Second Life messing up my MacBook Pro

Hi,
I am not sure if I am dealing with a hardware or software issue here but I love Second Life and really want to be able to run it on my MacBook Pro.
I initially had no problems at all but in the last month, I have had numerous major crashes where the entire computer locks up. I have the Radeon X1600 Video card and 1.5. Gigs of RAM but despite this, I still seem to have to have all the video preferences turned down to almost nothing to run it.
And even then, I just keep crashing. Sometimes, while running SL on my external 19" monitor, the MacBook Pro screen will suddenly turn into a flashing strobe light or the background Mac image will become all jagged. Just last night, the external monitor on which I have the actual desktop (i.e. Dock, icons etc) looked like it was melting (all the icons were blurry and all the text on the screen was blurred. A restart reset it and it seemed okay until 10 minutes into SL again when both screens suddenly went black and I couldn't get them to come back on again so another hard restart.
I have read other people being able to run SL fine on the same model as mine.
I have tried clearing the cache, I have it set to just 200 in SL preferences.
I am running the latest SL version too.
Other weird things...while running SL in a window on my Mac desktop (on external monitor) :
1) the MacBook Pro screen is suddenly completely covered in equal green and black vertical lines or just white and black vertical lines.
2) Strobe light effect - strong, regular bright flashing on the MacBook Pro screen
3) Normally smooth background lines on MacBook Pro screen are jagged and pulsating like crazy.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I love SL and just pray that I can run it again on my MacBook Pro !!
Jessica

Jessica,
I have the same problem with Second Life completely locking up my whole computer and forcing me to do a hard restart. I am not a tech guy, but I have been doing my best to get answers. There is a small thread here (http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1978?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system .issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#action_32598) which discusses the issue. According to these posts, it has something to do with a driver for the new graphics cards being defective in some way.
What I find so frustrating is finding answers from people who actually have authority to speak (an official Apple rep or Linden Lab rep or both) saying "We are aware and will have an update soon." If such an acknowledgment is out there, please please post it here!
Is Apple just rushing new models out so fast they aren't developing them properly? I don't know how all this works, but if MacBook Pro's crash when people play games like World of Warcraft and Second Life, I think Apple has a problem.
Thanks in advance for any and all updates and information.

  • Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011?

Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011? I have 2 500 gb. SSD drives in my 2011 MacBook Pro. My plan was to install windows 7 on the 2nd drive. I'm new at owning Macs so I have had Windows on main drive using bootcamp but I wanted to speed up my 17" Mac so I maxed out the memory and added the SSD drives.  Thinking I could put the 2 operating systems on seperate drives I bought to 2 SSD's. Is there any way to do this.  So far I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?

Yes. Just install Windows onto it without using the Boot Camp Assistant to partition it.

Does OS X Mavericks shorten a battery life time in Retina Macbook Pro?

Thank you again for your advice, and I am sure your right but as a simplton I have to argue that the problem is asociated with Mavericks in so much as - one does not have any of these issues running any previous OS and therefore, the issue is a Mavericks one when upgrading.  It is all to easy for the techies to say "its on your mac' if proper testing and development had been done on,  at the very least , the apple software the upgrade should not have issues.  its a bit late after installing and having Apple update remind you all the time to upgrade then to say sorry - your fault for having incompatible software like mail .  However, I suggest you look at the other apple logs / site that complain of battery drain after mavericks they all point to issues that are as a RESULT of the upgrade and yes technically you will argue that is because the original software in not compatible or some such.  Lets not go on and on I have sorted the problem - don't use Mail and battery life is OK, Use mail and watch it drain.  Once again thank you please don't feel the need to respond.

  • Seriously messed up my macbook pro... I think.

