Second display via Thunderbolt "flashes" after EFI 1.7

I have a second display (Samsung SyncMaster 245BW) connected to my 27" iMac via Thunderbolt and a miniDisplay -> DVI connector.  I just recently got the 1.7 EFI software update and noticed that the second display will flash every 2 - 3 minutes.  Anyone else seeing this?  Should I revert back to the previous EFI?

KVM switches are either compatible with Macs or they are problematic at best.
I had a KVM here that when I switched to another screen/keyboard, the screen would stay black, until I disconnected and reconnected the Mac video cable. It was a PITA. Threw it in the trash eventually.
I now have a mini and a nettop Linux box, both connected to the same monitor with DVI and VGA respectively. The screens are switched with a button on the monitor. If I need a keyboard on the Linux box, I attach one, otherwise I ssh into it and use the Apple keyboard. There is a separate wireless USB mouse on the Linux box, as needed.

  • Using second display via eMac's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor

    Hi,
I've got a 19inch widescreen display from Acer, model no. AL1916W. I have apple's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor and have connected the second display to the point where it mirrors the screen on my eMac, however I don't want it to do this.
What I had intended is that the second display would act as an extension of my eMacs screen, so I can drag windows across for extra space. Is this possible with the eMac?
Put more specifically, I want to be able to put logic's main (arrange) window on the Acer widescreen, and then have whatever else on the eMacs screen? Is there a workaround to do this?
    help much appreciated,
    Toby

    Hi,
It's funny you should send me that link, I actually found that a couple of hours after posting this and tried it. It worked perfectly, I now have the widescreen running in it's native resolution and working as a separate screen which I can drag stuff in and out of. I came back on here to mark the question as 'answered' but I couldn't find how.
    thanks for your help,
    Toby

  • Using '09 iMac as Target Display via Thunderbolt Cable Fail

I have a peculiar situation that I hoping someone can decipher with certainty:
    I have a late 2009 iMac core i7, 27" running 10.9.1
I just received a Mac Pro - my plan was to use the iMac as a display for the Mac Pro at least for a while. I purchased a thunderbolt cable. I have connected the mac pro via thunderbolt cable to the mini display port on the iMac.
Unfortunately I simply cannot get CMD-F2 to work, or FN-CMD-F2 on the iMac. I have tried PRAM resets etc. The system does nothing when I hit those keys. I verified the mac pro is working via HDMI.
I am now wondering if I have the right cable. I understood thunderbolt and mini display port to be interchangeable and backward compatible so that my situation would work.
What am I missing? Thanks much, really would like to get this mac pro on screen without buying a new monitor!

I found that MDP iMac MUST use a MDP cable. Which of course is not as easy to come by as the thunderbolt which I picked up. Really annoying.

  • 27Inch iMac W/ 2-27inch LED Displays via Thunderbolt?

If I buy a 27inch iMac for web development, Will I be able to hook up 2-27inch Apple Cinema Displays to it via 2 Thunderbolt ports? I need 3 Flat screens total if possible.

Yes it will work. This is an answer from a Genius at the Apple Store in London:
I've contacted Engineering and they've informed me that daisy-chaining the new Cinema Display is possible up to two displays on 15-inch MacBook Pros, 17-inch MacBook Pros and iMacs. This, unfortunately, rules out the Mac mini as well as the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. The marketing material on the website will be updated soon to communicate this.

  • Mac mini - iMac-display via thunderbolt?

Is there any way to connect my mac mini to an iMac 21,5"-display with just a thunderbolt-cable between them? Both late 2011.

  • When I connect displays via Thunderbolt, Internet breaks

I just got a Macbook Pro, it's running 10.8.4 It has 2 thunderbolt ports.
I bought two thunderbolt-to-DVI adapters to connect to 2 displays.
    That all works great.
Problem is, with either of these displays connected to either thunderbolt port, I cannot access the internet!
If I unplug the displays, the internet works again.
It's not a problem with Wi-fi connection either - I remain connected to Wi-fi and I can use devices on my LAN just fine. I can even ping servers on the net from Terminal. But not one browser works. I tried Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
Any ideas how this is even possible or better yet, how to fix it?

