Second gen shuffle causes computer to crash

I received a brand new second generation shuffle today and after downloading the new itunes and plugging it in it causes the computer to crash (blue screen) due to a problem with the device driver. I reinstalled itunes and still am having problems. Help!

Interestingly I had this last night. Used the shuffle, attached to my MacBook... closed the macbook, unplugged the shuffle and the macbook sprang into life (while closed). When I opened it, I had the kernel panic screen and had to power it off.
I've updated the firmware to 1.0.1 this morning, hopefully that will stop it happening again.

Upgraded to newest version of Itunes software. Second Gen Shuffle connected.. Sofware says that the ipod cant be used and needs to be reformatted. then it tells me that it needs to be restored. I go thru all the steps, the Shuffle reboots and shows as "IPOD" in the ITunes sofware. Then the ITUnes sofware says again that it needs to be restored... does not matter if I reboot the computer, the Shuffle or un plug and replug... same story.. any ideas out there? Is there a "Hard" reset on the shuffle?
    thx

Is there a "Hard" reset on the shuffle?
Yes... there's a specific application called Shuffle Reset Utility:

  • Loading software will cause computer to crash

I had a 15GB iPod, but the hard-drive broke. I recently got an iPod mini and when I try to update the software that came with it, a message comes up on my computer saying that it hasn't been checked by Windows, and to talk to Microsoft. I'm using Windows XP. I'm afraid to continue the installation after reading all these posts about updaters causing havoc on computers and iPods. What should I do? Am I being paranoid?

i have the plug in power outlet icon on my mini. is there anyway that i can get rid of that instead of getting a power outlet charger cuz i dont have one. and if there is no other way
You should start your own thread. Your problems have nothing to do with "Loading software will cause computer to crash".
how much is a mini power outlet (not usb) charger
You are two whole mouse clicks from looking it up yourself.

  • Ipod shuffle caused computer crash?

I plugged my shuffle into one of the usb ports on my computer while it was asleep, the ipod charged, and i removed it when the lights were no longer blinking and the computer was still asleep. Removing the shuffle caused the computer to wake up, so I opened the laptop, and realized that the computer still "thought" the ipod was connected, the rainbow swirly cursor is now permanently on the screen and I cannot open any programs, nor shut my computer down. I have tried to put the computer to sleep by closing it, and now all that I get is a black screen with the swirly rainbow cursor, which is movable with the trackpad. Help is greatly appreciated.

    V.,
I'd try to force quit (hold down the option + apple + esc keys simultaneously). It'll give you the option to quit whatever apps are open. Select iTunes & quit it. Then restart yr PB.
    Hope this helps.

  • SLOOOOW during themes; Causes computer to crash

Help! I just spent quite a bit of money (as you all know) on my new powerbook G4 last weekend and have so far been exceedingly satisfied with my purchase. Then, today I upgraded my standard iLife program to iLife 06, and was particlarly excited to start making movies with my pictures and video using the themes category.
However, whenever I try using themes, by comuter automatically freezes up for minutes on end, and goes SO slow! I can't even watch the video because it freezes and skips and goes extremely slow, causing my computer to crash every time. My computer completely freezes after awhile!
I've seen that I'm not the only one who has this problem... thankfully I didn't purchase iLife with my own money in addition to the computer, but still... I don't want it taking up a bunch of wasted room on my hard drive! It's a neat concept and everthing with the themes, but I don't necessarily HAVE to use it.
What recommendations do you guys have? (Those that have had problems and know what I'm talking about-- not those who have had perfect experiences. You've just been lucky, or we've just been unlucky. Who knows). Anyways, I would LOVE some help/advice on this because I don't want this wasted space on my hard drive, or have it cause my computer to run slower.
Has anyone had a problem outside of the themes page? I notice that there aren't as many options as there were on iLife 05'. Anyways. Let me know!!!

  • Second Gen Shuffle and Formatting

I just got my second gen ipod shuffle and it seemed to start working just fine but then I was formatting a new drive in explorer and I think I hit the ipod instead with NTFS file format. I cancled it and it failed but now the ipod won't recognize in either of my computers. One is XP and the other XP64. I tried the reset utility but my computer isn't recognizing the ipod so it just sits there.
When I plug the ipod in it will blink green and then just go black. When I take it out of the cradle and turn it on it won't do anything either.
Is there anything I can do? Has anyone else done this before?

It won't be recognized while it is formatted as NTFS. Connect it to your primary computer and reset it (turn it off, and back on) and see if your computer can see it. If it can, reformat it to FAT32, then restore it in iTunes.

