Second internal for data storage?

I have a new internal 320 GB (SATA drive running on Sonnet card), and the old internal ATA 120 GB.
I plan to have the System & all apps on the 320. I could put data on either.
Would there be an advantage to putting data on the other drive? Could it speed work flow?
Thanks,
James

+"Would it be faster to have the app & doc on different drives?"+
It may or may not be faster but it would absolutely be safer. Keeping your documents on a separate drive protects them from pretty much everything except a failure of the drive itself. To protect against that, a third drive as a redundant backup is a good idea. I run four drives in my MP. The system, a system backup, a data drive and a backup for that. Then both are backed up redundantly to two external eSATA drives.

  • Use an external HD with Airport Extreme to access it for data storage from computers  connected to the WiFi network?

Can I connect My Passport HD into my Airport Extreme's USB port to access it from my computers (27" iMac 2012 now using Yosemite) on that Wifi network for data storage and retrieval purposes?

Yes, if the AirPort base station's hardware supports 802.11n. The drive needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), FAT16, or FAT32, and may need to be connected through an USB hub with its own power supply.

  • How to use a 2nd partition for data storage?

The 40 GB hard disk on my satellite L10 was delivered with two 20 GB partitions (drive C and D). I now understand (by reading this forum) that it is preferred to use one partition for data storage.
Until now there was no need to use the D-drive. But by now I need the extra space.
How can I use the folders structure in windows XP home (My Documents etc) and put the data on the D-drive.
We work on this computer with several accounts.
I tried to move one folder out of My Documents to the D-drive, but then it can be reached by the other users. Should I use shortcuts towards the D-drive? I hope there is a simple solution.
    Thanks in advance.
(I tried my best to write this in English....)

    Hi
I didnt tried it before but you can try to make your personal folder on D partition. The notebook administrator should set the security settings that can be found under folder properties. Go to Security tab and check all permissions for other users. Choose Deny option for all of them.
I believe that on this way you can use your data folder alone and be sure that other users can not read or execute any of your private data.
Please let me know if it works properly.

  • TS4009 Refund for data storage purchase for iPhone

What is the email address or phone number to get a refund for iCloud data storage?  Apple says simply to "contact Apple" without more specificity.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57#U
Follow the link. If you are in the US just scroll down to US & there's a link to email and the contact phone numbers.  You can also use express lane.
I received a full refund of my ICloud storage purchase 43 days after purchase! The CSR were phenomenal and just friendly & professional - great experience! I might have lucked-out getting the reps (Shelley & Joshua).
    I called:  1-800-MYIPHONE
The wait was maybe 2 minutes max!

  • How should I partition a new hard drive - for data storage

My original drive was failing, so I installed another one, with the operating system on it, so that when that one failed, it was not a problem.  Now I have a 2nd one that's failing (or has possibly failed, though I do have it backed up using Time Machine .  I bought another drive today - a 2 TB one and want to install it, possibly partitioning it - maybe with a partition that holds the operating system and some of the software, (though don't know if that's a good idea or not), and part for the data backup of videos I've made, and slideshows from Aperture, etc. - just "stuff".  What is the best way for me to partition it?

Unless you have very specific requirements, such as wanting to install more than one OS, there's no advantage to creating multiple partitions.

  • Use BD disk for data storage?

A blue ray disk can hold 25gb  of data as opposed to a DVD 4.7gb.
Is there any way I can store standard original footage AVI from an old DV camera via firewire on a BD disk and use it later on for
archive or editing some time in the future?
That way I could store a whole DV tape on a BD disk.

