Second drives on Hyper-V guests failing suddenly

In past 2 months or so, we have lost 3-4 Hyper-V guest systems that had a second drive attached via the virtual SCSI adapter. Up until this time, these servers have run flawlessly for 3 years+. The drives appear on the host, but if you try to access
them, they tell you that the disk cannot be found. However, the .vhd is full size and sitting in the SharedCluster storage folder where they belong.
Even if I create a new server or drive from scratch, in short order the second drive becomes unusable, even if I create it as an IDE device instead of SCSI.
I have 2 host servers running 2008 R2 Enterprise connected to a Equallogics SAN via iSCSI in a 2 node cluster.
Oddly, the boot drives seem to not have any issues, on old or new servers. It's only the second drive. Very odd, and scary. Any ideas out there?

Please check the event log on each cluster node .
Have you restarted the cluster ?
Just one CSV ? I mean that the second drive and boot drive are not on the same LUN ?

I'm currently doing some virtualization experiments on my new server hardware. The host hardware is:
IBM x3650 M4
x2 Xeon E5-2609
32GB RAM
x2 480 GB SSDs
Server OS: Windows server 2012
I'd like to test some legacy app virtualization. I've configured a VM and have installed Windows server 2003. The install is done via DVD. The issue at hand is that after the initial installation, the server fails to boot. The VM goes into a reboot loop

If its relevant, the host is not yet activated license wise. I downloaded the demo version so I could test my idea before making a purchase to go ahead with full implementation.
As it stands right now I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. Many searches on google have not turned up any helpful info. Does anyone have any ideas?

2003/R2 should be with sp2 and max 2 virtual processors .

VSS timeouts on Hyper-V guest, Exchange Replication Service, CU5

I'm having a problem with a Hyper-V guest that is running Exchange 2013 CU5. I will say I have had issues with this VM since installing CU5.
Note: I am doing a backup from within the VM guest, not from the host.
The scheduled backup takes a long time to complete, an entire weekend to backup 150GB to an ISCSI disk. In addition the CPU time is very high (58%) while this is happening. Attempting to open the backup manager window consistently makes the CPU
time hit 99%. When this happens Outlook clients will fail. When backup manager opens it will continually say "Reading data; please wait..." If the backup manager happened to already been open, the backup job will say "Volume
1 0% of 4 volumes."
The processes taking up the CPU time are Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (24%), Microsoft Block level backup service (62%) and virtual disk service (12%). Memory use always hovers around 65%. If I attempt to kill the processes with
task manager, there is no change. If I use the kill executable it will say the process is not running. I cannot stop the corresponding service either. I cannot stop the backup. I cannot query vss writer status. I cannot restart
the ISCSI service (device in use.) Restarting the NAS that contains the ISCSI target does nothing. The only recourse is to restart the server.
If I restart the server and start a backup fairly soon after, the backup completes normally, in about an hour. During a normal backup CPU usage is at about 30%. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service runs at 0% CPU time as well as the virtual
disk service. The Microsoft Block Level Backup Engine runs at 10% CPU time. The scheduled backup is set to start at 9:30pm. I have also tried changing backup times. If I restart the server at 4 am and do not run a manual backup, the
scheduled backup performs poorly.

The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance 7a465f3f-25ba-45b2-952a-870a6ddc2f2b) failed with error 80070020 when preparing for a backup.
As you can see the errors happen almost immediately after the backup starts.
In addition the following VSSwriters show a last error "timed out"

I will add also the following issues I have been experiencing ever since installing CU5:
1 Version buckets threshold easy reached. Had to modify threshold and set limits on email size. Sometimes still happens.
2 After a restart of the server, the server may have no, or limited connection to the network. It may or may not have an exclamation point on the network icon. If there is no exclamation point, it can ping other network resources, but inbound requests
and pings, will fail. The event log shows that the network should be available while booting, but it's not since it cannot communicate with active directory. The fix for this is to disable/enable the network adapter and then all is well.
I really need some help figuring this out. Again, never had an issue with this server prior to Exchange 2013 CU5 being installed.

The reason I think it is Exchange related, is that from the error message it mentioned:
A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x00000000
And then it indicated it is "Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer".

