Secondary drive storage and retrival

Hello, I've attempted to save music (and itunes) on a recently installed drive. After I copy everything from 10GBprimary to 2ndary drive I erase files and free up space on primary drive. This erases everything copied onto 2ndary as well. apple tech explained to me that what I should do is copy and paste data from one drive to another and not simply drag folder over, that didn't work? Then I was told the 2ndary drive needs operating sys. to run itunes and also that partitioning would combine both drives? After some research and another phone conversation with Apple tech this was contradicted? At this point I'm confused and frustrated. what do to do? I just want to free up primary drive of music (and itunes) and store it on 2ndary drive? is this possible? Thank you. jp

Hi, jpok, and welcome to the Discussions!
Here's a workable approach to moving and maintaining your iTunes Music on another drive:
From your Home Folder, navigate to the Music Folder, the iTunes folder, and then to the iTunes Music Folder. Drag or copy/paste this folder to your other drive, which will copy it there. (Don't command drag to move it without copying, it's risky.) Leave the iTunes Library and its xml file right where they are in the iTunes folder. After the copy is completed, drag your original iTunes Folder to your desktop for temporary safekeeping.
Next, launch iTunes. From the iTunes Menubar, choose Preferences... , which will bring up a popup window. Click on the Advanced icon in the window's toolbar. Select the "General" tab there, and in the section that says iTunes Music folder location, check the two boxes there and then click on the "Change..." button. In the window that appears, navigate to your other drive, find and highlight the iTunes Music Folder there and click "Choose". Your iTunes music should now be completely accessible from iTunes on the primary drive. Moreover, any music files added to iTunes will automatically be placed in the iTunes Music folder on the second drive, rather than your primary drive.
Quit and relaunch iTunes and check the results, insuring that all went well. Highlight one of the songs in the iTunes window, go to the Menubar and select File>Show Song File. Notice that the song file is now referenced to the second drive. When you're satisfied, drag the original iTunes Music folder that you dragged to your desktop into the trash, emptying the trash. You're done. Enjoy!

ps: Have you considered moving your entire startup volume to the 120GB drive? It's easily done by cloning it there. If you're interested, post back.

  • Using Time Capsule for Backup Drives, Storage, and an iTunes Server?

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule to accompany my Macbook. The Time Capsule connects to my household's existing wifi network and is not connected by a cord to my computer. I went through a great deal of difficulty setting it up, but now it's time to start using it. I just canceled my off-site backup service, so I really need and appreciate your help and advice.
I want my Time Capsule to perform a few different tasks:
    1) Time Machine backups for TWO different user accounts on my Macbook
    2) Additional file storage
    3) iTunes server
Is this possible? If so, how would I accomplish it?

    1) Time Machine backups for TWO different user accounts on my Macbook
Time Machine backs up the ENTIRE hard drive. It is not user dependent.
    2) Additional file storage
    Yes
    3) iTunes server
You can use it to store your iTunes library. However iTunes will need to run on your MacBook to play the music.

  • Drive Storage and longevity question

I LOVE my MAC PRO and am setting up some new drives and have a simple question:
I have 1TB drive that houses all my most valuable work that I keep in an internal drive bay. I have a secondary 1TB drive that I intend to mirror the first drive. I can't use RAID in my Mac due to a current Pro Tools limitation. I use SuperDuper to image my drives.
Would it be wise to just put the second drive into a second drive bay for easy mirroring or would external Firewire be better as far as longevity goes?
I'm just worried that if they are both spinning and one fails, the second might fail at nearly the same time and I'd be screwed.
External drive would be more of a pain in the arse to do my auto-backs, but it would allow me to turn the drive off while not doing weekly backups.
What do you guys think? Thank you!
Also is it more wise to do compressed image type backups, or uncompressed backups that I could access the files immediately with?

Right, if it's not in 3 places it doesn't exist and yes I'm on a nice UPS system. I noticed my whole rig got much more stable after pure sinewave output upgrade too.
So mirrored copies copy bad data. What method/software would you use or recommend?
I was thinking about multiple compressed backups with different dates so if one goes bad I would revert days back.
What eSata case do you use/recommend? I have a Venus eSata drive but haven't tried it yet, I couldnt get it to connect. Are there different eSata cables different from internal SATA connectors?
Thanks much for your time and help.

