD TV as a second, non-mirroring display. If it works, it's going to be cool!
Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   Dual 2 Gghz (not quad), 3 Megs Ram, ATI Radeon x800T 256

By reading the user's manual, it appears that is possible. Download the User Manual from this link:
    http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/ideacentre-b-series-all-in-ones/id...
    Chapter 1.1
With the computer off, turn on the monitor, button farthest to the right.
Next button to the left of the on/off button, controls the input. Cycle it until you see HDMI in.
I don't have B520, but I have an A310 and it works the same.  I hope that works for you.
    Good luck!

  • 24" imac with second display that flickers on and off randomly

Hi, I'm a n00b here, I've read a handful of threads before posting this a I cant seem to find a definitive answer.
I have a 24" 2.4Ghz aluminium iMac and I've recently purchased a HP zr24w 24" IPS panel as a second display, connected with an apple miniDVI - DVI connector.
The screen flickers off, to totaly black every time the mac seems to be having a hard time doing something, be it fast scrolling, flash video, but someimes randomly.
I have boot camp installed with winblows vista (for work) the screen does EXACTLY the same thing, all be it less frequently. This for me rules out the Mac OS, i think it must be something video card/driver related.
Was there ever a fix for this? most of the threads seem to just die with no official answer, it would appear that MBP users were ok until the last 10.6.3 update, when the problem seems to have returned, although i think thats a different issue with the same net effect.
I have spoken to apple care and the very helpful girl I spoke to send me some logging software which I've run and sent the logs back, that may help them out someway.
Any help would be GREAT !!
    many thanks
    Michael

well, some time has passed, here's where I'm at so far.
I tried a friend's samsung 24" screen and all was good with the world, no flickering on and off, no black outs nothing, for days it was all fine. I swapped the HP monitor back on and it went right back to its old ways. I called HP tech support, they decided that the monitor was faulty, i returned it to where I got it from and they have sent me a new one. Which was fine, for about 7 hours!!
So, to recap, the mini-DVI to DVI adapter is fine as it worked on the samsung screen, the HP screen is brand new and exhibiting the exact same issue as the first one (cant be 2 faulty ones surely) The samsung screen was fine.
This leads me to think that there is some compatibility issue between the 24" imac and this particular (hp zr24w) monitor.
I have followed apple support's requests for data logging but they cant find anything wrong there.
I'm out of ideas, any help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!
    thanks
    Michael
