Second Hard drive formatting some help please!

Hi, I just installed a second SSD in place of my superdrive, a sandisk Extreme. Now however I cannot format the drive to use it... My enclosure for the superdrive has not arrived so I cannot use the OSX leopard disc to format the drive! any suggestions? The disk appears in the disk utility but gives an error message when trying to "erase" (format) the drive. If anyone knows hows to format the drive let me know! This is very frustrating because my system SSD is full! The following picture is the error I get:
System:
2011 MBP 13" 2.8 Ghz i7
intel HD 3000
16 Gb of G. Skill RAM
SSD1: OCZ Vertex 3
SSD2: Sandisk Extreme

I'm always sadened when I see where someone hasn't been making backups that they can boot from (ie, clone) as part of their backup and maintenance strategy.
Apple Disk Utility -> RESTORE tab, can also copy Source => Target
CCC is nice if you want to copy/move your /Users/my_account to another drive
(Also essentially you need to be able to boot off another drive to repair your system.)
Replacing the system boot drive with new faster drive really helps. Having everything on one drive tends to bog down and be sluggish compared to having things spread out on multiple drives.
/Users/my_account/Movies (or Pictures and other folders)
- can be relocated to where you want.
One of the best values in performance for boot drive has been the 640GB WD Caviar. Cost of disk drives have actually been going up, at least some vendors, lately.
No one I know whould say you can't or shouldn't use a drive larger than 400GB, other than keeping the operating system on fast small lean and mean, and not load it up with a lot of media files and such.
There was a 400GB WD drive that wasnt' compatible 4 yrs ago with G5s; Apple didn't update their hardware requirement to list larger drives when they came out later (currently, 2TB drives are being supported in most new systems today).

  • AEBS no longer "sees" SUB hard drive... help please.

Purchased a new aluminum iMac, MacBook for the wife, AEBS, and a 250GB SimpleTech Pininfarina USB drive about 3 months ago. All have worked flawlessly until today. AEBS will not recognize the USB drive as of today. Powered everything down, started everything back up, still nothing. Tried using the AirPort Utility, nothing the utility does not show the drive at all. Plug the USB drive directly into my iMac and it mounts and works perfectly. Plug it into the AEBS, nothing.
What changed today to make it stop working? Anyone have this issue or have a fix? This is quite maddening. All solutions appreciated.
The USB drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

    Hi Starrainne
If your logic board is defunct, it may not be possible to access the Hard Drive through Firewire Disk mode.
How to use FireWire target disk mode, but that would be the first thing to try as you may save yourself having to remove it.
If you can make no connection with the hard drive through that method then the next option is to physically remove the HD from the eMac, which is partly shown in these pictures.
    http://www.wilko.com/emac/
The HD is attached to the entire logic board assembly which also has to be removed.
Once removed you would then house it in an HD enclosure, examples are shown here:
    https://eshop.macsales.com/search/HD+enclosure
effectively making it an external Hard Drive.
With the HD in the enclosure, connecting it to the MacBook via a Firewire cable it will appear as another volume. In this instance you do not need to use Fire Target Disk mode to see it, as it is now removed and you are not required to boot into it. It will just appear as another volume on your Desktop allowing you to copy the data off your old drive and onto your MacBook.
There will be quite a bit of work involved doing all of this, mainly because your eMac is such a compact and integrated product that will take some patience to dismantle.

  • Hard Drive (Maybe) Problem - Help Please!!

Hey guys. I got a 3rd Generation 15GB iPod. My hard drive is the problem here. When its not in action, very quietly but for surely, you can hear some high-pitched noises that usually don't occur. It sounds like a twitching sound, or twitchy sort of a sound (just as the word "twitchy" sounds like") What has gone wrong with my iPod? Thank you all!

I have to mention that I am not a techician, I may not understand the reason behind, I could be wrong and my suggestion may not work in your case. But, I must say that all the suggestions I made are basically from my past experienece fixing more than 10 iPods (from my friends and family members). I do not and have no intention to make a suggestion purely from what I heard and read (otherwise I would indicate). These have been tested and proved to work in my cases. I also have to deal with iPod problems such as:-
    1. Sad iPod
    2. Folder with exclamation mark
    3. iPod failed to be recognized by the computer
    4. broken iPod with 'clicking' sound
I can simply post a link from the apple article - which would suggest you to do a Reset and Restore actions, however, most of the users would agree with me that the iPod with the aforementioned problems would not able to get mounted with the computer. In that case, how could you do a Restore. Should I just suggest the user to send their iPods for repair?
I have tried myself with different ways, and I discovered a trick to solve the above problems. First, we must understand what is the problem behind - in my opinion, the problem mainly caused by the head of HD of the iPod getting stuck at a certain point and unable to read the sector properly. If an iPod is an external Hard Disk, how are you going to fix it, I believe that all of us would suggest one to do a Reformat. Right, but unfortunately, the iPod could not be mounted, so what next? I find an interesting way - when the iPod is formatted in PC and connected with a Mac computer, it will "Force" mount, then why not do a Restore there. And once it has been completed, re-connect it with your original PC, and this time with the iPod being formatted to a different format, a window will pop up, indicating that it cant read the iPod and ask whether you would like to do a reformat. Then open the iPod updater and click Restore (back to PC version). Again, interestingly, it works the other way as well i.e. Mac's iPod fixed with a Window based PC.

