Second Harddrive cause G4 to Freeze up

New to Mac but need help:
I had a problem with my enclosure harddrive (see other post, never got help) so I added a year old hard drive I had in a old PC. I booted up, I took some files off it and formated it. Moved some files over and it seemed to work. Then the Mac frozed! The mouse stopped and I couldn't do anything. I rebooted and after about 2-3min it frozed up again. I unhooked the newer harddrive and so far no freeze ups. So it has to be the harddrive I added. Any help?
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
Memory: 1.25 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2

Drives that are installed in external enclosures are typically configured as master, which may or may not require a jumper (depending on the hard drive manufacturer). The problem occurs when the drive is removed from the enclosure for internal installation and a jumper is required for the desired/required configuration in the computer. In your G4 MDD, I'd recommend configuring the drive as Cable Select, using an appropriate size jumper. A local computer shop would likely give you one, if you don't have a compatible spare. I'd also recommend installing the drive in the rear of the case, because that connection uses the faster ATA-100 bus, compared to the slower ATA-66 bus designated for hard drives installed in the front bays.

I was watching Netflix on the left side of the screen and reading about computer hardware on the right side, both using Safari. Then the screen froze and the cursor froze one second afterwards. I could still hear audio, but the computer was unresponsive: Force Quit didn't work, mouse didn't move, no keyboard input, etc. I held down the power button to force shutdown and then powered it back up again.
The same thing happened about an hour later. I did a full system scan for viruses and malware using two different utilities, both of which reported a clean iMac. I checked the hard drive with Disk Utility and got nothing. I started up using Apple Hardware Test (hold D while booting) and did a quick test which reported nothing. The full test, with 32GB of RAM, will take an entire day.
I have noticed this freezing up when watching video online, mostly through Netflix, but also through YouTube and Vimeo. I thought it was Safari, but I tried it with Firefox, Chrome, and Opera and they all end up freezing at some point. I can't tell how I'm making it freeze or how long it takes to freeze, but it happens when viewing video. It does not happen when watching video through iTunes - only online, regardless of playback method (Flash and   Silverlight both cause it).
I dual-boot Windows and do not have the problem in Windows 7.
I thought it might be a problem with my video card, but I can play FIFA and Skyrim for a couple hours without issue. I thought it might be a problem with Flash, but as far as I can tell Netflix uses Silverlight and that was what caused the initial freezes.
    Any ideas?

I'm not really sure what you're looking for. This is some of the lines from Console before the most recent BOOT_TIME. Then I pasted the contents of System Diagnostic Reports Kernel_2013_04_27 etc., but I don't know if that's what you're looking for. That report was awhile ago, so it doesn't seem like any of my recent problems have been recorded.

  • G5 PowerPC 1.6GHz Second Harddrive

Purchased second harddrive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 80Gb secondhand. Installed in top bay. Turned on computer. It didnt boot at all. Took out Seagate HD and turned on. Computer booted up no problem. Any suggestions as to why it would not boot up?

hi BDAqua. thanks for responding. I have not tried exchanging positions. I am a little worried I may damage my good harddrive and lose all my info if the Seagate is faulty. The same applies to asking a friend to format - I wouldnt be popular if it caused havoc. As you have mentioned a short, alarm bells are ringing.
Logic told me that the drive should work in either position but the computer failed to boot with both in place so I thought it best to sit back and ask for help.
This is only the second time I have added a harddrive, the first was in a G3 too long ago to remember otherthan it was not a problem. I think the Harddrive is defective so will contact the sellers. I dont want to take any risks.
    thanks for your help.

  • I'm listening to iheartradio through safari on my macbook pro, and two seconds into each song it freezes up and won't play

I'm listening to iheartradio through safari on my macbook pro, and two seconds into each song it freezes up and wont play the rest of the song.

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.

  • Test Scripts cause OPM to freeze

I am on a different project in my company, and on this second project whenever I run the test scripts or open any test scripts, OPM will freeze up. What would cause this? On rules for the other project, things are pretty snappy.
The differences between the two sets is that on the second project (the one that freezes) there are a lot of warnings about inconsistent capitalization, many relationships in the tests are unknown, and many of the relationships in the tests are not containment complete. I am slowly taking care of these issues. Is it possible that any of these could cause testing to be extremely slow?