It mentioned that with turned on Exchange writer, we will fail to do system state backup and Exchange backup at a same time:
The Exchange writer may cause conflicts with the information store backup feature of the Backup utility. The information store backup feature uses online streaming to back up the Exchange databases. If the Exchange writer is registered, the Backup utility
may log errors if you try to back up the system state and the Exchange information store at the same time. (For example, the Backup utility may log Event ID 8019.)
In order to confirm if it is the cause, please test to:
1. Create a backup-once task to backup only a simple file - this is a quick test to confirm if Windows Server Backup is fine or not.
2. A second backup-once task to do a system state backup without any exchange related information.
3. If both failed, please test to disable Exchange Writer and redo test 1&2.
It will take us some time on doing these tests. The reason is to figure out if it is Exchange related or not. I'll continue discuss with you if any new clue is found.

but no result :( (i mean all processes failed. They could not detect the drive).

On a Quantum hard disk drive - they were the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) hard drive provider for Apple, you will see three or four pairs of pins on the green circuit board. They are labled:
AO . .
A1 . .
A2 . .
If no pins are connected, you have SCSI ID Zero This was the standard setting from the factory.
If you short out the pins beside AO .__. , you have designated SCSI ID One.
If you short out the pins beside A1 .__. , you have designated SCSI ID Two.
If you short out the pins beside A2 .__. , you have designated SCSI ID Four.
These values can be added together to get other SCSI IDs. If you have a jumper beside AO AND A1, that will add up to SCSI ID Three.
Some of the quantum drives used tiny black plastic jumpers with tiny metal contacts. I have yet to find a store that sells the tiny ones. I get my larger jumpers from old PC motherboards that are being thrown away. A small piece of aluminum foil will work as a jumper in a pinch. Just make sure it soed not fall off and short something else out!

CD-ROM drives are set at the factory as ID 3. Internal drives are set at ID 0. I set my external SCSI drive at SCSI 1 so it does not conflict with the internal drive. Internal Zip drives are set at ID 5 and external Zip drives let you choose between 5 and 6. I set my burners at ID 4. Come up with a master plan for your devices like scanners and burners. Apple System Profiler will give you info on the device ID. If the computer fails to boot, turn off all but one SCSI device and make sure of its ID. Then check each subsequent device by powering up only one device at a time while booting from a CD at ID #3.

Installing second drive into PowerMac G5

Hi -
The motherboard on my PowerMac G5 recently failed (I know - it's a major bummer). The good news is that the hard drive is still in working order. I'm now borrowing the exact same computer from a friend and am wondering... can I take my original hard drive and install it into his computer as a second drive? Is there anything I need to do or be aware since both drives will have OSX on them? In other words, does the computer automatically know that the hard drive in slot 1 is the master drive?

Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
There actually won't be a jumper to configure "master" or "slave". You will need to boot the machine while holding down the "option" key. A screen will come up asking you which drive you would like to boot from. Select the correct drive.
You can then change the machine to permanently boot from the second drive via the Startup Disk System Preference.

How do you allocate storage from a second drive to a VM Template?

Hello everyone, new guy here trying to get my first Hyper-V + SCVMM deployment going smoothly.
So what I have running is:
Hyper-V on Server 2012
SCVMM on Server 2008 R2
Storage machine running Server 2012, connected to SCVMM via iSCSI
We are a group of technicians that want to be able to create our own virtual machines via SCVMM (we have this part working just fine!). We have templates for our VM's for Server 2008, 2012, Win 7, etc with their VHDx files created directly on the Hyper-V
server. What I WANT to do it allow the VHDx to be created as it is, but when the VM is spawned I want it to have a second drive that stores to the "Storage Machine".
I have no idea if this is something that is possible through System Center or Hyper-V. I have been researching for 3 days but have found no solution. I look to the experts for help.

We are running System Center 2012 (on Windows Server 2012 R2)
We are running Hyper-V 6.2 (on Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, not R2)
I'm going to look into System Center Orchestrator as I do not know my way around the SCVMM cmdlets.
Ultimately what we want is:
3-4 templates for different Operating Systems for easy deployment of test VM's
Each template would contain two seperate disks in the Hardware Configuration. One of these disks would be stored on the local storage of the machine running Hyper-V (it has a raid 10 totaling to 6.5TB), and the other disk we want to be stored on a
different storage machine. I connected this other storage machine to SCVMM via iSCSI but I cannot find any way to add the 2nd disk and have it specifically on the storage machine.
I hope I'm explaining it well enough. Do you have any pointers on where to start with the cmdlets? Or would it be better for someone with less experience to just use the dependency of Orchestrator?

