Second hand license legalities

Hi All,
This isn't really a DVD SP technical question as such but does involve it.
I really need to buy and learn DVD Studio Pro. At the moment cash is a bit short and I noticed that there were a few people selling original boxed versions of DVD SP v3 on ebay . My main concern with this is remaining legal and I have contacted one seller who said he will take the necessary steps to transfer the license to me so that I remain legal and get an upgrade path to version 4. I don't think he really knows how to do this And I cant seem to find any info on it either but noticed that apple software licenses do allow one transfer to another party.
Can anybody offer me any advice on this. I figure that if I make it easy for him he is more likely to actually do it.
many thanks
Matt

  • Second hand license legal?

    Dear
I've recently found a company willing to sell their CS3 software to me (which I'll be using for commercial use). However, they've lost their purchase records and thus will be unable to transfer the registration to my account (which is normally the way to legally transfer a license).
They however offered a written transfer of license (a document which confirms I'll now be the legal owner of the license rather than them), and have already uninstalled/deactivated all software related to this license on their systems.
My question is, if I would go with this, am I than using the software legally? Or is a correct registration transfer absolutely required to operate Adobe software legally?
    Thank you for your answer!

That may involve a lot of hocuspocus and escalating the support case up to the board of directors... *lol*. You just have to be patient about the matter. It's not impossible, but may require a lot of paperwork. I'm sure it's legit, but despite their best intentions, registering this software to your Adobe ID is something you cannot circumvent. It may not be an issue now, but it will be when you upgrade one day...

  • Buy fmis3 license second hand

    Hey
Is it legal to buy fmis3 license second hand?
    Best Regards
    Michael

Ask the person you are buying the phone from to provide the original proof of purchase for the phone. If you do not know the seller personally I would be very cautious about purchasing the phone. There are many many stolen, hacked and jailbroken phones out there and these will only cause you grief down the road.

The seller should have given you the original disk so that you can reinstall as needed. But it likely was a single-user license (which really means single computer) so you can only have a copy on one computer at a time. If the seller didn't give you the disk he is probably still using the software on his new Mac. Your best option to get any of the iWork apps to use in OS X 10.6.6 or later is through the Mac App Store. You can then install them on any Mac you have that has access to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID.

If the machine was upgraded to Lion 10.7.x by the original owner then you bought an illegal license of Lion and also of any other applications that the seller  said came pre-installed, this assumes the seller did not include original install media. In that case you need to contact the seller for the original install DVDs that came with the machine re-install up to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then purchase Mountain Lion ($20) and the applications you want or need. If the seller cannot come up with the original install discs then you can buy them from a nominal cost from AppleCare..

  • Tiger second hand

I have just bought two second hand discs on eBay for what was described as a Full Install version of Tiger for iMac G5. They won't install on my PowerBook G4 - I gather from previous discussion posts that they are machine specific. Have I been done? Would it be illegal anyway? -even if the OS was no longer in use on its original machine? With Microsoft you can pass the copies to a third party if you no longer use them - I believe. Is Apple different here? Have I lost my money? Any help much appreciated.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello Stephen:
If your powerbook has the proper hardware for Tiger, a retail install version of OS X should work. I would go back to the eBay seller and demand my money back.
As an aside, you have pointed out to others, I hope, possible pitfalls for buying software from eBay. I use eBay myself, but never for software.
The license agreement for the software will answer your other question.

  • If i buy a second hand apple computer will i get the rights to the apps

hiya im an imac noob and need some assistance.
ive always used p.c.'s which i cant reformat and build with my eyes shut.
ive bought a second hand imac from ebay which has the latest os installed and tonnes of apps. the seller is leaving them all on for me.
however i know nothing of the licensing involved with apps.  only the ipad.
when i put in my own icloud itunes account info will it delete all the apps that came with it? will i beable to use them and will i beable to update them? what about security?  if i dont delete all the stuff will it somehow sync with his account? this system is going to have my personal stuff on like the bank and private business letters etc.
what if i restore will i get the original os that came from the factory and lose everything or will it not even have an os on it??
    its an i3 21.5 mid 2010 model 3.06 ghz
and lastly what apps come with an imac from factory. so if i reset what would i have?  and does the imac use the same app store as the ipad?  will i beable to use the same apps that ive already bought.  this was a bit of a pain when i updated from ipod to ipad. now im upgrading even bigger!

old style programs would be tied to the machine
newer app store could could an issue as they would be tied to the appleID

  • Can I sale my original copy of Aperture on the second hand market?

