Secondary IDE slows down SATA on KT4

I have two SATA drives as a striped array on the RAID controller of my KT4 ultra.
Also:
DVD ROM as master on primary IDE
DVD writer as master on secondary IDE
Windows XP takes about 5 minutes to boot unless I disable the secondary IDE in the BIOS. Then it takes seconds to boot.
I swapped the DVD and writer but it's the same.
I just get the XP logo hanging there for ages.
All devices show OK in device manager, and work fine. I have done a fresh XP install with lates drivers.
Should I put both on the primary??

I have not tried both on the same cable as they worked when I had a normal hard drive on IDE0.
I thought the rule was always to put them on a differant IDE channel if poss.
Any other thoughts, as I did not want to have both on same channel.

I sent an email from my iPhone 3GS (via iCloud account) with around 16GB of attachment. It slowed down the phone for a few seconds, then appeared to be sent. However, the message is now not in the sent box, and I can't see an outbox at all. Any ideas?

That changes things a little bit , login to icloud.com and see if you can find it in your sent folder.
If it is there you did send, just need to wait until you phone syncs "sent folder" perhaps on wifi.
If it is not, then I would say it is lost and you may have to send again. They have 20 megs limit, so make sure that message plus attachment is under that limit.

I have a revision a imac g5 with the same problem with only macbreak podcast. I know leo laporte said that the podcast was done in 1080p and my computer with its built in 64 megabyte graphics card might have trouble with this podcast but your machine must have a better graphics card than mine. 1080p requires at least 128 megabytes of graphics memory built in. My machine played this podcast on quicktime fine until they came out with the update to quicktime last week or two ago. I was going to upgrade my memory until I came accross your story and your machines doing the same thing with much better specs. I think it might be the quicktime update that is causing a problem. Maybe Leo will talk about this problem since he is doing a mac show about macs.

I am trying to convert a video clip, already in imovie so that I can slow down the clip speed, but I keep getting an error -34.  Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi Russ,
Thanks for your response. I am not an experienced user of FC or other video editing software but if its that hit and miss I think I will go to the trouble of finding some better software - I have a busy enough life as is, I don;t want to get into second guessing what a software problem might be!
I have just successfully exported my video to a master file using one of the Apple codec options so it looks like it could be to do with the H.264 codec.  I am wondering if Apples Compressor software would solve this problem - the only way to try this it to buy it, there is not trial for the compressor app.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • My computer has slowed down, my computer has slowed down, any ideas on how to speed it up

My MAC has slowed down, any ideas on how to speed it up?

How much free disk space do you have?
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
         a) verify the disk
         b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
          is being checked.
        http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.

Look at what is happening with your Mac when you run Activity Monitor.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
    1) Be sure you select all processes in the double arrow selection just be low the window title line.
    2) Click on the CPU tab on the lower half of the window to see how much time you are using and if any applications are hogging the CPU.
    3) Be sure the triangle in the CPU title is in the down position.  This will list the processes from high to low.
You can gain some understanding of Activity Monitor by  looking at it every once in a while.  Look at the small graph.
Here is how I have my CPU display set up:
Do you need more cpu memory.
Click on System Memory to get statistics on memory usage.  You should have some free memory.
The number to look at is page outs.
Mine is 13397. This means that some of my programs and data had to be written to disk because cpu memory filled up for a time.  It means my programs ran a little slower than they could have.  I could run fewer programs, deal with the slowness, or buy more memory. I'd say you want at least 512meg of memory for 10.4.
If the entry for entry for Page ins/outs is:
    Page ins/outs: 29163/0
Notice I have 0 pageouts which says that I am not using my harddrive for extra memory space.  Thus, I have enough memory.
Activity Monitor has a neat feature where it can display a dynamic dock icon.  In Activity Monitor View > Dock icon > Show cpu history.

  • When i try to burn my iMovie to a dvd it does not play correctly. It gets stuck or slows down at parts...please any tips, ideas or help? Thanks

When I create my movie on iMovie it plays great. Then I try to burn it to a dvd and it doesn't play well on the dvd. It either gets stuck at parts or slows down or skips a little. I try to save it to my theatre and burn it that way. Or I have added it to my documents and burned it that way. Either way worked. Any tips, ideas, help or solutions would be very much appreciated. This is driving me crazy and i am wasting so many dvds! Thanks!

Ok then tell me this what is that DVD your having problem watching then? And what Region Code are you from like Euro is Region 2 and so on??? Could be the Region problem on the DVD doesn't match your drive Region as well?

    Hi There,
I bought a macbook pro last July and in the last week I have noticed it slowing down, loading webpages takes longer etc.... I updated to yosemite recently but I am not sure that is the issue. Could it be something to do with cache, someone was trying to download movies on it so maybe I have a small virus?