Hello, it seems that it really is not something i'm installation to make this defect:
is happening to me again, this time I have not even installed anything but to sync the address book.
it is possible to happen when I turn off the PC while the phone is stuck with itunes running?

  • Using Mavericks Spelling and Grammar in Pages document causes Pages to freeze. Must Force Quit. Mavericks spell checker works OK in Text and Emails. How can I fix this problem?

Using Mavericks' Spelling and Grammar in a Pages document causes Pages to freeze, Must Force Quit. How can I fix this problem?
Mavericlks Spelling and Grammar works in Pages when used manually. And it works automatically in Text and email.

    Another autocorrect bug:
I type a lot of lyrics, which tend to cotain words like ’cause and ’em instead of because and them.
I've set up autocorrect instances to change a plain apostrophe with an ending, single curly quote for these words, but they are invariably changed to a beginning, single curly quote mark by Pages. The only way I can get the correct curly quote is to type over the wrong quote manually and hope that I don't have to edit the rest of the word again, as this would cause autocorrect to kick in again and change the quote to the wrong, beginning curly mark again.
Does anyone know how to get around this tedious problem?

  • Browse animation effects causing Bridge to freeze

Every time I select browse effects from the animation menu, Adobe Bridge launches (as expected).
When I navigate to the "Text/Blurs" folder and open it, Bridge freezes.
I know I can add an effect to my text without resorting to Bridge, but I'm following
Adobe's Classroom in a box and selecting this method to preview an effect is
    causing Bridge to freeze.

Make sure your AE and your Bridge are up to date. There was a problem in earlier builds. Also, the Animation Effects previews in Bridge are resource intensive little buggers. Make sure that you have allocated an even number of MB of ram to other apps and you're not starving your system. If you only have 8 GB give 4 to other apps and 4 to AE, if you have 16 then you can give 4 to others and 12 to AE.

  • My MacBook freezes occasionally...is there a way to bring it out of frozen?  What would be causing it to freeze?

My MacBook freezes @ least once a week.  I have to shut it down.  What might be causing it to freeze & is there another way to bring it out of frozen other than shutting it down?

Not enough free space on the disk can cause the system to freeze...
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space
Check the startup disk in case it needs repairing >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.5)  <  your profile
If that is correct, when you can, you need to update to v10.6.8
Updates are available from your Apple menu > Software Update...
Not enough RAM can cause the operating system to freeze also. You may want to consider increasing memory. To see how much memory you have installed click your Apple menu icon then click About This Mac. That will prompt the System Profiler. See Memory under Hardware on the left.

  • Re: Second Harddrive in Tecra A9

    I have a Tecra A9 12T article-nr.: PTS52E-01T02NGR
Because i have a SSD installed i'd like to remove the dvd rom and install a second harddrive.
i bought a harddrive bay with the right conectors, but allways when i start my computer he tells me:
"CD ROM error" and i can't find the option in the bios where i can change form CD-ROM to HDD.
Can someone help me? thank you!

    Hi
As far as I know the Tecra A9 cannot be upgraded with an slim select bay HDD adaptor.
From my knowledge this is possible with notebooks like Portege M400, S100, Tecra M9, Tecra S1, S3 or S4

  • Quitting Mail with no free disk space causes it to freeze.

I run out of disk space frequently and, as a result, have encountered one recurring problem.
Mail will attempt to retrieve new messages without disk space on which to store them.
After freeing disk space, Mail remains caught in a loop. Clicking "Get Mail" doesn't refresh the process. Attempting to quit causes Mail to freeze and only a force-quit will end the process.

  • Re: Satellite P200-137 missing second harddrive connection

My Satellite P200-137 is missing its second harddrive connection. Regarding the manual and the specifications there should be a second connection, but when I opened the second drive bay the only thing I saw was an empty space for the drive and some solder connections, but no sockets to plugin the drive.
Is this normal: does the 137 model only have one functioning harddisk connection? Is it possible to get the second drive-socket attached?