    Dear fellow members,
I would be interested to know what policy Apple Co. has regarding the resale of its software on the second hand market. Precisely, if I sale a software which I don't use anymore to another person, will this person be able to correspond his/her name to the original license key program?
    In my case,
I wish to sell my Aperture application to someone, as my camera isn't supported. I already registered Aperture under my name several months ago...
Will the new user be able to register it under his own name as he wishes ?

Yes you can. Refer to the license agreement which can be found on Apple's Aperture site. This can only be done once by the original owner.

  • Upgrading Indesign CS2 to CS4 on second hand G5

Hi. I've just bought a second hand G5 from an auction. It has a working Indesign CS2 loaded but I don't know if its legal. A 20 digit number appears in the 'About Indesign' pane. I'm guessing this is the serial number. Is this correct? I would like to buy an upgrade to Indesign CS4 but I'm worried it won't install. Can anyone give advice on how I find out if my CS2 will accept the upgrade. I have my own boxed version of Indesign Design Collection with ID2.0 but unfortunately I dont think I can upgrade from that version at all.
    Thanks for any advice. Deb.

    > It has a working Indesign CS2 loaded but I don't know if its legal.
It's not. In order to be legal, the seller must fill out a license
transfer form and send it to Adobe. Absent that, legally, you should
    uninstall it.

  • Activation on second hand copy of Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design premium student

My son attends Middle Tennessee State Univerversity. I was considering buy this second hand(used) for him. Will he be able to used this? Thanks for your help.
    Mike

Buying second hand is always a gamble... it requires knowing the seller well enough to trust them to stand up for you when any trouble starts.  Here is something that the seller needs to do to make it a legitimate sale...
    Reselling Adobe Software
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/transfer-product-license.html
As far as whether or not your son will be able to use it, that is not clearly enough stated to be able to determine whether it is a question of...
    1) is your son capable of using the software - no offense intended
    2) will the software be of any use for your son as it relates to his schoolwork or interests
    3) is your son's system cabapble of running the software...  as a minimum, see if the trial version works before buying  (Download Adobe CS5 Free Trials – All Direct Links without Akamai | ProDesignTools) - if so, just use the serial number from the purchase to activate the trial to full use
    4) there's always one more than you can think of...
What you might consider instead of a second hand purchase is to help your son purchase the student version of the CS6 software instead.  The discount you will get (I think it's usually about 60% off) might make it worthy of consideration, especially since it will be a more up to date release of the software.

  • How do I replace someone else's Mac ID with my own? Bought iPhone second hand. Previous owner re-set the phone but his ICloud account stayed on now my phone. He uses his macID on his new iPhone now?? Any ideas, as this issue is blocking my access to iTune

How do I replace someone else's Mac ID with my own?
Bought iPhone second hand on TradeMe.
Previous owner re-set the phone but his ICloud account stayed on now my phone. He uses his AppleID on his new iPhone now and, understandably, does not want to give me his password. Any ideas?? Please.
This issue is blocking my access to iTunes and any other file from my home computer. It keeps on telling me that I have to autorise my computer to pass on files, yet, it seems, for all this to happen, I need to get logged in through the phone's Apple ID. This of course is different to my one on my computer - and I have no password for it.
This phone is not stolen!! I payed still a fair bit for it. Am still in contact with the previous owner. He doesn't know how to fix the problem either.
    Would appreciate any suggestion ????
    Thanks
    SamSings

    Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.

