Second HD installation snag

I'm about to install a second hard drive (as slave) to my G4 and before I do I have a very simple question: How do I mount the drive using the "original screws" if I'm not replacing it but simply adding on to what already exists? No screws came with the drive (Western Digital Enhanced IDE "Caviar") so what do I do?
Not the most interesting problem, but one that I could really use help on as I've only seen illustrations of a G4 interior and don't know what to expect once "inside."
Any help would be appreciated as would any other suggestions. Thanks.
PowerMac G4 (AGP graphics)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hello! Below you'll find a video to guide you through. if the drive didn't come with screws then you have two choices. Either you'll have to take one from the old drive and go to a hardware store to get a match or do the easier thing which is use two of the four screws from the original drive. I usually place two screws diagonally from each other. The drive just needs to be secure and four screws is overkill. Tom

Hold down the option key during start up - you will be given the choice of which partition to use (Macintosh HD or Windows). I am having the same problem - Windows 7 seems to have installed but it goes to a blank black screen and there is nothing to do but force a reboot. I too have an i3 iMac... Windows 7 32-bit from original disc.

  • W520 second SSD installation

Hi all,I have a W520 and I would like to:Add a second hard drive where the optical drive is.I would like the second drive to be a SSD drive.I would like it to be at least 500Gb.I would eventually like this drive to become my C drive (if at all possible) I bought my W520 with a 160Gb Intel SSD drive that is almost full. My current BIOS is version 1.32 If some of the gurus on this support site could please help I would be grateful. I am a high school science teacher and use this machine especially to do some 3-d simulations of molecules and I am now constantly running into the – nearly out of memory – warning. I want to be able to work all the kinks out over the summer before school starts back up. It is critical that my current setup not be affected by this – I use the W-520 on a docking station to which I have a 30” monitor (display port) and a 24” Dell (DVI) attached. The W-520 also has a USB 3 external hard drive (4Tb) attached to it. Many thanks,Sam

Thank you harrisb for taking the time to respond to my posting. Oh! I have so many questions for you about your W520s.  Anyway, to the task at hand:
Could you point me to where I might find instructions on installing the 500Gb MSata card? Does Lenovo having something by way of instructions on doing this? I will google it but just wondered if you knew!
Once installed, can I simply copy over the entire C drive and then I would be all set?
Is there a specific protocol I need to be able to copy all the files over from my current 160Gb ssd?
There is a partition on my C drive with the software that came with my Lenovo. Do I just keep this as is and not mess with it at all.
Lastly, I bought a Pioneer BluRay/CD player to rip my CDs. It appears to be a lot faster than the optical that came with the machine. I was thinking of getting rid of the optical drive altogether and getting one of the large capacity SSDs. Would I need to upgrade the BIOS? What are the things that must be worked out when installing one of the Samsung drives you have alluded to in your posts online? Any particular place you would recommend I get the drives from (the mSATA and, if I go with it, the larger SSD?
Thank you for your time again.
    Sam
I'll try to answer in order:
    1. The installation for the MSata card is in the HMM for the W520. The card is located under the keyboard so you need to remove that (two screws)  from the normal position and just lay it back on the palmrest. The Crucial card comes with the screws, but there's already a screw in the place (1).
    2. You need to create an image of your existing SSD C: drive so that that can be placed onto the new MSata card for using it at a boot drive. I would also make a backup set for the factory software ifyou haven't already done so in the past.
    3. You can use either Ghost 15.0 or Acronis TIM to create the image and then use it to restore the image to the new card.
    4. You can't use the factory restore partition software once you have made a backup copy to DVD discs so you can just eliminate it from the restore.
    5. One of the reasons that I keep my CD-ROM in the ultrabay I sometimes need it for the restore process when some software has corrupted the OS (happens more times of the last 4 years than I can count)
If you want to replace the CD-ROM from the Ultrabay, you need to obtain a HDD caddy from Newmodeus. This will come with all of the needed screws to mount the new SSD card.
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=400
I've usually obtained my SSD drives from Newegg.com. I would also suggest that you upgrade your BIOS level to 1.42.

