Second router?

I have an existing wired/wireless home network (WRT54G router acting as gateway to a cable modem). I have both wired and wireless PCs/laptops connecting through this. I have a TV and and a Blueray player that need to also be connected to the internet and it's inconvenient to run an ethernet cable to thatr location. I also have a WRT110 router and was wondering if I could connect the TV and Blueray player (both have only ethernet ports) to the WRT100 and configure it to connect to my existing wireless network. If this is possible I'd need details of the setup.

You cannot connect 2 router to each other wirelessly, to connect 2 routers to each other u need to Run an Ethernet cable from your 1st router to the 2nd router. But now u dont want to run the ethernet cable throughout your home, its better u can go for a Access Point along with a Switch and u can configure your access point in a Bridge Mode.

  • How can i use a second router to replace verizon fios router?

Okay so just as the title says how do i use a second router? I got a cisco valet router... I don't know how to use it because the verizon router/modem is wierd i know how to use a router if i only had a modem but fios gives router/modem so how can i use my 2nd router? The current verizon fios router/modem is b/g mode and i wanna change to b/g/n so i can get a better speed from my internet... SO how can i use my 2nd router? I tried this http://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios/3.0_Networking#12506 but i don't get it can someone guide me better or make a video explaination on how to use a 2nd router? I have it connected with see as in pic i connect from my router Internet port to wan port and the ethernet lan port to the ethernet lan port on verizon fios and no work please help...

OK, so with this, we have a few options. You appear to have a MoCa connection to the ONT, hence the coaxial cable being present.
1: The ActionTec can be bridged to the Valet router. This will not require any additional cabling, however it will require a small amount of work to have working. You will also require the ActionTec still in the mix, even though it will not be acting as a router anymore with this configuration.
Visit http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077 and look at Option 4. There is a thread linked that will allow you to set up the ActionTec as just a MoCa bridge, and will pass the Public IP to your router. You will, in order for this to work once the ActionTec is bridged, need to connect the cable from your Valet router's Internet port, to the ActionTec's LAN port and nothing else goes to the ActionTec. From this point, your Valet should run as your primary and everything should connect through your Valet. If you are adding another router, a Netgear N300, you should perform the LAN to LAN setup, which we will talk about once you've got the Valet working correctly. LAN to LAN configs require a custom setup, so do not set up the Netgear for now.
2: This is my preferred method, which would be to run an Ethernet cable to the ONT. Option 6 in the FAQ. This will require spaking to Verizon to have them move your ONT to Ethernet, but once they do this, you can disconnect the Coaxial Cable from your ActionTec router, and plug in your CAT5/CAT6 cable from the ONT to the ActionTec's Internet/WAN port. Use the ActionTec to ensure everything is working after the switchover, and once off the phone, log into the ActionTec, perform a DHCP Release, and then prompty power off the ActionTec. Once this is done, plug the CAT6 cable into your Valet router's Internet port. You should from this point, be able to connect to the Cisco, and if the DHCP Lease was broken successfully, the Cisco should begin serving up your Internet connection. If it does not, leave the Cisco powered off for a few hours to break the DHCP lease, and then power it up. If the Valet does not work, still, give the Valet a factory reset and set up this router again, with the Ethernet cable from the ONT connected to it.
I would just take a good luck at the FAQ linked above again, and see what would work the best. Easiest thing to do is to get the ONT moved to Ethernet, which allows you to eliminate the ActionTec unless you need it in the future for TV service, and also allows you to use any router with ease.
Once the Valet is up and running and holds your Public IP address from Verizon (use http://whatismyip.com/ to determine this) , and also serves up IPs to devices on your network, post back and we can help you set up the Netgear. If you have any issues while setting this up, fall back to the ActionTec. It's factory reset will work without configuration needed, regardless of you being on Coax or Ethernet.

  • Using a second router with airport extreme

I have hooked up a second router to my airport extreme for the purpose of providing more ethernet ports. When I do this I disable the wifi on the second router and place it in a bridge mode to let the airport do DHCP.
However none of the PC's in the house can access the internet when plugged into this second router. My mac can access the internet through this second router, however. If I enable the second router's distributions of DHCP, the PC's can access the internet. I an certain this is wrong, however because if my mac is hooked up to this second router my "back to my mac tab" in System Preferences > Mobile me gives me the Double NAT error.
I have tried two different routers attached to the Airport Extreme with the same results. What do you think?

I don't think it needs to be spinning all the time, others disagree with me, whatever is the correct answer it doesn't matter as there is no way to stop it. Hopefully we will at least have the option at some time in the future to let it spin down.