  • New hard drive issues - need help please!

So I just installed a new hard drive on my Ideapad S10 and having the following issues.  I get a PXE-E61 : Media test failure check cable & PXE-M0F : Exiting  Broadcom PXE rom message.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive to check the connection and still get the error, it's a brand new drive.  Also I noticed in the BIOS that the hard drive is showing up under ssd disk and SATA hdd shows - none.  If I restore the BIOS settings to original then the drive will show up under ssd but the SATA controller mode will show the AHCI setting instead of the Compatible setting it should use.
I'm really stuck here and don't know what else to check.  My orginal drive is dead so I'm trying to get this working so I can install windows.  If anyone could help out it would be greatly appreciated - Thanks!

Full Disclosure:  I don't know your machine.
That PXE error probably doesn't indicate a problem - or not the problem, anyway.  Your machine boots, doesn't see an operating system on the hard drive (or doesn't see a hard drive at all) and tries to boot over the network and fails. That's what the PXE error is about.
As to the SATA problems, what happens when you boot your Windows install media?  Does that see a hard drive?

  • I cannot open my hard drive...help please

I cannot open my hard drive.I have no idea why not.
Everything was perfectly fine this morning, I shut down, and nothing was different.
Later today I turned on the computer again to do some work, and when I click the hard drive icon it will not open, it seems that the whole finder or hard drive "resets" or "redoes itself"
No error message displays of any kind.
I have not installed anything or changed anything at all recently.NOTHING.
I already tried putting in my Tiger disc, and ran first aid, verified and repaired the preferences, and verified and repaired the disc, and after taking out the Tiger original disc...no, that didn't help either.
As far as I can tell everything else is fine, Safari works, my calculator and calendar and I Tunes and all that works fine.
    HELP

UUUGGHHHH ... On a friends computer right now...
I had to start all over from the disc, after I, as the "other user" with (Admin. priviledges) went and tried to change the permissions of "original me", and it wouldn't let other user/me #2 do it, and so I kept trying, but then I couldn't get back into original me, it wouldn't let me login, kept saying you cannot login at this time, and I couldn't stay on Safari in user#2 long enough to try and write you before it "blinked out", so, I put in the original Tiger disc from the beginning and did an an archive install,BUT did not check the keep users and settings checkbox, so, my budget and things I was working on were kept intact....YEAH...but the original problem was never determined.
I hope that does not happen again, I still don't even know what caused it all in the first place.
THASNK YOU SO MUCH !!! for trying to help me.

  • Locked myself out of a hard drive...Help please!

I was playing around with info on a hard drive and I clicked "no access". I cant get it back. It is not even visible on my desktop. The only reason I did this is that I was looking for ways to keep other people out.
    How do I recover it???

Solved it! Wow! I found a good reason to keep a backup of 10.3.9 around.
I booted into my backup 10.4.9 hard drive and it still didnt show up. So I booted into an old version of 10.3.9 and there was a folder on the desktop with a minus sign in it. I was able to change the permissions from there. I then re-booted into 10.4.9 and there it was. Phew!!

It must be a near impossible task for Lenovo to update the list of supported devices for every accessory as new models come out.
Perhaps these pages will help reassure you.

  • Message comes up on startup: You are unable to log in to the user account "terry" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.  This is a late 2012 mac mini with a 64g SSD and 1 Gig hard drive installed.  Help please!

As in title.  I have tried resetting the password. Nothing works to get me past this problem.  The computer was working fine before this happened.