  • HP Envy TouchSmart 17 second drive installation issues

I decided to install a second hard drive beside the supplied 1TB. There is more than adequate information in
this site on the required caddy system, connector, and disassembly requirements. The second drive I installed
was a 630 GB model that I had previously used in an HP D7V 17" laptop with Vista (circa early 2008). The added
drive still included the formatting and files, but no OS, from its prior use.
The system would then not boot up; complaining that no operating system was available on the hard drive.
Apparently it was trying to boot from the second drive.
My question is: Must the added, previously used drive be blank with no previous OS formatting in order to be processed by
the supplied stock drive (running 8.1)? Any enlightenment will be greatly appreciated.

The HP Envy is the SUV of laptops
While the HP Envy TouchSmart 17 is big and heavy, it outperforms most ultrabooks
The build doesn’t feel very durable, as HP used plastic rather than metal on the body
For a big laptop, it has a respectable battery life of over 6 hours while web browsing
If there’s one thing you need to understand about laptops, it’s this: Portability will cost you. Want proof? Look no further than the HP Envy TouchSmart 17 (MSRP $999.99), a fully loaded desktop replacement that costs less than an entry level MacBook Air.
This big guy comes with a smattering of excellent specs, including a quad-core Intel i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard drive space, a CD/DVD drive, a full-HD touchscreen, and even a fingerprint scanner. For $999, this is a lot. In fact, for the same price, you can get HP’s Spectre 13 ultrabook, which has a weaker processor, half the RAM, and a fraction of the storage space, but does have portability.

  • Second License installation issue

I am trying to install my second license for CS5 and it is telling me that I am already booked up on two computers. This is impossible as I only had one computer until yesterday. Adobe, how does this get fixed? I don't want to deactivate the account on my tower as I will still be using that as well.

Contact Adobe support, they will reset your activation count.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 installation snag

Phooey on Adobe !!  I got a nice answer from Jeff for my problem getting an installation error when it got to loading the shared technologies into Windows 7.  Unfortunately, it didn't work either.  After a few other failed attempts I am returning it to Amazon.  At Amazon I found several others have had the exact same problem and also had no success.  I think there must be something wrong with the software, and I think Adobe should be ashamed at how they treat their customers.  At $72 this was not some el cheapo product and there should be some support for it other than an open chat room.

  • Installing CS5 on second computer (Installer failed To Initalize)

I have CS5 and want to install it on my laotop I already have it on my desktop Ihave down loaded adobe advisor it detetec's nothing wrong but I get error mesage ( installer faied to initilize )

"Installer Failed to initialize" is a generic error and we need to figure out what is causing the trouble. Most of the time, its an issue with the download that it was not successful or downloaded properly. So, in such cases, download the software again and make sure to compare the file size of the downloaded file with the file on the server. Lets check that in this case as well and make sure the download is complete.
Navigate to the log files in one of the following folders:
    • Windows 32 bit (XP, Vista, 7): \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Installers\
    • Windows 64 bit (XP, Vista, 7): \Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Installers
    • Mac OS: /Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers/
The log filename includes the product name and install date, followed by ".log.gz." The extension .gz indicates a compressed format.
Use a decompression utility such as Winzip or StuffIt to decompress the .gz file. Once uncompressed, the log file is a plain text file.
Open the .log file using WordPad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac OS).
Note: By default, log files open in Console on Mac OS. Select all of the text by pressing Command+A, and then copy and paste it into a text editor before continuing.
Scroll to the bottom of the log. Look in the --- Summary --- section for lines that start with ERROR: or FATAL and indicate a failure during the installation process.
Copy and Paste that SUMMARY section in here so that we can check the errors. You might also analyze the logs yourself.

