Second ethernet interface ni a cache engine
I'm trying to configure the second ethernet interface
in a CE 505, version 2.51
a "show hardware" command shows 2 ethernet interfaces, but when I go into configuration
mode and try to set any parameter in the second
interface, I get the error:
"configure interface 1 denied"
Thanks for any clue.
Hi
On a CE-505 you cannot use the second interface. This is a limitaion of the software on the device. Only if you had a content engine running version 3.x or 4.x can you use the second interface.

Using TCP on the second ethernet interface
Hello,
I'm using a PXI 8109 running Pharlap.
I'm trying to use the second ethernet interface of my PXI to send UDP and TCP packets. The primary interface is used to manage Veristand Channels.
Here is the configuration of my two ethernet interfaces:
- eth0 (primary):
IP : 10.0.0.3
subnet mask : 255.0.0.0
- eth1 :
IP : 192.168.10.9
subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
For UDP, I have no problems, packets are sent to the second interface as I want. I think it work because there is a "network address" input on the "UDP Open" VI so the system can choose the right interface.
For TCP, I use the "TCP Open a connection" VI but there is no this kind of input. And it is not working : I assume the system is trying to use the primary interface but it can't route packets...
For information, my two networks are physically independant.
Can you help me finding out what's going on ? Is it possible to use TCP on the second ethernet interface ?
Many thanks,
Regards,
Laurent

Automatically starting DHCP on second ethernet interface in Solaris 8?
Hello,
In my current setup, I have a Solaris 8 server with two ethernet interfaces - elxl0, which is connected to my internal network and has a static IP, and elxl1, which is connected to a cable modem and gets its address via DHCP.
When I reboot the machine, it brings both interfaces up, but does not start DHCP on elxl1 automatically. I have an empty /etc/hostname.elxl1, which I thought was supposed to tell the OS to use DHCP for that interface. I have to manually tell the interface to get an address using ifconfig auto-dhcp start.
Is there a way to tell the OS to use DHCP for elxl1 without disturbing elxl0? It would make things significantly more convenient for me, since now I have to manually start DHCP, and then reload my IP Filter NAT rules.
Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
- Brad WilliamsI figured it out.
What you have to do is add a file, /etc/dhcp.<interface>, in order to make this work. In my example, the file would be "/etc/dhcp.elxl1". -
Nexus 5000 - Odd Ethernet interface behavior (link down inactive)
Hi Guys,
This would sound really trivial but it is very odd behavior.
- We have a server connected to a 2, Nexus 5000s (for resiliancy)
- When there is no config on the ethernet interfaces whatsoever, the ethernet interface is UP / UP, there is minimal amount of traffic on the link etc. E.g.

- This behavior is seen on both 5Ks
- I've tried using a different set of ports, changed SFPs, and fibre cabling to no avail
- I can't seem to understand this behavior?! In that, why would configuring the port cause the link to go down?
- If anyone has experience this before, or could shed some light on this behavior, it would be appreciated.

SheldonI had identical issue
Two interfaces on two different FEXes were INACTIVE. I have two Nexus 5596 in vPC and A/A FEXes.
I also use config-sync feature.
Very same configuration was applied to other ports on other FEXes and they were working with no problems.
interface Ethernet119/1/1
inherit port-profile PP-Exchange2003
I checked VLAN status associated with this profile and it was active (of course it was, other ports were ok).
I solved it by removing port profile from this port and re-applied it... voila, port changed state to up!
Very very strange. -

FieldPoint real-time controller or Ethernet interface
Good Afternoon,
The first feature listed on the FP-2000 product page is:
Stand-alone embedded real-time controller or Ethernet interface for PC-based distributed I/O.
Has anybody successfully implented a FP-2000 as an Ethernet interface for PC-based distributed I/O? In other words, have the FP-2000 act like a FP-1600?
There are some discussion forum threads that dance around the subject but I have not found one that really answers it.
Thanks,
Ed
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi edlad,
After playing around with a FP-2010 for a while, I do believe that you need to install LabVIEW Real-Time on the controller in order for it to work, even if you are technically not using it because you are not running a VI/executable on the controller. As far as your issue with installing LabVIEW 8.5.1 on a FP-2000, that is troubling because there should not be an issue doing this at all. In fact, I have personally been able to install LabVIEW 8.5.1 on many FP-2000s. For that issue, I would suggest reformatting the FP-2000 from MAX and try again.
ThinkG: Regarding your question about using a cFP-2220 to communicate with Lookout, I am not sure because Lookout support is handled by our Shanghai branch via email only. However, I do know that you can use that second ethernet port to communicate with another FieldPoint network module (cFP-180x) using the FieldPoint drivers. Here are a couple good KnowledgeBase articles regarding that configuration. I hope they are helpful.