    Hello!
I purchased a toshiba hybrid HD/SSD (MQ01ABD100H) and 8gb of ram from macsales.com. I purchased this to upgrade my macbook pro from 4gb of memory and 500gb hdd to a hybrid 1tb hd/ssd and 8gb of ram. I received these items in the mail today, and went on their website to install everything correctly. After successfully installing everything into the computer, I turned it on. At first, I was getting the folder with a question mark in it, so I just loaded mavericks off of my flash drive. When I went to boot it off that, it comes up with an error saying there was an error, please wait a few seconds or press a key to continue startup; this is a new error to me so I just continued the startup. A few seconds later, next to the Apple a bunch of black text with some errors and the computer name came up. It then restarted the computer before I could take a picture and white screened . I turned it off and removed the new hard drive and put it in a passport to install the mavericks manually from my iMac. I did that sucessfully, and when I put it in my computer it was doing the same thing. So then I launched it from the recovery drive. I went to install a fresh install, but after about 2 minutes in, it restarts itself and goes back to the selection of time machine back up, fresh install, or disk utility. It's in a never ending loop of this. I then to troubleshoot put in my old drive hoping I could just use that. As soon as I put it in and closed it up and turned it on, it was doing the error and black text with whitescreen. I proceeded to call apple a few minutes ago, hoping they could give me some advice. I then learned by telling them I did it myself, I voided my hardware warranty (how happy I am about this). They gave me some repair places I could go to, but it's not very likely they will take me due to me voiding my warranty. Is there anyone that has had this problem? Or can give me help/advice or anything? I'm going on vacation friday to Hawaii and I need the Macbook for business... This has been a disaster. I have a feeling it's the actual macbook pro, since when I switch the hard drives it's messing up still. If anyone can help me, I appreciate all suggestions or solutions!!!
    Thank you!

I can boot it off of the external enclosure; here is what happened.
When I turned it on, after going into the select a boot and selecting the external drive, it went into the white screen with a bunch of black text(i assume errors.)After this error, it automatically restarted itself. I let it run it's course and figured it would whitescreen again, however it did not. It successfully went to my log in screen, but there are major graphic errors with the mouse and the display (shown below.) After successfully logging in, it took about 4-5 minutes to load the desktop successfully (usually takes about 12-20 seconds). Does this help at all?
    I really appreciate your help!

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.

  • Best way to format a second hard drive in a MacBook Pro?

I put a SSD in my MacBook Pro and I am wondering what is the best way to format the hard drive that i am putting in the place of the optical drive. I could set it put in raid configuration but I'm pretty sure that it takes the speed from the slower drive. Making my upgrade pointless. Should I put the hard drive in and format it to Mac OS extended (journaled). Is this my best option. Will i only be able to put applications on the second hard drive or will i only be able to put on files such as media, word docs ect.?

    Hello,
I read some of your responces to other computer issues. Do you have any thoughts that may help my situation. I posted this earlier. I try to use my OS X HD to reinstall but I only get so far and I am told install can't go any further.
    Detailed Discription;
    Everything is running-phizz-black screen
Start button-enter password-gray bar at bottom of screen-
Gray bar fills 1/4 - computer shuts off
So I looked around on wifes computer and find a few sequences to try and fix.
    didn't work.
So I am here now after accessing reinstall  from my os x disc and a couple other discs to choose from.
    Nothing is working-need help
    Past history;
from the begining my mac never carried a charge. Then it stopped charging completely.
I just lived with it-but now this-christ man it ticks me off.
Anyways I would appreciate all the hel I could get, thanks
    Thank You

  • Installing LR5 on second computer that is a Macbook Pro; 1st computer is desktop PC

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro to use for my photography work because of its exceptional display.  The Macbook Pro will be my second computer for working with Lightroom 5.6 and Photoshop CS5.  My first computer is a desktop PC operating Windows 7.  Is it possible to extend my license to two computers with different operating systems?
    Many thanks,

Dave thanks for the response and info to my question concerning Lightroom
and two different operating systems.  I was almost sure that there would be
complicating issues concerning a multiple operating system installation.
Doesn't sound to complicated though.  I'll give it a try as soon as I
purchase an external DVD drive for the Macbook.  I tried to contact Adobe
concerning this question, but their response system is so convoluted that
it would probably be easier to mount an expedition to Mars than have
someone from that company respond to a simple question.
    Thanks again,

  • Battery Life really terrible on MacBook Pro...

