Secondary Socket Fried by Power Surge/Cut?

Hope someone may be able to help me on this one. Wednesday night had a power surge/short power cut here and discovered my second socket was dead. Thought this would fix itself but have found today that the socket is still dead.
Wouldn't normally be bothered but my Sky box is wired into this socket and obviously this is soon going to cause me problems as it's part of my contract to have the box connected to a telephone line (don't use the socket for anything other than Sky and an old telephone for contacting the electric board when we have power cuts - have at least one a month here - oh the irony!).
Could this power surge (lights brightened and flickered before the power cut) have caused the damage to the socket? Has anyone had this problem before and been able to get the electric board to cough up if the surge is what has caused this damage?
Would appreciate any help as am sure Sky will be contacting me soon to query the missing telephone line connection.
Many thanks to the guys out there!

I thought this was supposed to be a forum for people helping each other out with valid and useful advice - not being facetious and puerile. I can only wish on you the electrical outcomes I have had to suffer in the past here - I have claimed against the electrical board in the past but was hoping for sensible advice on this particular occasion. My experience with the electricity board in the past has been less than helpful if not down right evasive and lengthy. I was hoping to get advice from someone who has been in this position before so that I can make a decision based on fact not speculation!
If you have nothing useful to say, don't say it! Your tag says no to nuisance calls - suggest you try to stop being one yourself!!

Actually I thought it was good advice, Put In a Claim, it wont cost you anything.
As regards my as you say TAG, it's not its a sig, and may I say you should also stop being your SIG as well.
Just added you to my Block list, no point in trying to help you.
bye bye.

  • Power surge fried inputs on 55" LG LCD TV

TV was bought from BB, but out of warranty (no extended).  It's about 2 years old.  The TV turns on, but none of the inputs work.  A surge went through my PC hooked up to the TV via HDMI...literally fried the HDMI cable into the port to where I almost couldn't remove it.
What are my options?  Are these input boards cheap enough to where repair is viable or am I better off just getting a new TV?

I doubt anyone would buy parts from a TV that has been affected by a power surge.
Bet the cost of a surge protector doesn't seem so bad now?
Sorry your TV got burnt.  Buy a surge prottector for the next one, and don't buy the cheapest surge protector you can find...

My desktop fried in a power surge--- I bought a new one---I cannot register my CS2 even though I have the activation code

    Awesome! You're welcome!
Well, I'm not exactly sure. I suppose they may know if you have or have not purchased it since you are probably signed in...Or they figure it's an old enough program, and few enough people know about the serial number, that they don't care too much.

  • Power Surge Fried It- Can I save my files?

My iBook was fried by a power surge yesterday. Wont turn on.
I was wondering if its still possible to save my files if I take it somewhere?? Or even to get the computer running again. I mostly just want my files as I was planning on buying an iMac soon anyways.
    Thanks!

Oh, bad luck! If the iBook won't turn on I doubt that anything can be done re saving the computer. Wait for a few more replies before taking that as gospel though...
In the meantime you can try a PMU reset:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook
What you can do is to remove the HD and put it into an external enclosure. Once you have your new iMac you can connect the two and transfer what files you want.
For instructions on removing the HD select your model Here then Hard Drive on the next page.
If you're planning to sell the remains as a 'spares or repair', perhaps on eBay, you need to be fairly careful and put it all back together again. Otherwise you can be as destructive as you like until you get to the HD.

  • Use of WRT54G after Power Surge

I was very satisfied with my WRT54G v2 until I went on vacation and came back.  While on vacation a power surge or lightning struck and wiped out a bunch of things from my garage door opener to office:  cable modem (no ethernet port), router (no internet port), old BEFSR41 used as a switch (power supply dead).
After puttering for awhile, the WRT54G has some limited lifesigns.
    -- wireless access works fine
    -- switch ports work fine
-- Internet port does not work
    Question:
-- Is this something that is serviceable?
-- Can it be converted into an access point or something?
Are old power supplys available for BEFSR41?  or is it just junk now (even with supply, it could be fried)
A few thoughts would be worthwhile

You can still use the router like a wireless switch. It can be either connected straight to a modem for a single wireless computer or be connected to an existing network that has a router.
All you have to do is connect this router to the modem on any of it's switch ports and same thing if it'll be connected to a switch or a router.