Hyper-V guest machine unable to play or rip CDs

Hi,
I have a Windows 7 VM on which I would like to play and rip CDs. I defined the CD/DVD drive to point on the physical CD/DVD drive.
When I insert an audio CD, the VM detects the insertion but it is not able nor to play nor to rip files.
On VM I can correctly play MP3 and other media. Only physical audio CD cannot play.
Any suggestion on how to solve the problem?

I finally found the answer by myself. I start wondering what's the real added value of these forums, since more and more times we end users have to find the solution by ourselves.
To give some value to the time I spent, I would like to share the information.
Under Hyper-V on Wikipedia:
Limitations
Optical drives pass-through
Optical drives virtualized in the guest VM are read-only. Hyper-V does not support the host/root operating system's optical drives to pass-through in guest VMs. As a result, burning to discs,
audio CDs, video CD/DVD-Video playback are not supported. However a workaround exists using the iSCSI protocol. Setting up an iSCSI target on the host machine with the optical drive can then be talked to by the standard
Microsoft iSCSI initiator. Microsoft produces their own iSCSI Target software or alternative third party products can be used
Microsoft target cannot be used to virtualize burners as it does not even support pass-thru or partitions (old String Bean software target MS got in 2006 or so COULD do this), now only VHD and VHDXs on a formatted disks... And it never done any hardware
in pass-thru :) So only third-party software could be used. See:

That's a free product using OEM version of a StarWind (current V6 does not allow burners pass-thru in a free mode but in V8 we'll flex out this feature).

Reboot lafter 10.5.8 2@1TB drives - "Filesystem Verify or Repair failed".

BACKGROUND:
Ok so I upgraded (patched) Parallels a couple of days ago, but didn't reboot yet (I was busy). Then I see the auto update showing me 10.5.8 so I grab that and it's sitting there waiting for me to reboot.
I have 4 browsers open (not windows, browsers - firefox, camino, safari & flock) for about a total of 40-50 windows. parallels is open, excel and word are open and so is thunderbird, iPhoto and a few other random things including time machine (once open I tend not to shut them down). So the systems decides it's had enough and crashes hard (to reboot) it looks like it come sup clean except I get a message about one of my 1TB drives is unavailable but mounted so I can recover data.
I tried to run disk utility to get it back online but I get Invalid inode structure, "Filesystem Verify or Repair failed". I reboot, same. I shutdown, power off, the same. I try my 10.5.6 CD, the same.
I reboot again and go into disk utility and I try to repartition one of the failed drives (time machine drive) and that fails but it does mount the drive so I can read it.
I try to repair the other failed drive and in the meantime I get an external 1TB drive to see if I can recover the time machine data to an external location before I try to putz with it again.
QUESTION:
So anyway any ideas how to get these drives to come back up clean? I'm not so concerned with the data as I run multiple copies of the data across a NAS and two of the three drives. fsck is just not getting me ther as I can't reliably get the drives remounted.

Ok I tried to verify the two drives. One failed to umount (that's ok, more later) and the other umounted but failed to verify.
I attached an external 1TB drive. Formatted it and fired up Synk Pro. I dropped all of the directories from the failed disk into Synk and pointed it at the external drive.
I'm going to bed now and expect Synk to have copied my data from the failed drive by morning. If that all goes well then I'll grab another external drive adn see if on reboot the other disk comes up (it's the time machine disk). I'd like to recover all of that and then repartition the drive that is now working (kinda) and put the data back. I'll also grab a copy of DiskWarrior and see if I can get the second drive back online.

Moving Logic samples to second drive?

I would like to move my 'EXS Factory Samples', 'Impulse Responses' and ' Ultrabeat Samples' from the HD>Library>Application Support>Logic folder on my boot drive to a second internal drive.
How do I do this?
Can I do this by copying the files to the second drive and placing alieses in the original folder?

