Second gen shuffle earphones

I swapped some earwax the other day with a friend who has newer iPod video he got for Christmas, with the new headphones; my iPod video, same model, has the older headphones. We both agree it's like not wearing headphones at all, so I must have some.
Does the 2nd gen shuffle that initially shipped with the older earphone style, like mine, now ship with newer, redesigned earbuds, or they still the old ones. The accessory version of the new phones is $30, so I figured for $79 I might just get a shuffle as well. I'm pretty sure the earbuds come with the nanos, but $150 for them, even if I get a 2GB nano with it, is starting to get a little steep for earbuds. Although a good pair of noise-cancelling earbuds will cost you about $150 and you get no nano with them
So, what's it? New earbuds or old ones still packed-in with the 2nd gen shuffle?

shorter cable:

That's the same iPod and packaging I have. I'm not fully knowledgeable about the different sets of earphones as I know nothing about shorter cords and such. I'm referring to the design of the piece that fits into your ear. The web site shows the newer, sleeker design with the Shuffle. I received the older ones like that were released with the original Shuffle, where the back of the ear piece isn't sleek, but rather has the "stick" with the earbud attached. Like pictured here:

That is what I received but that's not what is shown on the Apple web site under the iPod Shuffle product information and specs pages.
Can you tell me more about this shorter cable thing?
Thanks

  • Second Gen Shuffle - In Restore Loop !

Upgraded to newest version of Itunes software. Second Gen Shuffle connected.. Sofware says that the ipod cant be used and needs to be reformatted. then it tells me that it needs to be restored. I go thru all the steps, the Shuffle reboots and shows as "IPOD" in the ITunes sofware. Then the ITUnes sofware says again that it needs to be restored... does not matter if I reboot the computer, the Shuffle or un plug and replug... same story.. any ideas out there? Is there a "Hard" reset on the shuffle?
    thx

Is there a "Hard" reset on the shuffle?
Yes... there's a specific application called Shuffle Reset Utility:

  • Second Gen Shuffle and Formatting

I just got my second gen ipod shuffle and it seemed to start working just fine but then I was formatting a new drive in explorer and I think I hit the ipod instead with NTFS file format. I cancled it and it failed but now the ipod won't recognize in either of my computers. One is XP and the other XP64. I tried the reset utility but my computer isn't recognizing the ipod so it just sits there.
When I plug the ipod in it will blink green and then just go black. When I take it out of the cradle and turn it on it won't do anything either.
Is there anything I can do? Has anyone else done this before?

It won't be recognized while it is formatted as NTFS. Connect it to your primary computer and reset it (turn it off, and back on) and see if your computer can see it. If it can, reformat it to FAT32, then restore it in iTunes.

  • Second gen shuffle causes computer to crash

I received a brand new second generation shuffle today and after downloading the new itunes and plugging it in it causes the computer to crash (blue screen) due to a problem with the device driver. I reinstalled itunes and still am having problems. Help!

Interestingly I had this last night. Used the shuffle, attached to my MacBook... closed the macbook, unplugged the shuffle and the macbook sprang into life (while closed). When I opened it, I had the kernel panic screen and had to power it off.
I've updated the firmware to 1.0.1 this morning, hopefully that will stop it happening again.

  • Reset utility shuffle second gen

I am trying to use apples online reset utility for a problematic second gen shuffle.
    The link seems dead.
I Cannot restore with iTunes as iTunes tells me this iPod cannot be recognised so use the utility to reset.
    here is the link
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iPod_Reset_Utility_1_0_3_for_Mac
The shuffle does nothing at all, no lights, switch on/off and nothing but it will be beyond a flat battery but it's actually hardly ever been used, just been sat in a cupboard.
    latest iTunes on Mac also.
    any help anyone?

    Hi IPod Whisperer;
Yes, we do have different definitions of Autofill. You are talking about "fill free space with music," which is what I do not use. When you sync the second generation, an autofill button appears in the lower right corner of the music tab by default. You can use a dropdown in the lower left corner to select which playlist you autofill from. I use a custom playlist to autofill from (built externally via a java app because smart playlists don't cut it with me). To enable this feature in the fourth generation, you have to change the ipod settings to "manually manage music." When you manually manage music, the autofill feature comes back, but at the expense of play/skip counts/dates. I use play/skip counts/dates in my playlist to prevent tracks from reappearing - e.g. I don't want the same track to be synced all the time - I want some variety. I think the autofill is an important feature and should not be hidden (and changed) like it is in the fourth generation. It should be available all of the time just like the second generation.
In my experience, the second generation will respect the playlist order when you are in "unshuffle mode." I do not see this behavior in the fourth generation. When the play button is in the "center" on the fourth generation, the playlist is played in alphabetical order - not the order of the playlist. One such remedy to this is play the playlist in shuffle mode, but we're back to the same problem again - the playlist is not played in its original order. I don't like the shuffle mode on either generation because it tends to repeat tracks.
I appreciate your reply. I am going to leave this question open.

  • Do New Earphones work with the 2nd Gen Shuffle?

