Secondary Hard Drive on my Computer

Hi, I've got myself a 30 gig secondary hard drive along with my primary, a 6 gig. I recently downloaded itunes into the big one, and i was wondering if my purchases will also download into that hard drive. My computer will probably crash if it goes into the primary.

No, you need to tell iTunes where your storage directory is:

  • Share a secondary hard drive on a Mac to a Windows computer.

    Hello,
I have a PowerMac G4 AGP, at home which we all use as a server. It has a secondary 500GB SATA hard drive, which is split, one half holds films the other music.
I can connect to it from my MacBook Pro, and have a choice of which hard drive I want to connect to, but when my brother tries from a Win XP Sony Laptop, we go to Workgroup computers and the G4 is listed, with only the User Account folder and the printer attached to the G4, it doesn't show the secondary hard drive.
Any help with this would be really great.
On a separate note, does anyone know how to make the secondary hard drive on the PowerMac G4 mount to my laptop home screen, when I start up Mac OSX, as currently I have to go into networking in the finder, choose the computer, enter username and password, and then choose a hard drive, I would prefer it if it mounted like an external hard drive, so I could use it for back up and itunes etc.
Again any help would be much appreciated,

I just have Macs, but I use SharePoints to share an external drive across my network.

  • I can't move photos from iPhoto to my secondary hard drive or to a burn folder.  I have never had a problem with this before.  This is something new.   They will not drop into either folder.  Nothing happens.

I can't move photos from iPhoto to my secondary hard drive or to a burn folder.  I have never had a problem with this before.  This is something new.   They will not drop into either folder.  Nothing happens.
I checked my secondary harddrive and there is plenty of memory.
I emptied my burn folder but the photos still will not drop into it.
I created a new burn folder, no luck with this either.
230 photos is the maximum size of the events I am trying to move from iPhoto to save elsewhere.
I have shut down and restarted my computer.   No change. The photos still will not drop out of iPhoto.
My Mac Computer Storage shows that I have 62.2GB free out of 249.2GB (movies, photos and contacts taking up the most space)
My Lacie External Harddrive (2TB capacity) shows that I have 1.79TB available.  It shows that 207,729,520,640 bytes (207.73 GB on disk) are used.
I have never had this problem before.  It is usually very easy to move my photos from iPhoto.
I am not a computer expert (I work in surgery so don't have a need for lots of computer knowledge) so please explain in simple terms.
Thank you so much for any help you can provide.
    I really appreciate it.

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.

Hi Jolly, I tried 3 different HDD's all of them were reformated and reimaged with the HP image from this laptop. When I try to populate the drive, it just closes the window. Same with the dvd drive. Other then no able to write to the dvd/cd drive, everything else is perfect. But that is not good enough...

  • Secondary hard drive disappears

I have a P35-Neo2 MS-7345, bios V1.1, P4 3.0 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 5, 4GB PC-6400 dual channel, XP Pro 5.1.2600 SP3, Western Digital 75gb on SATA port 0, WD 500gb on port 1, DVD RAM on port 6, AHCI enabled, but I have had the same problem without AHCI.
When I first installed this board a couple of years ago it had a 325gb Western Digital Caviar Blue as a secondary drive.  The drive would randomly disappear from Windows Explorer and from bios.  Sometimes if I rebooted it would reappear, sometimes I had to turn off the power supply, move it to another port and restart for it to come back.
I downloaded Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools and ran them.  They showed that Windows was not setup for large drives and made a registry change.  The drive worked for about 6 months and then started disappearing again.  Windows ran a scandisk and found bad sectors so I assumed the drive was failing.  At this point I placed the drive in an external case and hooked it up through USB.  It worked flawlessly for 5 weeks.
During all of this, I also installed a Seagate 75gb SATA2 drive.  It too would vanish after a very short time.  I blamed the problem on the Seagate not getting along with the WD but the problem persisted even after I removed the Seagate. The Seagate has also worked for months as a USB drive without problem.
I have noticed on the internet most people with this problem replaced their drive and it fixed the problem.  I also notice that in most cases it appears to be Intel chipsets on the board.
I purchased a new WD Caviar Green yesterday and installed the new drive using WD Lifeguard Tools to set it up and within half an hour it disappeared while copying files.  I once again changed ports but it wouldn't come back.  I disconnected the drive, started the computer, turned it off again, re-connected the drive and when I started it up the drive reappeared but vanished again after a few minutes.  I placed this drive in the external case and it has been working perfectly now for a few hours.
Is this a common problem with the P35 and any ideas on how to fix it?

