Secret for using Cross Dissolve transitions

Based on my limited experience, the most useful transition is the cross dissolve. It is pretty much the only one I use since it is doesn't draw attention to itself and bears repeated deployment for smooth scene changes. But it has a problem: If you simply make a clip split and put the transition in, it won't work. And it appears even high level people at Apple technical support don't understand what is going on. Based on the apparently incorrect background information they gave me, I have always been extremely careful about making the split precisely where the scene changes and then chopping off a small number of frames in order to make the transition work. But recently I discovered that cross dissolve transitions will always work (regardless of whether the frames on both sides of the cut are similar or even identical) if you delete precisely one frame, and it can be from either side of the split. When you do that the edges of the clip go from squared (right angles) to rounded. The cross dissolve transitions will never work between two clips that have squared edges. They will always work when the edges are rounded. And all it takes to get the edges to be rounded is the deletion one frame. The edges get rounded and cross dissolve transitions work and if you remove more than one frame, and/or do if from both sides of the split. The point is that it will work with as little as one frame. But if you don't sacrifice at least one frame, cross dissolve transitions will never work.
Of course, I am assuming that my experience with iMovie '09 and '11 is not idiosyncratic. Also: I would be interested in knowing if anybody else knew this "secret"--and whether it is widespread knowledge or in any of the books on iMovie.

When one splits clips, don't split close to what will be the beginning or the end of a shot. That's why you should always start the camera BEFORE the action begins and run AFTER the action ends. It only needs to be a 1/2 second to 1 second. Now before you add a cut or a transition you will automatically trim the end and the beginning of the two clips.
I start with a two-hour clip that includes hundreds of scenes, some ending abruptly, some not. If scene one suddenly ends and scene two begins, the natural place to make the cut is where the scene changes. If it happens that there is stuff immediately on each side of the cut that is of value, you would might prefer not to lose even one frame. Usually on one of the two sides the loss of one frame is not so bad. And if you sacrifice that frame you have almost everything you want. But it turns out that the situation is better than that. Since you can also add frames (I now realize), you can end without losing any frames at all. Of course, if you happen to be in a situation where there is plenty of useless stuff on both sides of a cut, the problem the solution is trying to solve does not come up. But I wouldn't change my filming habits just to avoid this problem of adding cross dissolves, since once you know what to handle it, it's not much of a problem. As to whether it is good practice to aim to have extra footage on both sides of a shot, sure. That seems like a good rule of thumb to me. But there are many situations where you don't have that opportunity. Say you were filming John Kennedy in Dallas or life among the Taliban or your kid falling off a horse. Life may not give you the chance to put useless footage at the end or beginning of your shot. In my case, I have hours of amateur home movies that stop at all sorts of odd places. I can't go back and reshoot it.
I suspect Apple simply expected you to do this. This will inherently eliminate what may be a tiny bug that you overcome by trimming 1 frame.
Most transition types don't require the removal or addition of a frame. When I called Apple technical support about this, the person I talked to was surprised by this feature too. And he found it happening with at least one other transition, I think. He handed me over to a specialist. That specialist gave me a complicated theory for why this was happening. He said that the frames on both sides of the cut had to look fairly different for the transition to work. And sometimes when we think we have made the cut exactly where the scene changes, we haven't in fact. So we need to cut away until both sides are definitely different. And you will notice that often the thumbnail for one side will be an image from the other side. This lead me to think that I was required to make sure that on either side of the cut there was definitely a significant change of image. But all you have to do is get the edges of the clip to become rounded. And you can do this by adding or subtracting a frame at any location. Of course, if you are going to be chopping off multiple frames for any reason, you will also solve or avoid this problem. So, if Apple was thinking what you suggest, they haven't given any guidance about it in print. And the tech support people don't seem to know it.

  • Very strange - using cross dissolve transition between a series of stills

New to FCP - been using FCE for a couple of years now.
I have a bunch of stills that I animate aka the Ken Burns effect. After I add keyframes at beginning and the end of the clip, I then add a transition (I use transitions on almost every picture). For some strange reason, when I use a cross dissolve and render it, the picture shakes a bit when I play it. It's not the screen that shakes, it's just the picture in the canvas and it only shakes when the transition plays. After the transition, the picture plays just fine. Very strange. Never happened in FCE and only happens with cross dissolve.
    Any ideas? thanks.

When I render the picture and transition, I hit Option R which renders everything - doesn't take too long because I render after each change. Not moving keyframes out which actually creates another problem that the movement doesn't start immediately but that's not what I'm talking about here.
I've been doing this awhile and it's never seen this before. Using a new scanner (Canon) and just bought Adobe CS3 Design that I use to edit the pix but can't believe either of those would be a problem. Has anyone heard of a problem with FCP after installing an Adobe product?
    Thanks for the suggestions anyway

  • FCP won't add cross dissolve transition to clips

After putting two Quicktime clips into FCP, I attempted to add a cross dissolve transition in between the two clips. When I dragged the cross dissolve transition to the two clips, nothing happened. That transition had been used before, and as far as I can tell, nothing was different this time than all the previous times. For some odd reason, FCP refuses to add the transition to those clips.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on what could have happened? More importantly, is there a way to work around this problem?
    Thanks!