With an Apple Support Sr. tech directing me over the phone, I actually:
    • Deactivated the Thunderbolt-Ethernet config option in System Prefs - Network
    • Reset the SMC & Restarted
    • Backed up and deleted the SystemPreferences & Restarted
The problem persists and is reproduceable on 2 different MacbookPros one Lion, one Mountain Lion.
I have an Apple Supprt case number now, and a Sr. Sr. Technical Engineer helping now and will update this ticket with solution(s) if any.
I'm going to try to change the channel on my router, per:

    and see if it helps.

  • Adding second display via mini display port

How do I add audio and video using mini display port and USB audio with HDMI connection at Home Theater Receiver from 2009 Mac-mini? DVI and optical audio outputs on Mac-mini used for primary display.

Assuming your receiver has a USB audio input, you would use an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and then a DVI to HDMI cable for the video and a USB cable for the audio. You would have to go into System Preferences/Sound and under the Output tab you would have to make a selection to direct which port to send audio out of.
As an alternative to the Apple adapter, there are also third-party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables that avoid any need for an adapter at all.

  • Second Display flashing on and off randomly

Since upgrading to Lion, my second display (ViewSonic VX2235wm) flashes on and off frequently. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? This problem is with a second display hooked to my 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's driving me nuts!

I've since tried other resolutions and haven't found any others that are stable.  I've used the monitor with another system and had no problems and the problem started immediately after the Lion install, so the issue is clearly Lion-related.
I haven't heard of many people having this issue, so I'm contemplating upgrading the monitor to get around it. (Longterm, the 1360x768 solution is unacceptable to me as it stretches the image.) I think it may be specific to a few makes/models of monitors and possibly even to a graphics chip/monitor combo. I think if it were more general, there would be more noise about it: a two monitor set-up isn't uncommon.

  • Change color on second display

    Hi folks,
I have some trouble setting up a different color on my second display.
I am using a mac mini (late 2012) with mountain lion.
My main display is plugged via hdmi and the second is via thunderbolt with a hdmi adapter.
So, when I open the color settings I see a color window on both displays. The problem is that if I change on the second screen the color profile it changes on my first screen.
I somehow think its because of that the other display is connected via thunderbolt.
The displays are both Samsung SyncMaster S22B350
Has anyone else had this issue before?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

Sorry, I don't have te luxury of 2 monitors anymor, hopefully some other helpers pipe in!

  • G4 AGP Graphics - 2nd display won't work after upgrading from os 10.2

I have a desktop G4 AGP Graphics with two displays. When I was running os 9-10.2, the second display worked fine, but after upgrading the os (now running 10.4), the second display still works, but has turned gray and pixelated.
When I take a screen shot, the picture shows that both displays appear clear (and in color).
Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any suggestions

so do you have 2 different video cards driving two different monitors? or is it One video card with 2 displays?
the info you listed isnt very detailed but it does tell me you got an ATI video card with 16MB VRAM.
I assume that thats the Stock AGP 2x graphics card that came the The PowerMac G4 AGP graphics model.
why is your display set to 8bit depth? a stock 2x AGP card with 16MB VRAM should be able to support 16bit or 24bit depth even at 1024 x 768 res.
the info says also Core image not support as well as Quartz Extreme no supported. Which is significant because it could be why the 2nd Monitor doesnt display properly with Tiger.
under 10.2 there were less stringent requirements for driving video.
OSX 10.4 Tiger is much more advanced OS and has higher graphics cards requirements now.
I could be wrong, but I think you may need a newer video card that supports Quartz Extreme and Core image.
hopefully someone else will run by this topic and offer some insight aside from my own.

