Second Monitor Dead After 10.5.7 Update!

I had a small issue with the update when installing it, but finally it worked. Everything seemed fine. I boot up today and after about 10 minutes of work my second screen went dark and it won't come back.
As I am new to Mac. How do you roll back from an update, if at all possible. I want to this before my main display goes dark. Please be specific if possible...THANKS

So, i have now tried everything without result.
Stripping the computer down and swapping disk does nothing, it doesnt boot on external discs and the keyboard has stopped working after boot. Changed the RAM and manually reset by pulling the internal battery. Nothing makes any difference here it still just tries to boot once out of five attempts. I really think this is a bad firmware flash, and the 10.5.7 update does include 'Improves performance of video playback and cursor movements' and other things that sounds like firmware updates.
Is there any way to rescue a bad firmwareflash?

  • 10.5.2 Update - Second monitor "blinks" after wake from sleep

Posting in the off chance that others have seen this behavior. This seems to be Leopard related, and did not start happening until after I installed the 10.5.2 update.
After waking from sleep my second monitor will blink on and off for anywhere from 2 seconds to about 30 seconds at which time it functions properly. It does not do this on initial startup OR when booting from my tiger volume (backed up with superDuper before a clean install of Leopard). Unplugging the display and plugging it back in also stops the "blinking"; turning the monitor off and then on has no effect.
My machine is a early (2007) model 2x2.66 dual-core with 3GB of (Apple) RAM and a GeForce 7300 GT. All firmware updates have been applied and software update reports no updates available.
The displays are both Sceptre X9G-NagaV 19" flat-panels connected via DVI, though I see the same behavior when using my 20" apple cinema display as second head. (I know these are cheap monitors. Please refrain from telling me that the displays are at fault - it 's not a problem with the display, as this doesn't happen under Tiger. The monitors have performed admirably for over two years)

Have you tried unplugging the second monitor, rebooting and letting it run without it for a little while, and then plugging it back in to see if it clears some persistent loading problem? My monitor has always gone out on me kinda randomly, but I think it's my GPU in my PMG5 that's losing power and resetting or something so it wouldnt be the same issue (I've gone through two so far with the same results).
Alternatively, try changing some of the display settings, such as resolution, color, and such to see if the change corrects how it's loading the display.

  • [SOLVED] Pointer on second monitor distorted after XOrg 1.9 upgrade

I updated to XOrg1.9 and my mouse pointer becomes distorted into a garbled rectangle of noise whenever I move to the second monitor. It's fine on the first. Using Catalyst drivers.
I can still use it, but its a giant garbled blob... anyone else experiencing this?
It looks fine on the first monitor.
EDIT: I replace my ATI card with an Nvidia one and used the nvidia-beta drivers. Mouse pointer looks fabulous on second monitor now. Only cost me $400 to fix my goddamn mouse pointer!

  • KT6V 7021 - OnBoard NIC "dead" after BIOS 2.00 update ... any thoughts?

    Hi!
Just flashed KT6V BIOS 2.00 and now my onboard nic suddenly stopped working.
The network adapter gets recognized by Windows as usual, but although I do get a dhcp lease from my server I'm unable to connect to any share on it. It's also impossible to surf the web or to simply ping any local/remote host. If I try to connect to the system from any other workstation on the lan it doesn't work either.
The network status only shows a great amount of sent packages - caused by AVAST! as it tries to look for an update on boot - but only "0" received.
I flashed the BIOS from the emergency diskette and did a CMOS clear (Jumper) afterwards. And yes, I did disconnect my PSU from the wall socket.
Since I need network access to the system I tried stepping back to BIOS 1.90 but with no avail - the onboard nic doesn't receive a single paket after it has got it's dhcp lease.
Any clue what might be wrong and how I'm able to get my nic back to work?
Thank you in advance for any useful help.