  • Snow Leopard causes computer to crash

I purchased a snow leopard home pack (5 users). The first was on my macbook pro and there were lots of problems with my e-mail account, key chain and a number of my usual third party software programmes will not run on it (bummer as most want me to buy an upgrade license - more expense.
The second computer I ran it on, my wife's mac book, failed to load half way through. The box text said something along the lines of "disk error, take in for repair". When I quit installer and had the option to go back to the start up disk the computer crashed. Now when I turn it on it runs the initial start up (grey screen) for about two minutes then shuts down before it loads the login screen. The disk is locked in side and the computer is not running. If any one has a simple solution short of having to take it to the apple repair shop where it will be incarcerated for a week will be greatly appreciated.
This has not been one of mac's better software upgrades for me and I'm not recommending it to my friends or company (we use mac). The problems are not out waying the so called benefits just yet.

Incompatible third party apps can cause a computer to crash Not SL.
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
Personally I find Snow Kitty to be great but still waiting for some third party apps to be updated by the software writers. Not a deal beaker for me but others are waiting.
Updates are coming in thick and fast from the best Mac software writers and Printer manufacturers but Apple cannot do anything about software writers who haven't bothered to update for SL.
From Apple: To remove stuck discs. Although the Take in for repair message is a worry.
    1. Place the computer in sleep mode.
    2. Press the Media Eject key at the top-right corner of the keyboard.
    3. If that doesn't work, drag the disc's icon to the Trash.
    4. If that doesn't work, restart the computer, then hold down the mouse button.

  • WRT610N causing computer to crash -- repeatedly!

So I received my WRT610N yesterday and set it up. After working for hours to get the thing to connect, it now causes my computer to crash unexpectedly and repeatedly.  I initially thought it was the software doing this but, after removing the software, I tested this by just plugging in the router.  Bam. Computer crash and reboot.  Could it be the signal is just too much for my 5+ year old computer to handle?
I'm pretty sure I'm just going to return the router and give up on the idea of a BluRay I can stream HD video on.
    Any input?
    Thanks,
    Keith

Well i think this might be due to the Older Version of the Drivers for the Wireless Card installed on your Computer. Try to upgrade the drivers for the wireless adapter on your computer and i think this might solve the problem.

  • Second gen shuffle earphones

I swapped some earwax the other day with a friend who has newer iPod video he got for Christmas, with the new headphones; my iPod video, same model, has the older headphones. We both agree it's like not wearing headphones at all, so I must have some.
Does the 2nd gen shuffle that initially shipped with the older earphone style, like mine, now ship with newer, redesigned earbuds, or they still the old ones. The accessory version of the new phones is $30, so I figured for $79 I might just get a shuffle as well. I'm pretty sure the earbuds come with the nanos, but $150 for them, even if I get a 2GB nano with it, is starting to get a little steep for earbuds. Although a good pair of noise-cancelling earbuds will cost you about $150 and you get no nano with them
So, what's it? New earbuds or old ones still packed-in with the 2nd gen shuffle?

    shorter cable:

That's the same iPod and packaging I have. I'm not fully knowledgeable about the different sets of earphones as I know nothing about shorter cords and such. I'm referring to the design of the piece that fits into your ear. The web site shows the newer, sleeker design with the Shuffle. I received the older ones like that were released with the original Shuffle, where the back of the ear piece isn't sleek, but rather has the "stick" with the earbud attached. Like pictured here:
    http://www.computerpartscellar.co.uk/images/ipod%20earphone.jpg
That is what I received but that's not what is shown on the Apple web site under the iPod Shuffle product information and specs pages.
Can you tell me more about this shorter cable thing?
    Thanks

  • IPOD 5th gen causes computer to crash!!!

i have a computer running pentium 3 with windows xp pro, service pack 3, itunes 9 and have 1.8gb left on a 80gb hard drive.
i really want to use my ipod, but every time i connect it, my computer restarts.
The first time i connected it, my computer simply wouldn't recognise it
btw, no internet on the computer being referenced, curr3ntly using parent's computer

Okay, I got the f$^ker figured out!
I did a complete uninstall...deleted anything that had anything to do with Itunes. Did a Windows search for Itunes and then deleted it. (I had already backed up my music library to a external hard drive.)
I then took my Ipod to an Apple repair store and they plugged it into a different windows computer and they were getting the same issues with Itunes as I was getting. They then restarted their computer with my Ipod still plugged into it and when Itunes opened, there it was, the normal window for my Ipod! So they reformatted it for me and I brought it home and installed the 7.02 version of Itunes and held my breath when I plugged my Ipod in, and lo and behold! There it was...all sparkly and clean!
I now know if this happens to me again, I can just go to another computer and plug my Ipod into it and see if I can get that computers Itunes to read my Ipod and then reformat it...it would be a lot less hassle than getting rid of everything to try and reformat.
So that's it! REFORMAT your Ipod if it freezes up your Itunes program.
    Cheers!