This is a problem when you do not edit down your raw clips and drop them into the timeline as they have been captured.
    The operative concept is 'handles'.
For transitions to work, you need enough unused footage AFTER the OUT point of first (outgoing) clip and BEFORE the IN point of the second (incoming) clip.
Drop the first clip into the Viewer and set an OUT point 30 frames or so from the end of the clip. Drop the second clip into the Viewer and set the IN point 30 frames or so past the beginning of the clip.
Now try to place your transition.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Issue- Cross Dissolve Transition creates random frame insert

    Hello,
I have had this issue for a long time, and whenever I render a cross dissolve transition, once in a while, it inserts a random frame from either the prior or latter clips that I apply the transition effect to.
I don't know how to solve this issue and could use help as soon as possible.
    Thank you,
    Th3On3Fr33man

    I agree with Harm.
This happens when one does not have enough Frames (Handles), beyond the Out-Point, or before the In-Point, to accommodate the Duration of the Transition.
For some more info on Handles, these might be useful:
In the days of A-B Roll editing, or with film, Handles were an easy concept to grasp. With current NLE's, it's more abstract.
Good luck, and do not forget to read through the Help files. In the days of manuals, this concept was covered pretty well. Curt Wrigley covers it in his Classroom in a Book PrPro.

I have cross dissolve transitions set between images and videos, and I have the pan/zoom hold setting at "0." Despite the "0" setting, my images are static until the cross dissolve is complete. I want the pan/zoom feature to start the moment the subsequent image becomes visible. Is there a solution?

    tonyproam
I am not sure if I am zeroing in on what you seek so please clarify...on
I want the pan/zoom feature to start the moment the subsequent image becomes visible.
Do you mean fading in visible versus or completely visible at the end of the transition? Whatever the case, I have not
found a scenario to fit what you are describing.
However, here are my suggestions for you to consider...
    1. What is the alignment of the Cross Dissolve transition - Left Clip, Between Clips, or Right Clip. If Between Clips, please try Left Clip alignment.
    2. What is the duration of the Cross Dissolve transition - you could try varying the transition duration. If less than 1 second, then please read the
details for minimum transition duration in the following
    http://atr935.blogspot.com/2014/03/pe-minimum-duration-for-transition.html
Please let me know if any of the above worked for you in what you were seeking regarding pan and zoom effect and video transitions.
    Thank you.

  • Automating Cross Dissolve Transitions

I am working on a slide show movie in Final Cut Express from over 150 still images. Is there a way to automate adding a Cross Dissolve transition between each of the stills?
Any help on the issue would be appreciated.

I'm feeling I might be in trouble. I am using FCE (Express) which does not alow one to change default transition. I work extensively with still images, animating. I need to be able to apply a particular cross dissolve length to a group of stills. This varies according to the effect I want. My work does not stick to a fixed frame rate.

  • Cross dissolve transition between multiple video tracks?

I'm wanting to cross dissolve between 2 clips, with each clip consisting of 2 or 3 video tracks (one clip is a still image in track v2, sitting above a color matte in v1; the other clip is motion footage in v1, with another cropped motion image in v2 and v3). When I put cross dissolves between the 2 clips (ie 2 dissolves, one for video track v1 and one for v2), the dissolve is "messy", showing the cropped images in v2 and v3.
To make the dissolves "clean" I can render and export the multiple-track clips, but then I have to add handles to allow the dissolve, and then it takes time to resync each clip, which is very annoying!
Is there a technique for making cross dissolves between multiple-track video clips?

    Any other suggestions? <</div>
    Practice and logical deconstruction.
If your original clip is 10 seconds and your nest is 10 seconds you must trim off 2 seconds of the nest to perform a 2-4 second dissolve. If that pulls too much of your original clip out of the timeline, you must add two seconds to the original clip so the nest is 12 seconds long so you can trim off the 2 seconds requried to perform the dissolve.
An easier way of accomplishing this is to stack the two nests and apply a keyframed opacity ramp to the upper track. This will help you visualize what you're doing wrong and how to add more handles to the upstream clips.

  • Problem with audio overlap for cross dissolve transition

I am using FCPX v10.8 to edit 1hour long lectures.  When I edit out a short mis-speak, for example, the audio will overlap too, along with the video.  Not good.
Someone told me to try expanding the audio video and that definately helps.  But when I do additional edits, the audio tracks  keep changing to different levels (FCP7 tracks which i wish we still had) and I start running into overlap problems again so I have to keep going back and making sure I havent messed up some of the earlier ones.  Driving me nuts.  Is there any other way to edit or some other transition that will do the same as cross dissolve for the video but not audio.  There are not too many transitions that will work for one person speaking as in a lecture.  Cant fade in and out, etc.  Appreciate any help.  Urgent!  have deadlines to meet.
    thank you
    Jac

Expanding audio/video is the first step. The second step in to bring up the trim tool (T). Then you roll the audio and/or the video. The levels should be easily controlled as well with keyframes.
Other than dissolve, the video transition of choice is fade to color.

