Second Display Quality Issue

I have a mid-2010 iMac 27" and it works wonderfully for me. I need a second monitor to place other applications on, so I grabbed an unused Asus VN247H monitor that my son was not using. It has a 24 or so inch display and accepts HDMI and VGA inputs. I purchased an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and connected the Asus to the back of the iMac. It works, but I'm underwhelmed by the quality I get on the Asus. Yeah, I know - it isn't a top-of-the-line monitor, and it is never gonna look as good as the iMac, but it isn't a $10 el cheapo, either. It is a good monitor and has a 1ms refresh rate. Anyway, no matter what resolution I try using, the output on that second display looks, well... crappy. The text letters are a little blurry, they are a lot larger than I figured they would be, and - I don't know - it just isn't what I was expecting. One thing I notice is that in the documentation for the monitor, it shows that I should be able to go up to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't the case. When I bring up the OS X System Preferences-->Displays, on the Asus VGA part it only shows a max setting of 1600 x 1200. I tried clicking that but the monitor complains and sez it's past the capability of itself. I am supposing it's because of having VGA instead of digital??
So, I've ordered the Apple Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter in hopes that an HDMI digital connection will give me better looking display and the full compliment of resolution options. Am I out in left field on this supposition? Or, is there some other thing I've not thought about in order to get a sharp looking second display?
Thanks, Jim

Well, after four days, there have been a grand total of ZERO replies to this post / question. Either my question was lame, or no one else has run into a second monitor quality issue. At any rate, I'm answering my own posting - perhaps someone, somewhere might run into the issue and come across this information.
The answer to the question is: YES, changing to an HDMI connection between the iMac and the secondary monitor made a HUGE difference in quality. Why I went with a VGA adapter in the first place is unknown. But the HDMI connection is for sure the way to go. Colors look good, text is "almost" as good as on the iMac.
Problem solved.

    Hi,
I'd really appreciate someone's input here - this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131) guides you through using a macbook pro in closed clamshell with a second display - the trouble is that my machine goes straight back to sleep within seconds of me waking it up?? - I'm using the 'allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer' setting.
    Can you help?

  • Display Quality issue after updating to Bootcamp 3.1 (windows 7 64-bit)

I managed to install Windows 7 64-bit without issues (all issues got resolved after installing bootcamp 3.0 from the OSX DVD).
Then I saw the BootCamp update for windows 7 64-bit as being (Recommended) and I installed it...
after that I got a problem in the screen where I get low quality in gradient colors.
I tried installing the ATI Radeon 4850 Driver from the ATI website , but without any luck, the driver is identified correctly and color depth (32-bit) , but still the quality isn't acceptable.
Anyone facing similar issue? please advise ? I tried restore point but it failed.
    Any suggestions?

Are you sure? Since both CPU-Z 1.53.1 and Catalyst Control Center are stating that my graphic card is a ATI Radeon HD 4850 (device ID 944A).. :S
So, Bootcamp 3.1 seems to have solved nothing (plugging headphones in still

You could try to roll back the driver. I've more or less the instruction written in this thread and at the moment, with 8.661 version of the driver I don't have the color banding issue (I've to test stability yet, since it seems that this driver version is quite more unstable).
However, yeah I feel your disappointment, I'm a Mac user since 2001, changed several macs and this is the first one that comes with so much issues.

  • Should I get a 20" or a 24" Intel iMac (display quality issue)

    Hello everybody,
next week I'm going to buy a new iMac.
I was about to purchase the 20" but with 2,4GHz and the bigger graphic card.
Because I do a lot of graphic and video work.
Now I read that a lot of people seem to have problems with their 20" screen.
There should be a faded upper left corner (because of the hot HD). And the colors are different depending how you move your head. The upper part is much brighter than the lower part, and so on...
    Now my questions:
    - Does this affect only the first iMacs produced, or are the iMacs in the stores right now still affected?
    - Is the 20" with the bigger graphics card (same as the 24") has a better display behaviour?
    - Are there happy designers out there with a 20" iMac?
    - Or is a 24" the only solution for a graphci designer (I'm afraid it's to big for my table).
Any thoughts, suggestions, experiences are welcome,
    Jan

    Good Morning Jan,
Well, from a business standpoint I have just approved a final document which will add the Apple iMac 20" to our student-side standards list. What this means basically is that we've tested, extensively, the 20" iMac and found it's quality (as a whole) to be above and beyond what we normally receive from our other vendors.
One thing to keep in mind is that when you read the posts here things seem a lot worse than they are in the real world, this is because the Apple Discussion Forums are intended for support purposes so the majority of people posting here have a very specific problem. What isn't reflected here are those out there who have had no problems at all with the iMacs and are happy computing along and will for many years.
From a Graphic Design point of view I think you will be unhappy with both iMac models, sadly, due to the glossy screen which is more oriented towards consumers. You might give thought to a MacBook Pro with an external screen as an option as the specifications are virtually identical to that of the iMac, and it's portable!
    Hope this helps! 