  • Cookies.sqlite folder is causing computer freezes/crashes. HD-problem ? Firefox-problem ? virus problem ? Solution ??

Hi, this is a bit complicated so please bear with me. Thank you.
Simply put my question is: What exactly is stored in "cookies.sqlite" ? I notice there are many cookies-files in my profile, such as "cookies.sqlite.bak", "cookies.sqlite-shm", "cookies.sqlite-wal" etc. What exactly gets lost if I delete "cookies sqlite" ? Can I even do that without hurting the rest of my profile ?
And could there be anything in this "cookies sqlite" folder that is causing Firefox not to run and my computer to freeze every time I try ?
Reason for asking: Not sure if I have a corrupted Firefox file, a hard drive problem or another problem.
Background info: The day before yesterday, my notebook (Lenovo, XP) was working fine. When I went to start it up yesterday, it did not boot properly. I tried a couple of times and eventually it worked. I tried to open Firefox which caused the computer to freeze. When I forced a shut-down and turned it back on, it ran checkdisk. It detected something, fixed it and started back up again. Explorer worked, so I went ahead and saved all my data manually. Then I wanted to save my Firefox profile as well and the computer froze. I started it back up, tried again and the same thing happened. I then tried again file-by-file. The file freezing my system turned out to be "cookies sqlite". I was able to copy all other files (including all other cookie-files). But when I touched "cookies.sqlite" (and we're talking copy and paste to an external HD) the machine froze. I tried the same thing through a Ubuntu live CD and again I was able to copy all of the profile except the cookies sqlite file. I tried doing an Acronis backup and there were some reading errors at the very end of the backup. I ran Lenovo's PC doctor that said that there is a hard drive problem. I ran chkdisk from the command line and the computer froze during chkdsk. I tried to see what on the computer was still working and it turned out that nearly everything was fine. I was able to start Opera and Thunderbird, burn DVDs etc. But when I tried Firefox again the computer froze. Every time it freezes and I force a shut-down and re-boot it, I get something different on chkdsk. Sometimes nothing (all is well), sometimes something is repaired or deleted at various stages of chkdsk. But apart from that the computer works just fine. Well, almost: The only other thing that causes problems is running a virus scan (with Avast anti-virus). Again the computer crashes towards the end of the check (similar to Avast) and I get a "kernel_stack_inpage_error" with a bunch of number codes. Running scans with anti-malware-tools (Malawarebytes, Superantispyware, Spybot) is fine and nothing is found.
So my question would be: is it possible that that cookies.sqlite file is somehow corrupted and is causing all these problems ? Or is it a malfunctioning hard-drive with an isolated problem in the area where this file is located ? What is the best way to find out ? (Given that I can neither run chkdsk from the command line, neither run an antivirus scan). What can I try to do about it ? What happens if I delete the "cookies.sqlite" - file and replace it with an older version ? Could that solve the problem ? Or will it cause even more ? And is there any chance to save the data from that cookies.sqlite-file ? Safe mode does not work (same thing: computer freezes), neither does Ubuntu live CD.
Oh, and the hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar which is about 3 years old, so it should still have lots of life left.
    Thanks a million!
    eLeo

  • ITunes 7.1 Causes Computer to Crash During Games

When running iTunes 7.1 along with games in order to play my own music in the background (specifically Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion but presumably any game with significant usage of EAX or 3D sound hardware capabilities), my sound card's output becomes garbled (but only for the game's output, not iTunes') and shortly after my computer either freezes or experiences a MACHINECHECKEXCEPTION blue screen of death. The only other game I have installed - The Sims 2 - does not cause this problem, but it probably isn't as taxing on audio hardware.
You can listen to the (fatal) glitch here if you're interested: http://www.supload.com/listen?s=S7n1x01E_1X
The reason I am coming here instead of a Creative forum is that the problem was introduced with iTunes 7.1 and will not occur with any previous version or any other audio-playing software I've tried.
I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, and the problem is limited to this card, meaning it doesn't happen with my onboard sound, but the problem was introduced with iTunes 7.1. I've uninstalled and put version 7 (no .1) back on to make sure and the problem would not occur.
Also, it seems to be limited to having high-quality audio options set in the QuickTime Preferences. It only seems to happen when I have 48kHz as the sampling rate and 24-bit as the size. Using "Safe mode" will have no effect; the problem occurs with or without using waveOut.
I almost scrapped my sound card until I decided to diagnose the problem further and discovered it was limited to iTunes 7.1.
I hope this problem is solved in future versions of iTunes, but since - I'll admit - it seems fairly obscure, I'll probably be forced to stay one version below 7.1 from now on or (Gosh-forbid) lower the quality settings for now.
So some steps to reproduce the problem (if you have a Creative Sound Blaster card (one that supports 24-bit which is most new or decent ones) I'd appreciate you confirming this issue) are:
    1. Open QuickTime Player. Click Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences. Click the Audio tab and change the Rate to 48 kHz if it isn't there already. Change the Size to 24 bit from 16 bit. Channels doesn't seem to have any effect on this issue so leave it alone. Click OK and exit QuickTime player.
    2. Now go ahead and open iTunes and start playing some music.
    3. Try playing any game you have that takes a decent toll on your sound card's abilities (Oblivion should cut it if you have it; I haven't tried World of Warcraft but I'd reckon that in a busy area the problem would occur in it as well).
    4. Enter an area with a lot of noises, or start battling or something.
    And a temporary workaround:
    1. Just change the Size back to 16 bit, or lower the Rate to 44.1 kHz, and the problem should go away.
Windows XP Pro Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