    Hi Fredrik.
    Quote
So if you were to downgrade BIOS problems would go away, right?
I have already downgraded to BIOS 1.90 and the problem stayed the same - the onboard nic is still dead beef.
    Quote
When clearing CMOS there can be no el. left in your system, so unplug power cable etc.
As mentioned in my first post I _have_ unplugged the power cord from the wall socket.
    Quote
If the new BIOS would affect NIC card... Hm, it is hard to see quite how.
I can't think of any reason either, however, the nic went dead after updating to BIOS v2.00. I assume that there must be some kind of "network code" inside the bios which has to do with the onboard nic - otherwise I'm unable to explain why the MAC address suddenly changed to "11:22:33:44:55:66". If I would only have a clue on how to access and/or flash the nic ... ???
    Quote
Is there any error marks for the nic in say Device Manager, if you get that far?
Nope, there is no question or exclamation mark on the network card in the device manager. Windows thinks the card is working, but in reality it isn't. As already stated: No traffic from/to the network.

  • Second Monitor Flickers after update

After installing the 10.6.5 update my secondary monitor of my dual monitor setup began to flicker/blink every 3-4 sec.

    What monitor and what connection...?
Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
    1. Shut down the computer.

    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
and then the NVRAM, as per > About NVRAM and PRAM

    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • IPhone DEAD after 2.0.2 update!

I updated and iTunes said the update failed due to an unknown error after backing up the iPhone. The phone, still connected, had the apple logo. I disconnected and still nothing but a logo. After several minutes I performed a reset by holding down power/home buttons. After reboot I got the picture on the phone to connect to iTunes or slide for an emergency call. I connected to iTunes and got a message saying "The iPhone "Todd's iPhone" cannot be used with iTunes because information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone. Check that the SIM card is inserted in your phone and that it is not PIN-locked". Now my iPhone is completely dead with now way to start over. Any help is appreciated!
    Thank you!

    Hey Todd,
Was the iPhone in Airplane Mode when you started the restore?
Can the iPhone still make emergency calls? Try to make a call & disable Airplane Mode.
After Airplane Mode is off, try restoring the iPhone again.
If that does not work, try to reseat the SIM and restore the iPhone.

  • IPhone 4 Dead after i0S 4.3 update went wrong.

So after finally getting round to downloading and installing 4.3 (haven't updated the iOS at all since getting it last July) I find out I can't download more than 80% or so of the update without the connection "timing out". Note, no other problems downloading large files using the same connection.
I then downloaded the iOS from a different source (macworld) and the update seems to run smootly until it gets to the "verifying your update with Apple" point at which I get a  "the update could not be completed error 3194 message"
Getting pretty annoyed at this point and decide to go for a hard reset and restore after saving all my purchases to see if that makes a difference (by holding the home and power keys for 10 secs then letting go of the power key) and the iPhone's screen turns black.
It's completely dead now and I can't use it at all.
If I try to restore the phone I am in the same situation as before as iTunes will only allow me to restore if I download and install the latest iOS. I can't download it via iTunes, and I can't install it if I get it elsewhere.
    Any ideas?

Disabling firewall software during the update is what the regulars on this forum recommend when having problems accessing Apple's servers. And it does sound like you do.

  • Satellite A300 - touch pad dead after BIOS 2.20 update

    Hi,
exact model is Satellite A300 PSAGCA-06M01N running Win XP.
i had a problem with the webcam, and i read in the forum that it may be solved by a BIOS update. so i went ahead and downloaded the latest BIOS from the toshiba website specifically for my laptop model. it went completely well with no errors.
however when the computer restarted after the BIOS update my touchpad doesn't work anymore.
i went to the Device Manager and could still see the Synaptics touchpad device and it says "This device is working properly". but its totally dead and will not respond including the 2 buttons. before i updated the BIOS i had never had any problems with it.
Tried FN+F9 to no avail. plugged in a USB mouse and it works with no problems. In fact, when i plugged in the mouse the synaptics software said " Disabling the touch pad due to external pointing device" so the device driver for the touchpad is working.
if i remove the mouse it will say the touch pad is restored but it is still not working. rebooted many times and still the same problem. went into the BIOS and selected "Default" still a no go.
Can someone offer any advice or ideas please?
I really need the touch pad for the way i use the laptop...