  • Power surge now nothing but issues.

So I had a power surge (no protector...I know dumb) and my pc restarted.  When it came back on it loads the bios.  If I leave the bios, it beeps once long and then 2 short and goes to black screen.  Everything I read says that it means my video card is shot.   Here is what I am running:
    MSI     FM2-A75MA-P33
    AMD    A10 680K
So having said that I am running integrated graphics.  Does this mean my processor is shot or did I fry something on the mobo?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

ok it is sounding like the surge maybe has killed the CPU or fried its memory controller!
one lastage thing to try is a CMOS clear >>Clear CMOS Guide<< remove the power cord and do a clear and leave the battery out for 5 mins and put it back in and see if it works then!

  • Power Surge ruined external drive

    Wonder if anyone can help?
Am operating a Mac Pro at work and recently a power surge caused one of my WD books to corrupt... it's currently in the lab being worked on but needless to say that it was a bit of a nightmare and has prompted the purchase of a G RAID pronto.
Just wondering what could have caused the power surge? I'm running two Cinema HD monitors, one of which is using a higher power adaptor than was supplied. The last adaptor failed and the monitor would not operate with another of the same power... MAc Forums suggested that a higher power adaptor was the solution and it worked.
However, could this be the cause of the power surge? Just keen to prevent another drive being wiped out in the same way...

    Hi CD,
Sorry to hear about your corrupted WD book.
I use Belkin SurgeMaster Surge Protectors to protect all my computer and TV/audio visual equipment:
    http://www.belkin.com/uk/powersolutions/
My Mac Pro based computer system, which is used solely for my personal use (including photo editing, digital imaging and colour printing up to A2 size), and which is insured for £13,000.00+ on my home contents insurance policy, is protected by a Belkin SurgeMaster with a Connected Equipment Warranty up to £75,000.00:
    http://www.belkin.com/uk/powersolutions/warranties/
I know that the Belkin SurgeMaster does not give the protection of a UPS for work in process, but I do not need that because Time Machine does hourly back-ups, which is adequate for my usage.
My hi-fi set-up is the only system which is not protected by a Belkin SurgeMaster. Instead, that is protected by an Isotek Orion mains filter, designed specifically for audio systems:
    http://www.isoteksystems.com/cgi-bin/products.pl?id=13
As you are using a Mac Pro for work, perhaps you need a UPS to protect work in process against power cuts, but your ancillary equipment could be protected by Belkin SurgeMaster(s) at a fraction of the cost of a UPS.
    Just a thought!
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Has there been trouble with the charger.  I am getting to re-order but the one i had the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?

Has there been any trouble with the charger?  I am getting ready to re-order but the one i had.... the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?  Thanks.

Can you also see blackening in the power jack on the PowerBook? If so, I would be worried that the surge also damaged the computer/
Does the computer run OK on just the battery? If it is working on battery power, that limits the number of things inside the computer that could have been fried.
If the computer is severely damaged by the surge, it's not worth repairing. However, a couple of posters in Apple forums said their homeowners'/renters' insurance paid them replacement value of their computer after power surge damage due to known problems on the grid, like the huge power outage that hit the SW Untied Stats and part of Mexico yesterday.

  • I'm wondering about the effects of power surges on a MacBook

I'm getting a new camp, and I want to bring my laptop to it. Unfortunately it probably has power surges on a regular basis, and I would like to know if that will affect it.

Power surges aren't good for any computer. You should make sure you've plugged it in to a good surge suppressor. It would probably be wise to have a spare power cable as well, as the only part I've ever lost in the power system of any Mac laptop has been the power cable... I've had a couple of the bricks on the ends get fried, but was lucky enough that the computer was just fine.

  • Can my ipod be revived after a power surge?

Can my ipod be revived after a power surge?