  • Can I connect a second router to the coax cable.

In my house Verizon fios goes into a box and a coax cable comes out and splits in one direction towards a set top box and in another direction to an Actiontec M1424WR router. An eithernet cable connects the router to a computer. All is well. This works fine.
Now I want to install another computer next to the TV. It sits a long way from the Actiontec, wireless is flakey and i dread the idea of pulling a long cat5 cable through my attic to connect the computer to the Actiontec?
Will it work if I put a splitter on the end of the coax in the room with the tv, run one wire to the stb, and the other to a new router?
    Solved!

Not a second router ... you want to go to your favorite online retailer (like Amazon.com) and purchase an ActionTEC ECB2200 (also called an HME2200) MoCA Ethernet Adapter.    Plug and play and you're all set -- it will automatically link up over the Coax to your ActionTEC router and provide a LAN connection at the second location for you.
You can search the forums for the ECB2200 / HME2200 and you'll find numerous discussions on this device.
I use this in my home network setup and it works great.

  • Adding a Second router to my LAN

I have 4 devices in my network -
    1. Cable surfboard modem
    2. WRT160N Wireless Router - 192.168.1.1
    3. Linksys 10/100 5-port wired switch
    4. WRT160Nv3 - 192.168.1.2
    My current setup is -
    1. Modem to first router. (WAN PORT)
    2. LAN Port from router to UPLINK port on switch
The switch is upstairs, the router is downstairs.  The wifi from the router does not reach upstairs, so I have bought another WRT160Nv3
How do i add this to my setup?  I've tried hooking the new router direct to a PC and configuring it so that it is NOT a DHCP server and changed the IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2 then connecting a LAN port from the switch to a LAN port on the new router and disconnecting the wired pc from the new router.
In the above setup NOTHING after the switch works.  I cannot get internet while the switch is connected to the second router on any computer attatched to the switch.  The wifi will not get internet either (from second router)
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I am not trying to make a repeater using the same SSID, just simply trying to add an access point onto my current setup.

Make sure you have plugged in the switch and that the power switch is in the on position (sorry for the basic instructions, but i've had experiences with people overlooking common sense steps).
One other question...does the switch work correctly with just the primary router and a computer or just the secondary router (with DHCP turned on) and a computer?
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • How to setup a second router?

Does anyone know if there are instructtions somewhere that will tell me how to setup a second router in front of my Actiontec MI424?
I am trying to use a Sonos music system through my computer and it has been recommended to me that I try to use a different router in front of the Actiontec.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Strange thing to recommend, did they say why?
The Sonos system appears to be just an in house music distribution system that besides accessing in house dvices can also access web based music sources.  Are you trying to stream audio via RTSP? as I see another post here regarding what looks like packet fragmentation issues when accessing RTSP thru an Actiontec router.

  • I can't add second router AirPort

    Hi,
I've a problem with adding a second router in a another floor. I've AirPort Extreme A1143 (802.11n 1.generation) connect to the internet in second floor of my house. It's working correctly.
I want to add AirPort Express A1392 in the first floor by ethernet cable. It's connected to the LAN In Extreme (base station), and into the WAN in Express. Express is factory configuration; light flash amber. I can't see express in Utility AirPort (Mac is at second floor, connected (wifi) to extreme.
I'd like to create one wifi network in my house with the same wifi name, password. Is it possible?
    OS X 10.9.4

I'd like to create one wifi network in my house with the same wifi name, password. Is it possible?
    Yes it is.
Have you tested the Ethernet cable connection between the AirPort Extreme and the location of the AirPort Express?
If not, please temporarily connect the Ethernet cable to a laptop or other device and turn off the wireless function of the laptop. See if you can get a good Internet connection on the laptop when you test this way.
If you can, the Ethernet cable is working correctly.
If you cannot, then there is a problem with the Ethernet cable or something else and it will need to be fixed before you can proceed with the installation of the AirPort Express.
    Please clarify on your results.
Also, please clarify if you have an iPhone or iPad for use in the installation of the Express.

  • Adding a second router with WIFI

Whats the best way to add a second router with WIFI for my shop do I need a switch or can I just plug into the back of my exsiting router.

Here is article in the Cisco Knowledge base for turning a router such as the e4200 into a access point.
To do this you would connect a ethernet cable between the two routers.