    Hi,
thank you for your reply. i already checked the BIOS setting for "Pointing Devices" and made sure its enabled. its the only setting in there that relates to the touch pad. just to make sure though i disabled it and then rebooted, after which i rebooted again and enabled it to no effect. i know this is not an isolated instance, as my search has turned up some with exactly the same problem. I'm really disappointed with Toshiba.

  • IMac takes 30  seconds to sleep after 10.8.5 update.

Recently, and just after installing OS X 10.8.5, I've noticed that my 2012 27" iMac takes at least 30 seconds to go into sleep mode upon choosing so from the Apple dropdown menu. Prior to installing OS X 10.8.5, my iMac would go to sleep in less than a second. I've looked up this isse on the support communities and have tried many of the suggestions, including checking print cues and resetting the SMC and PRAM, but all to no avail. I haven't installed anythign new on my computer, but my huntch is that there is some type of application lagging which causes the computer to take so long to sleep. Is there a way to go about searching for the culperet program? Or any other suggestions? Also of note, if I restart the iMac, wait for it to reboot, and then quickly put it to sleep, it goes into sleep mode normally, however after about 10 minutes of using the computer, if I try to sleep the iMac it will take upwards of 30 seconds to sleep.
    Thanks,
    Regards--- jgurbisz

I am on a Mac Pro 2.8 (3.1) 2008 model.  12 Gb ram and a radeon 5870.  This supplemental update has been pretty horrible.  I have had the following issues: messed up sleep, random wake ups, and one hard crash.  I have also had the long sleep delay where the fans crank up and it takes forever to sleep...only a restart cures this, which is pretty useless.  The mach file showing but that was fixed with a terminal command.  Lost video chat icon on iMessage for a while but that has now mysteriously returned.  The last annoying bug I have suffered with is what seems like horribly reduced audio quality out of the Apple LED 24 inch cinema display speakers.  It sounds like 22kz mono both input and output.
I would rate this update a full on zero out of ten, for creating problems that never existed in 10.8.5.

  • Zen Micro dead after an attempt to update firmw

My Zen Micro is not even a year old. I started having problems at the start of the new year. It just went to Recovery Mode. At first, none of the 3 options worked. My laptop was unable to detect the device. Today after a driver update on my machine, it found my Zen. The 3 options now worked, but did not fix. I just got more responses from my zen. But it remained in recovery mode. I decided to reload firmware via usb (since the 2 options gave no + result). I got as far as the "gear"?image then it froze. I had no choice but to unplug my zen. Now, it is dead. Doesn't power on. Doesn't charge via USB nor directly from a power outlet.Changed batteries. The same. Can anyone help? Desperate since I just bought a remote, charger and new batteries... expecting it will last.Message Edited by MeiMei on 0-25-200705:46 PM

I tried to send an email to creative but was denied since my product was purchased over a year ago, and it dosnt look like im going to get the help i need here so i give up.
Creative wins, they get my hard earned money in exhange for a defecti've piece of **bleep** i havent been able to get working satisfactoraly since i got it and am now forced to replace...
Before purchasing one of their mp3 players i thought so highly of creative. I usually am more careful before making such a purchase but I, as many others, had trust in this company renowned for its sound cards. Even after the purchase i just told myself "a company like creative wont let this product sit with crappy firmware for long, they'll update it and it will be a great player" So instead of returning it when i should have a sat on it, and my dreams never materialized and now im stuck with a paperweight that wont install any firmware now because of a known issue with their product!
quote from SSR in another thread with the same problem,
"Unfortunately there are others who've got stuck after removing the v2 firmware, and can't apply the same or the v firmware. I suggest you contact support and hopefully they can resolve it for you. Please post back here if you get a remedy."
But i cant contact customer support, they refused to help me because my warrenty is out. If someone knows of a way to fix my problem please feel free to still post in this thread i will still check it in hopes of fixing my player, this forum is now my only hope with creative email support outright refusing to help me.
Thanks to anyway who actually read all these long winded posts but im done with creative...

  • My i phone 4 is dead after i tried to update the operating system to io6 through the phone while it is connected to WI FI, Please advise, i have no Back up

    Hello

  • Powerbook dead after 10.5.7 update.

