Second Life and the Macbook Pro

I got my macbook pro in September and I am now trying to run second life. While it does run, the frame rate is awful. Its not as if the graphics (even when turned up to the highest setting) should be taxing the graphics card.
Anyone else having problems with this.
thanks in advance
David

Hi there,
I'm running SL in a nearly full screen window on my MacBook Pro 17 and I find the fans ramp up almost immediately after I log in. SL runs pretty slow for me compared to my MacPro tower unit. I believe the graphics IS getting taxed considerably when in-world.
Do your frame rates improve when you reduce the size of the viewer window? If so.. I suspect video running outta steam..
In addition, I too have experienced the hard shutdown issue described by Crystal above when using my MacPro tower, even with 512MB video card. It happened literally dozens of times before I figured out that the graphics card was covered with dust and overheating while zooming a fast car around the Mooz racetrack, for example. Blew that bad boy off and no more screwy vid issues and best of all.. no hard lockups since.
This notebook has 256MB of video ram.. I really notice the difference between the two computers.
As an aside.. I have run SL on a Dual 1.25Ghz G4 thats got a 128MB video card in it. SL is miserable on that machine. It's much better if I run SL in a squinchy little window, but even then its a newbie bumping into stuff and extended times waiting for grey things to rezz..
Don't get me started about the spinning beachball......
If you use the windlight viewer these afore mentioned problems are amplified in my opinion. I think ya gotta have cubic video ram to be a happy camper on SL, no pun intended.
Hope this sheds some light..
Cheers, Malcolm
PS: Looking for an SL 'Think Different' T-shirt.. I can be found at Mooz often..

  • Motion, Maya, StudioMax,Combustion,Crysis,Second Life, on the Macbook Pro?

I could not find info about Maya anywhere. So I am wondering if the new Macbook's can handle these big Programs? Second life is a huge problem, friends
complain all the time about freeze ups. I always work with desktops. But now I am more mobile than ever. I have seen friends with some of these working on a Macbookpro in windows not leopard, and also the new Dell xps m1530. I dislike Dell's support and lack of quality but at $1800 compared to $2400 for the Macbook pro? It begs a comparison for me, especially if the software support on the Macbook pro is not there. And if the 8600 gt.graphics really hold up.Big name gaming rigs are an option but that is why I have a desktop. Any feedback on the performance of the MacbookPro especially with Maya,StudioMax, is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Don't know how much you'll learn here. Most of the software you've mentioned comes from Autodesk, which isn't very clear on Leopard support. Maybe Autodesk's discussions forum would be more informative: http://discussion.autodesk.com/index.jspa
Still, stick around-there must be something on it...
PS: Second life system requirements are poor compared to an MBP. It should work well
http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php .Always keep in mind OS X becomes better with time. It's still 10.5.1

  • Final Cut Express HD and the Macbook Pro

I just purchased a Macbook Pro along with final cut express HD. After purchase I read that FCE HD won't work with the macbook pro. I was hoping to see if anyone knew if they were coming out with an upgrade to the universal version like they are with Final Cut Pro.
Intel based macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

That will not work. Ian's solution is for dual core G5s and PCIe based iMacs. It does not address Intel based machines like the 2006 iMac and the MacBook Pro. These machines will have to wait till the end of March for the release of new Universal Binary software to run on them. It's possible FCE3 will never run and will need to be upgraded to another version. If you recently purchased FCE HD to run it on this new computer, I'd suggest, if you can, to return it until the position on the new software becomes clear.

  • Pros and cons of the macbook air and the macbook pro

    Hi!
This coming year, my younger daugter will go to high school and need a macbook because she is dyslectic. I want to know which one between the macbook air and the macbook pro will be the best for her. Thanks for your answer.

At least according to their web site, Whitesmoke Executive is not compatible with the Mac operating system.
Word Q does have a Mac version. http://www.goqsoftware.com/products/
I was unable to figure out what software package you meant by Antidote. There are several.
Word, of course, is part of MS Office, and they make a Mac OS version. I use Office 2011 daily.
None of these products are likely to tax the hardware of either of the computers you mention at all. The computer will be spending most of its time waiting for your daughter to do something.
Note - my neice just bought a MacBook Air 11". She is entering the University of South Carolina in the fall and is absolutely thrilled with the computer.

  • Question re: 1920x1200 RGB LED Display and the Macbook Pros LED display.

My question to the Apple guys here is. What type of LED technology is used in the MacBook Pro's LED display?
I just did a side by side with my buddies new 15" MBP and my new DELL Studio 1737 which has a 1920x1200 which has RGB LED display. I had it second day air FEdEx shipped because I was dying to see this new tech.
And did it blow us away, supposedly since its this new RGB LED it displays something around 98% or 110% of the NTSC color gamut very accurate for graphics and photo work.
My buddy almost dropped when we saw the color accuracy and differences with the MBP. And why hasn't Apple adopted this superior technology?

What do you mean they don't have LED its right on the main page.
Read it carefully, it says "Ultrathin 15-inch LED-backlit display." The "LED-backlit display" part means that the backlighting is LED (as opposed to fluorescent), not the display panel itself (which is LCD).
...Dell has the RGB LED backlighting....
The Dell display you referred to is an RGB LED display, it doesn't have (or need) backlighting. It uses red, green and blue light emitting diodes to produce images, as opposed to a liquid crystal display, which uses color filtered backlighting to produce images.
its confusing why Apple has not adopted this new tech to its high end $3,000 MBP 17 models.
Yet. The 17" MBPs are reportedly due for a significant hardware revision next month. In any case, RGB LED displays have their own performance issues when compared to LCD displays, so don't get too excited, and they may not be thin enough to fit Apple's ultrathin design philosophy.
I have no idea what RGB LED was it just seemed better, and boy did it pay off.
I'm sure you'll have loads of fun with Windows Vista.