  • Second instance installation SGA question

    Hi Everybody,
I have an Oracle 10g Database installed on a Solaris Server and the SGA of the Database is 3.9 GB. The Solaris System has 4 GB RAM.
Now I want to install another instance on the Solaris Server. How is it with the SGA? How much SGA can I give to the new instance and is there a problem when the two SGAs of the Instances have more than the 4 GB of the Solaris system (e.g. 3.9 (first instance) + 3.9 (second instance) ). The plan is that both instances will run at the same time.
    Thanks for any answer.
    Regards DocX

The first instance was installed by a third person and it seems that it calculates > the memory automatically because Shared, Large Pool and Buffer Cache are
shown as 0 and only the total SGA is shown as 3.9 GB.That means SGA autotuning is turned on, responsible parameter is SGA_TARGET (not SGA_MAX_SIZE). Often SGA_MAX_SIZE is not set, but derived from the sum of all memory structures or - if set - SGA_TARGET.
SGA_TARGET is dynamically modifiable (alter system set ...), while the database is open, but SGA_MAX_SIZE is not.
Because of its swapping/paging facilities the machine can handle more memory than available as physical RAM, but becomes slow. Oracle may show something like 'not enough memory', when you try to start the instance.
so Oracle does not handle the memory automatically like giving each instance only 2 GB physically memory although both have a SGA of 3.9 GBThere is no 'cross-instance' memory maintenance between Oracle instances.

  • Second Computer Installation

I believe we are permitted two (somewhere I read three) computer installations. I installed it on my laptop without too many incidents but when I tried to install on my iMac, I got the message that the installation code failed. Is there a trick to this I don't know about? Or do I need to pay for another license?

As this is the Extension Manager forum, can we confirm what application you are referring to? As it does not sound related to Extension Manager? Also, if you can send a screenshot that would be appreciated.

  • Second copy installation?

A few months ago, I purchased a copy of Acrobat XI, installed on my laptop.  Now I want to install my second copy on my desktop as permitted in the license agreement.  How do I do that?

If you look at the My Products section of your Adobe account there might be a link to download it there.
Yes, you can download the trial version and use your serial number to activate it to full use.  The trial version can be found in the Adobe product page for Acrobat...
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro.html
There is an alternate site where you can download it if you have any problems...
    http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-acrobat-xi-pro-standard-reader-direct-download-links.html
but for this site you need to follow the directions carefully for the links to work.

  • Seeking info/advice on second drive installation

My daughter recently gave me her old G4/400 Tower to use at our vacation home. It has only a 20GB drive, and I want to add a second internal drive. In looking at the various Western Digital drives compatible with Macs, I can't tell if they come with cables, mounting screws, etc. Does the middle connector of the ribbon cable plug directly into the new drive or is an additional cable required?
As an alternative, could I hook up an external Firewire drive with OS X installed and designate that as the startup disk?
Whether I install a second internal drive or hook up an external FW drive, my ultimate goal is to get away from the original 20GB drive as the startup disk.
Any advice/info will be appreciated. Thanks.

The first thing that you have to bear in mind is that model of G4 will only support drives up to 128GB on the internal bus. You can install a larger drive, but only the first 128GB will be used. There are drives of 120GB and smaller still available on the market.
If you decide to go with the internal, the existing ribbon cable has the necessary connector for adding the second drive - it would go on the connector in the middle of the cable, and the added drive should be jumpered as Slave. Any retail box drives (as opposed to 'bare drives') will have the mounting screws in the kit.
Going to an external FireWire drive is fine - I'd suggest checking out the options at OWC as most of their external drives are guaranteed to be bootable. The advantage would be that you're not limited to drives under 128GB.
Either way, you can clone the existing boot drive onto the new one using Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Second iTunes installation on same computer

My wife and I share a computer. She has had trouble with her iTunes account so I want to creat a new one for my use, leaving hers alone. Do I just download iTunes and install it or will that create problems since there is already an iTunes installation on this computer?
    Thanks.

From my experience of trying to resolve the problems with iTunes simply downloading another version and trying to use another ITunes-enabled device just compounds the problem....libraries just get screwed up.
There may be something on the Apple 'Help' site that you can refer to but IMO don't even try!
Sorry to be so negative....but that's my experience.