  • External drive storage and Time Machine backup.

I don't want to keep photos on my hard drive anymore as they take up too much disk space.
    1. Can the "Pictures" directory that exists on all Macs be assigned a new location on an external drive? ie, I save photos to the "Pictures" directory and they automatically go to the external drive.
    2. If I store all my photographs on an external drive can I have Time Machine back them up to another external drive I currently use for backing up my HD? If so, how do I set this up in Time Machine?
    Merci buckets!

Yes, as long as it's formatted for a Mac, and you tell Time Machine to stop excluding it (externals are excluded by default).
If so, how do I set this up in Time Machine?

  • I have a Time Capsule with 2tb of storage, and an I-Mac with 500Gb. (which is at capacity) Can I use the Time Capsule to store data in addition to backing up the hard drive?

I have a Time Capsule with 2tb of storage, and an I-Mac with 500Gb. (which is at capacity) Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?

Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?
Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you?

  • How do i download itunes to a secondary drive on my computer?  My C drive is full and that's where itunes wants to automatically download

How can I download Itunes to a secondary drive on my computer?  My C drive is full but that's where ITunes wants to automatically download.  I can't figure out how to download it to a K drive.

    You do not.
iTunes like all programs is installed and only runs on the main drive (C) of the computer.
You can move the media to another drive.
    Close iTunes.
Move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the default location to the desired location.
While holding the SHIFT key, launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new library or locate existing, choose the option to locate existing.
Point iTunes to the new location.
Then go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and change the location of the iTunes library there.

  • Can you install some CC apps on one drive and others on a secondary drive?

    Hi,
I am running Win 7 and Adobe CC. I have a 125 Gg SSD HD and it is now full, but i have only installed a few CC apps on it. Can I install others on a secondary drive? In other words, some CC apps on C: and others on D:?? or must they all be on the same drive?
    Thanks,

What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

  • External hard drive /storage for use with mini and XP (bootcamp)

Never purchased an external hard drive (storage) before so not sure if this is possible.
Basically I have an intel mini with 60gb hard drive, which I have now allocated 20 to xp via boot camp. I'm quickly using up the 20gb with a few games so I want to purchase an external storage device that will work with both osx and windows - is this possible?
My mini hasnt 'seen' a few USB devices, can anyone recommend one which is compatible with the intel mini?
would any external drive have to be partinioned as well?

I still do not know which format would be the best. That is so that I can use it easily between mac OSX and windows. Is FAT32 the only true option? How limited is it? I heard it is limited to 4GB file size for windows and 32 GB for Mac. Are there other sources I have not found with more concrete information on the limitations of this format?
I really do still need this information and I need to back up my drive before I can take the computer in for service.

  • Are the main differences between the 768 GB Flash storage and the 3 TB Fusion Drive?

Are the main differences between the 768 GB Flash storage and the 3 TB Fusion Drive?

    About Fusion Drive
Fusion Drive combines 128GB of super fast flash storage with a traditional hard drive. It automatically and dynamically moves frequently used files to flash for quicker access. With Fusion Drive in your iMac, booting is up to 1.7 times faster, and copying files and importing photos are up to 3.5 times faster.* Over time, as the system learns how you work, Fusion Drive makes your Mac experience even better. All while letting you store your digital life on a traditional, roomy hard drive.
    About Flash Storage
For maximum performance, you can configure your iMac with 768GB of flash storage instead of a traditional hard drive. Flash storage delivers up to four times the performance of a traditional drive — speed you’ll notice when you start up your iMac, launch an app, or browse your photo library.
In addition the prue flash option is $900 more the then 3TB fusion drive.

