Secondary monitor fullscreen apps often have gray bar on top

I have noticed that frequently, for all apps, if I fullscreen an app on a non-primary monitor it frequently has a grey bar at the top where the menu bar would be were it not fullscreen. I have only noticed this on 10.9, since I didn't use fullscreen apps with multiple monitors before, so I'm not sure if it was introduced with 10.9. Has anyone else had this issue or have any ideas as to how to fix it?
I use a Dell 27" (2560x1440) monitor as my primary monitor on the left., connected via mini displayport. On the right I have my 15" rmbp (2012). The problem happens when I fullscreen apps on the rmbp screen. Here are some screenshots:

I see this too. Mainly with iTunes. Bit of a pain, but I haven't been able to find any way of fixing it. You can set your system to share desktops ("spaces" in Apple's parlance) as suggested here, but then you're back to Lion-style handing of multiple monitors. Taking the app out of and then back into fullscreen seems to temporaily fix the issue too, so I guess that's our workaround for now.

Did a reset to fix my problem with Firefox but now I have no bar on top with file, bookmarks, tools etc. Firefox created an old Firefox data folder on my desktop. Not computer savvy...how can I fix this problem?

hello Elainef, if you are missing toolbar buttons you can go into firefox customization mode and place them where you'd like to have them. in there it's also possible to enable/disable toolbars like the menu bar:

  • GB chooses to open on secondary monitor, not the primary monitor?  It was working fine, then started this.

New Mac Mini running new Garageband.  2 monitors.  Working fine, however, all of a sudden GB started to choose to open and not be able to move from secondary monitor.  What may have changed and how can I rectify this.  I would like GB to open on the primary.  All of applications open on primary monitor.

There is some confusing information in your post.  You say iMac g5 & 10.6.6.  The iMac g5 cannot run 10.6.6.  10.6.6 requires an intel machine.
    I'll assume iMac g5.
There have been many reports of capacitor problems with these machines.  There are capacitor replacement kits if you want to experiment with a soldering iron.
You could try a new battery.
Since you are having succes running the machine, I'd say it is a hardware problem. I've read a little on the capacitor problem.  Seems to fit what I have heard.
    google: g5 capacitor replacement kit
    Seems rather inexpensive.

  • Lightroom 4.1 RC2 - Secondary monitor issue

    Hi
lightroom 4.1 rc2 seems to have solved the crash issue when using a secondary monitor.
NOW i have another HUGE and HEAVY problem...
The image that appears in the secondary monitor have total different colors than the reality... and when switching the configuration ( so main window go into secondary monitor ) colors are fine ( so this isn't a bad configuration between monitor and lightroom.... ).
Images in secondary monitor appears less contrasted and greenish. And that's a big issue ( cause i use secondary monitor for the correct balancement for printing ).
I repeat that the main window of lightroom shows the image correctly when working with secondary monitor as main...

    Known bug.

  • Gray bars on fillable forms?

I am frequently emailed lineage forms to fill out, print and mail back to the senders. However, the last two Adobe Acrobat forms I've received have gray bars highlighting the line to be filled in with text. I fill it in but the gray bar remains. It even prints my forms with the gray bar still there even though it doesn't even match the space of my text.
What gives? How can I get rid of those gray bars so that my form is neat, filled out, and printed?
    Thanks,
    MiddleGeorgiaGenie

That is hard to say without seeing the forms. There are many properties for a form filed that include filing the field with color, showing various borders, highlighting required fields.
Are the forms coming from the same source?
Does this happen to all forms?

  • How to send the canvas window to a secondary monitor ?

    Hi there,
I already hooked up a secondary monitor.
How do I send the canvas window to a secondary monitor ?
    Thanks

Once you have your extenal display connected, you need to go into System Preferences > Displays and turn off mirror displays mode.  This puts your external display in extended desktop mode.  Then you can drag the canvas window from your primary display to your external display.
Note: in my experience if you normally have the Dock on the right side of the screen it will disappear when you do this.  Just do  > Dock and select one of the other Dock positions.

  • My updated version of iMovie doesn't work. It opens, shows iMovie window but completely white, just with the grey bar on top which doesn't respond to actions.