  • The case of the mysterious hidden content - second hand iMac

Dear people with more knowledge than me... (i.e. dear everyone...)
I have recently purchased a second hand intel iMac (late 2006 model) to replace my trusty (but noisy) Powermac G4 Mirror Door Drive. It was purchased 'wiped' with a fresh install of Lion.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a backup of my old hard drive (or at least the 60GB partition of it that I was using - I had Tiger installed on it) and then used the Migration Assistant to re-create an image of Zion in the wide expanses of the new promised land (250GB capacity).
All seemed to go well (but time consuming - it took several days to port everything to/from my USB external hard-drive). A few days later, when I checked About this mac I was shocked to discover that I only had 5GB of storage remaining.
I did a little poking about and realised I had left a couple of user profiles hanging around during my pre-Migration Assistant faffing. These duplicated much of what I had later migrated over more comprehensively, so I deleted these additional user profiles and this freed up a further 58GB or so.
My system information now tells me that I have
    249.2 GB Capacity
    63.69 GB Available
    185.5 GB Used
    The used component consists of:
    Audio 137.47 GB
    Movies 7.03 GB
    Photos 9.74 GB
    Apps 3.34 GB
    Backups 0
    Other 27.94 GB
However, when I go through all my available files and folders using the Finder, the grand total of space that I have used comes to around 88GB:
My home folder (the only user profile I didn't delete) 42.98 GB
Desktop 4.09 GB (I know, I know, clean your room...)
    Applications 2.31 GB
    Documents 2.8 MB (yes MB)
    Movies 0
    Music 38.59 GB
    Photos 385 KB (yes KB)
    Total ± 80GB
Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the disk partition I Migrated over was only 60GB in total (?!), where on earth are the other 97.5 GB of files, and how can I see/delete them to free up drive space I thought I had...?
...I imagine that the audio, movies etc., that are unaccounted for actually belong(ed) to the previous owner of the iMac. What I don't know how to do is see/access/delete them to free up disk space. There are no additional users other than my own account that I can see. That's not to say they are not there.
    What can I do?
Thank you in anticipation of any help or advice.

the (hidden) folder _CCC Archives takes up a whopping 107 GB, much of which consists of multiple copies of the same audio files (due to poor file management and copies of copies, I think..). I'm now looking for a utility that will be able to locate and list duplicate files so I can verify that the _CCC Archives folder files are replicated elsewhere.
I use CCC, but not the "archive" feature (since my main backups are made with Time Machine).
According to it's Help, that folder contains the backup copies of files that had been changed on the "source" drive.
But this large folder is on your internal HD, right?  Here's what I think happened:
When you made the original CCC clone from your old Mac, you selected the option to "archive" the copies of things that had been changed.  For some period of time, it did that.
Later, when you used Migration Assistant, it copied all those old files from the clone (via the Other files and folders on <HD name> option) back on to your new internal HD.
So yes, the files there should be prior versions of things on your system.
There are various options to have CCC manage those files.  You can assign a certain size to it, and it will delete the oldest files when necessary to make room for new ones;  or "prune" files after a specified number of days, etc.
Click Help in the CCC menubar, then CCC help, then review the Backup and archiving settings section:

  • I restore and upgrade my Second Hand iPhone 4s and unfortunately the Find My iphone is ON. Is there a way to Activate it since I cannot contact the previous owner?

I bought an Ipad 4 for my wife and iPad Air 2 for my daughter and I have just bought a Macbook Pro with retina display for me. The whole family is an Apple products fan due to its reliability and security. Never know that it could be a disadvantage also. I bought a second hand iPhone 4s from a friend as he is short in caash, and I've been using it for awhile. I "restore and upgrade it" without thinking or checking the Find my iPhone settings, unfortuately it is turned ON. Although the previous owner removed the phone lock, I never asked for his icloud account as I intend to use the phone only for calling. I cannot contact him as his contacts and email address were erased when I restore the iPhone.
I have learned a hard lesson since Apple security is impregnable, my iPhone 4S will just be an expensive paper weight.

    no.
without the previous owners credentials the phone is useless to you.