  • How to Setup a Second Router (WRT310N)

I have two WRT310N routers.  I am setting  up the second one to extend the wireless range.
IMPORTANT: THE SECOND ROUTER IS PLUGGED INTO THE LAN VIA ETHERNET CABLE PLUGGED INTO THE INTERNET JACK ON THE ROUTER.
The IP of the first router is set to 192.168.1.2.  I can connect to it and get to the Internet via wireless.
The second router is 192.168.1.1.  I can see both SSIDs for each router.  However if I connect to the second router I can't get to the Internet since the Internet port is connected to the LAN, not the Cable Modem.
Should I be able to setup the second router to use the first router as the Internet connection?
For Internet Setup I selected Static IP.  IP Address 192.168.1.106 (this is the IP the first router assigned it).
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.1.2 (the IP of the first router)
DNS - I looked up the DNS addresses that my provider is assigning and types those in.
    Network Setup
    IP Address 192.168.1.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server Enabled - but I changed the range to start at 200 instead of 100 so it won't conflict with the other router.
When I try to save I get "The Router IP address equals to the subnet address"
What am I doing wrong?  Is it possible to setup a second access point when the second router is hardwired to the LAN?  Or do I need to install DD-WRT firmware?
I'm rusty on my network stuff.  Thanks in advance for any help.

I think I figured some of this out since your post.  Thanks much.  I found a post on the Internet that said to 1) set SSID on second router to same as the first, 2) disable DHCP on the second router.
Works great. This is with the second router LAN connection plugged into the LAN port, not the Ethernet port.  I've got a device that has to get access to the LAN which is now plugged into the second router instead of the wall jack.  I almost thought I was going to need to add a hub so I could split the wall jack between the wireless router and the media device.  But the question is, how can I tell which router I'm currently using for wireless when the SSIDs are the same.  The area I was having trouble getting connectivity to the first router because of the distance, now I get connectivity, but when I had separate SSIDs the other day I noticed for some reason I was able to connect to the first router anyway.
I suppose I could just unplug the second router and see if I lose a connection.  I'm running Windows 7.  Does the client wireless card just automatically connect to the router with the strongest single when the SSIDs are the same?
I suppose if I am getting a decent connection on my deck now, I shouldn't worry which router I'm connecting to, but I would like to confirm if the $50 I invested was even necessary now.  Guess I should go unplug the second router and see if the connection strength changes or drops.

  • WRT54GS2 as second router to increase wireless range

    All-
I have a primary Linksys router, WRT110 that works great. I am trying to set up a WRT54GS2 as a downstairs wireless to increase range.  I have a CAT5 running from the WRT110 to the WRT54GS2 and is connected from LAN to LAN and have them configured as follows:
    Primary WRT110:
    I.P: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Start I.P: 10 to 50
    DHCP enabled
    Wireless mode : mixed
    Band: Auto 20/40mz
    WPA2 security
    =================
    WRT54GS2is configured as follows:
    I.P: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    DHCP Disabled
    Advanced Routing / NAT:Enabled
    Wireless network = Mixed
    Channel = 6 = 2.437mz
    ============
On both routers I have the same SSID and same security key.
On the Status page of the WRT54GS2 I have the following:
    Login Type: DHCP
I.P and Subnet Mask are blank.
Any ideas where I erred? I've read quite a few posts relating to this and can't seem to find the problem.
    Thanks!

Is the SSID broadcast enabled on both?
Is the device "within 15 feet" connected to the first router or second router? What happens if you switch off the wireless on that computer and then switch it on again?
What happens if you disable the wireless on the first router completely? (Wireless network mode to Off). Can you see the signal of the second router?
You could also use a network sniffer like Netstumbler http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ to scan for networks. It should show you the signals of both access points.
What are your full and exact Wireless and Wireless Security settings on both routers?

This is not expected because NAT to internet should still be done by Router1, no? Computer
behind Router1 with IP 192.168.1.x has internet connection.
[5] It looks like I cannot change the Routing Table Entry on Router2. I do not think I need to change anything,
    just an observation.
[6] If I use LAN to LAN connection, then both intranet and internet works. [The internet IP of Router2 can be
anything not in the same subnet of the Router1, and DHCP on the local side should be disabled to avoid conflict
with the the DHCP on Router1].

I have a question. Unfortunately in order to ask my question, I have to have a lengthy description of my setup. Basically, I have a second Linksys router in "router" operating mode with NAT disabled connected to the Verizon router, and I have a computer which is in a different subnet (192.168.2.x) behind the Linksys router. This computer can communicate with computers behind Verizon router in subnet (192.168.1.x), but cannot reach internet. This is a simplified version of my question, full details are in the original post.
If I setup the Linksys router in "gateway" operating mode, which means with NAT enabled, then both intranet and internet works, but there is no easy way to setup port forwarding for 10 compueters in 192.168.2.x network to communicate with 10 computers in 192.168.1.x network.
If I setup the Linksys router in a LAN to LAN configuration with Verizon routers, but this way all computers are in the same subnet, I want them to be in different subnet for access control and things like that.
I hope this makes things a little clear.
    Thanks.