I'll go you one better:
Here is what I do. I have 2 identical Logic7 systems at home AND at work. Keeping plug-in presets, channel-strip settings etc synch'd on both sytems is a major pain....soooooo (you'll love this)
1) go to :User/Library/ApplicationSupport...Take the folder called "Logic" and copy that to your external drive.
2) Make an alias of the "Logic" folder in ApplicationSupport.
3) Delete the "real" Logic folder in ApplicationSupport
4) Rename the "Logic alias" folder, to "Logic"
that's it.......now, not only do your samples/instruments reside on an external drive, but so do plug-in presets,channelstrips, templates....everything.
For all you professional guys/gals with homestudio and work studios. This is it! totally worx.
I mean how often does it happen that you're at the home-studio.....got this great riff, but you can't load that one channel-strip that resides on the computer at work ?!
It suddenly dawned on me that if I can make an alias of EXSsamples folder, than why not the whole Logic folder? It worx ......So now I have this firewire drive that i take home at night, and the "Logic" folder lives on that. (naturally I have a back-up).....If you don't load Gigs of samples per session (us orchestral guys do), you could actually keep your "Logic" folder on a USB Keychain/Dongle drive, or on one of those new NanoPods...how tech is that;-)

New second drive getting disconnected often

Hi there,
I just added a second drive to my "mid-2011" Mac mini (Macmini5,1), it's a HGST Travelstar SATA III with 32MB cache, 1TB capacity, and 7200rpm drive. I formatted it and it worked okay for a few hours, and then it disappeared from the OS. This happened every couple of hours consistently. I've checked all the connections and they are secure. If I shutdown the machine and boot it back up, the drive shows up again. Looking at the system.log, here's what I found every time before it happened:
13281 Jun 22 21:32:12 macmini kernel[0]: Failed to issue COM RESET successfully after 3 attempts. Failing...
and then the device disappeared:
13282 Jun 22 21:32:12 macmini kernel[0]: disk1s2: no such device.
I've done a bit of searching about this, my only guess is that this version of Mac mini doesn't support SATA III, or the EFI version doesn't work with it. I don't have a Windows/DOS machine to run the Hitachi utility to force the drive's SATA setting to 1.5gb/s, which was one of the solution I found in some posts dated 2009.
I've tried:
- SMC reset
- took the machine apart and reassembled it many times to make sure everything's plugged in correctly, I can do it in under 2 minutes now
- I just tried reformatting the drive, doubt it would fix anything, but worth a try
I'd appreciate any insight on how to fix this, or maybe I should get a slower drive instead? Thanks!

It might just be going to sleep if you are not accessing it or using it as the Startup Drive.
If you are not using it as the Startup Disk, go to: Apple > System Preferences > Energy Saver and make sure that "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" is unchecked.
If you are not using it as your Startup Disk and would like to..? Which is what I would do, because the drive is faster than the stock drive.
Then you will want to set it's Partition Map Scheme to GUID Partition Table and the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which makes it a bootable drive, then either Install OS X on it or Clone a copy of your original Hard Drive to it.

PXE Boot a Hyper V Guest - Not receiving a DHCP IP Address

I am trying to PXE boot a Hyper V guest, but am not getting a DHCP IP Address. Eventually the DHCP query times out and loads into the guest OS I have manually installed. See the PXE Boot Screen below. When in the installed guest OS, I do receive
a DHCP IP address as shown below. I am utilizing the Legacy Network Driver. I don't think it is related to VLAN identifier, but tried with/without and still no go. Any ideas what could be preventing this? Please let me know.

A solution is provided in this thread. You may need to have a look on the steps below:
• PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received.
The client did not receive any valid DHCP, BOOTP or proxyDHCP offers. To resolve this issue, check each of the following network configuration items:
DHCP services are not available on the network to which the PXE-enabled NIC is connected.
A DHCP proxy or IP helper address is not configured for the subnet on which the PXE client is connected.
The switch port connected to the PXE NIC is running Spanning Tree Protocol, EtherChannel Protocol, or Port Aggregation Protocol and is thus not activated immediately when a link is detected. This forces the DHCP request from the PXE client to timeout.
DHCP is available on the network, but PXE is not.
The network cable is not attached to the PXE-enabled NIC on the target server.

Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
