Second user can't see hard drive icons on her desktop

I added my wife also as an administator, but she can't see the hard drive icons on her desktop. Not even the Macintosh HD icon. Hard drives are connected thru USB.

To show your hard disk icons on the Desktop, open Finder > Preferences > General and mark “Hard disks” and “External disks”. Your hard disks icons will show on the Desktop

  • Can't see hard drive icon on desktop

Just got my daughter a new MA 13" 2011...installing some software via the external superdrive when I realized that I can't see the HD icon on the desktop...am I missing something to make it visible? Other than that if functions properly...I can "see" it when installing software as it lets me choose it as an install destination....
    Thanks,
    Daryl

Activate the Finder, select Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General icon in the toolbar, check the boxes for what you want displayed on the Desktop. You can do the same thing for the sidebar by clicking on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar.

  • What happens when the external icon jumps on top on the hard drive icon on the desktop?

The external drive icon jumped to the hard drive icon on the desktop and after that happen the iMAC started running slow. Not sure how that happen or what is happening to the iMAC after it happen. All my applications are running and launching slow.  Also, when I tried moving files to the external drive I'll get a "error code -36". When I looked up the error message it says that the file is corrupted even though I could still open them. How can I fix this problem and not lose any files?  Thanks for any help.

RRFS has probably got the answer basically - but the combined contents of the two drives has probably maxed out the drive space on Macintosh HD, meaning the OS can't use virtual memory properly.
Open a Finder window and read the available space at the bottom.
If you have copied the drive, it should show as a folder under Macintosh HD in the Finder.
I hesitate to tell you to delete the whole folder as that may be too much for Finder to cope with. Open the folder and delete files and folders in small chunks, emptying the trash each time before doing the next..
Meanwhile, if you go to the Finder preferences and uncheck the item for Hard Disks in the desktop list, then move the icon for the external away from that corner before re-enabling the Hard disk option.
You may need to go to View options from the right-click menu on desktop and set 'arrange by' to 'none' in order to get the icon to stay where you want it.

  • What are all the hard drive icons on my desktop from app installations?

Most of the apps I have installed leave a new hard drive icon on my desktop, like these. Obviously the Macintosh HD is an good one to keep, but the others just keep accumulating and I find that to be a problem.
    What are these?
    What purpose do they serve?
    Can I delete them?
If no delete, can I hide them?
    Thanks

    1. Mounted disk images.
    2. They contain the software or its installer. The dmg format doesn't require separately storing the decompressed version of the data on the computer.
    3. Yes.

  • I have lost my Hard Drive icon on my desktop. How do I get it back.

I have lost my Hard Drive icon on my desktop. How do I get it back.

Quick thing to try: from the Finder, select the View menu and then select "Clean Up" in case it has wandered somewhere almost off the desktop.  Also, if it is "hiding" behind something, it will be revealed.

  • How do I put the hard drive icon on my desktop?

Been awhile since I've been back in the Mac world. Bought a new iMac (Intel-based). How do I put the hard drive icon on my desktop. When I go to it from the "go" menu in the finder, making an alias isn't even a choice!

Click anywhere on your desktop so that Finder is displayed up on the menu bar. Next open Finder Preferences... select the General tab and check the Hard disks box.

  • I can't see hard drive attached to Airport extreme from Windows XP computer

I have a Windows XP computer on my network. I can no longer see the network hard drive attached to Airport Extreme from the XP computer. I can see it with all the MACs on my network and all the Windows 7 computers. I can connect to the internet with the Windows XP computer. I previously had no problem seeing the network hard drive attached to the airport extreme from the XP computer and one day it just disappeared. I have deleted and reinstalled Bonjour, not just Bonjour print services. I can print to a network printer that is not attached to the Airport Extreme. Help!

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.

  • Can't See Hard Drive

I am freelancing at a company that is using 10.3 and the computer is set-up in such a way that the hard drive does not appear on the desktop. How is that possible? Is there a way to make one's hard drive invisible? I can only see it and access the folders within and thru the sidebar of the window. I don't like this. Is there a way to make the hard drive appear on the desktop? Thanks.