  • Second Display Quality Issue

I have a mid-2010 iMac 27" and it works wonderfully for me. I need a second monitor to place other applications on, so I grabbed an unused Asus VN247H monitor that my son was not using. It has a 24 or so inch display and accepts HDMI and VGA inputs. I purchased an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and connected the Asus to the back of the iMac. It works, but I'm underwhelmed by the quality I get on the Asus. Yeah, I know - it isn't a top-of-the-line monitor, and it is never gonna look as good as the iMac, but it isn't a $10 el cheapo, either. It is a good monitor and has a 1ms refresh rate. Anyway, no matter what resolution I try using, the output on that second display looks, well... crappy. The text letters are a little blurry, they are a lot larger than I figured they would be, and - I don't know - it just isn't what I was expecting. One thing I notice is that in the documentation for the monitor, it shows that I should be able to go up to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't the case. When I bring up the OS X System Preferences-->Displays, on the Asus VGA part it only shows a max setting of 1600 x 1200. I tried clicking that but the monitor complains and sez it's past the capability of itself. I am supposing it's because of having VGA instead of digital??
So, I've ordered the Apple Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter in hopes that an HDMI digital connection will give me better looking display and the full compliment of resolution options. Am I out in left field on this supposition? Or, is there some other thing I've not thought about in order to get a sharp looking second display?
    Thanks, Jim

Well, after four days, there have been a grand total of ZERO replies to this post / question. Either my question was lame, or no one else has run into a second monitor quality issue. At any rate, I'm answering my own posting - perhaps someone, somewhere might run into the issue and come across this information.
The answer to the question is: YES, changing to an HDMI connection between the iMac and the secondary monitor made a HUGE difference in quality. Why I went with a VGA adapter in the first place is unknown. But the HDMI connection is for sure the way to go. Colors look good, text is "almost" as good as on the iMac.
    Problem solved.

  • Second display control & E-mail checking

Anyone got this feature to work.  If I try to initiate mail checking from the start menu, all programs, second display control, mail checking after filling in the panel it fails with a "failed to connect" message. Can find no help info for this feature. Anyone tried it with any success?

Fair enough, then how do I close out that last E-Mail from being displayed, without closing out the program?

  • Using Second Display

I am in the process of buying a flat panel LCD. It has a PC input. I was curious if it anybody knew if it was possible to use the flat panel as a secondary monitor. The trick is I'd like to use it wirelessly. Something as simple as sticking in a Wireless USB hub, and the Mac detecting it as a secondary monitor. (too simple for even the mac? =] )

    Hello,
The +iMac (Flat Panel)+ can use a second display via the MiniVGA connector but can only mirror the image of the internal display so if you have the 15" model you can only use a 1024x768 display. I don't think any of the USB/VGA adaptors are Mac compatible (or at least that I've seen).

  • Is it possible to connect a mac book pro via thunderbolt and a dvi switchbox (multiple computers) to a thunderbolt display?

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy a thunderbolt display.Since I have not only apple computers with a thunderbolt port I wonder if it's possible to connect my mac book pro via thunderbolt and a DVI switchbox via a "mini displayport to DVI connector" to the thunderbolt display at the same time. Thunderbolt is a bus architecture. Thus there must be an ingoing and an outgoing port on the display. The rearview of the display I've seen so far don't show this:
If this is not possible then I must question the market chances of this product. Seems as if the product marketing guys exaggerated the launch of the thunderbolt technology.

How to connect windows laptop (vga) to thunderbolt display?
AHHH??!!!!!!  Was that your original question??   I assumed you were trying to output FROM your computer (MacBook Pro w/ Thunderbolt) to the new display and then OUT to be the video source to a DVI switcher.
    MB Pro w/TB ---> TB Display ---> mDP-to-DVI adapter ---> DVI switcher
So it seems as if it's not possible to use the thunderbolt display with the mini display port adapter to DVI you've mentioned.
I did not understand that you were trying to use other PC's into a switcher and then THAT Video source to connect INTO the TB display.   If THAT is what you're trying to do, then NO....  You can NOT use the new TB Display to be used to display "FROM" a DVI switcher (and also can NOT be used to display from other Non-TB-Apple computers).
I've also called apple. The statement was that one needs a computer with osx 10.6.x in order to connect the thunderbolt display. That makes it impossible to hook a windows pc or older mac to the new and shiny thunderbolt display.
I wonder why apple doesn't state this in their technical descriptions...?
    -ais-swiss
Actually, the state that information all over the Tech Specs on the Apple Store website.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC914LL/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Here are two different statements from that webpage:
So yes.... other NON-Apple PC's (or non-TB devices) do Not have the Thunderbolt technology (hardware/software) to be able to communicate with the TB display or other TB devices.