So my dog chewed up my 2nd Gen Ipod Shuffle earphones and I wanted to replace them. When I went to the the apple online store they are only selling the new earphones for the 3rd Gen Shuffle, that has a remote and a mic. It only says it supports the 3rd Gen Shuffle. Would I still be able to hear music on the new earphones? I don't really care about the remote and mic capabilities.
Here's the link to the 3rd Gen Earphones:

YES! I just used my 3rd Gen (replacement) earphones with my 2nd Gen
shuffle this evening... they worked fine.

  • Ipod shuffle 3rd gen.  earphone choice?

I am already on my second pair of earphones for my shuffle as the integrated controller broke on the first pair after a week!! I also hate the earphone design as I cant wear them as they hurt my ears I usually go for the bud design which fit better and are more comfortable. Does anyone know if Apple are going to bring out a choice of earphone designs?

Probably not, but you can buy headphones from 3rd party vendors, or buy and adapter and use any headphones you want:

  • After recharging shuffle(second gen 2 gb) it played the song from the start

after recharging shuffle(second gen 2 gb) it played the song from the start instead or continuing from the last song played. I put 500 song on the shuffle, then I listen to 200 roughly on and off for 3 days (1 hour here, 1 hour there etc.).But now I have to recharge it then when I turn it on, it start at number 1 song and not 201. Even though with 500 song itunes says play time roughtly 1.4 day, so roughly 30 hours, and the charge last roughly 12 hour (give or take a few, depending on volume, skip etc...) maybe I would have been better with a 1 gb. so i don't have to skip to the last song I played before I recharge it.
Beside that, so far I love my shuffle, I have been going thru different mp3 players, this one is great except for that little problem.
any idea or suggestion would be appreciate to help maximize my ipod experience
    Thank you

    Hi Jello2208,
unfortunately it's normal behaviour for the iPod shuffle to reset the playback position to the first song whenever it is synced.
A safe way to avoid this is using the USB power adapter for charging instead of connecting the iPod to your computer.
If you don't have a power adapter, try this: In the iPod settings in iTunes, deselect the option to open iTunes automatically when the iPod is connected. Now whenever you connect your iPod to your computer just to charge it, make sure that iTunes isn't running, and don't start it while the iPod is connected. This way no sync will happen and hopefully the playback position will survive.

  • Ipod shuffle second gen won't sync properly

Does anyone else have an Ipod and a Netgear SC101? It appears there is a conflict with the drivers. Unfortunately I can't really afford to replace the SC101 with an alternate form of storage and there really isn't a replacement for the shuffle on the market.
Here's the main issue. Starting from a freshly reset ipod (using the reset utility) iTunes opens and offers to rename and fill my iPod. If I say OK, I get an iPod full of music from my music library. If I say no, and I try to sync the iPod at any point in the future, I get disk write errors. Also, after the initial sync specified above, further syncs do not work. I can't change any settings, I can't upgrade the software, etc.
Any help? The guys on the netgear forum seem to be struggling with this as well. I refuse to believe I will never be able to use my shuffle and my "toaster" on the same PC.
    Please, please, please help.

On a related topic, is there a plan to update the iPod reset utility to restore the 2nd gen shuffle to 1.0.3? I'm not sure what it fixes, but as it stands I can't update using iTunes.
Also some additional information: After I reset using the utility, the iPod shows up in My Computer as a separate drive. Also iTunes starts automatically and asks to sync it. As soon as I take any action, the iPod drops off as an available drive.
I think one method to fix this may be to provide some default values in the reset utility. I would like to enable the shuffle for disk usage and change the default playlist to sync with. If this happened during the reset (which is the only way I currently have to change the music on my shuffle) I might have a chance of future syncs without resets.

  • 2nd gen shuffle not working windows 7

I connected my 2nd gen shuffle to my laptop (Windows 7) and it told me I need to restore it, but Itunes keeps crashing every time i tried. I restared my pc, then it stopped showing in Itunes but showed on devices, and was on. Now it does nothing at all, no lights or anything. Any help appreciated

I have two suggestions.  There is an iPod Reset Utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238
that is only for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle.  It does something like a Restore in iTunes, but works at a "lower" level in cases when a Restore in iTunes does not work (or cannot be used).  For it to work, the shuffle does need to be seen by the system, and it sounds like yours meets that requirement.
Unfortunately, I don't think it works with Windows 7.  If you happen to have an older PC with 32-bit Windows, you can use that PC to run the utility on the shuffle.  Or, maybe you have a friend with a Mac or 32-bit Windows PC that can run it for your.  Or, if you have an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar and ask them to look at it and run the reset utility.
The second suggestion, if you don't have a convenient way to use the reset utility, is to use Windows to reformat the shuffle's storage like it was a flash drive.  Use a "full" format (not the "quick" option).  Use the "FAT" format type.  Make sure iTunes is NOT running.  After it is reformatted, it will be blank.  When you run iTunes, it should recognize the shuffle and ask you to Restore it (to re-install the software and set it to default settings).  Hopefully, it will work this time.