I have just purchased this mini and it was wiped to a virtual new unit.  I have done an install of the OS up to 10.9.5 and then installed my purchased software that is stored on iTunes through wifi.  The computer was working fine although sometimes a bit slow.  I have it set up with the SSD as the program drive and the 1T drive for data which I have no files on it yet.  I am the only account on the computer so cannot log in on another account.  I booted up holding the Alt key and then used the restore drive which brought up the Utilities window.  I then opened Terminal and typed in "resetpassword" and then closed out and restarted the computer.  It seems to recognize my new password but still gives me the same message as above.
I do have an Apple OS system 10.7 on USB if that needs to be used to reinstall the OS to fix the problem. Thanks for taking the time to help me with this problem.

  • Re-imaged hard drive library gone, help please

I've have lost everything including everything on my itouch.
Is there a way to retrieve everything I've already paid for?
    itunes loads but its empty.

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link you'll be able to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • Hi! I got movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? need some help please!!

Hi! I got Movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? When I start playing the movie a message pops up and says "a required codec is not available". I tried flip4mac, xvid, divx already and still not playing my video. need some help please!! thanks.

Although vlc mentioned above is a much more powerful and better player you could try installing Perian if you insist on using the quicktime player.  It may supply the codec it needs.
Not sure why you wouldn't be able to play straight avi files though in quicktime.

  • Best way to format a second hard drive in a MacBook Pro?

I put a SSD in my MacBook Pro and I am wondering what is the best way to format the hard drive that i am putting in the place of the optical drive. I could set it put in raid configuration but I'm pretty sure that it takes the speed from the slower drive. Making my upgrade pointless. Should I put the hard drive in and format it to Mac OS extended (journaled). Is this my best option. Will i only be able to put applications on the second hard drive or will i only be able to put on files such as media, word docs ect.?

    Hello,
I read some of your responces to other computer issues. Do you have any thoughts that may help my situation. I posted this earlier. I try to use my OS X HD to reinstall but I only get so far and I am told install can't go any further.
    Detailed Discription;
    Everything is running-phizz-black screen
Start button-enter password-gray bar at bottom of screen-
Gray bar fills 1/4 - computer shuts off
So I looked around on wifes computer and find a few sequences to try and fix.
    didn't work.
So I am here now after accessing reinstall  from my os x disc and a couple other discs to choose from.
    Nothing is working-need help
    Past history;
from the begining my mac never carried a charge. Then it stopped charging completely.
I just lived with it-but now this-christ man it ticks me off.
Anyways I would appreciate all the hel I could get, thanks
    Thank You

  • Installing a second hard drive in a G4 - advice needed please

    Hi......
I have a G4 Quicksilver (2002) model and I also have a G4 Digital Audio model as well which is currently surplus to requirements.....
I would like to take out the 20Gb hard drive from the older G4 and put it into the Quicksilver as a second internal hard drive (for extra storage capacity....)
I have seen the instructions regarding installing a second hard drive and it doesn't seem to complicated....
I just want to check because the 20Gb hard drive has the operating system on it for the older G4.....
Do I have to fire up the machine and erase the hard drive and then take it out and put it into the Quicksilver...?
Or am I able to simply take it out, put it in the Quicksilver and erase it when I restart the machine....?
I don't have the original installation discs for the OSX...
I talked to a Mac technician at work and he said I can just take out the 20Gb hard drive and put it in as a 'slave' drive and I have to 'bend some pins' (I think he said) when I install it.........and I can then erase the second hard drive and use it as storage.....
any advice would be greatly appreciated.....
    Thanks

    Hi, craigkelleigh -
Ony many drives the label showing jumper pins configurations will be on the end of the drive, just above the block of pins; on other drives it may be on the top, rarely on the bottom.
The block of jumper pins is at the same end of the drive where the data cable (wide, flat ribbon cable) and the power connector plug in.
It is best to move the jumpers before installing the hard drive - they're quite small and hard to manipulate in a confined space. Important - do not move jumper pins if the drive is powered up (running).
As far as removing and installing the drive, you can view/download a how-to PDF or movieclip from these pages -
    G4 (Digital Audio) - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75313
    G4 Quicksilver - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75314
In addition, with regard to specific jumper positions, that depends on the make (and sometimes the model) of the drive. There are some resources available on-line, such as jumper diagrams for specific drives. If you would give us the specific make (manufacturer) and model number of your hard drive (that info should be shown on labels affixed to the drive), we may be able to direct you to a specific website page with that info.

  • I had a second hard drive added to my Mac Pro.  How do I format it and not effect my orginal hard drive?

I had a second hard drive added to my Mac Pro.  How do I format it and not effect my orginal hard drive?

Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above.  Select the new disk on the list at the left.  Click the erase tab.  Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice.  Then click the erase button.
That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase.  You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition.  Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click Apply button to create the partitions.
Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them.  So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose.  You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.