I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch and it has only 101 cycles on battery, yet it only lasts for about 2 1/2 hours max when fully charged.  The computer is 1 1/2 years old and I just use it for personal use...which really isn't that much.  Any thoughts? Thanks

My Macbook Pro is 4 years old and I still get approximately 5 hrs of battery life under normal usage with no more than 2 applications open at a time.  Playing downloaded games or games played directly from a cd , I get around 4 - 4 1/2 hours.  I faithfully calibrate my battery every other month per my user manual schedule.
I never watch movies while using my battery.

  • Battery Life on my 17" MacBook Pro

    Hey guys,
So I just bought a early 2011 17" MacBook Pro and was wondering what the battery life should be like. I have the brightness on half, keyboard lights on full, and I have been on facebook, apple, and watching a movie, and the battery life is already on 63%. I don't know if this is normal, or is there something wrong with my battery? I called applecare and they said that it just depends on usage, but I'm still kind of worried because the computer was $2458 and I want to make sure that everything it in check for this kinda of money.
    Please answer/reply soon!!!!
    Alexander

So would what I was doing be considered heavy usage? Thanks for answering
Depends.  Screen brightness on half is good, but keyboard lights on isn't.  If you're using the internet, presumably you're doing that wirelessly, and having AirPort turned on drains power faster due to the need to constantly broadcast radio signals.  (Bluetooth is the same.)  Watching a movie isn't a low-power thing to do, and if you were watching it from a DVD in the optical drive, keeping that spinning eats even more power.
What you were doing isn't as high a usage as, say, playing a graphically-intense 3D game, but it's not something that will help your battery last longer either.

  • Second graphics card (Nvidia) for Macbook Pro (late 2011)?

    Hi,
I have a late 2011 17-inch Macbook Pro, and want to know whether it's possible to fit a second graphics card in there - and if so, where I could find a list of compatible cards.
What I am really aiming for is an Nvidia card with CUDA, since there are various applications I want to use that require CUDA.
If it's not possible to fit a second CUDA card in there, is it possible to replace the current card (AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB) with an Nvidia one?
    Thanks,
    S

Thanks for such a quick response, albeit not the one I was hoping to hear!

  • Battery Life on brand new macbook pro 15 inch i5 only lasting 3 hours

The battery on my macbook pro is only lasting 3 hours with light use...If i'm watching a video or on a game it lasts maybe an hour or 2. I charged it fully when I first got it out of the box 2 days ago.
I have tried calibrating it which worked a little bit. But still nothing like the promised 8 hours. Not even near 6 hours.
    Can anybody help?

I tell you how to maximise it mate .. Fully charge your battery and leave it on charge for 2 hours .and then create the minimum power consumption scenario ( kill bluetooth , minimise brightness , kill all apps etc ) AND THEN remove the plug .. use at this state until about 70% charge and continuously monitor the capacity like I mentioned earlier when you see it hit a high, plug it in you will see now that will become your permanent capacity .. allow full charge and leave it plugged for a day . .repeat the same .. after about a week now this time do the same but reduce down to the 40% range and always plug in at a high capacity point..you will train you r battery this way ..
I am glad I could help .. altho it took a bit of fighting the external obstructions it's all good
    take care ,,

