Second Video Card (PCI) for G5 1.8?

Hi folks.
I have the original G5 1.8. Love it. I currently run 2 17" LCD monitors with the stock video card which came with the box. Lovely. I am getting 2 more 17" LCDs and therefore need another video card to run them.
I need to know what my options are. I know PC video cards are different, so I have to see what models are available for Mac. I will obviously need a PCI card, which is no problem. I just don't know which models are compatible.
Is it really true that Mac video cards are twice the price of PC video cards? I'm seeing $50 PC video cards with the features that I want. No I'm not gaming. I'm a software developer. I just need something to push normal text and web stuff. Nothing fancy.
Love to hear your experience.
Cheers

DoH!
forgot about that one
tho the x800 has better performance no?
But having 2 DVI ports would mean a 30'' + a DVI or VGA as a second screen [likely what you have]
so i suppose the 9600

  • How do I add a second video card to my Compaq Presario CQ5300F Desktop?

I want to install a second video card to my Compaq Presario CQ5300F Desktop so I can use two monitors. What card should I get?

Here are the specs for your Compaq Presario CQ5300F Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model supports one VGA output via nVidia GeForce 6150SE onboard integrated graphics. This model also has a PCIe x16 graphics card expansion slot which will accept a PCIe x16 graphics card. According to the specs, installing a discrete graphics card in the PCIe x16 slot will disable the onboard integrated graphics.
The graphics card you purchase must support both monitors you wish to use with your computer. Additionally, most retail graphics cards require a 300 watt or greater system power supply. Currently , your computer has a 250 watt power supply and it will need to be replaced. Please consider the Corsair CX430, CX500, or CX600 series of power supplies to meet the new graphics card power requirements.
Alternatively, if this is mostly for word docs, spreadsheets, day trading and light video, you may wish to consider a USB-to-video adapter such as the eVGA UV Plus+ UV39 or one of the many other adapters on the market.

  • K9N2 Diamond no video after installing second video card

Hey everyone , I hate to sound desperate but I Need Help fast Please!! I have a lot of work to do on this system tomorrow , I really do not want to use this old PC I am on now.
First off let me say that I have had this board for about a month (maybe longer) and besides a slight power down issue it has been Rock solid and runs everything.
but my problem started tonight when I went to install a second video card that I bought , I had a 9600GT as a second card but it never made it into this build because my kids needed a video card for their PC so pay no attention to the 9600GT in my system config list. Again I have only ever had a single GTX260 installed in this system.
but I finally got an 8600GT (for PhysX only) and installed it tonight after downloading a driver form Nvidia , system was working fine , but after installing my 8600GT in the second PCI-e slot I powered up to NO VIDEO , so I figured I would have to reset CMOS to set the video cards or something so I powered down tried resetting that and restarted , still NO video.
So I removed the 8600GT PhysX card and restarted again and still NO video , so I tried the onboard VGA plug and still NO video.
I then tried to remove the battery , reset the CMOS (no power to the computer at all) and put everything back and still NO video!!
I must say I am at a loss here , shouldn't the "Clear CMOS" button actually clear the CMOS and boot the PC to default settings?? I simply do not understand this problem. what can I be doing wrong?
    Things I have Tried:
    all video ports Including onboard
Clearing the CMOS by holding down the button for 30 seconds several times
Removed the battery and pressed the Clear CMOS
    Removed 1 stick of RAM
    Video card in different slots
Powering on and off several times
PS: My 4 green lights are now from the top when they were al green before:
    Green
    Green
    Red
    Green
Please thank you for any help

Looks like time to take it all out of the case and give things a test run on the table top. Take it all apart down to the bare MB and start from scratch and see what happens.
Thanks for the reply Henry , I can try that as my motherboard tray comes out easily but I have a question , what is this supposed to accomplish? if this motherboard won't run in my case its useless to me. I think what I am going to try first though is a 9850 BE CPU to eliminate a bad CPU , and I must get the info off my HDD as it did not complete a backup last night due to this video thing , that is my main concern right now. I have had this case for 2.5 years and hav had 2 ASUS motherboards in it , it is very well grounded/proven. But I will try anything.
Quote from: Bas on 04-June-09, 14:09:16
Try with 1 strick of memory in the slot next to the cpu.
Thanks for the reply Bas , I already tried that last night and it did not work , I also tried 2 different video cards in ALL PCI-e slots and a single RAM chip in slot #2.
NOTE to BAS , your suggestion to turn off the WOL setting on my 2 nic cards in another thread worked all day for me yesterday , thank you for that suggestion.
Is there ANY other way to clear the CMOS other than with the push button and the battery out?
thanks guys , I'll try another CPU tonight and see if that works , if not I will try to RMA or just junk the board as if I cannot get it to post its useless.