  • My iMac 8.1 was slowing down and had permissions problems. I backed everything up, and then re-installed. Now all I get is a black screen. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: HDD-1336. Help!

My iMac 8.1 (10.6.8 ) was slowing down and had recurrent permissions problems, mostly with Java. I backed everything up, and then re-installed from time machine. Now all I get is a black screen which says I need to reboot. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: 4 MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1336 or HDD-1327. When I reboot from the OSX CD and start disc utilities everything checks out OK. When I reload 10.5.2 from the OSX CD everything seems to work OK and no more permissions problems. But then I loose all my email and safari stuff. Anyone have any ideas short of going back to my old PC?

    Cheers. Don
No unfortunatley it's too old, you are referring to Target Display Mode which became avialble in 2009, your 2008 needs to have the HD replaced. I'd still do that if everything else is OK or you can simply buy a new MM and display or even a new iMac  or an Apple refurbished iMac to save money.

  • Photoshop CC slows down suddenly, for several minutes

    Hi!
I have a problem with Photoshop CC. I sit on a 27" iMac, 8GB RAM and an i5 processor, OS X Mavericks, Wacom intuos Pro tablet.
My problem, that suddenly occurs is tha Photoshop CC suddenly slows down to a halt. No error messages, it just gets very very slow. The first sign is that I suddenly cant zoom. I try to zoom, and nothing happens. Then the cursor, still able to move around with no problem, wont change to an arrow when hovering over buttons or menu items. If I open Safari, everything works fine, exept if I go back to Photoshop, then only the properties window will show. Photoshop is like this for up to ten minutes, then suddenly everything happens at once. All the zooming, closing of images if I tried that (with the keyboard), and then it is all fine again.
The problem occurs both when I do complex work with many layers, but also when doing simpler work with just a few layers.
I have 850GB free storage space and Photoshop is allowed to use 5GB of RAM. I usually dont have open more than two pictures at once. I use Lightroom 5, and PS CC as an external editor.
Any ideas how to solve this? It does sound like PS is writing alot to the HD sometimes, but it should not get this slow anyway, and the program does not freeze as in software error. I dont need to force quit PS, I just need to wait it out. Very annoying!
Sorry for my bad English! It is not my first language

Tells us a bit more about the work you are doing:
    How many layers?
What types of layers? Shape? Text? etc.
    Document dimensions?
    Bit depth?
    File size on disk?
Also, tell us a little about how things are set up:
    Where is your scratch disk?
How much free space on that disk?
    How much RAM?

  • System Slows Down and Freezes a LOT - Memory?  Swap?  Hard Drive?  AV?

I have a 2.4 GHz 24" dual core iMac (identifier: 7,1). It worked fine for a good while and lately I've been having problems that seem to be getting worse (sometimes it seems to get better, then worse again). I have 4 GB of memory and I'm waiting for more RAM to upgrade it to 6 GB, since I hear that's the max anyone's run successfully in this model.
I've often had a number of programs running at once. Usually I have Firefox, Apple Mail, the KDE's Konsole and Kate (from MacPorts), Calendar, Stickies, MacIago, and Pysol running. (Yes, it helps to have a few games up for breaks when I'm working.) I know that's a lot, but for well over a year, I was working with that setup without problems, without getting stuck for long times with the pinwheel of death or anything like that.
I'm not exactly sure when it started, but now I have times where I will do something and the program will freeze and I get the pinwheel of death. I wait and after 30-60 seconds I can do something, but sometimes I still get hesitations and a start-freeze&stop-go mode for a bit. Sometimes this freezes the whole computer for up to 30-60 seconds and I can't even check another space with Command-Arrow.
I've been trying to backtrack to see if I could figure out what is causing this. Sometimes killing Firefox helps, so I switched to Chrome and watched for usage on Activity Monitor and Chrome uses FAR less CPU time. I have FlashBlock and AdBlocker Plus on Chrome (had it on Firefox, and before that, used NoScript for blocking). But I've seen this happen even without a browser open.
I suspect this could be an issue with swap, since recently I was watching and saw spikes in disk usage around these times, but I'm not sure of the correlation yet. Sometimes it seems like whenever I switch to a different program, whenever I use a new feature, I have to wait (as if it's loading library code or something).
Again, this is a recent issue.
I've upgraded from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6, so I don't know if that could effect this.
I've also started using the free version of Sophos Anti-Virus (which is apparently impossible to quit once it's running) and thought it might be doing scans.
What's also puzzled me is seeing that, with 4 GB of memory, Activity Monitor continually shows 1 GB free, but still indicates 2 GB swap files. So is there a reason 25% of my RAM is not being used?
I've also checked and found my drive to be heavily fragmented. I bought iDefrag, but it can't defrag it because there seem to be some bad blocks. Rather than mark them as bad every time it hits that spot, it just tells me it can't access that part of the drive.
My guess is that OS X, for some reason, leaves a set amount of memory free to use for various reasons and that, due to fragmentation, what was once an easy task of accessing something in a swap file is now time-consuming.
Is that on target? What else could be causing this problem? This is beginning to make my iMac unusable. If it's just swap file issues and defrag problems, I'm thinking of cloning my internal 320 GB drive to a 1 TB drive and replacing the original, then running iDefrag for good measure and continuing from there. (It seems like in OS X finding bad blocks is difficult, from what I've seen.)
What can I do and does anyone have any idea what the problem is? I'll be glad to give more details if that helps, but I've tried to include as much as I can already.
Thanks for any ideas or help.