  • Poor full screen display quality

I am in a dual-display environment. One display I have set up as a full-screen display for images as I edit them in Aperture. They show up in a dismally poor quality; a grid-like low resolution. When I zoom in on them, the issue goes away. It's just when an image is displayed in its entirety. This is a 20" Cinema display. Note that there is no display quality issue with Photoshop. Thanks.

Which picture is the refence picture?
I have been noticing that the same image in different programes does look different, colour and tone.. Now I understand that as each programe reads the data differently. BUT with Aperture I have noticed this is the case within aperture and this is crazy.
The photo is different in the loupe again different in the full frame version and yet again with in the grid. So when using the loupe is it possible to compare images enlarged from the grid and so on! and on. and the exported images look diferent again when viewed...
Strange as it is all on one monitor!
Or am I the only one to notice this?

  • Quality issues? Dirt behind the glass

    Hi there,
I have just returned yet another 27" Cinema Display to Amazon because of quality control issues at Apple it seems:
There was clearly visible *dirt behind the glass screen* (i. e. sitting directly on the LCD panel itself) - this seems to be limited to the right hand side of the display. This was the second display with gunk (some weird smear) in the top right hand corner, and dust in the lower right hand corner.
Anybody else experiencing problems with the build quality of the 27" displays?
    Regards from Berlin,
    jan

    Thanks Jan -
I had the same experience.  Amazon is awesome.  I told them there was dust under the glass - no problem.  They sent me a new monitor with 2-day shipping and without charging my card.  They gave me a UPS label and 30 days to return the old one.  Very professional, zero cost on my part.

  • 24" imac with second display that flickers on and off randomly

Hi, I'm a n00b here, I've read a handful of threads before posting this a I cant seem to find a definitive answer.
I have a 24" 2.4Ghz aluminium iMac and I've recently purchased a HP zr24w 24" IPS panel as a second display, connected with an apple miniDVI - DVI connector.
The screen flickers off, to totaly black every time the mac seems to be having a hard time doing something, be it fast scrolling, flash video, but someimes randomly.
I have boot camp installed with winblows vista (for work) the screen does EXACTLY the same thing, all be it less frequently. This for me rules out the Mac OS, i think it must be something video card/driver related.
Was there ever a fix for this? most of the threads seem to just die with no official answer, it would appear that MBP users were ok until the last 10.6.3 update, when the problem seems to have returned, although i think thats a different issue with the same net effect.
I have spoken to apple care and the very helpful girl I spoke to send me some logging software which I've run and sent the logs back, that may help them out someway.
Any help would be GREAT !!
    many thanks
    Michael

well, some time has passed, here's where I'm at so far.
I tried a friend's samsung 24" screen and all was good with the world, no flickering on and off, no black outs nothing, for days it was all fine. I swapped the HP monitor back on and it went right back to its old ways. I called HP tech support, they decided that the monitor was faulty, i returned it to where I got it from and they have sent me a new one. Which was fine, for about 7 hours!!
So, to recap, the mini-DVI to DVI adapter is fine as it worked on the samsung screen, the HP screen is brand new and exhibiting the exact same issue as the first one (cant be 2 faulty ones surely) The samsung screen was fine.
This leads me to think that there is some compatibility issue between the 24" imac and this particular (hp zr24w) monitor.
I have followed apple support's requests for data logging but they cant find anything wrong there.
I'm out of ideas, any help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!
    thanks

  • How do i add a second display desktop to my macbok

How do I add a second display (desktop) to my macbook pro so when I swipe, there are three screen options, the one for widgets, the main one and then another desktop?