  • Issues with second router disconnecting and reconnecting

My second wireless router keeps disconnecting... it reboots then becomes availble after a minute.
The second wireless router is a Netgear WNDR3400v2 and is connected to a Actiontec MI424WR via an ethernet wire. I changed the settings as noted in a forum post to hook up a second router... the setting changes fixed the issues with IP address conflicts that I was having. The issue is that the Netgear router keeps disconnecting. The Actiontec router never disconnects.
There are 16 devices connected to the internet.
Parts of my house don't get a signal from the Actiontec router.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on enabling more wireless coverage throughout my house from my Actiontec router and/or how to stop the Netgear router from disconnecting. I can't find any specific information that isn't confusing.
My Actiontec router is on the main floor in a cabinet, which prevents the signal from reaching to parts of the house... there is an ethernet cable that runs from the cabinet to a room upstairs, which is where the Netgear router is located... that signal reaches most of the house.

    Hi Clueless777,
Most likely if your Netgear router is randomly disconnecting but the Actiontec is not, it's going to be an issue with your settings in the router. There is a post over at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/12506 that will tell you exactly how the settings should be in both routers for this to work properly.
As to increasing the signal from the Actiontec router, a couple of things come to mind but you may have already did these things. First, make sure to change the wireless channel in the Actiontec to something like 8. Also, make sure that no cordless phones are located nearby the Actiontec router as much as you can. We mention this because many cordless phones operate in the 2.4ghz range which is the range of most WiFi routers and devices. You could also look into getting a range extender but I wouldn't recommend it because your Netgear router is essentially doing the same function without sacrificing service. Other than these suggestions, take a look at the link above and make sure your settings match. That should help you out more so than changing the channel in the Actiontec router and/or relocating cordless phones.
    We hope that this helps.

  • Second router/modem

I have a BT (2nd gen) router/modem and works okay - though signal outside in the garden not great, probably because its in my office 3 flights up   Was thinking of getting a second router/modem to increase signal downstairs/garden and potentially plugging into my Sky Box so i can get Sky Plus anytime   I am not very IT literate so any advice e.g. would it need to be another BT router to work effectively ?  any advice appreciated   Mike

Thanks again for the advice.   So will having these plugged in also increas WIFI connectivity to near where they are plugged in ?  Mike
No, they do not extend wifi, only Ethernet connections. Some Ethernet leads do come with the TP Link ones, from what I remember.
They work by passing signals down the mains wiring.
What are powerline devices and how do they work?

  • Buying a second router

If I purchase a second router, is the $139.99 a one time charge or a recurring one?

I have had Fios internet for 14 months with no difficulties at all. The router is in basement, my MacBook laptop is on the first floor. Until this weekend, I have always has "5 bars", no disconnects, no error message, fast downloads, etc. Since Sunday, I either get zero bars and Airport cannot find a network or one bar that cuts out and in every few minutes and when working is agonizingly slow. If I walk the laptop to my kitchen, I get 2-3 bars, but it will still go to one and drop off. When I take it downstairs, I get all bars and it works fine. I called Verizon and we did numerous tests, changed some settings. The first person agreed it had to be the modem/router, but because it works within 10 feet (in a clear line) of the modem, they say it is normal and would not help me. After a few calls, a rep offered to send a new r/m and it is in the mail.
If necessary, if the new r/m doesn't fix the problem, I don't have a problem securing another r/m and hooking it up in my office. Can it be done? I am certain the r/m I return to Verizon will not be reused and I doubt it is under any warranty for Verizon. Will Verizon possibly sell me that old modem? Can I use an aftermarket r/m? Please tell me your thoughts and any suggestions you may have.
    Thank you very much

  • VPN on a Time Capsule using a second router.