The power surge was into the iPod through the outlet where it was plugged in with a power cord.  I tried the steps mentioned and none seem to work.  When I plug the iPod into the computer via the USB cord...the iPod gets very warm in one of the lower corners but doesn't power up or allow me to recover it.  I'm guessing it's fried.  Thanks anyway for the assistance.

  • Power Surge = No STB power

We have Verizon Fios TV and i have a Motorola 7216 Hi-Def DVR in my bedroom. It has worked flawlessly up until today when we had a power surge in our house. The power only blinked for a second and that was it. Everything in the house works just fine except for my DVR STB.
There is no power to the box. It is plugged into a surge protector along with my TV and Xbox 360, both of which are working fine. But for some reason the power won't turn on on the box. I've tried unplugging for 15sec and plugging back in, tried unplugging from the surge protector for 15sec and plugging back in. I've even tried both of those methods but for 2-3min and still nothing.
I tried using the Verizon Home Agent program to reset the STB but still nothing. Like I said, everything else works fine except for my STB. Any ideas? Or should I just call Verizon and have them come look at it?
I'm worried that the box fried itself with the power surge, when I do hit the power button I can hear a VERY faint sound from the box. But I have to be right next to the box and pushing power from there to hear it.

This would seem rather simple to resolve ... without complicating things by trying to tell the tech support people the story starting with the power surge and all the troubleshooting stuff you did, simply call Verizon and tell them that the box won't power on.   They'll probably do some basic troubleshooting with you which you should patiently oblige and then decide to send you a new box.

  • Power surge killed ipod?

Well, I have a 30GB iPod classic, worked fine every since a friend gave it to me, battery was getting a bit old, but it worked fine. Well one day I plugged it into my dads computer and a little pop up told me there was a power surge in the USB port, and ever since then, It wont turn on. I plug it into the wall or my computer or anywhere and it wont turn on. I've tried resetting it with the Menu and Select button. I don't know what to do, is it dead, or fixable? I had a lot of stuff stored on there. Thanks in advance.

Did you use the iPod in an unsupported docking system say for a hifi ? If so, you may find that the connecting socket on your iPod is a little slack. Try holding your usb cable on to the iPod with a couple of elastic bands before you plug it into your computer. With iTunes up and running and your iPod connected this way, toggle the hold switch and restart your iPod - does it register now?

  • Power Surge Nuked Fax part of multi-function printer

    HP 1319f MFP with fax.
The Fax was working well until a Power Surge on the DSL/Fax line fried a relay outside and now the fax does not work. The line has no dial tone when the Printer/fax is connected, but the fax does try to dial out: "No response" it says, then the phone line is dead.
HP says the warranty does not cover this. Can I just replace a motherboard or something easy like that or do I need to take it to an HP authorized repair shop???

  • Power surge/ now everythings dark

last week I had a power surge late at night, in the am the computer was off, it won't turn on. I press the power button and the light comes on the button, but when i release it everything goes dark again......pls help, is it a powere supply issue or did it just get fried?

    Hi, benny -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
... is it a powere supply issue or did it just get fried?
There's plenty of time to experience the worst; no sense in looking for it.
Based on the symptoms you describe, resetting the PMU may well take care of the problem. This Apple KBase article provides info on doing that -
    Article #95037 - G4 (AGP) - Resetting PMU
Although that article is written around a G4 (AGP) model, it applies to all G4s except the G4 (PCI) model. The location of the PMU button will vary on different models; it's usually near the battery.
If your G4 happens to be a G4 (PCI) model, then these articles apply -
    Article #95065 - G4 (PCI) - Resetting Cuda
Article #95066 - G4 (PCI) - Resetting the Logic Board
It is possible, too, that the internal battery may need replacing. You can get a replacement at places like Radio Shack for about $US 15.

  • Power surge Ipod

So about a year ago my Ipod had some sort of powe surge. I plogged it into an outlet and the whole thing lit up and then died. I could not reset it or get it to turn on at any cost, I ended up sending it in to be fixed. Now a year later it has done the same thing. I am just wondering if anyone knows what the problem is, do I have a faulty Ipod. I have the old 10gig one, with a touch wheel and all that. I got it 2 years ago. Let me know if I can fix it any other way then to send it back again. Thanks