  • Help me bring new life to Mid 2009 Macbook Pro

    Hello,
I have a mid 2009 15" Macbook Pro, 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2x 2g 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 320G HD w/ rotational rate of 5400.  I purchased the computer back in 2009 and it's beginning to show it's age.  I have read this entire thread here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4141610?start=30&tstart=0) and heard many claims of read/write speeds after installing an SSD, although none of them include what the speeds were with there original (spinning type) HD.
    My computer needs:
I am currently in my 4th year as an electrical engineering student, so I use the computer for tasks such as Matlab, analyzing and plotting the output of an analog to digital converter (sometimes resulting in 3-4 thousand data points to be plotted at once), and general report typing.  I may one day soon begin running parallel desktops as I often use a program called Multisim that is only available on Windows.  The machine is also my personal computer and contains an itunes library consisting of ~2k songs, many of which have uncompressed bit rates (Im a sq car audio guy).  Im currently using ~250G of my 320G HD.
    The point:
I can't afford a whole new computer right now and also may end up receiving one in the near future from an employer.  With that being said I would like to upgrade some of the components of my existing laptop, as I have plenty of room for expansion.  What I see as my best options are as follows, in order of preference:
    (1) Upgrade to a SSD.  I would like to do this to bring back some of the responsiveness to my machine.  I also favor this option because I'm beginning to reach capacity on my current HD.  In the thread I linked I learned some people favor putting a 128-256G SSD in their optical drive, and leaving the HD untouched.  I would be in favor of just replacing the entire current hard drive with a 512G or larger SSD, to keep the optical drive functional.
    - is the smaller SSD in the optical bay a more cost effective solution?
    - what drives are recommended/ not recommended? In the other thread guys spoke of having trouble with certain brands, but assuming the drive doesnt physically break isnt memory just memory?
    - will I need any other components to transfer my current HD data to the new SSD? (I like the idea of a fresh OS install afterwards)
    - where could I find a walk through on how to install new SSD/transfer HD files/install fresh OS?
    serial-ATA specs:
    NVidia MCP79 AHCI:
      Vendor:          NVidia
      Product:          MCP79 AHCI
      Link Speed:          3 Gigabit
      Negotiated Link Speed:          1.5 Gigabit
      Description:          AHCI Version 1.20 Supported
    (2) Upgrade the memory.  Im hoping this will remove the pinwheel I get when performing calculations/plotting large data sets in Numbers.  I would replace the current two 2G memory sticks with two matching 4G sticks for a total (and I believe max) of 8G memory.  I believe any DDR3 1067MHz sticks would work, but correct me if Im wrong.
    - is any brand recommended or not recommended?
    - Swapping memory is as simple as powering down the machine, popping the old out, popping the new in right?
For either upgrade I would most likely be going with after market brands, as I just dont see Apple parts as cost effective, unless it is recommened I stick with Apple products.
-I realize that both of these options will result in improved performance, but what I ask is is it worth the money (and potential headaches) to upgrade?
-If the performance of my machine were a chain, what do you feel is my weakest link? I feel the SSD will result in a larger overall performance improvement but currently the 4G of memory is my weakest link and the most cost effective of the two options.
-With the parts of my chain that cannot be upgraded, such as the processor, serial-ATA, are any of these upgrades worth it?
Sorry for the long post, but I hope I was complete in describing my current situation.  Please advise me and thank you to anyone kind enough to read this and shed some light.
    Cheers, Matt

    (1) Don't put a SSD in your optical bay if you're going to use it as a boot drive. MacBook Pros assume that the boot drive is going to be in the hard drive bay and you're just asking for trouble if you put the SSD in the optical bay. See my (long overdue for an edit) user tip -> Upgrading your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive. It should answer some of your questions.
    (2) Most of us around here recommend Crucial or OWC RAM. You are correct in saying that your machine can utilize up to 8GB of 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs. Visit the Crucial website and, under the System Scanner tab, download a small zipped app that, when run, will report your model back to Crucial and you'll be offered potential upgrade paths.
Is it worth it? You might run into a SATA cable problem with the SSD when you install it as mid-2009 MBPs are notorious for having faulty SATA cables - but that's of little concern in determining if the upgrade is worth it. The only two parts of your machine that are upgradeable are the drive and RAM and you'll certainly notice a difference in performance. But, in the end, only you can determine how much longer you're going to use your machine and if you'll get a good ROI.
Good luck - I know that I haven't helped you with all your questions, but it's a start...

    Restart if needed.