Ok, I fully realize that the Apple routers do not support VPN.  However, I read here that some guy from Melbourne said that I can buy a second router and place it behind the time capsule and send all VPN traffic through it.
"From what I can see most of these services recommend 3rd party cheap end stuff. Go with that. That means you keep the TC as the main router. Put the vpn router behind it and run all the equipment that needs vpn access to connect to the vpn router."
So, if this is correct, I'm wondering exactly how this is set up.  I use Time Warner's fiber and bought my own modem which does not have a router built in, and hence only has one Ethernet port which is where the time capsule is plugged in.  Im also using Hide My A$$ VPN service.  So, if I buy another router and plug it in behind the time capsule, this tells me that I would plug the new VPN  router into an Ethernet port on the time capsule.  Is this correct?  If so, then wouldn't the VPN router be nullified by the Time capsule?  I mean, when a service pings me, they will hit the time capsule before hitting the new VPN router, and hence see my true location wouldn't they?
I want to use the time capsule as my nat, and hence don't want to bridge it.  Is it possible to do what I want to do?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Hi.. maybe posts I have done.
I fully realize that the Apple routers do not support VPN.
It might be worse than that.. some firmware levels probably break even vpn passthrough.
I want to use the time capsule as my nat, and hence don't want to bridge it.
Yes, but I would like to know why the TC as NAT is important to you... please realise that one particular feature, namely BTTM and ICloud maybe causing vpn to break.
I also do think it is easier to use a vpn router and bridge the TC behind it.
"From what I can see most of these services recommend 3rd party cheap end stuff. Go with that. That means you keep the TC as the main router. Put the vpn router behind it and run all the equipment that needs vpn access to connect to the vpn router."
Yes, there is no need for expensive routers.. many 3rd party firmware will do a good job with fairly cheap hardware. Do take advice from the service you use though.. eg StrongVPN service recommends and has lots of details for setting up dd-wrt routers. It is much easier to use hardware of exact type that is recommended by a service.
    Hide My A$$ VPN service
Sorry but I know  nothing about these guys.
So, if I buy another router and plug it in behind the time capsule, this tells me that I would plug the new VPN  router into an Ethernet port on the time capsule.  Is this correct?
    Yes, correct.
If so, then wouldn't the VPN router be nullified by the Time capsule?
No, the Time Capsule is totally invisible to the vpn tunnel.. which has the endpoint on the VPN router..
Please understand.. if the TC happened to have vpn end point.. it would still have the same IP address as given by your ISP as you have via the router behind it.
It is the VPN service that hides your address. To all the world your IP address is that given by the vpn service.. only the vpn service patches you to the internet and only they connect you. These sevices thus cover your local public IP with their own. You can use vpn service or proxy service or some DNS services to accomplish the same thing.
Port forwarding in the TC is the tricky bit.. and whether the particular firmware is going to break the vpn or not.
From a quick look at the website the vpn routers recommended are the same as for Strongvpn.. all have to be flashed over to dd-wrt.
    http://www.hidemyass.com/vpn/software/routers/
I think if you are putting all traffic down the tunnel as this is suggesting, then it is pointless having the apple TC in NAT mode.. you are not going to be able to use it because every single item in your network will have to connect to the vpn.. assuming you are actually trying to hide all your traffic.

  • ActionTec + second router = port forwarding issue

I'm having an issue with port forwarding (or maybe routing) across a pair of routers with different subnets. I know just enough about networking to be dangerous, but I can't figure this out. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable here can assist me.
Here's how my network is currently setup:
    1) Standard FIOS ActionTec MI424-WR Rev D router, using default 192.168.1.* subnet.
    2) Added a second router (D-Link Wireless-N w/ Gigabit Ethernet) using the 192.168.2.* subnet.
    3) A patch cable connects an ActionTec LAN port to the D-Link WAN port.
    4) Most of my computers connect to the D-Link router for faster network speeds (desktop PC, NAS, etc.)
    5) Both routers are running DHCP and broadcasting different SSIDs. This is so I can have a private network for my personal data (192.168.2.*) and a guest network (192.168.1.*) that friends/family/guests can use. Basically, from the 192.168.2.* network, I can access any network resource on either subnet; the 192.168.1.* network, however, cannot (easily) access the resources on the other subnet.
    6) This setup works perfectly and has met all of my needs so far.
Now, the problem I'm running into:
I purchased a security camera to monitor my home over the internet while away. It is connected to the D-Link router and I can access the camera without issue while on the 192.168.2.* network. Everything works fine locally. However, I cannot access the camera from the internet.  For sake of ease, let's use the following example setup:
    Internet IP = 74.1.2.3
    Router 1 = 192.168.1.1
    Router 2 = 192.168.2.1
    Camera = 192.168.2.2
    Camera Port = 12345
Accessing the camera locally via http://192.168.2.2:12345 works fine, but accessing it remotely via http://74.1.2.3:12345 does not. I assume a route or port forward needs to be set on Router 1 (the FIOS ActionTec)? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Patrick
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

For future viewers, I will throw this out there. You don't normally want two routers with two port forward rules. The best practice is to give the second router a static ip on the lan of the first router and then put the second router in the dmz of the first router, and then apply port forward uses to the dmz'd router.
