Second Gen iPod won't restore or update

I have what I think is a second generation iPod. It's 10 GB with the four round buttons under the display. It has worked flawlessly up until now. The battery was replaced about 3 months ago.
I connected the ipod two nights ago to update my podcasts and the iPod started performing what looked like a disk scan and put itself into disk mode. I did not change any of my settings in iTunes (v 7.1.1, I believe). To my knowledge, the iPod has not been damaged or abused.
Since then, I have been unable to get the iPod to update or restore. I did a restore and added all my music back onto the iPod but the iPod remains stuck in disk mode. I attempted to update to iPod software version 2.3 after the restore but I continue to get a message saying I have connected a disk the Mac can't recognize and it takes me into the Disk Utility program, which is unable to solve the problem.
I have received error messages 1453 and 1417 when I try to update the iPod software but have had no luck solving the problem by tracking those codes.
When the iPod is connected, iTunes displays "N/A" in the iPod fields for serial number and software version. This tells me there is probably something seriously wrong with my beloved iPod.
I have tried the factory suggestions for resetting the iPod numerous times, to no avail. I updated iTunes to version 7.3 hoping that would help, but the iPod is still not working.
Any ideas?
I'd appreciate any help or feedback any of you can provide.
Thanks,
Scott

I'm having the same sorts of problems -- and I think it is related to either quicktime or 10.3.9 --
I could neither update nor restore and after reformatting and erasing the iPod HD, (on a machine running 10.4.x -- the 'restore' function is grayed out when using the current version of iTunes on my 10.3.9 machine!) I'm STILL getting messages to the effect that 'some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied ... because the iPod Software is too old.'
Bottom line, Altho the machine would eventually allow reformatting, I STILL can't copy my playlists from my 10.3.9 machine onto the iPod. Is there a 'known bug' that is being worked on here, or am I doing something wrong?
Things I've tried:
1) downgrading to earlier versions of iTunes (did nothing, so I re-upgraded)
2) Erased iPod HD with Disk Utility on 10.3.9 machine (iTunes would still not allow 'restore')
3) Connected to 10.4.x machine, 'restore' function of iTunes worked!
4) Reconnected to 10.3.9 machine and received error message listed above -- some files appear to transfer, but nothing shows up in playlists or music menus of the iPod after syncing -- either manually or automagically.
5) Searched for ideas here and found nothing pertinent!
Help? .... Thanks!

  • Ipod Won't Restore or Update Music. Help!

    Hey All,
I just bought my ipod last night and i connected it and everything was fine. I noticed my first issue this morning when i was looking at it, my 160 GB ipod only had 120 MB of free memory on it and i only put 31 GB of tunes on it. My other problem which is more important at the moment is when i connect my ipod to my computer the computer tells me it needs to be restored. But when i try to restore it i get this error message "Ipod could not be restored for unknown error (1413)" Can Anyone help me please?

I assume you have tried to manually restart your ipod by switching the hold button on and off and then immediately pressing the menu and center button simultaneously while it is unplugged from you computer. This might help. Also make sure you have the most current version of itunes.
Also, is your ipod on manual or auto sync?
If that doesn't work your best bet is to call apple and tell them what happened... They'll be able to give you an idea as far as what that error code means and if it can be solved on your end. good luck.

  • HT1353 how do i update a second gen ipod touch

how do i update a second gen ipod touch

If you have iOS 4.2 that's as far as it will go. You need a newer iPod if you want a newer iOS version.

  • HT1339 My ipod won't restore. It keeps coming up with an error message.

My ipod won't restore. It keeps coming up with an error message. that says "The iPod '_____' cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application." How do I fix this?
The only thing that's open is my itunes, so i don't see how anything on my iPod can be in use by another application.
It also does this when I try to eject it, so I end up having to just unplug it instead of ejecting it, which I know is not good.
And if it matters, sometimes I plug in my iPod and it doesn't register on either the iPod or in iTunes that my iPod is plugged in, so sometimes I have to re-plug it in. And my iPod these days will continue to say that it's syncing even though iTunes will say it's finished.
    Please help me!

Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting.  If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.
Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and download ProcessExplorer.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665 and follow the instructions under Resolution.
Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.
In my case an update to RealPlayer installed a program called RecordingManager that was accessing my iPod.

  • IPod Won't Restore Error 3194

The iPod won't restore an when i try to restore my iPod in comes up with the Error 3194, from what i can call the error apppears when it says verfiying with apple i have tried changing host, no luck.

This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.
Error 3194: Resolve error 3194 by updating to the latest version of iTunes. "This device is not eligible for the requested build" in the updater logs confirms this is the root of the issue. For more Error 3194 steps see: This device is not eligible for the requested build above.