I have a powerbook that has always worked great. Yesterday i did the 10.5.7 Leopard update from software update, not the standalone update package.
Today it wont boot, it sometimes gives a grey screen with the 'no parking' symbol. But most of the time it just boots without turning on the screen.
    I've tried:
Reset NVRAM/PRAM (seems like the keyboard is not responding to my commands though)
Booting in Verbose, Single user, safe mode.
Force ejecting Leopard CD stuck in computer (tried booting from it without luck)
No commands seem to work, its like the keyboard is unresponsive, so i plugged in an external, still no luck. Holding down the mousekey or touchpad key doesnt eject the CD.
Any ideas? i cant even target disk this machine. And how does a software update manage to screw this up so bad, was there a firmware update in the 10.5.7 update?

So, i have now tried everything without result.
Stripping the computer down and swapping disk does nothing, it doesnt boot on external discs and the keyboard has stopped working after boot. Changed the RAM and manually reset by pulling the internal battery. Nothing makes any difference here it still just tries to boot once out of five attempts. I really think this is a bad firmware flash, and the 10.5.7 update does include 'Improves performance of video playback and cursor movements' and other things that sounds like firmware updates.
Is there any way to rescue a bad firmwareflash?

  • Macbook pro dead after 10.7.5 update

hangs on grey boot screen with spinning wheel.
tried restart with option command p r    same result
    what are my options?

That's a lot to go thru!
For the future, I would recommend buying DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.
Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way. But sometimes a badly damaged system can be deemed unrepairable by the installed version, but if booted and repaired from the DW disk it may still be repairable. This has happened to me.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. DW has repaired every big and little issue I've had on all three of my Macs.

  • C55T-A Touchscreen dead after Windows 8.1 Update

After updating my C55T-A5296 to Win8.1, I've lost all touchscreen functionality.
    Order of operations:
    1. Turn laptop on
    2. Run Service Station, run all updates. This included an update to BIOS v1.20
    3. Run Windows Update - Install all updatres.
    4. Download Windows 8.1 from Windows Store, and install.
    5. Reboot several times during install.
    6. Perform initial setup in 8.1, to include Wireless config, user info, etc.
    7. Run Service Station again - No new updates available.
    8. No touchscreen.
    9. Spend two weeks on the Internet determining that other Toshiba laptops have the same issue, and THEY got a new BIOS update to fix it.
    10. Give up and call support.
    11. Swear to never buy a Toshiba product again.
On the advice of support rep, I've wiped the machine back to Windows 8, and touchscreen funtionality was restored. I then went through the process of re-updating to Win 8.1, and the problem repeats.
In DevManager, I see "unknown usb device (device descriptor request failed)" I am unable to locate any TouchScreen device drivers for my model.
    Anyone have any advice?

  • 3GS dead after iOS 5.1 update

    Hi,
my girlfriend updated her 3GS 16gb to 5.1 the other day and it's now unrestorable.
When the update was attempted we get error code 40 in itunes instantly and now everytime we receive this error 40 when we tru and restore.
    This has never been J4iLbr0k3n.
The phone is the newer bootrom version.
I have used a brand new official cable.
I have tried uninstalling all security items etc and enabling exceptions to the apple ports etc.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all aspects of itunes and anything remotely connected to Apple.
I have tried on a freshly formated laptop.
I have tried with old versions of itunes
I have tried with newest 10.6.
I have tried DFU and all types of hard reset.
I get this Error 40 everytime.
A local apple repair guy said send it him, there's 50% chance he can fix it. If he can its £40, if not it's £10 and he'll return it.
If anyone can offer any assistance into why this has corrupted the phone please help.
If you need any other info please let me know.
    Dan

It seems to be a common prognosis of a hardware failure. Can the Genius bars establish what the actual hardware error would be?
Prior to getting this upgrade and error #40 issue the phone was never jailbroken and had no attempts at being jailbroken.
It was the constant reoccurance of this issue and that nothing was working from any forums that I did attempt it once after everything had been tried. However, it did not stick and it's in the same state as when we first recieved the itunes error 40 straight after the upgrade attempt and it has not booted up since.
I will take it to the genius bar and get the hardware diagnosed for sure.
    Thanks for your help.