    Greetings,
Thanks to all in advance for your time and help.
My iMovies doesn't seem to work; when I open it, it appears the normal iMovie window but white, all white, nothing can be seen except for the gray bar on top with the signs Import/Create ecc. All the options available on the gray bar on top of the window don't work, the input doesn't go through. All the options on the top TOP barr (where the battery, time, day, airport is shown) are all grayed out. I can't do anything.
How can it get worst? It can: now after opening iMovie and trying to do something, without succeeding, I cant even quit the program, not even with force quit. I have to keep the general ON/OFF computer button pressed until everything shuts down. (and this is bad for the computer too). When I turn the computer on again it says: "you turned off the computer because of a problem", I ignore and access my data normally.
Thank you again for your time.
Hope to hear from someone soon.
    Regards
    Matt

Try backing up to iTunes and restoring from backup
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
Note the the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not include any synced media like apps or music.

  • JScrollPane, I need scrol bars on top and left

    Hi,
Is there an easy way to move the scrollbars in a scroll pane so that
they are on the top and left. Every thing I can find shows them on the right and bottom and nothing explans how to get them left and top.
I tried the setComponentOrientation but that does not seem to do
    anything.
    Thanks in advance,
    Pat

The JScrollPane was designed to have scroll bar on right and bottom.
You could add JScrollbar components on top and left of JScrollPane.
But you cannot add other no scroll bar component to right and bottom!
There are many ways to have scroll bar on top and left.
One way is, not use JScrollPane, write your own JPanel, and
has BorderLayout then put scroll bar on left and top.
The other way is create your own JScrollPane, change the default
layout manager use by JScrollPane, the ScrollPaneLayout.
Create your own Layout manager to have the behaviour you like.
Anyway, there are not esay way to just swap the scroll bar.

  • I have just upgraded. AND now I can't view video fullscreen on my secondary monitor?!! Why!

    I have a dual monitor set-up, with sharing. I am on a Mac OS X Version 10.7.5
I am viewing my Firefox window on my secondary monitor. (NOT Primary) When I click any video to full-screen it loads the full-screen on my primary monitor. When I click the window to full-screen (on my secondary monitor) it fills the primary monitor.
Before I upgraded, this morning, I could click the full-screen button and my video would appear on the secondary monitor. (The same monitor.) Before this morning, I could re-size the browser window to full-size and view it in my secondary monitor. (The same monitor!)
So, explain to me, why the change? Why is it when I click on a video to enter full-screen, or want to re-size a window to full-screen on my secondary monitor, it views on my primary monitor. Does this make any sense?
Why? Why would somebody want to browse on one monitor, want to watch something fullscreen, click a button and then watch it on another monitor? I just don't get it. Or why would someone be browsing in a window on one monitor, click full-screen, and want to browse in the same window on another monitor?
I am sitting here facing my secondary monitor (which I use as my art-board) and my primary monitor sits to my left. I mainly work from my secondary monitor, so when I am drawing, painting and designing my cursor doesn't 'run into' my dock features, calendar, ext. When browsing in Firefox my window is where it should be, in-front of me. So why would I want to watch a video or browse the web on my left? Why? Why would any developer or designer do this! Especially considering the second, non viewing screen is black! Which means my secondary monitor (in-front of me) is black.
When I click, view full-screen, whether video or resizing windows, whether it is my primary or secondary monitor, don't you think the screen should appear full-screen in the monitor I am using?! Right?! I mean somehow you calculated a way for Firefox to recognize which monitor to reopen in. So what's up? I didn't have this problem last week? So tell me . . . why can't I open a video in full-screen on my secondary monitor like I have been doing for years? Why am I even having to write a complaint about something I used to be able to do. AND NOW I CAN'T.
I just checked Safari. Wow. Look at that! When I want to view a video in full-screen in the appropriate monitor I can! Wow! I can actually click on my secondary monitor and it's recognizes I want to watch the video on the same monitor.
I used to be able to do this in Firefox. I guess it is time to give up on Firefox. And choose a company who understands user-perspective. Or at-least understands what an upgrade is.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Double gray bars you have to drag down in order to read email content

Anyone ever see this? Sometimes when I open an email it looks like there is nothing in it.  At first, I'd just delete the email thinking the sender forgot to send something.  But then I discovered that those specific emails had a little double gray bar at the top.  I touched the bar and dragged it and it opened the "content" area of the email.  This doesn't happen often, so I can't place my finger on what TYPES of emails it may be happening in, like maybe forwarded ones, or ones that are too long? I don't know.  It's just kind of weird.  I googled it, but there is nothing.
Has anyone ever experienced that?  An email where all you can see is the heading, and the signature, but the actual content is all squished together.  You then have to drag the double gray bar in order to see and read the content.
    Thanks

Yes, you need to publish as public to test social sharing. If you don't want to publish folios as public because the app is already in the store, you might want to set up a different application account for testing purposes. You can share/copy the folios from one account to the other and publish as public. Create or edit an app that points to that account.