Here are the specs for your Compaq Presario CQ5300F Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model supports one VGA output via nVidia GeForce 6150SE onboard integrated graphics. This model also has a PCIe x16 graphics card expansion slot which will accept a PCIe x16 graphics card. According to the specs, installing a discrete graphics card in the PCIe x16 slot will disable the onboard integrated graphics.
The graphics card you purchase must support both monitors you wish to use with your computer. Additionally, most retail graphics cards require a 300 watt or greater system power supply. Currently , your computer has a 250 watt power supply and it will need to be replaced. Please consider the Corsair CX430, CX500, or CX600 series of power supplies to meet the new graphics card power requirements.
Alternatively, if this is mostly for word docs, spreadsheets, day trading and light video, you may wish to consider a USB-to-video adapter such as the eVGA UV Plus+ UV39 or one of the many other adapters on the market.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Second display won't work on mac partition but works on windows

Hey I have a 21.5" imac from mid 2011 and have recently update to OS X Mavericks.
I bought a mini dp to hdmi to connect a second monitor up to my imac a month or so ago. At the time I was running 10.6.8 and thought that may be why it wasn't picking up the second display.
All the while the second monitor has been working fine on my windows 7 partition.
Hoping anyone can shed some light on this.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give

Long story short I solved the problem, and it was totally a model issue. It is the HP w2207, which apparently has a problem with iMac 24 inch, the nvidia graphics card, mini DVi to DVI and 10.4 in particular. You see these two devices, just don't get along very well. The imac tries to auto set the monitor at one resolutions and the monitor tries to auto set itself at another, and they will continue to do this indefinitely. However both when I switched to a VGA cable, which I believe prevents the monitor from auto setting itself, and when I upgraded to 10.5 solved the problem.
Personally I didn't mind the upgrade, as I was planning to do it anyway, and is definitely the better solution as there is noticeable difference in the color between the two cables.
Anyway thanks for the help everyone.

  • Samsung TV as second display

I have a late 2009 27inch iMac and I would like to use my Samsung TV (Model #UN32EH5000 32-Inch 1080p 60Hz LED TV) as a second display. The resolution on the Samsung TV is set to 1080p yet the picture is not as crisp as on my iMac Display. Any idea on how to fix this so that both screens are identical in image quality? There doesn't seem to be a "PC input" on the Samsung TV, just 2 HDMI ports.

  • Second Display flashing on and off randomly

Since upgrading to Lion, my second display (ViewSonic VX2235wm) flashes on and off frequently. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? This problem is with a second display hooked to my 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's driving me nuts!

I've since tried other resolutions and haven't found any others that are stable.  I've used the monitor with another system and had no problems and the problem started immediately after the Lion install, so the issue is clearly Lion-related.
I haven't heard of many people having this issue, so I'm contemplating upgrading the monitor to get around it. (Longterm, the 1360x768 solution is unacceptable to me as it stretches the image.) I think it may be specific to a few makes/models of monitors and possibly even to a graphics chip/monitor combo. I think if it were more general, there would be more noise about it: a two monitor set-up isn't uncommon.

  • Second Display as another Space

I just set up my 15" LCD TV as a second display on my mac. I was wondering if I can set the TV as a single Space in Spaces? Currently, in spaces it just attaches the second display onto the current space.
Here is what it currently looks like in spaces:

    Hi,
It looks like it would but that seems like it connects via ethernet and some people report colour issues. Is there no way of using the videoports or anything? I also use the ethernet port to connect to my Time Capsule.

  • Second Display

HP Pavilion 23T AIO - Windows 8.1 Pro
I see some settings for connecting and detecting a second display in the window 8.1 display settings.  There are multiple USB ports but no video out ports like HDMI or DisplayPort or DVI.  Is there an adaptor that will allow extended desktop to be used?

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number (p/n) of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom or back of your computer, or on the startup BIOS screen. DO NOT include your serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
Typically, HP All-in-One computers do not support video out of any kind (VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.). You will need to purchase a USB-to-video adapter such as the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39 or one of many other brands to connect an external display to your computer.

  • Second display causing perpetual restarting

For the last two years I have used my Mac Pro 2.8 Quad with two displays without any problems. A few weeks ago I had two blank screen after a restart which was only resolved after removing the second display. I changed the second display for a different one and the computer was working fine until yesterday. Now after restarting as normal both screens flicker and restart continuously. It is only when I remove the second display that my Mac Pro works normally. I really need two displays for my work. Any suggestions as to the problem please ?