Correction: I didn't put the original version 7 back on. What a mistake that would have been.. I put 7.0.2.16 on, the version directly preceding 7.1. You can get it here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/?1774

  • Ipod Mini second gen freezes my computer

I have windows 7 and this is the first time i've ever plugged my Ipod into this computer. WHen I plug it in, it isn't detected by the computer or Itunes. If i plug it in then try to open Itunes, it won't open. If i unplug it afterward, then Itunes opens. I also can't open internet explorer. I have the latest version of Itunes and everything on my computer is updated. I have virus protection and all that so I know it's not a virus. What's happening to my ipod? Do i have to reset it? And if so, will i lose all my songs?

    Hello Paul,
Thank you for your kind word, I totally agree that Mark is a knowledgeable guy but def. not me. I am just a guy enjoy to repairing the iPods and share my experience with people who have the problems.
Make the long story short, I do not know the reason cause but I discover the following points:-
    1. iPod will be free from problem if it only got charged by the AC charger instead of the computer.
    2. Problems always happen just after the installation of the latest iPod updater or connecting with the computer, particular PC.
    3. Some iPods not able to be charged from the USB port of a PC - it happens to most of the PDA cases as well. The unstable of power supply from the USB port always the reason to screw the iPod.
    4. After the installation of the iPod updater, some iPods need to be plugged with an AC Charger to finish the installation process. And lot of case got stuck at this stage.
    5. iPod is like an external HD, when you put it Disk Mode, you got better chance to get your iPod mount with the computer, in order for you to do the Restore.
    6. Reset does help on most cases
    7. If reset does not work then you must do a Restore
    8. Some iPods may need to do a Format (Disk Utility or 3rd party software) instead of purely doing a Restore.
    9. If your iPod is formatted in a PC, and cant recognized by your PC, it is better chance to solve it by connectting it with a Mac and vince verse
    10. Use Firewire instead of USB
Stay away from connecting your iPod with a PC unless you need to do the update of iPod software

  • Flash Player causes computer to crash and no computer sound?

    Hi all,
Was wondering if you guys could help me out.
Basically I have a fairly new computer (Dell Studio 1557).
After a couple of days of use I booted up like I normally do and tried watch some YouTube videos,
The video failed to load and once I clicked anywhere in the browser it became non responsive and forced me to close the browser (Firefox), a similar situation occurs with all the other browser i have (chrome won’t even load)
The browser freezes if I try to access anything with flash on the webpage.
Another thing that seems to be affected is the computer’s sound, Every time the flash player doesn't work the sound on the computer won't work either(not just flash videos on websites). Programs like itunes,VLC,WMP fail to load because they all use sound.
The only solution I’ve found is to restart the computer although the problem is back the next day, I've tried all the usual stuff (reinstalling flash, the browsers, and making sure the audio drivers are up to date).
Anybody out there have a similar problem or any solutions, any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your sound is crashing "system wide" your problems are deeper (a lot deeper) than Flash Player.
Make sure you have your Windows 7 DVD.
Click Start and Run (if the Run Command isn't in your Start Menu, you can add it by right clicking the Start button and choosing Properties, then go to Start Menu and Customize.
In the Run window type "sfc /scannow" minus the quotes, of course. That's ess eff see space slashscannow exactly as it appears between the quotes.
This will start the Windows System File Checker (SFC) and will scan your OS to ensure all necessary system files are intact and uncorrupted.
It may ask for the Windows 7 DVD if it finds something it cannot repair, so you need to have it handy.
