Second Generation Shuffle Problem

My situation is the following: My new 2nd gen. shuffle seemed to work fine for about one day. Now, without having abused it it doesn't seem to work at all.
It will sometimes be recognized by iTunes 7.0.2, but only after docking and undocking a couple times, and when recognized I can play songs through iTunes. However, when I undock it (and I do this the proper way) it either acts completely dead (with no lights or anything) or acts like it should be working, but doesn't play music through (otherwise fully functional) headphones or speakers. I should also note that if left on the dock for a while it sometimes seems to get a bit warm to the touch, but this might be normal.
Anyone else having this problem? My Shuffle might just be a dud!
P.S. I already reset it to factory conditions (when I could get it to be recognized) but this didn't solve anything.
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   re: Second Generation iPod Shuffle

It seems like this is my only forum option unless i post under "connecting the ipod shuffle" which is the lesser of my two problem (it sometimes connects but never plays music while separated). I'm new at this so I may be missing something.

I have a second generation shuffle and even though (after charging) the green battery light is on it soon turns orange and red. Is there a problem with the battery and if so is it fixable?

If it's a 2nd gen shuffle, it is probably about six years old at this point.  The cause is likely to be a worn out battery that is no longer able to hold its charge for very long.
It is technically fixable.  This web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Shuffle
But it is very small, so you need to be good at doing such things.  The cost to have a repair shop do the work is likely to be uneconomical, compared to the cost of a brand new 4th gen shuffle ($50), which has more features (and possibly double the storage) plus a one-year warranty.

  • Ihome and second generation shuffle

Does anyone know if there is anything available that will make a second generation shuffle work with Ihome? I love my Ihome, and am thoroughly disgusted it will not work with my new shuffle. I've seen posts saying the new shuffle will only charge on Ihome, but I've not seen any postings showing a fix. HELP!!

IHome clocks and audio systems have an audio-in which can be used to connect your shuffle's audio-out port (earphone jack) using a cable that has a 3.5mm (mini) plug on both ends...
Otherwise you can use the Griffin Technology iPod shuffle dock adapter:
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/dockadapter
Note that with Griffin's adapter your shuffle either plays or charges but NOT both simultaneously.

  • Second Generation Shuffle compatibility

Looking at getting a shuffle for my daughters birthday and just wondered if al a second Generation Shuffle will work with OSX Panther?

    Hi johnforshaw2003
i'm sure that as long as you have the latest version of itunes it will work but just wait for someone else to confirm that but thats my view. The computer should if you have installed all of the updates and if you have the latest version of itunes it should work, having the latest version should enable it to be detected.

  • IPod Touch 4th Generation shuffle problem

I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation and made the awful mistake of hitting shuffle by accident.  It seems to be permanently stuck in that mode now.  How do I turn the blasted shuffle off?  Is there any way to disable it for good?  Some albums just have to be heard in song order.

With an album playing, tap the album cover until you see the elapsed song time, then tap the shuffle symbol (it's directly under the song time) until it is white.

  • Will a second generation shuffle sinc to more than one computer

I am having problems getting my shuffle to sync to my new computer, it worked fine on my old one. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was told it would sinc to only one computer

I'm having the same problem.  I plugged my ipod shuffle up to new cpu and 3 orange blinks.  CPU nor Itunes will recognize my device.  Very Frustrating!

  • IPod shuffle second generation shuffle button broken?

The shuffle/order button is supposed to stay in place once you push it to play songs on either shuffle or in order, but my button must be broken because it'll just flop over to the other side if you tip it...this only happens if it's pushed to play songs in order. Since the in order button won't work, I can't play podcasts =[. What should I do? apple.com doesn't list this under one of the problems that shuffles have....please help!

That just sounds like it's broken. Not much you can do. If it's under one year old, you may be able to get it replaced under warranty. If not, you can get another one, including a new set of earbuds, for $39 at the Apple Store refurb (Special Deals) page.

  • Second Ipod Shuffle Problem

Alright, so what happened was my original computer went corrupt and I lost all my songs from Itunes.. so I bought another computer and bought new songs.. all my songs were on my Ipod and then yesterday I plugged it in and Itunes told me "Your ipod is corrupt" or something like that.. when i looked on my ipod all my music and playlists were gone. So I restored the ipod, now it keeps telling me my ipod needs to be updated and to go click Update.. but the update button is disabled. I can't sync any of my purchased songs because I need to update my ipod first? How can I update my ipod without using Itunes?

You need itunes or a compatible software program to update your shuffle. If you did a restore your shuffle is now empty. (you could have used my computer and copied the songs from the shuffle to your computer and imported back into itunes). You may want to try a clean restore if you've already completed one:

Also, check that you have the latest itunes version.

  • How can I get my second generation shuffle to accept all songs?