  • Cross Dissolve transition does not work after cutting the tails of both ends.

I used to apply the Cross Dissolve video transition a while ago and never had any problems. My Cross Dissolve is not working for whatever reason. I usually split parts of the movie using the razor tool and cut the tail of both parts I just split, than apply the Cross Dissolve, but it does not work at all. I dont know if I am doing something wrong here, I need your help if you can help me with that. I have also tried to apply Film Dissolve but I have the same problem.
    Thank you very much!!
    Renata

I am trying to put together a recruiting video. I was out recording a bunch of people talking about the organization, when I am working with something like this I usually try to shorten the 3 or 5 minute clip I have from one person and just connect the parts of the clip that need to be on the screen, that requires several cuts during the clip and merge the good parts together using the cross dissolve. It is very simple and I have done several times, but for whatever reason during certain parts of the clip when applied will not work. The clips are usually 1 to 3 minutes long and I need to extract the good parts making no more than 1 minute for each peson talking.
    Thanks!

  • Issue using cross dissolve in my 'top row' edit

Hi, in the opening of my video I have an opaque map with footage of a swimming pool behind.
To create this, I have used the swimming pool footage on my bottom row of the timeline and the map (a still image) on the top row. I am trying to add a cross dissolve to the end of the map footage so the transition between the map disappearing and the pool being shown in full is not so sharp.
However, I cannot add a cross dissolve to the top row edit in the same way I can to the bottom row.
I have recreated the problem below.
1 - When adding to the top row, the cross dissolve highlights the whole clip.
2 - when I drop the cross dissolve in, it appears at the start and end of the clip and creates a black box behind the clip on the timeline. When this box appears, I get a quicktime error when I try to share the film. I can then delete either of the cross dissolves, but I cannot delete the black box
3 - when I add the cross dissolve to my bottom row, I have no such problems. The dissolve drops easily between two clips.
This is not an issue with the length of my top row clips. I have tested and checked.
This seems to be a bug when adding cross dissolve to a top row edit.
Has anybody else experienced this? Any ideas why this happens?
    Thanks, Dan

Thanks for putting me right on the background box Luis.
I re-rendered, but this hasn't fixed my problem.
However I now think that the problem is with the map image. When I remove it, I can share my file.
    Two things to try:
    1) Don't rerender; turn off background rendering; delete render files once more and try
    2) You may be right that the problem may be with the map image. So: what format, and size is it?
Does the export work if you replace it with some other image (but otherwise do the same edit you wanted)?
If you want, send me the file by e-mail and I will try it here. (My address is in my profile)

  • Problem with cross dissolve transitions

I had several short interview clips that I had made into several short Imovies. I wanted to combine the interviews into one longer movie. Each short clip has an intro clip.
The problem occurs when I copy each short clip and paste into the long version. The beginning and end of each clip is clipped somewhat. I think this might be because it's making a new cross dissolve from an existing cross dissolve?
When I remove everything but the interview clip from the short movies then paste into the longer version this problem doesn't happen. Any idea why this might be happening?

If you made the short clips by export the movie with the intro there is probably no extra media available to make the overlap for the transition. Check the preferences for doing the transition if it's set to all or half. That might help you, but it may just not be possible.

  • Cross Dissolve Transitions Can Be Jumpy

Sometimes in iMovie, some of my cross dissolves in between clips seem a little jumpy.  It's weird.  And then sometimes I get some flashing.  Any ideas as to why this sometimes happens?

Thanks.  Unfortunately, I'm usually cutting between sentences of someone talking, where there's no "extra" to work with beyond the out point.  So what I want is for the end of the first clip to be the absolute end, and for the audio fade of the transition to apply to the last second or two of that clip (so it's fading down to the end point, not from the end point onward).  Does that mean I need to set the out point a second or so before where I really want the clip to end?  And if so, how do I know where to set it so the absolute end will be where it's supposed to be?

  • Cross Dissolve Transition has a black frame

Which makes photo blink or flash...it is definitely in the transition...does anyone have any idea how to avoid or fix this? Thanks

It actually deals with titles over black, so a bit different to your problem Lawayne. Look at the 2nd page and the post by Christoferi and follow-ups by people who found it worked for them.
Personally, I wouldn't mess with System files without getting expert, professional advice - who knows what other problems may arise if the Quartz Composer Patches folder is deleted. I guess you could try moving it gingerly to the Desktop, then testing iMovie. Note that if you proceed with this, the advice in the tread is to shutdown and restart afterwards. But, please proceed with CAUTION (wise to have a Time Machine backup, or other backup).
But try my QuickTime plug-in suggestion first, as described earlier.

PS. Just re-read the other thread. You need to also check the folder MacIntosh HD/Library/Graphics. One user reported that there was a Quartz Composer Patches folder in that location, containing 5 files. On my system, I don't have that folder in that location - only in the System folder (35 files).