I agree, changing 2 items can confuse the issue and as I stated I am assuming it is the motherboard at this moment.
But, I also have good reasons for that assumption.
First, the PSU was installed with the 945P before the P35 and there were no problems.
Also, no other SATA drives are affected other than any secondary hard-drives.  The primary runs on the same power line as the secondary but never drops out or creates any problems.  The DVD is also SATA and is never affected.  With the DVD disconnected to take load off of the PSU, the drive still drops out on occasion.  The secondary drive has worked for as long as 6 months without a problem, but when it does drop out, the only way to get it back is to turn off all power and change ports, sometimes 3 or 4 times and then it works again for a period of time.  You would think a PSU would affect all drives and the port would be irrelevant.
I will be putting together another computer for my security system with a large single drive using the P35 and will try a new power supply at that time, just in case.  I will install a secondary drive just to test it in case the above assumptions are incorrect, but that will be a little ways in the future.

I had a problem with S-ATA HDDs dropping out and it was S-ATA power problem and problem went away after getting the Corsair PSU. For some reason it was only S-ATA HDDs and nothing else in the system was affected. Have you tested with the other PSU on the 945P MB just to be sure it wasn't cause of the problem? Changing more than 1 part at a time does not necessarily point to the actual root of the problem.

I had toclear the hard drive of my computer and reinstall Windows 7.  Now I want to transfer all the music and photos from my iPad back onto my computer.  I authorized the computer (it is the ONLY computer authorized on this account - and this is the ONLY account on this iPad).  ITunes then downloaded my purchases...or at least it tried - out of the hundreds of tracks I have purchased, it managed one album that I bought over a year ago and NOTHING else.  So I tried to Sync - since on older versions of iTunes (that were SO MUCH MORE user friendly) that would do the job -transferring things that were only on the iPad onto the computer and vice versa.  It doesn't do that anymore.  So I went from my iPad's summary to the Music tab - the box for Music was not checked but when I checked it said the only thing it could do was erase EVERYTHING from my iPad and replace it with what was on my computer (that ONE album).  What is going on?
Why hasn't iTunes downloaded my other purchases since I authorized the computer? (there are over 3,000 tracks...not 18)
How can I download my iPad to my computer?

-Me again - it also won't upload the few new pictures I have on the computer onto the iPad without deleting all the photos that are already there....

Mort already answered you, but I thought I would throw in, if you are going to a larger drive, you might consider consolidating/moving everything to the one larger drive if you can simply because it makes backing up or moving your library again much easier if everything is in the one folder.

I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still showing 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it backed up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that memory or to get it the music back, there is approximately over 1400 songs on it?

What is the memory being used by, is it Other? If it is, that means the iPod can no longer read the music, so it has put it all in "Other".
The usual fix for this is to allow the iPod to Sync with its iTunes Library. If that doesn't work, the next option is to Restore the iPod using the Restore command in iTunes, on the Device/Summary pane.
Unless you are very (very) lucky, I suspect that you are going to have to Restore your iPod. Restoring will remove everything form the iPod and put back onto it only what it finds in your iTunes Library, which you say is currently empty.
    If you have to rebuild your Library after this issue, by adding all the music back again, this is going to be hard to hear, but for the future, you may want to consider always having a backup of your library. The easiset way to back the Library up is;
if the Library is small enough, burn it to a DVD, as digital files, not a "music CD".
If your Library is too large for a DVD, buy yourself an external hard drive and copy the Library onto the drive. Remember to update the backup every so often.

  • Two Hard Drives on my computer - one totally full the other totally empty - how do I manage this - windows 8

Hi I have two hard drives on my computer running Windows 8. One is called OS (C:) and has 10.2GB free of 186GB, the other is Data (D:) and has 258GB of 258GB free.
I have just tried to update to Windows 8.1 and have had an error message saying there is not enough space on the OS drive to update as it needs 20GB.
What do I do about this? how do I get to use the 258GB of free space on the Data drive?
I'd be grateful for an answer!

    Hi,
In addition to the above information,
If your operating system is Windows 2008 and higher(Server) or Windows Vista and higher(Client).
Then you can use the native tool Disk Management to solve your requirement.
For opening Disk Management, Right click -> Computer -> Select Manage -> As result Computer Management console opens -> In the left pane under storage select Disk Management.
In the Disk Management, for extending your C: drive,
    - Since your partition layout as,  C: drive | D: drive.
    - After shrinking D: drive, the layout will be C: drive | D: drive | Unallocated space.
    - Since the unallocated space is not contiguous, when you right-click C: drive the "Extend Volume" option will be greyed out.
    - So to solve your requirement, you have to backup the data on D: drive -> Delete D: drive -> right-click on the c drive and select "Extend Volume" -> enter the size you want to add
    - Finally you can create a new D: drive from the remaining unallocated space and restore the backup data.
Checkout the below thread on similar discussion,

to increase space in c drive

SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.

I need to add a secondary hard drive to my time capsule. Can something that has been set up for a windows machine work without re-formatting?

In addition to Niel's comments, if you plan to use Time Machine to backup a Mac to the secondary drive.....that application needs a drive that has been specifically formattted for Mac.  That would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
PCs can also read and write to the Mac formatted drive.