Yes. Use a program, like the great, free ImgBurn to do BD-Data discs. Just Copy your files/folders to the blank disc.
You might want to see this ARTICLE, however. Just something, possibly potential, to think about.
    Good luck,

  • Using a flash drive for data storage - questions

I take video clips whenever I travel and when creating DVD videos, want to intermix the clips with still images. Over a long trip, so many videl clips are created that it is required to download these to free up space in the camcorder. For me, a flash drive (or pen drive) is an ideal medium. However, I have found that even with a "fast" drive having a spec of 20MB/sec read and 18MB/sec write, the data transfer slows significantly when the transfer is of either video (.AVI) or music (.mp3).
For example, I have a Sony flash drive with the above specs. Transferring straight data files such as word or spreadsheet documents, I measure the speed at approximately 12MB/sec. But, when I transfer video or audio, this drops to about 4MB/sec.
When I look up transfer rates on the net, it gives one figure specifying this as "data transfer". I could find nothing to indicate the change, if any, in this rate if video or audio files are transferred.
Does anyone have experience with this? Basically, I am trying to find the fastest 2 GB minimum flash drive at a reasonable price, but will I lose all of the speed as a function of the type of file.
    Thanks

Yes, if these are normal data files and the flash drive is formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32.

  • Threshold for data storage.

Is there any limit on size/volume of data (no of rows etc) that can be stored in an oracle table?
I am great fan of oracle and I am sure it will easily support anything upto a billion recs without having serious performance issues.
But just want to poll and hear from fellow experts on whats the max table size that they have come across and were there any issues.
    Thanks !

Table can have unlimited number of rows. You only have to look for contraints like number of datafiles you can handle per tablespace and this again is based on max size of datafile in OS.
Bottomline is oracle is designed to handle large number of rows with least performance problems.

  • 1000v and possible issue for data storage firmware upgradation

    Hi all,
We have IBM N series storage controller which provide storage to esxi4.1.We have hosted out primary and secondary VSM for 1000V deployment on this ESXi4.1.
We need to upgrade the storage firmware and I like to know if their is any possible impact on my 1000V.
As this is a outage change [becuse of storage will bring dowm] i like to know why precautionary measure will be taken so that my nexus 1000v remain un affectted because of this storage controller upgradation change.
If their is any link available for refference .
    Thanks in advance.

Since your storage is going down completely you will need to power off the n1k. Here are things You can do to minimize the impact of this:
    1) ensure your running config matches your startup config (show run, show start)
    2) ensure your system VLANS are configured correctly. Namely make the follow VLANS are system VLANS on your eths/veths that carry them: ESXi management, vCenter management, VSM management, control, packet, any storage VLAN (iSCSI or NFS)
    3) make sure the VSMs have their reservations set correctly in ESX so they don't have to worry about resources during boot
Alternatively if you have a host with ESX installed on local storage you could migrate the VSMS over to that, storage vMotion the VSMS onto local storage and keep it running during the outage (though you should still verify your system VLANS)

  • Best Practices for data storage in portal database

    Hi,
I need to store some stuctured data which is related to portal only. This data may grow data by data and may huge amount some point of time.
Iam thinking which is the best way to handle it like maintanance point of view.
i think i can store it in R/3 as custom table which is easy to maintain and read/write using RFC.
the other one is store it on the portal database (dictionary), may not be easy to handle it.
    suggestions please?
    Thanks.

Best way is to maintian data(growing data) on R3 and use  JCA to write a simple portal application(JSPDynpage or WD) to get the data back on portal.
Using JCA, won't affect noticeable portal performance..
Itz not advisable to store large data on dictionary.

I would recommend not settling for less then USB 3 or hold out for Thunderbolt, if your machine is capable. Firewire 800 minimum.

  • Using TC for back up and data storage...partition?

I'm not sure I know enough to word this question properly so my apologies in advance.
I picked up a time capsule today and I want to make sure I set it up the right way. Besides using it for back-ups, I'd like to use it for data storage of things that no longer fit on my laptop. (Now a MacBook Air with a smaller drive than I'm used to.)
I'd like to put my iPhoto library, iTunes and various other things that I don't have to have with me all the time on it.
Should I partition the drive? Can I partition the drive? For data and backup sections?
I also have a question re: two people backing up to one TC. If one is backing up all the time and one is in town only occasionally, how is space distributed if partitioning isn't possible? If the TC capsule backes up till it's full and then drops off the oldest backup, what does it do when it;s full and the occasionally backed up machine is put into the network?
Many thanks for any help. I'm looking forward to setting this up and would like to avoid doing it wrong!

The drive cannot be partitioned. You can create folders as you wish to suit your need for things other than backups.
As noted earlier, when the occasionally connected machine is connected for backup, it will delete the oldest backup for that machine to make room when needed.