Considering how I've solved this, I'm pretty much shocked that nobody had any answers for this.
I upgraded my drive from the standard 320 GB drive (which had about 79 GB free on it). I used Carbon Copy Clone to copy my system drive to a 1 TB drive, then swapped out the 320 GB for the 1 TB. When I booted it up and started working, I noticed it was back to the way things used to be: I could go from one program to another to another with NO problem at all. No pinwheels of death and I even added a few more more running programs and still had no issue.
I have no idea why, but before, even when there was a 2 GB swap file, 1 GB (out of 4 GB) of RAM was always unused. I don't know if the OS looks at what it can access and figures read/write times and uses that to figure out how much memory it can effectively handle or what, but now I'm using almost all of my 4 GB of RAM and the swap file is smaller than it was.
So upgrading to a larger drive made a HUGE difference. I'm willing to bet that defragging the old one would have made a difference as well, but there were problems with some files and iDefrag could not read them, which also makes me suspect that drive was on its last legs and close to failure. (That and bad sectors could also have slowed down swap, along with fragmentation issues.)
The solution was a bigger drive, but I suspect defragging the old drive might have helped (if it weren't for possible bad blocks). I know deleting files from the old drive did not help too much.

  • Report Slow Down

We have a report that used to produce a 1000+ page pdf in
about 2 minutes. It has gone to producing a 200+ page report in
about the same amount of time. No change to the data, database,
report or environment, it just suddenly slowed down and nothing
seems to be able to make it go back to decent performance on large
    record sets.
Server reboots don't help, any ideas or thoughts would be
    appreciated.

    Hello
I followed some Donald's suggestion and went through some explanations he's given on its web site to try to figure out how could I speed up the database 10g since we migrated from 8i to 10g.
Here are default values in our 10g influencing the COST BASE OPTIMIZER
    OPTIMIZER_FEATURES_ENABLE=10.2.0.1
    OPTIMIZER_MODE=ALL_ROWS
    OPTIMIZER_INDEX_COST_ADJ=100
I launched his script below provided to see time waited between full scan table
('db file scattered read representing by the c3 row and the
sequential read representing by the c4 row)
    select
    sum(a.time_waited_micro)/sum(a.total_waits)/1000000 c1,
    sum(b.time_waited_micro)/sum(b.total_waits)/1000000 c2,
    sum(a.total_waits) /
    sum(a.total_waits + b.total_waits)
    ) * 100 c3,
    sum(b.total_waits) /
    sum(a.total_waits + b.total_waits)
    ) * 100 c4,
    sum(b.time_waited_micro)/sum(b.total_waits))/
    (sum(a.time_waited_micro)/sum(a.total_waits)
    ) * 100 c5
    from
    dba_hist_system_event a,
    dba_hist_system_event b
    where
    a.snap_id = b.snap_id
    and
a.event_name = 'db file scattered read'
    and
    b.event_name = 'db file sequential read';
there is the output of the script
    C1 C2 C3 C4 C5
    .002438964 .002888595 24.6526611 75.3473389 118.435332
So the time waited for full scan(c3) table is most faster than index sequential read(c4:index probe)
    I changed the parameter OPTIMIZER_INDEX_COST_ADJ and OPTIMIZER_MODE
    alter system set OPTIMIZER_INDEX_COST_ADJ=20 scope=both;
    alter system set OPTIMIZER_MODE=FIRST_ROWS_1000 scope=both;
I lauched aigain the script above, but the output shows the result below
    C1 C2 C3 C4 C5
    .002438964 .002888595 24.6526611 75.3473389 118.435332
this output isn't different than the first one, so does this mean that INDEXES are not well designed or WHAT ELSE?.
Wich parameter could I enable or change to decrease the C4(index sequential read wait time?
    Thank you for your help

  • How do I fix a Safari application that slows down and freezes everything?