  • HT4623 i think i got the 1st or 2nd gen ipod touch how do you update it??

i think i got the 1st or 2nd gen ipod touch how do i update it?

    To update
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes
iTunes 10 for Windows: Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
A 1G iPod can go to iOS 3.1.3
A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. That requires a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 or later. With 1OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1

I have tried to clear temp folder, uninstalled, and reinstalled itunes version 10.5.1.42... ipod touch 4th gen is seen fine. But when I eject this and plug in my old shuffle... itunes still reports it as ipod touch.

The only suggestion I have is to try and rename your device in iTunes to something else by clicking it's current name from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and typing in a new one.

  • Help!!! ipod won't restore on itunes

my ipod won't restore on itunes because it says this check your network connections are connected and your network connection is active or try again later. i have no idea what this means and i have tried again later and it hasn't worked. also if i can restore can i get my things back? thanks

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
    - Then try on another computer
You can restore from backup to get things back
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • IPod Classic [Error 1439] - iPod won't restore

My iPod Classic was working fine until yesterday when I plugged it in to update my iTunes library.  iTunes said the iPod was corrupted and I must restore it and lose all data loaded onto it. That seemed bad enough, but then the restore failed and I got this message about Error 1439. I looked this up and it was on a page with lots of other error codes, I tried all the steps recommended and it has got me nowhere. So now I've got an iPod that when it is unplugged says it has zero songs on it but in terms of the space available it says it is full.  When I plug it in it isn't recognised in My Computer and iTunes only recognises it initially when I plug it in with the restore screen I've already mentioned that features the restore button that leads straight back to the Error 1439 message - after that the iPod disappears from iTunes completely and you can't even eject it because there is no recognition that it is plugged in at all. Following the steps recommended in the iPod Classic troubleshooter / wizard didn't help, so now I just don't know what to do. Both the iPod and iTunes are updated to the most recent version, so has anyone got any useful advice? - The fact the Error 1439 message has already appeared on one of Apple's help pages along with other possible error messages suggests to me this must have happened to someone else before.  I can't call Apple's helpline isn't an option as I bought the iPod new in 2010 and apparently that means I'm not entitled to any help from them. So I need some help here please, but if all you can suggest is to post me back to the page about this in Apple Support please don't bother, I've already been there and the advice given doesn't work. Thanks and I look forward to reading your suggestions.

    Hey chjesc,
I have an article for you that addresses this error code and may be able to provide you with some further information regarding this issue:

  • My 4th gen ipod won't backup after it froze during a software update to 4.3.5. I had to cancel the backup at the start of the update and now it won't let me backup to my computer, freezes during backup or says my backup is corrupted.

I pressed 'X' during a backup after it froze during an update to software 4.3.5 and now it won't let me backup on my computer. Does anyone have any ideas? It either freezes during backup or says my 'backup is corrupted' or 'I cannot backup on my computer'. I have had to abort quite a few attempted backups since the initial problem, which I think has made it worse. I have already tried restoring my ipod, deleting the aborted backup from my preferences/devices in itunes and deleting it from my user/appdata/etc on my PC hard drive. Any ideas what to try next?

After hours of frustration I eventually decided to restore. I lost my apps, but i didn't have many and was able to reinstall them for free. During the restore it updated my ipod to the latest software 4.3.5, which i think may have caused the initial problem, but the backup issue remains. Sometimes it stops me from syncing and other times it allows me to skip the backup, but still says that i can't backup on my computer. I'm worried that it has done something to my computer as it took me six hours to do a Bullguard scan, which only normally takes about an hour. The scan didn't come up with any viruses, but it stalled at system32 for ages. The only other thing that i can think of is that a demo CD I uploaded may have caused a problem. iTunes couldn't find a track listing for it but gave me a few different options. i thought I had to choose one to continue, so did that then changed the track details to the correct tracks. I'm now worried that may have introduced an issue or caused a glitch in iTunes. How paranoid am I sounding?

  • Third Gen ipod won't work or restore

My friend has an old ipod with the click wheel. I think it's third generation. He hasn't been able to turn it on, and when it is connected to the computer it isn't recognized in Itunes. A couple times, a message popped up that said it needed to be restored because it's corrupted, but we can't get the window to stay up to even restore it. We've also tried resetting it, but that won't work. The computers have the newest version of itunes. We've run diagnostics, but the ipod connection always fails. The ipod won't update or play music. An the apple icon appears, and then a folder icon pops up that says to go to support. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. He doesn't have Apple Care.

I am having the same problem.
So you're saying the problem is with the USB?
If I go to the Apple Store they will have this "USB/Firewire" cable.
    Thanks for your help!