  • My 4th gen shuffle does not play more then one type of podcast It will only play this american life even if I have the moth on it.  It play what ever is first on the list

My 4th gen shuffle only plays the first category of podcast and will not go to the next category, it will only repeat. Example:it will play all pod casts of this american life(first on the list) and not got to the moth (second category on the list).  It does not work like my old shuffle.

if you make a playlist and load the podcasts in the order you want to listen to them, it will work.  In effect you are double syncing.  I had the same problem and got it to work

  • Two 1st gen shuffles; one comp

ok here's my problem; i have a first gen ipod shuffle.(the long skinny white one) it works fine had it for 2 months. i bought my son the same 1st gen shuffle for xmas. I went to install the cd; it removed the 1st installation from when i installed my shuffle. so i reinstalled. it won't recognize the second shuffle (my son's) AT ALL. i restored it using the restore utility download; no help. the new shuffle is still plugged in orange light. doesnt show up in itunes or on my computer.
also when i registered the new shuffle the serial code wasnt accepted, so i had to use the MP code on the box, then it shows me the serial number, which is the exact number i entered.
my question is: can you run two shuffles on one computer, on one itunes, and just have the program recognize the two different shuffles? how? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

For running Multiple iPods please look to this article.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432
As For trying to install the CD to the Shuffle, Make sure that you are running the latest version of Itunes.
    1. Click Help in iTunes
    2. Click About Itunes
The Version number will be the first thing you see scrolling up the page. if you are not Running 7.0.2 then Download latest software and try to sync ipod once again.

  • Moving tracks around when loading 3rd gen shuffle

Until very recently I've only used a first generation shuffle, but am now trying to figure out how to use the 3rd gen so that I get the same kind of enjoyment, but with more memory - which is the idea, right?! I have issues with the earphone remote set-up but what I really want to know is how I can move tracks around in the shuffle pane which lists the tracks I've put on there. This was really easy on my 1st gen shuffle, you could just drag and drop tracks into the order you wanted them after loading them. But this seems impossible on the 3rd gen. Say for example I load a playlist and a couple of albums, and then I want to change the order they appear in the list onscreen without having to delete them and reload the shuffle. How do I do that? I often like to keep the same content on the shuffle for long periods of time, but while charging it move some of the content around. This is how I was used to using my 1st gen shuffle and it seems particularly important now that I have to deal with the crappy remote - getting to particular tracks while actually listening is irritating because of all the stoopid clicking you have to do So what I really need is to know how I can reorganise the content that's already on there into a different order before I unplug and play. Very annoyingly, at the moment the only way to do this seems to be to delete all content every time I want to reorganise the order of tracks.
    Please help!! Thanks

    Linda,
No I just use one earbud in my ear. I put the earbud in my right ear--away from the window side and it is also the one with the in-line controls, so that works great. I don't put it on very loud either.
If I am not listening to a podcast and just want to hear music I sometimes will plug it into a line-in cable, but then I don't have a choice on what I am listening to. It's not a real problem because I like all the songs I have on it anyway. I can still adjust the volume on the car stereo, so that is the way I do it.
I am watching closely for any accessories that might allow a headphone splitter to work, but nothing so far. I am sure we will see some useful additions in the near future. And by the way, the earbuds that came with it work great in my ears--never fall out and are comfortable to me.

  • How do I delete files on my iPod second gen?  This is a NEW problem I have only had with the latest version of iTunes.  I have not changed libraries.

How do I delete files on my iPod second gen?  This is a NEW problem I have only had with the latest version of iTunes.  I have not changed libraries.  All files are grayed out.  I have already read related posts in the iTunes community.

Thanks but I had already read this, and it was no help at all.  Under the Summary tab, "Options", there is no check-box to manually manage my stuff.  I suspect this is because it is a 2nd gen iPod, with ONLY manual management.  The only way to delete my stuff seems to be to reset the entire device.
I like to listen to podcasts.  What is particularly frustrating is that the 4th gen shuffle CANNOT play podcasts, but ONLY music, which I discovered after a lot of research and multiple visits to an Apple store.  So I have to resort to an older version of the shuffle to play podcasts  And now with the latest version of iTunes there seems to be no way to delete any podcasts on the older version.  Apple just makes it harder and harder for us podcast-lovers, driving us away from Apple -- driving me away from the entire brand and from ALL Apple devices, not just iPod.

  • I have a second generation shuffle and even though (after charging ) the green battery light is on - soon after it turns orange and then red. Is there a problem with the battery and is it fixable?

I have a second generation shuffle and even though (after charging) the green battery light is on it soon turns orange and red. Is there a problem with the battery and if so is it fixable?

If it's a 2nd gen shuffle, it is probably about six years old at this point.  The cause is likely to be a worn out battery that is no longer able to hold its charge for very long.
It is technically fixable.  This web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Shuffle
But it is very small, so you need to be good at doing such things.  The cost to have a repair shop do the work is likely to be uneconomical, compared to the cost of a brand new 4th gen shuffle ($50), which has more features (and possibly double the storage) plus a one-year warranty.