  • Can I add a Second Video card to my power mac g5

    Hi all,
    I have a Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5.
is it possible to add a second video card to this system. I want to have the possibility of having 3-4 displays.
if it can be done.. do I need a pci or pcix card and can someone recomend one that is available and of good quality..
    thanks

Yes you can add a second card but you need to be sure if your machine is pci, pcix or pcie. The 2.5ghz G5 Quad is a pcie machine. I added a second 256mb card to it and now an running 3 24" and 1 17" monitors. Tom

  • Video Card Recommendation for Power Mac G5 Quad

Can anyone recommend a video card upgrade for my Power Mac G5 Quad?
I am now running the nVIDIA GeForce 6600 card that came in the machine, but I'm wondering how much performance increase I'll see with a large image library in Aperture if I upgrade. I'm interested in all comments.
Also, is there a "medium" upgrade and a "kick-***" upgrade?
    Thanks!
    G5 Quad / 4.5GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I hate to say it: At the moment there is no graphics card upgrade available for the G5 Quad and the other PCI-Express Power Macs. There are a lot of threads about this topic in this forum. It is simply a shame that Apple does not offer any graphics upgrade for their former top of the line machines - but they do offer them for their new Intel Mac Pro. Maybe one day ATI will offer an upgrade, but at the moment this is just a rumor. All you can do now is to buy a reflashed PC version of the GeForce 7800 or buy a ridiculously priced spare part GeForce 7800 from a store who is willing to sell you one (there is one on the web but i forgot the url).

    Hi Lionel,
As a general rule of thumb, the ATI Rage 128 Pro will not support a 20" LCD. That being said, there are reports of it doing just that (possibly the edition that went into the cube).
I'm not that familiar with the ins and outs of the Cube, so I can't give you authoritative information on it.

  • PCI video card replacement for PowerMac G3 (Blue and White)

Hi, I am new to this forum. I apologize if this issue has been addressed before, but I have been reading over the forum for the last 2 days and tried all the steps I could find. I have an old PowerMac G3 (Blue and White).
It used to run fine. I had a friend with a similar computer and he
needed a video card, so I gave him the one in my Mac G3, because I was not using it at the time.
Now, I have decided I want to use it. I am running into an issue with the video (It takes PCI), I get no display, but I can hear the hard drive spin, it lights up, I hear the Apple "ding".
I have about 6 PCI video cards laying around, and I have tried all of them, resetting the CUDA each time. Still cannot get a display.
I have tried different slots on the motherboard, checked the PRAM battery, (it was good). Tried booting off a live Linux CD for power PCs, tried the commandoption+pr until I hear the apple "ding" go off 2x, I have tried a different monitor and monitor cable.
Nothing seems to work, I need to know what I should try next.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

"I have about 6 PCI video cards laying around, and I have tried all of them, resetting the CUDA each time. Still cannot get a display."
If these graphics cards are designed for use in PCs, they won't work in your Mac. Compatible graphics cards must be programmed with a Mac ROM. Some "PC" cards can have their EEPROM chip flashed with a Mac ROM, provided that someone has extracted the particular Mac ROM code for the card in question. A web search will provide leads for that. If you just want a decent graphics card, go for a Radeon 7000 Mac Edition (2002 vintage card). If you check eBay, you should be able to find a flashed "PC" Radeon 7000 card. I'd try to get the one with 64 MBs of DDR memory, as opposed to the 32 MB model. If you don't mind spending more $$, you can find a more current PCI graphics card for your G3, like the Radeon 9200 at Other World Computing.

  • No signal from second video card

I'm resurrecting an ancient machine, putting Arch on it and making it useful again.
The VGA output is flakey, not working at the highest resolution my monitor can support.  And I found an old PCI video card and threw it into the machine, hoping it would be better.  Trouble is, I get no signal at all from the second card.  Nothing sent to the monitor at all.
Running lspci, I see both VGA cards:

The Voodoo 3 sends nothing at all to the monitor.  No console when booting up.  I haven't found any errors in the log.  Since lspci finds the card, what else do I need to do to make it work?

