Second hard drive added but can't save any files to it

My 250 GB hard drive failed and was replaced under warrantee (thank God I had backed it up a week earlier)
I had the operating system and application loaded on the 250GB drive and everything works fine. I had the dealer add a 500 GB Seagate Ultra 16 for storing all my data. I have a 500 GB external hard drive for back up. I am not able to save any data or create folders in the 500GB internal hard drive. My system profiler shows that its loaded. What do i need to do so taht i can use it for storing my data.

The drive must first be partitioned then formatted:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

I had a second hard drive added to my Mac Pro.  How do I format it and not effect my orginal hard drive?

Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above.  Select the new disk on the list at the left.  Click the erase tab.  Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice.  Then click the erase button.
That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase.  You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition.  Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click Apply button to create the partitions.
Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them.  So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose.  You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.

I have macbook pro 13" I want to know how to copy files from my mac to the external Toshiba Hard Drive. I can't even delete files from my external hard drive. please help me my macbook HD is almost full and I have to copy my images to the Toshiba HD

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • I can't save any file on externals disk

Big externals disk (above 100 GB) appears with orange color on the lateral bar. I can't save any file in this externals disk, I only can copy or read files from this disk. However that is possible in small external disk (16, 8GB or below) that appears with white color on lateral bar.
How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks

Check the Format of the external drive as it might be formatted for PC read/write but Mac Read only ?
Select in then hit command-I and look under 'Format' - NTFS is PC 'standard' - if you want a drive to be read and written to by both PC's and Mac's then you need to format it as FAT32

  • Can't save any file with any name-InDesign CC

can't save any file with any name-file DBTmp4376-863643269 is damaged (error code:0)
    InDesign CC, OS version 10.9.1
I explored solutions to failure in background task alert which did not work. Been using adobe products since they came on the scene. Nothing like this. Please help.

    I'm using version 9.2.
Yes, it started with a new file. Support gave me the solution to save it to my desktop which worked. When I put it back in the original folder and opened/save it would not save to that folder. Created a new folder and was able to open & save to the new folder. That seems to be a workable solution. How a folder can become corrupt is a bit scarey.
In experimenting with solutions I received another error "failure in background task alert" and discovered CS5 problems with background task.
However the solutions for CS5 did not work in my incidence.
I sure would like to prevent this from happening again. If you have any insights please share them. Otherwise I will just accept the experience as another computer workaround and be thankful that I have it.
    Thanks for responding.

  • Hard Drive Crash - FCP can't read QT files

    Hey all,
I had an external drive crash but was able to save the data last year. I'm trying to revisit an old project, but FCP doesn't recognize the quicktime files.
Originally FCP wouldn't open the project file, but after doing some poking around I read that if I opened the project file in TextEdit and just hit Save, FCP would recognize it. Sure enough this worked.
But now FCP doesn't recognize the quicktime media files. I've tried to import them into a different project, but all the files are greyed out. I changed the tab to All File Types from Standard Files and selected a file, but I get the error message
1 Files Recognized, 0 Access Denied, 1 Unknown.
The files plays perfectly in Quicktime 7 and 10 though. And if I open the file in Quicktime and save as a different name or save to a different location, FCP will import it. But I'm dealing with over 100 Quicktime media files and I'm trying to avoid having to individually open each one and save to a different location (doubling the amount of hard drive space I'm using).
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    miguel

I wonder if DigitalRebellion's FCS maintenance would help this one?
I suspect it's just an issue with the type/creator codes not being set correctly. QT Repair would fix this but it'd take longer because it would be checking for other problems at the same time. I've been thinking of adding a simple type code repair for these sorts of situations though.
So you can use the above file renaming utilities to change the file extension or use something like Type and Creator Changer to change the type codes:
    http://alphaomega.software.free.fr/typeandcreatorchanger/Type%20And%20Creator%20 Changer.html
(Creator should be TVOD and Type should be MooV)

  • Replacing hard drive ... can I save my iWeb and iPhoto folders?

Hi, I'm giving in my MacBook Pro for repair tomorrow. Is it possible to save what I have in my iWeb to transfer over to a new hard drive as well as my iPhoto folders?