  • Proper "Formatting" of second internal drive with Disc Utility??

Using a second internal HD for data storage, was formated 4 months ago with default settings from Disc Utility. When I called the drive manufacturer today about corrupted Photoshop files (10 in 4 months) occuring on this drive, they recommended that I backup, Erase and Format as MAC OS Extended "NOT" Journaled.
Before I start - any comments, recommendations??
Would "Journaled" or "Not Journaled" actually cause corruption in 150mb Photoshop files??

I'd run Disk Utility and have a look at the disks; I'd look to verify the volume structures.
Journaled HFS+ is the default for installations, too.
Formatting usually doesn't help with disk hardware that is going wonky. Bad blocks are bad blocks, and failing disks tend to have increasing numbers of bad blocks. Reformatting a failing disk "papers over" the bad blocks, at least until the next crop of bad blocks arises and corrupts something else.
Formatting does help if there's a corruption in the volume structure.
Would also look to off-load everything and either replace the disk with a new one (wonky disks aren't worth bothering with), and/or run a write-comparison test and pound on the drive some.
Journaling can be shut off on the fly; see the diskutil man page for details on the disableJournal knob.
I'd also try to determine if this is something specific to Photoshop, or if this is a more generic problem. Look also for patches for Photoshop, and do look to update whatever version of Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server is in use here.
There's no obvious mention of HFS+ and Journaling and Photoshop over at Adobe, either.

  • Correct Sata Drive for External Storage on DVR

Approximately eight months ago my DVR received a software upgrade that included the ability to add external storage. Not wanting to settle for just 1 TB of storage using one of the Verizon approved external drives, I chose, instead, to buy a WD20EARS 2TB Green SATA drive that the salesperson at CompUSA said would work with my STB. I made it into an ESATA drive by installing it in an enclosure. The STB saw the drive, formatted it and then added it as external storage.
Unfortunately, it never performed correctly. It was constantly plagued with long pauses in the audio followed by video pixilation - very often to the point of not being able to watch either a live or recorded program. I talked to FIOS support several times and was offered a new STB/DVR each time. I kept thinking that it was a software problem and put up with it until a few weeks ago. . One night it got so bad that I ejected the external drive and went back to using the smaller internal drive. Surprise! NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER!. It was then that I decided that the problem had to be the external drive.
After some Internet research and a call to Western Digital, I determined that WD20EARS that I had purchased was the wrong type of hard drive and it would never have worked properly. It was NOT designed for streaming video but for data storage. The correct Western Digital drive can be found in the WD AV-GP family (AV=Audio Visual), specifically designed to work with PVR/DVR's, STB's, and video surveillance systems. The drives essentially have no error correction built in and thus have no problem with minor streaming glitches coming from the STB as it buffers the transmission to the drive. Since they have no error correction, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they be used for DATA CRITICLE applications. I ended up going with a WD20EURS drive (2TB) that I installed in the enclosure. It's been up for over 24 hours and is performing flawlessly. Sure wish I had investigated sooner

  • The amount of memory used for data is a lot larger than the saved file size why is this and can I get the memory usage down without splitting up the file?

I end up having to take a lot of high sample rate data for relativily long periods of time. When I save the data it is usually over 100 MB. When I load the data for post-processing though the amount of memory used is excessively higher than the file size. This causes my computer to crash because 1.5 GB is not enough. Is there a way to stop this from happening withoput splitting up the file into smaller files.

LabVIEW can efficiently handle large files, far beyond 100Mb, provided that care is taken in the coding of the loading/processing routines. Here are several suggestions:
    1) Check out the resources National Instruments has put together (NI Developer Zone > Development Library > Measurement and Automation Software > LabVIEW > Development System > Optimizing Applications > Managing Memory), specifically the article entitled "Managing Large Data Sets in LabVIEW".
    2) Load and process the data in chunks if possible.
    3) Avoid sending the data to front panel indicators, using local/global variables for data storage, or changing data types unless absolutely necessary.
    4) If using LabVIEW 7.1, use the "show buffer" tool to determine when LabVIEW is creating extra
    copies of data in memory.