ACE as cache engine for wccp redirection
Does anybody know if the ACE 4710 appliance supports WCCP acting as a web-cache engine? I am exausting all possible options, and then some, for deploying a new application networking environment. I just returned from ACE training last week and found myself ramping up to deploy a new ACE.
I have pretty much exhausted my options for topology. We discussed several different designs in class and I don't like any of them. I have some serious problems with using the ACE as a default-gateway for servers. That options is out due to how other "non application" traffic is handled. Traffic such as RDP from IT support staff, patching from SMS servers, virus dat updates, vulnerability scanning... it all routes to the ACE which has to have static routes... then clients hitting the application VIPs have to be natted so the ACE does not use the static routes and reply directly... it all becomes a very big problem over time.
Second and third options are one-armed and direct server return... both not suitable for my requirements.
Now... that leaves me with an option we currently have deployed. That is to use a distribution route-switch (Catalyst 4500 Sup-IV) in the middle. The Cat uses PBR to return http traffic from the web servers back to the ACE. All other traffic follows normal routing table.
Ok... that works perfect... except PBR is not supported in the Sup-6 engine. Unbelievable... I know. This is a major fly in the ointment for this new deployment.
Now... there is another protocol that is often used for redirection... WCCP. If the ACE were a wccp web-cache, the router could be configured to redirect ingress http to the ACE. But... the ACE would have to act as a web-cache engine and register with the Cat as a home-router.
I am sure this option is not an option... but it would be nice. The ACE 4710 appliance has the general processor to do it but it would have to be implemented in software. I'm running A3(1.0) and I cannot find anything related to wccp. Nothing in the command-reference.
If there are any Cisco developers interested in adding some killer funtionality... this would be it. Wccp can be done in layer-2 as well as layer-3. The Sup-6 supports layer-2 redirection. Since the ACE is generally layer-2 adjacent this would be rather easy to implement. Anyway... food for thought.I just would like to mention that you could have ACE in bridge mode inserted between your servers and the gateway (4500).
All traffic will go through ACE but no need for nating and no statc routes (just one default route pointing to the 4500).
The only problems would be if you exceed the BW of the 4710 with all your traffic.
Regarding the WCCP support for the 4710 this is not currently in our roadmap.
Ask your cisco account team to introduce the request.
Thanks,
Gilles. -
CRS-1 8-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module
How much is the back plane speed for a line card on CRS-1? Does using a 8-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module in CRS-1 have an oversubscription of 2:1, like the WS-X6708 in 7209 chassis?
ThanksHello Jenny,
yes from datasheet it looks like so
see
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/routers/ps5763/ps5862/product_data_sheet09186a008022d5e9.html
or
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps5763/ps5862/product_data_sheet09186a008022d5e9.html
it talks of a 40 Gbps forwarding engine
described here:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/routers/ps5763/data_sheet_c78-553673.html
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps5763/data_sheet_c78-553673.html
so depending on applications you may prefer a 4 10GE linecard
Hope to help

[SOLVED] Bring up ethernet interface without connection
I have two ethernet interfaces in my computer. eth0 connects to the router for the internet, I'm not concerned about that. eth1 I use sometimes to plug a laptop into, and sometimes a MS Windows games PC. Most of the time I don't use it, and there's nothing plugged into it.
I have
NETWORKS=(eth0 eth1)
in rc.conf, and this in /etc/network.d/eth1:
CONNECTION='ethernet'
DESCRIPTION='Internal network'
INTERFACE='eth1'
IP='static'
ADDR='192.168.1.1'
At first boot, there's usually nothing plugged in to eth1, so the 'eth1' profile fails to start:
> sudo netcfg eth1
:: eth1 up [BUSY] > No connection
[FAIL]
> ip addr show eth1
3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN qlen 1000
link/ether 00:1b:ee:00:fe:d6 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
Why won't it start up eth1? I want it to give eth1 the IP of 192.168.1.1, even though there's no cable in it. This causes a problem when, after starting the main PC, I plug in a cable to eth1 and start a device (eg. laptop). I have to plug it in, start up the device (which is set to get a DHCP IP from my computer), manually start up eth1 on the PC, then rerun the connect command from the device.