    > Regarding the manual and the specifications there should be a second connection
I think you didnt read the manual properly ;)
It says that this option is available on certain models
Fact is that a same notebook series can be equipped with different hardware parts.
So the specifications are always different.
The P200 series seems to support different motherboards and some motherboards are not outfitted with two HDD controllers. So the notebook supports tow HDD bays but the second HDD controller is available.
Yes, this is a little bit confusing but its definitely nothing wrong with your notebook ;)

  • Adobe pro 9.2 export to doc causes word to freeze

    Hi,
I have a PDF that I need to convert back to a word document.  I have Adobe Professional 9.2 running on Windows XP Pro SP3.  I open the PDF, export it to a Word Document.  Adobe goes through all 42 pages.  I try to open the resulting doc file in Word 2003 SP3, I only get the first 18 pages and word freezes at page 16.  Word won't do anything.  page 16 is just like the other pages.  I have to open task manager and kill winword.exe.  I have tried changing the various export settings and every combination I have tried causes word to freeze.  What is wrong?
    Thanks,

The only practical way to add them is to just add the pages. It sounds like you are trying to edit in Acrobat that is a bear of a problem. It is not an editor and the editing features should only be used as a last resort. You really should get the original documents and combine those, then make a new PDF. Another possibility is to save to WORD, text, or other format, combine the files, then create another PDF. Of course, you may likely lose formating and stuff when you save to WORD. Think of a PDF as a paper document (that kind of final form) and you have the idea. When we used to do this with typing, it meant that a whole page would have to be modified as a minimum.

  • Aborted automatic backup to Time Capsule causes machine to freeze

I have a MBP (Santa Rosa) 15" with 2GB RAM (the stock one I got with the MBP)and a newly arrived 500GB Time Capsule, connected via Airport.
I got 2 awful freezes in 4 days: mouse pointer stuck, no way to get back to work without a brutal shutdown (via power button).
I think I tracked down the problem, by looking at system.log.
In both cases the last (or nearly the last) records in the log refer to an aborted backup (I've set up Time Machine) because the machine is not connected to AC-power.
Here are the mentioned lines, after which only the boot sequence log appears.
    Apr 14 23:17:55 Macintosh kernel[0]: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount: /Volumes/MyVolume, pid 3158
Apr 14 23:17:56 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3162]: Not starting automatic backup, running on non-AC power source.
Apr 14 23:19:55 Macintosh com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.netauth.sysagent[3158]): Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 3161 PPID 1 check_afp
    Apr 18 21:07:32 Macintosh kernel[0]: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount: /Volumes/MyVolume, pid 1293
Apr 18 21:07:32 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1297]: Not starting automatic backup, running on non-AC power source.
As you can see in the first one there is an extra line that misguided me before, but it's probably some notice arrived late from a process. In that case I left the machine unattended for a few minutes, in the second one, I noticed the freeze almost immediately. Actually, the clock on the menu-bar was at 21:08 when it froze, so the effect of the freeze follows about 30sec/1min after the triggering event.
I also think that some of the troubles reported here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6967074 might be related to the same event and not to switching locations.

Well, I found a fix. I first moved the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file from the Preference folder to the desktop, just in case I needed in the future (it turns out I didn't). Then I rebooted my computer. Time Machine did not find the .plist file and so I had to select again the disk for backup on Time Capsule. Then I backed up and it finally completed the hourly backup and now it seems back on track with the hourly backups

  • Will not enough RAM cause iTunes to freeze?

My computer does not have the required RAM that Apple says you need for iTunes 9. Will this cause iTunes to freeze?

It's possible. Whenever a computer doesn't meet system requirements for a particular piece of software, it's possible the software may work just fine and it's also possible that some issues may be encountered. I ran iTunes 7 (required 512 MB RAM at least, as I recall) on an XP box with only 256 MB RAM. iTunes worked but lagged, and video playback was pretty much not an option.
    Hope this helps.

  • Data Migration to second Harddrive (like Hardwrk suggests)

I just built a second harddrive (ssd) into my mac. For the data migration, i followed the hardwrk suggestion, but this was for OSX Snow Leopard, so maybe that´s the reason why I now have both the new installed and the old system when i push "alt" key while booting, although the old system doesn´t exist any more. Now the question: is it possible to delete the "boot area" that the Harrdrive is not recognized any more as a bootable media? I don´t want to format it because there remains the user data and a windows partition. I only want to delete the actually not existing ability to boot, and the recovery partition.