  • Macbook and the Macbook Pro Adapter

Recently my Macbook power supply failed. So i sent it off to Apple for a replacement. While waiting for the replacement to arrive I have been using a Macbook Pro power supply, which im sure some of you are aware is a higher voltage. Now my Macbook is randomly turning off. Ive been advised to backup and wipe the machine and do a long overdue reinstall.
My 1 year warranty runs out in three weeks so i have to be quick if I want to send it back for repair. Could the Macbook Pro Adapter cause these issues ? Im expecting the replacement Macbook power adapter back in the next couple of days should i try it with this or send it straight to Apple ?

No, the MacBook Pro adapter is perfectly safe on a MacBook.
If you look at the box on the larger power adapter in the Apple Store, it even says it's fine for MacBook and MacBook Pro. The small power adapter box says MacBook only.
The difference between the adapters isn't voltage, it's maximum current capability.

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)

  • Express34 card and the MacBook Pro 17'

    Greetings,
Recently I acquired a MBP 17", SeriTek E Bundle including a dualbay hot-swap enclosure for 2 SATA 7200 rpm 250gig Hitachi HDrives w/8meg buffer [not much HD heat] and the SATA-2SM2-E Express card/34.
Just completed a FCS5.1.1 DV25 project, from digitizing to record tape out, the system functioned flawlessly.
I'll be cutting a in-house HDV project next. Digitizing HDV footage to the two external SATA drives has gone as expected, no problems...

Where did you get your SATA drives from (if you don't mind me asking)?
And I'm assuming you're using the Firmtek Expresscard adapter?
Glad to hear it worked so well. I'm going to need 2TB of storage on an upcoming project and was considering going that route. Just a little intimidated as I know little about SATAs, especially running of the Express Card.

  • Is there a difference between the macbook air and the macbook pro?

i know the specs but are there some differences where you can tell me about??

The differences are pretty obvious if you've read the technical specifications comparison. Which MacBook Pro are you comparing the MacBook Air against? There are additional differences if you're comparing between 13, 15 or 17" models.
    The most obvious differences:
    Optical Drive
    Ethernet port
    FireWire port
    i5/i7 CPU architecture
    Dedicated GPU (15 & 17 MBP)
    RAM and HDD upgradeability
    Backlit keyboard

  • Standard 3.5mm Cables and The MacBook Pro

My MBP is just over a year old now.
I have a standard 3.5mm Male to Male cable that I intended to
connect the mbp to my TV (which has a 3.5mm imput jack).
For some strange reason, the 3.5mm Cable will not fit into the
MBP's headphone jack(fits part way but only gives one side of sound).
I was under the impression that the headphone
jack was a standard 3.5mm jack.
If not, what size do I really need.
Really appreciate any help you can provide on this.

I am finding the tablet to be inconsistent with my new macbook pro. When the computer goes to sleep, some of the time I come back and find the bluetooth connection between the computer and the tablet as been broken. Sometimes it's just a matter of reconnecting the devices, but other times, even after running through the new connection helper, the tablet still isn't communicating with the computer and in the end I have to reboot. I have installed the latest drivers from Wacom. Any one else experiencing these issues...

  • KBCovers and the MacBook Pro Screen

Hello All, I just got the Final Cut Keyboard Cover from KB covers its made of rubber and I was wondering if it was okay to leave it on my MBP with the lid closed... will it leave some sort of impression on the screen, or an outline of it, or stick to the screen? Does anyone have any advice or have had experience with this? Thanks in advance! Josh Lindsey

I use my old iBooks silicon iSkin cover but like I did for 3 years with the iBook, I also use the fine foam sheet the Mac came with between the screen and keyboard cover. I'm fussy with my Macs

  • How can I select which channel the wireless card on the Macbook Pro uses?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro which must be 5-6 years old running OS ver10.5.8 with the following wireless card details..
Wireless Card Type:          AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x86)
      Wireless Card Locale:          Worldwide
      Wireless Card Firmware Version:          1.4.16.2
      Current Wireless Network:          ML MC
      Wireless Channel:          6
.. and a Time Capsule running firmware ver 7.6.1.
We recently installed a faster broadband connection and for some reason the pc’s (recent purchases) we have are regularly getting a 37Gb max download speed and the MacBook Pro is regularly getting only 19Gb max download speed.  All the computers are connecting through the same Time Capsule to the net.  On the Time Capsule the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidths are set so the channel is selected automatically.
Is the max download speed on the MacBook pro slower because of the wireless card in it?  And if so, how can I check?  Could I manually adjust it to a faster setting?
    Thanks,
    Simon

Channels are managed by the router and the automatic settings on your TC is about right - unless you have general WiFi issues.
Your slower speed is down to the older Airport card in your MBP.

  • When I plug in my USB Thumb drive (PNY 8Gb) the MacBook Pro does not see it, nothing happens.  Is there something else I need to do?

When I plug a PNY 8Gb USB thumb drive, nothing happens and the MacBook Pro can't see it. Is there something I need to do?

If you are looking for it in Desktop, it's normal that you feel like your Mac doesn't detect it. By default, OS X doesn't show external drives in Desktop, so you have to access to them from Finder. To do it, open a Finder window and choose your external drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
If you want to show the external disk in Desktop, open a Finder window, go to the Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and mark "External drives"