Ethernet interface won't go up?
Hello!
I've been using my Arch-box as a router (among other things) for a while now.
It has 2 Ethernet interfaces (wan_eth0, lan_eth0) and 1 Wireless interface (lan_wifi0); One of the Ethernet interfaces connects to the internet, while the other can't seem to connect to anything at all.
The Wifi is excellent, but works as a bottleneck. I'm not super-experienced with Arch/Linux but I've used it (somewhat passively) for several years, but I haven't been able to figure out what's wrong with the interface despite several attempts. A recent update forced me to reconfigure the network settings (adding a bridge interface, lan_br0), which prompted me to try again, but I haven't gotten anywhere.
I use udev to change the interfaces' names, netctl to create the bridge interface, hostapd to host the Wifi AP, iptables is properly configured for NAT, dhcpd listens to the server's LAN IP (assigned to the bridge interface), and dhcpcd runs on the external interface.

The external interface (wan_eth0) uses the same kernel driver/module as lan_eth0 (the one that isn't working).
I have a working cable connecting lan_eth0 to one of my PCs.
Unfortunately I can't try the lan_eth0 device in another computer, nor connect it to another computer than it's already connected to.
Thanks for any help!rebootl wrote:

I have a working cable connecting lan_eth0 to one of my PCs.
Usually you would have a switch or hub in between there (?). I'm not really up to date on this but I think, earlier when not using a switch/hub you would have needed a cross-over cable to do this. A few searches on google reveal that this may not be needed anymore. Depending on how old your network card is...
The wiki says "Note: If one of the two computers has a gigabit ethernet card, a crossover cable is not necessary and a regular ethernet cable should be enough".
Also it seems that you can check using e.g. ethtool looking for Auto-negotiation.
1) The connection itself has never worked, but the cable is as good as new and should be working.
2) The Arch box (which has lan_eth0) is supposed to act as a hub (or a router specifically), though it only has two ethernet interfaces (lan_eth0 & wan_eth0) and one Wifi (lan_wifi0). The wifi works fine.
It seems I haven't been using a crossover cable, though. I read up on it a little and apparently if the colors of the pins on the ends of a cable are in the same order, they're "regular" aka "patch" cables. I have a few cables with differently ordered pins, but they're marked "patch cable", and either way I'm pretty sure they don't work.
Also, apparently if the network card has "Auto-MDIX", it doesn't matter what kind of cable you're using, which is probably what the wiki note refers to. I don't know how to check if my card has that, I'm going to google it now.
I'm not familiar with ethtool, but it appears I can't get much information about lan_eth0? I understand that much of the information would only be available when the interface is up, but shouldn't there be more than this?

Not sure if any of the above helps at all, apart from how little information there is I don't notice anything wrong. Anyway it seems auto-negotiation is enabled (as it should?).
UPDATE:
According to this webpage my card does not have Auto-MDI, so I -must- use a crossover cable. I'll try it and see if I notice any difference.

Streaming WMT (netshow) through PIX with Cache Engine
Hello:
I am trying to stream WMT from a pre-loaded Cache engine through a PIX firewall. I would like to use UDP for the streaming, but when I start the streaming TCP is selected by default. Forcing UDP within Windows causes an error. The PIX doesn't allow the UDP traffic through since it didn't originate from the inside. Outside the firewall UDP only works if I force it. TCP is the default. First, is UDP the best way to do this or is TCP ok since it is comming from the Cache engine? Second, how can I change the Cache engine setup to default to UDP or is this not possible?
Thank you,
Hampton Saussy
Midlands Technical CollegeWe had a similar issue. If the firewall is not configured to accept TCP ports, then the streaming video server will perform HTTP cloaking i.e Instead of using the TCP ports it will use HTTP port 80 to get through the firewall, then the server sends the streaming video data via UDP. If UDP cannot pass through the firewall, the client requests delivery via TCP. The fixup rtsp command lets PIX Firewall pass RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) packets. This command does not fix RTSP UDP connections. So I guess using TCP is a better option.