  • Using fullscreen on my first monitor makes the other one gray

So when I go into fullscreen on my first monitor, the other one becomes gray (like the Mac OS X login screen, almost like this: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/183/2/e/linen_desktop_shaded_by_tbg10101- d3ksrb5.png).
It happens when i click the http://gyazo.com/e9d8ec2ecff4828a8465368de564ebcb small 2 arrows button on the top right of the window, and it also happens when I open some fullscreen programs. The only things this doesn't happen on and I still can click on stuff and do stuff on the other screen is League of Legends, fullscreen on  Video players in Google Chrome and Safari (like youtube.com, twitch.tv etc)... ( By the way when i go into fullscreen on youtube or twitch in Safari and i click on my second motor the Dock and a white list on the top comes up on the full screened monitor (the one with Safari), this is very annoying and should eb fixed.)
How can i fix this problem with the gray screen on second monitor tho? This problem kinda ruins the purpose why you should have a second monitor...
    Thanks for the help

    Hello Kladdy
Check the settings In System Preferences to make sure that Displays have separate Spaces and that should make it to where when you go full screen, it will not be a blank window.

  • Why those gray bars in the waveform monitor ?

    Hi,
On previous FCP, the gray bars in the Waveform monitor were visible only when using the Sequence's RGB render settings.
Now, with FCP 5.1.4, if i place, say, a layer with composite mode, the gray bars show even if i work in a "High quality YUV" setting.
    Just curious...why that change ?
    thanks

I don't know what gray bars you're talking about. If it's the graticule (thin horizontal lines at regular intervals), they're an essential part of a waveform display. Without them you'd have a hard time doing precise calibrations.
I can only assume that if they were gone before and there now for you, somebody fixed a problem. Or you had them turned off before.
If you're talking about some other kind of grey bars, then you'll have to explain what they are.

  • Hey iphone an iphone 3g and i only have about 13 apps and the yellow bar on itunes for my phone is way to big i deleted all my photos all my music every thing i ryed restoring ans all it still takes up space for sum reason ?? please someone help me

hey iphone an iphone 3g and i only have about 13 apps and the yellow bar on itunes for my phone is way to big i deleted all my photos all my music every thing i ryed restoring ans all it still takes up space for sum reason ?? please someone help me

If Other (the yellow bar) is too big something is corrupted.  The only solution (that I know of) is to restore from your most recent backup using iTunes (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).

  • Detect displays seems to have quit working? The secondary monitor is bleeding into the MacBook Pro monitor. How can I fix this?

I am using a MacBook Pro 2009, Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8). All of a sudden last night after a long day of work, my monitor resolution changed without warning and the secondary monitor display started bleeding into my laptop monitor. When I go to detect displays, it doesn't fix the problem. It looks like I need to switch to a larger display setting and the largest setting has disappeared.(The display seems to default to this setting where my screen bleeds into the laptop monitor.) When this started happening last night, I immediately shutdown and restarted to see if this would fix the problem. So far, it's still not looking too good.
I also tried shutting the laptop and using the external monitor only. When I do this, the monitor freaks out and keeps flashing on long enough for me to input a password. Then it flashes off, the computer and dipslay goes to sleep and I have to re enter my password to exit sleep mode and the process starts all over again.
Here are screen shots of the two monitors side by side:
    http://danisco.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/monitors.png
(Notice the weird overlap - it's not keeping me from working, but it's super annoying!)
Any ideas on how I can try and fix this? OR do I need to get help from Apple directly. Thank you in advance for any suggestions on this!

Okay - this issue seems to have resolved on it's own. Yea!
I did find a thread that suggested resetting the PRAM/NVRAM so I did this, restored the external monitor to factory settings and went into Disk Utility and repaired disk permissions and verified disk permissions.
Here is a link to reset the PRAM/NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
These things may have helped resolve this issue. I can't tell what worked because it was hours after I did all these things that my monitor and computer decided they liked each other again. If you have a similar issue, maybe these steps will help you resolve your problem too.
    Hope this is helpful!