Apple called last fall and said my particular Mac had a hard disk problem and they replaced it at the Apple store in late January 2013.  I backed up the information on an external harddrive and used Time Machine before to transfer all the information to the new drive. Everything worked well and I finally put on Mountain Lion at 10.8.4.  I also have Carbonite as a backup and it apparently was not enabled when I transferred the files until early May.  In early May I had not used my iMac for about a month and when I started it I found about 40 named file folders on the Desktop that were empty.  Some of those had named items in them but when I clicked on them they would dissappear.  The actual files did exist and were not effected when I dumped the apparent alias folders. Safari started and would be ok at first but if I went away for an hour it would slow down.  I took it in to the Genius Bar at Apple and they ran some tests and got rid of MacKeeper which they felt was causing the problem.  I got my Mac back home and it still started slow but worked well at first and then started going slow.  If I opened Word it would also start working at a slower speed.  I needed to force quit Safari and the Word progran in order to quit or restart the Mac.  I got an appointment for the next day and they ran all sorts of tests and the hard drive was working normally. They tried tweeking different areas and sent me home again.  When I started working again it did the same thing, I would start out fine and eventually slow down and needed to be force quit to get out of it. A message came up indicating my MasOSX startup disk had no more space available for applications memory.  I took it in a third time and the Genius went to the Activity Monitor and the Safari PID was 221 and %CPU 107, Threads 21 Real Mem 2.73 GB, Virtual Mem 22.00 Kind, Intel (64).  I had no idea what that meant. I went home again and it still ran slow and couldn't run the programs for any length of time before it ran slow and affected the other programs so they would only quit if I used Force quit.  I took it in for the forth time an they decided to keep it overnight. They ran ASD first to rule out memory.  They noticed during the appointment the computer was slow to perform normal tasks such as showing boot options, booting into user, bootingto external user.  If the ASD passed then they would perform erase and install and only restore users and application files from backup drive.  They did this on Wed and Thur. night and I took it home Friday night, June 14 and it still has the same problem. Typing this message right now means typing and waiting for the words to appear.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Does using an external HD slow down iMovie?

I have stored about 6000 photos on my hard drive. I believe it may be slowing down my computer, so I have thought about buying a separate drive just for iPhoto and iMovie. Would that be a good idea? If so, would I expect the program to run more slowly when working from this external drive? It was suggested to me that I buy the NewerTech ministack V2. That drive is available in a number of sizes. Should I select 320, 400, or 500GB, if I buy that one? Do you have other suggestions? Thanks for any advice you can offer. I am not a techie, I just like to make movies. Miriam

It seems that you're sensibly thinking ahead, and preparing for any trouble!
The external disc(s) wouldn't normally be backed up to .Mac, but if you copy your iPhoto Library and Movies to another destination - as well as to the disc you'll normally keep them on - then you should be well covered.
Your Mercury On the Go drive is probably quite small (60GB or 80GB), so why not use that for your iPhoto Library?
I've got 11,000 photos in my Library, and it uses up 33GB. So you could easily fit your 6,000 photos on your On The Go drive. Moving your iPhoto Library onto that external disc would clear, say, 16GB or so from your internal disc; enough for another hour's worth of DV video editing.
Then you could use a larger capacity external FireWire disc for backups - instead of the On The Go ..and backups would probably run faster - and you could also edit movies on that fast disc, as long as you kept a backup of them on another disc!
Editing movies which are on an external fast FireWire disc generally allows things to run faster, as the internal disc can simultaneously do its own 'housekeeping' duties, or swapping things in and out of memory, or reading bits of program from the internal disc ..while all video data transfers happen exclusively on the external disc.
That's the way professionals edit: always keeping video files on a fast external - or second internal - disc.
The only problem which comes to mind is that some Canon camcorders don't like to be on the FireWire circuit along with any other FW device, such as a separate external disc. If you do have a Canon camcorder, you may need to import to your Mac's internal disc first, then disconnect the Canon camcorder and then copy that imported video to your external disc for editing.
But it's late here, and I gotta go to bed ..bye for now!

  • DVD Drive not recognized in secondary IDE slot

PLease help.  I removed my DVD player from the primary IDE slot and plugged into the secondary IDE slot and now it is not recognized by either the BIOS or XP.  I installed a new ATA hard drive into the primary IDE slot.  The ATA drive is recognized and works fine.
    Please help!!!

    For 865PE/875 boards using WinXP
    Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config.>>
    Native Mode
SATA Only (can also try PATA only here if required)
    Keep PATA enabled - Yes
    Both Channels
SATA as Raid - NO unless you are using Raid
Legacy mode is for old OS's that only support 2 IDE channels
1 channel reserved for IDE, other for SATA1&2 to share. Remaining IDE channel disabled
Native Mode is for newer OS's and supported by XP.
Both IDE channels enabled, both SATA channels enabled.