  • Video card decision for CS5

    Hi all.
I have just purchased CS5 Production Premium, and am trying to decide on the Nvidia GTX 285 or the Quadro FX 3800. We are moving from SD to HD footage and outputting to MiniDV, Beta SP or DVD for broadcast TV.
Would anyone care to give me a quick comparison of these two cards from experience, or even just thoughts on your experience with either card? My current setup with CS4 and the GTS250 just won't cut it with HD, as it takes forever to render anything. I don't have the time or patience to just sit and wait....
    Thanks a lot.
    Keith

    Keith,
In theory more cores should be faster, but we have not yet seen that during our testing. It may be the immaturity of CUDA/MPE support. One system was tested with both the 285 and the 480 and there was no discernible difference, despite double the cores.
In theory more memory should be faster because it reduces the latency of RAM - GPU - RAM transfers, but again, no hard data yet. We have seen the negative effect of dual processors versus single processor on MPE rendering however, due to the latency introduced by dual processor systems.
There is not much difference between the various suppliers, Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY, POV, etc. so the choice is based on specific features one may have over the other in terms of better cooling, quieter fan, longer warranty, better price, higher clock speed, more memory and the like. Use customer reviews on sites like Newegg to find which ones are liked.
The law of diminishing returns may apply to video cards as well. Theoretically the 480 will be faster than the 470, but if the difference in cores will compensate the difference in price and seconds gained is something to be seen.

  • Need help ASAP: No video card signal for neo4 plat

I just bought a new case, motherboard, ram, video card, power supply, and CPU. i took my drives from my old Dell and placed them into this case and the MSI neo4 plat. motherboard (specs at the bottom). after getting it to post, i noticed there was no video. i triple checked for anything that wasn't hooked up or loose. everything seemed good. i'm using a VGA monitor. i looked at the D-bracket 2 and noticed that it had 3 red lights and one green in the lower right hand corner. in the manual this means no video signal... well obviously. what does this mean and how can i fix it? my video card's fan is working. i see no spot for a PCI express power input. any ideas? i use my computer a lot and need to do some things before i leave for vacation on the 15th. i'd like to resolve any issues before i leave so i can relax about it when i get back.
    thanks,
    Zack

well it seems things have gotten worse, after taking out the ram the other day and putting it back in thinking it was a ram problem, which it turned out not to be, it is giving me a ram problem. i just snapped em in a few times in all possible configurations and nothing is changing.

  • Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore, Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore

Looking for advice on Mac Pro with a dying video card. This the early Xeon dual core 3.0Ghz with an ATI Radeon X1900. Maybe the Nvidia Quadro 4500. I know there is s Quadro 4800 which I don't know if will will work with this older Mac Pro. Links and advice is appreciated.

Both cards will work with your computer although that's not stated on Apple's website. I'm using a 5770 in a first generation Mac Pro and it works quite well. I can't get the best performance from it because my MP only has PCI Express 1.0 slots.

I was looking around and it seems I need to get a new card and install it directly to my motherboard. This is all do able for me I just need to know which new card would be compatible with my model of notebook. If anyone knows which one or where I can begin to look for one I would greatly appreciate the info. Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
The only way you can upgrade the video in your notebook is to replace the entire motherboard with one that has a better video solution.
However, when you look at chapter 3 of the service manual at the link below, you are already at the top of the mark regarding what video chip is on the available motherboards.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01689926.pdf
So, you will either have to live with the status quo or buy a new notebook.

    Stuart, welcome to the forum.
The truth is, any video card that will run properly with the 300W PSU in the computer, will not be much better than the integrated video.  Most newer mid-level cards require a PSU with a minimum of 400W watts.  I have searched for other members many times without any luck.  If you want to upgrade the PSU, it will give you far more options.

  • Video card options for a new Mac Pro

My G5 recently died on me and I am getting ready to upgrade to a Mac Pro. My question is regarding the video card options. I will be using Aperture 2, Photoshop CS2, and Final Cut Studio, but, not doing HD work. I am trying to decide between the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB and the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB.
As my G5 has stopped working, I was not prepared for an upgrade and I am trying to cut corners where I can. Does anyone have any experience comparing these two cards? Am I being to nitpicky about a $150 upgrade? My gut feeling is that I should not be questioning the extra cost and go with the NVIDIA, but, just want to make sure that I am not wasting money for a difference I will not see, as I do not play games on my Mac. Any opinions and input from other users is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Very interesting, I went to that link and then followed the one for Pro Apps:
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper10.html
And, it states that the Radeon with less memory will consistently outperform the Nvidia on programs like Final Cut and Aperture. Guess I AM better off saving the money. Thank you for your direction!