  • Time Machine over network: can't see hard drive

I've connected an external firewire 800 drive to our server and then chosen it in Server Preference as a drive that users can backup to, however when I try to select it in the user's Time Machine prefs I can't see the drive. Any ideas?

Is no one else having this problem?

  • Why can't my hard drive icon be altered?

With my G4 I was able to copy and paste a picture onto my hard drive icon, changing its appearance on the desk top. With my G5 and Tiger, I am no longer able to do this. Apple support was unaware of this issue. Is anyone else with Tiger and a G5 able to go to info and copy and paste a new icon for the drive? Is there anyone else having this problem with Tiger when a new icon cannot be copied?
Just a note: I am able to change my folder appearance by copying a picture in info. It is only the hard drive that does not respond.

Just to clarify: when you open the hard drive info window and paste, does the icon change there, but not on the desktop? Or will the icon not change in the info window either? If the latter, it might be worth temporarily (can't stress enough the temporary part...)changing the ownership rules. When you get the info window, go down to Ownership & Permissions, then the Details section and change owner from system to your name from the list (You'll be prompted to enter system password). Do the cut & paste, then re-set the owner to system. This has worked for me on stubborn system icons.
If the icon will change in the info window but not on the desktop, just have patience; sometimes it takes a couple restarts before tenacious icons change.
    Good luck

  • Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello  everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!
    Thank you
In the screen shots, 'Untitled' is model ST31, 'Spare' is model WDC

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!
    Thanks for helping anyway.

  • How to show hard drive icon on my desktop on iOS x

I'm using macbook pro and have iOS x. I want to have my hard drive icon appear on my desktop. Currently, it is not showing up. I would appreciate for an how to instruction.

Usually if you have Finder preferences set to Show (these items) Hard Drives,
on the Desktop, the icon of the computer's internal hard disk drive will appear
on the desktop in Finder as one of the options shown.
Click on Finder in main menu bar to see dropdown list; choose Preferences.
(in your OS X version, this may look different)
If you can't locate Finder menu that way, with other windows open, you can
click on the Finder (face icon) in the Dock, then the main menu will be Finder.
The current Mac OS X Mavericks is version 10.9.2.
The iOS does not run on these; only on iDevices.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I place the hard drive icon on my desktop on a 2011 mac mini? thank you

I Just bought a Mac Mini yesterday and its pretty cool and everything. But 2 things have left me scratching my Head. I cant see my hard drive image on the desktop nor on the finder! So I can´t access a lot of stull I transfered from my other computer.
Another thing is that When I transfered my users from my older computer (by old I mean a G5 Power PC) I saw the users but I couldnt find any data that belonged to any of them. I found Out after a very frustrating 2 and a half hour migration process. Any pointers?

  • Why isn't there a hard drive icon on my desktop anymore?

I followed someone's advice to replace my mother's ownership of my macbook pro with mine, which worked, but now there's no hard drive icon, so where so I put the files that I saved on a thumb drive to put back on after the transition??

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and check the box for it.

  • Server Admin can't see hard drive with user's Sites folder

I have a G5 XServer with two hard drives running 10.4.10 co-located at an ISP. I had recently brought it home and did a clean install of the OS and put new accounts (mainly to host multiple web sites) on it that were different than before, and this time I installed the operating system on the second hard drive leaving the original in place.
Everything works fine EXCEPT that when using +Server Admin+ to set the Web Sites to point to the various home directories (click web, click settings, click Site, Click 'plus' to add a new site or 'pencil' to edit one, then click '...' to select the folder), +Server Admin+ *cannot see the new home directories* on the hard disk I am currently using. It can only see the old directories on the old hard drive.
(Note: I observed the same issue when trying to set the FTP root directory.)
How can I get +Server Admin+ to look at files on the other hard drive (the one I am booting from)?

    Who cares?
Just type in the path to the directory you want to use. You don't have to select it via the File dialog.

    That didn't work either.
It turns out that both hard disks were named the same (I don't know how I screwed that up), so I went in with Disk Utility and changed one of the names.