  • Secondary drive sharing across network between 10.3.9 and 10.4.6 OS's

    4 machines, A,B,C,D.
    "A"&"B" OSX 10.3.9
    "C"&"D" OSX 10.4.6
"A" has a secondary ATA (bay B) interal drive and several firewires
    ATA manufactuer SEAGATE ST3250823AS
    FIREWIRES from lacie and smartdisk
"B" sees all drives mounted on machine "A" and can R/W
Machines "C" and "D" can only see the primary ATA drive from machine "A"
Apple support suggested checking for updated 10.4.6 firmware on non-apple supplied hard-drives (secondary ATA and firewires listed on apple store). Done. Firmware was up to date. It appears that there is a cross OS bug with sharing secondary drives.
Our options at this time appear to be:
    1) Upgrade A and B to OS 10.4.6
We have adapated custom unix based software to 10.3.9 and functionality in 10.4.6 is unknown. Since the unix package is sensitive, woudl rather not upgrade the older systems.
    2) Downgrade C and D to OS 10.3.9
    Can this even be done?
    3) Get them talking without OS changes
    This would be ideal.
Your thoughts and support are much appreciated.
    Thank you

No way, since you run custom unix software, upgrading to 10.46 hoping that it may work is unacceptable

  • Secondary drives are locked and unuseable

I can not access either of my 2 non-startup drives. One on an internal bay the other and external USB drive/esata drive. When I am logged in as a user I get an error message that states I do not have sufficient priveleges. When I log in as a root user I can access the drives, but only as read only. When I try to change permissions in any way, I can't. There is always a lock icon in front of the drive in Disk utility as well as the info panel. When I moved the USB drive to another computer it was also locked.Disk utility does not show any errors on the drive.
My startup drive works seems to work just fine.
This all started when I applied permissions to my startup drive. I did the permission repairs and reset the password which allowed the computer to work, but what now?

Never mind this post. I found and applied these two commands in terminal from my user account and after rebooting the drives work fine.
sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/"my drive name" and sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"my drive name"

  • Can an old iMac G3 drive running system 10.2.8 and system 9 be mounted in the secondary drive bay of a G4 800 Mhz running 10.4.11 and boot from the 10.2.8?

I've done this and the G4 800 Mhz boots up from system 9 on the old iMac G3 just fine, but when I boot up from its system 10.2.8, it runs for only 5 minutes or so and the grey screen comes down telling me to re-boot.  I've run Norton on the system 9 disk and system 10 disk utilities on the system 10 disk of the old iMac G3 and all is fine with it.  Is there some incompatibilities with running the old iMac G3 230 Mhz from the G4 800 Mhz that causes this to happen?  I can access all my old files on the iMac G3 when I boot up with extensions off (holding down the shift key when I boot up), but I would like to be able to use the USB functions when I boot it up.

It sounds like you have a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002, and according to the program Mactracker, it should be able to run on the OS 9 and the OS 10.2.8.
I don't know which version of Norton (Utilities?) you ran on the old iMac drive, but I suspect that might be the problem.  This is from the iMac Tray Loading Service Source Manual:
    HFS Plus Formatted Drives
The hard drive in the iMac is formatted with HFS Plus (also referred to as Mac OS Extended format). It is important to note that Norton Utilities version 3.5 is not compatible with HFS Plus (or Mac OS Extended format), and in fact, can destroy data on the hard drive.
Norton Utilities version 3.5.3 or 3.5.2 will not attempt to repair a drive formatted with Mac OS Extended format and versions 3.5.1 and earlier cannot recognize that a hard drive is in Mac OS Extended format and can result in hard drive corruption and loss of all data on the drive.
Note: When diagnosing hard drive problems, it is important to verify whether or not the customer may have used the wrong disk repair software for their drive before assuming that the problem is hardware related.
If you experience problems with a hard drive that has been formatted with HFS+, Apple Computer recommends using Disk First Aid 8.2 (which is included on the system software CD that ships with the iMac). Disk First Aid 8.2 can be used to recover data that may have been deleted by Norton Utilities. (See the Symantec Web site at NO LONGER A VALID LINK-REMOVED FROM ARTICLE for more information on Norton Utilities and Mac OS Extended format.)
Some other disk utility and disk locking programs are incompatible with Mac OS Extended format. Before you attempt to use a disk utility or disk locking program, make sure the version you have is compatible with Mac OS Extended format. Check the documentation that came with the program or contact the manufacturer or the vendor that supplied the program.
Use the Get Info command in System 8.1 to determine how a hard drive has been formatted. Drives formatted with HFS will appear as “Mac OS Standard”, while drives formatted with HFS+ will appear as “Mac OS Extended.”
I hope some of this helps.
    Good luck.