When I try to add certain songs, it will not copy them. It will begin the synching process, then cancel synching. I will check the playlist and the song will not be there. I retry multiple times. It is not because the memory is full. It will let me add other songs after a failed synch. Removing my ipoid and putting it back does not help. For the first fews years I had the shuffle, it worked fine and accepted any song. Over the past six months, it has begun doing this. How can I get it to accept all songs again? Is there a way to restore it? Will that help? Thanks!

  • Second gen shuffle causes computer to crash

I received a brand new second generation shuffle today and after downloading the new itunes and plugging it in it causes the computer to crash (blue screen) due to a problem with the device driver. I reinstalled itunes and still am having problems. Help!

Interestingly I had this last night. Used the shuffle, attached to my MacBook... closed the macbook, unplugged the shuffle and the macbook sprang into life (while closed). When I opened it, I had the kernel panic screen and had to power it off.
I've updated the firmware to 1.0.1 this morning, hopefully that will stop it happening again.

  • 1st Generation Shuffle and iTunes

I have a 1st generation shuffle with the original itunes software loaded up on a windows PC. My roomate has a second generation shuffle with itunes 7.6.
Will my 1st generation shuffle operate using itunes 7.6 or should we have two separate versions of itunes on our computer?
Also, my 1st generation shuffle uses some USB-based headphones. At what point in the software saga will they stop working? Does anyone know?

The original shuffle will work fine with any version of iTunes that came after it was introduced, including the current version 8.1.1.
Also, my 1st generation shuffle uses some USB-based headphones.
What product is that? iTunes is always being updated, but the software on the 1st gen shuffle will probably not get updated anymore at this point. Each new version of iTunes will just install the same internal iPod software if you do a Restore. Therefore, any peripheral that works now will probably keep working.

  • IPod shuffle second generation not compatible with latest iTunes?

Edit: re-reading this message I notice I say sync when talking about the iPod shuffles. Note that there is NO sync option shown in iTunes, only auto fill. Whenever I say sync regarding the shuffles, I mean auto fill. Syncing for the iPod Touches works fine though.
My sister recently got three iPod touches for her family and I helped set them up. I had no problems setting them up at all. It's when she brought me two iPod Shuffles (generation 2), one for my niece since she's not old enough to use an expensive iPod touch, where the headaches began. When choosing to synch, iTunes says it is waiting for the iPod and hangs for a good 2+ minutes. After it unfreezes, with no error messages, I see no changes, and no music is on the iPod (either of them).
The iTunes version is 8.1.1.10, which is the latest currently. Much to my horror Internet searches show a multitude of people claiming the iPod shuffles gen 1 and 2 do not properly work with the latest iTunes software! Is this true, and if so has Apple released any statement on the matter?
This program came to our rescue:
    http://www.getsharepod.com/
I was successfully able to add music to the gen 2 iPod shuffles using that program, and indeed I know not to run both it and iTunes at the same time. iTunes was even able to display the tracks and play list I created with Sharepod, but the "fill" command still did the same thing: caused iTunes to hang for a time while saying it was waiting for the iPod and then continue as if it finished properly later... with no changes made at all. Even the check boxes for settings don't seem to save, but iTunes does properly name the devices. One is for one of my nephews and one is for my niece. Dragging songs to the iPod shuffle causes the same behavior of freezing for a time before unfreezing with no songs added to the device. I must note that by freeze I don't mean Windows says it's not responding. I can tab out and minimize/restore the program fine. All controls in the program such as clicking on play lists or trying to access the menus or clicking things do nothing until it unfreezes though. Since the iPod touches sync so incredibly quickly, I don't know if the program freezes during a normal sync.
After creating three separate libraries (my sister does not want each child having their own Windows name) and successfully showing the kids how to hold shift to choose a library when starting the program, each device is properly bound to each of my sister's family's names. As I said the iPod touches work perfectly so I am going to assume this is the dreaded incompatibly the latest software has with the iPod shuffle gen 2s?
Is there a fix for this issue or are we just stuck using third party software to deal with the iPod shuffles?

Thanks! SharePod really did the trick.
iTunes 8.1.1.10 wiped out my 2nd generation Shuffle. SharePod is the only way I can put songs in any more. From the looks of the forum I'm not the only one. Sure hope Apple figures it out soon!

  • Does the dock from a fourth generation ipod shuffle work with a second generation ipod shuffle?

Does the dock from a fourth generation ipod shuffle work with a second generation ipod shuffle?

No, they are different.  If you look at the replacement part for the 4th gen shuffle's USB cable

it says it's only for the 3rd and 4th gen shuffle.

I am not computer savvy. I have a second generation itouch and have never had any problems with it until now.  When I try to play certain songs, it will not play the song and skip to the next song selection.  When I try to play certain videos, the message "This movie could not be played" appears.  I contacted a tech spec who said it was possibly a format problem.  How do i fix this?

This might sound weird, but here's an idea which worked for me re music that was newly added to itunes and showed up in my ipod but wouldn't play - I simply played the tracks in itunes first, just a second of time or so will do it, not the whole track, then connect the ipod and sync again and this time they played - hope this helps.