Logical ethernet interface routing
Is there a way to configure a default route to a logical ethernet interface, another one that isn't of the physical unit? I.e., to have different default routes to hme0 and hme0:1?
Hi radhika,
Logical routing determines the logical receiver(s) for a given logical sender.
Logical routing comprises the following two steps:
Receiver determination during which you assign a receiver system to the sender interface of a sender.
Interface determination during which you specify a receiver interface in the receiver system.
Technical Routing is a Processing step of the Integration Engine that determines physical addresses of logical receivers.
The physical address (end point) of the required receiver is retrieved from the Integration Directory.
Both can be monitored in IE(ABAP) - SXMB_MONI.
Thanks,

Would a cache engine cache an incomplete file download ?
Hello,
I recently tried to download a large file from the internet and half way through
I cancelled it. Later on I downloaded the file again, can anyone tell me if part of
the file was cached and I received that the second time or was it a new download ?
Thanks in advance
DarrenWhen an object is requested, the Cache Engine checks if it has a copy of the requested object in storage. If it has it the Cache Engine sends the user the object. Otherwise, the Cache Engine gets the requested objects from the web server, stores a copy of the objects (caches them), and simultaneously forwards the objects on to the user.
So I think that the part of the download before you cancelled it, should have been served from the cache.
You may however confirm this using the Squid log and check if it is a HIT.
The following doc gives you details on the log analysis.

How to Integrate 500 Series Cache Engine with WS-C3550-48-EMI
We are having a Catalyst 3550 L3 Switch, which is being used to provide Internet service. Now we want to integrate a 500 Series Cache Engine so that outbound http traffic is cached.
The Cat 3550-48-EMI switch is not supporting " ip wccp web-cache redirect out" command, instead it's supporting " ip wccp web-cache redirect in" command. So for outbound traffic no caching is happening. How this can be achieved?
Regards,
Malay.in and out means catch traffic when it comes in or when it goes out respectively.
So you can configure the 'out' on the Internet facing interface to catch the request before it goes out to the Internet.
But you can also configure the 'in' on the client interface to catch the request when it comes into the router.
The 'in' gives much better performance because you catch the request before doing a route loockup.
The only disadvantage is that if you have many client vlans, you need to configure this 'in' command for each one of them.

ECDN-to-ACNS or ECDN-to-Cache Engine
How can i up/downgrade ECDN-to-ACNS or ECDN-to-Cache Engine?
I would like to use CE507 for Cache Engine.
So I tried to find how to do, I found some documents.
The document sait that if i want to upgrade from ECDN to Cache Engien, I should use "ECDN-TO-ACNS-4.1.1-K9.mata" and "ECDN-TO-ACNS-4.1.1-K9.upg".
But I counldn't fine these files in the Software download homepage.
How can i accomplish that?Hi
It looks like its attempting to run the Ruby process, If you dig deep on CCO there is a document entitled performing an ECDN upgrade on 4.x software manually, basically it takes you through the steps of mounting up the linux partitions and running the processes manually from within the linux operating system under ECDN. I found from experience it does only work with the version of ECDN specified in the document, it makes a lot of references to this process known as RUBY which from what i've seen *I think* is the actual upgrade of software and disk partitions from 2.X/3.x to version 4.x.
Looking at the error message it looks like it may be trying to perform that upgrade process but disk 00 (first HD) is faulty so as Joerg explains it can't complete the process.
I can think of two things I'd probably try and do, the first is take out the first disk and put the second disk into the first slot (if you have a second disk). The other option if you get the chance is to use the recovery image option and pick a 4.X .sysimg file and try the recovery procedure).
It still may not work if you have a faulty disk because it can't repartition it, its probably not supported but the CE disks in a 507 are just standard IBM 18GB hotswap drives in Cisco rails if that ever becomes an option.
For info I did some upgrades on 507's with only one disk, you install the 2nd disk in and boot the CE up and can then see the extra space on the CE without having to do anything special, you would still need to create the partitions though as you have 18GB of unused space added. I only mention this as its the basis for my theory on being able to swap the drives around.
regards
Mark