Is your Macbook going in for repair because the HD is broken?
Then it is not possible to get back your file's If the HD is damaged and doesn't work, then you can't get your file's back easy. There are some company's who can do this, but those costs a enormous lot off money!
Is the HD is going to be replace for a bigger or faster drive?
Yes, then you can put the HD in a external encosure. This will make it possible to acces the disk with the USB or FireWire port on your Mac.
This is a nice and cheap enclosure:
    http://www.cooldrives.com/usbesal2hadr1.html
You can always try to put a broken HD in such a enclosure. Sometime's you are really lucky and can still get back the file's.
Always have a back-up off your important Data!
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • External Hard Drive mounts, but can't be selected or opened

I have a 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive. When I plug it into the Firewire 800 port of my 13" Unibody MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard), the drive shows up on my desktop and in Finder windows, but when I try to access the drive, or "select" it, I get the message "The alias "[name of drive]" can't be opened because the original item can't be found". If I select the fix it option, it gives me a finder window to identify the item to which I want it to refer (the hard drive), but when I select the hard drive in this window I get the same message. I've used Disk Utility to verify the disk and it says that it is fine. Also, I have two other external drives, a smaller WD drive and a smaller Seagate, and they both mount and are accessible. Any thoughts?

having the same issue with a mounting a hard drive that drovers is. any solutions? funny thing as that the drive will mount on a G5 running 10.5.8. have spent several hours on the phone with apple help to no avail. final suggestion was to wipe drive and reformat. cant't do this as I do not have enough space to back-up to. Would appreciate any suggestions.

  • Second hard drive installed but fails to appear in disk utility

I have installed the original 160GB into the second HD bay of my Dual 1.8 G5, and have had little success of it working. I say little success because one time (not the first time) it appeared on the desktop and I was able to view and run apps. from it. However, with each additional boot it has not been visible on the desk top, system profiler, or disk utility.
?Why did I install the original Hard drive in the second bay?
Just before leaving the country I sold my mother this computer, just before delevering the computer it crashed to catastrophie. She took the computer to
a certified apple repair facility, and they removed the drive, and installed a new drive in HD bay 1. In addition, they sold her an external firewire case that which the original drive could be installed in and therefore connected to the G5.
I would rather work through this problem than use the external drive, so Please Help.

You may need to prepare yourself for a "World of Hurt" from your wife...
Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.)

  • Is it possible to install CS3 on an external hard drive so I can edit on any PC it's attached to?

I think this would be fantastic if it could be done, as my PC's internal hard drive is not that spacious or fast, and the added ability of being able to plug in a hard drive to another computer and edit on it would be great.

    >That Registry information is REQUIRED for a Windoze program to run
For the sake of accuracy I must point out that this statement is incorrect. I regularly write MS Windows software that does not require the use of the Windows Registry to work.
Use of the Registry is not a requirement of the Windows OS. Application developers can use it or not as desired.

  • From hard drive to premiere - can I import the file structure as well?

I got a hard drive from a client where all assets I need are in perfect order (video, audio, music, animation, graphics, etc.) which means it's a quite complex yet reasonable structure with lots of subfolders. Is there a way to import all the assets with all folders into Premiere? Or do I have to recreate the whole structure in Premiere one by one by hand (which would be cumbersome to say the least)?
    PS
I thought many people have asked this before but actually I couldn't find the answer (maybe I used the wrong keywords).

Are all 50 folders in one directory?
If so, open that directory and drag all 50 folders
to Premiere in one single action.
If you select multiple folders and drag them to Premiere,
Premiere will retain the individual folder names and content
and convert them into individual Bins.
    note:
If your media files include some types of media that have
their own proprietary folder structure, those assets should be
    imported using the Media Browser.
Import assets from file-based sources with Media Browser
    http://helpx.adobe.com/content/help/en/premiere-pro/using/importing-assets-tapeless-format s.html#import_assets_from_file_based_sources_with_media_browser
..it seems very common that you arrange all your assets before you import them.
Aside from keeping all Project related assets in a common location,
I never spend time arranging media into folders and sub-folders
outside of Premiere... I do all organization of media within Premiere..

  • Can't save any files ever since the update to Maverick.

    Hello everybody,
Everytime I try to save a file the "save as" box pops up but as soon as I select a folder to save the file to....it flashes and closes.
It's definitely an issue of the OS because it happens in any application when attempting to save.
The only way I've worked around it is by saving is to the default location and then moving the file to it's intended location.  It's a major hassle and it makes me think there's more wrong with the update.   As much as I love the enhancements, I regret upgprading.
I would welcome any suggestions on what to do.  Or am I just stuck in waiting for an FIX from Apple?  I hope not.
Thanks everybody in advance for what you can do.
    Cheers,
