Section Marker Spacing

I'm in InDesign CS4 on a Mac - I've created text based Section Markers for a book and for some weird reason there is no spacing between the words for each Section Marker "Title".  There are spaces for each title when I entered them in the "Numbering and Section Options" menu so I'm slightly confused.
ie:
This is what I get: ThisIsTheTitle
This is what I want: This Is The Title
Any suggestions?

I've noticed this, too. If the section marker is used on a master page the text shows up as "Section", when it picks up compresses to fit on a single line, so if the text box isn't wide enough to fit the text, it compresses it to fit on a single line. (The word and letter spacing is ignored). Like so:

  • Marker spacing (bug?)

I have a program that periodically gets updated with different z scale intensity graph max and min values (which are used to establish the range of a color table) .  I want the user to have the option of specifying the number of marker intervals but I seem to have run into a bit of a bug.  As it turns out, "uniform marker spacing" is not in fact uniform if the scale goes into the negative range.  It seems that the scale must always increment with respect to the 0 marker regardless of where i specify the start range property to be.
Case in point, look at the VI I've attached.  I have a scale from - 100 to 100, and I try to divide it into 5 even intervals. Ideally, the scale markers would just read 100, 60, 20, -20, 60, 100.  Instead, because it chooses to always use 0 as the increment reference, it reads 100 80, 40, 0, 40, 80, -100.  Does anyone know of a way around this?

I haven't tested the following theory:
A scale has 5 properties: Min, Max, Major Increment, Minor Increment, Start.
I think that the Start will allways be at a marker value, so I think that changing the Start to 'Min' will get you where you want.

  • Layout Margins | Second page of section marked 'first page is different'

I have some custom formatting for the first page of a section, marked in Inspector with 'First page is different': with a 3cm upper margin to set text to start below a banner image embedded in the section master.
However the second page of that section is not settable with a separate layout margin, and since the the banner on the second page is different, I need it to be.
    Any ideas?

    j,
You would have to put the Page Break and Section Break into your Template, so you would begin with two pages and two layouts already there.
You are getting into Page Layout territory here. At some point it's just easier to pre-define the whole document in a Page Layout format. It all depends on where you are going with this.

  • Slide Marker spacing limits-need help quick

I have to have this project ready today. pls help.
I imported 90 slides. They are set at the default transistion of 4 seconds. I inserted various dissolves and other transistions into them, thus the display time is somewhere around 2:19 seconds per slide. (This I assume, allows for the head and tail of the transistion). Set to "fit to music". I have a seven minute track. It plays through the simulator just fine. When I try to burn a disc, I get an error message " the marker spacing must be at least 4 seconds".
What markers? Does the program set a marker at each slide? How do I get around this? According to the manual, your supposed to be able to use at least 99 slides. There is no reference to the markers and error message anywhere in the documentation.

A slideshow in DVDSP is really just a fancy track. Each slide on this track is seperated by a chapter marker to allow the user to skip through the photos. Per DVD spec a chapter marker cannot be located less that .4 seconds from the end of a given track. Possibly for some reason, DVDSP thinks there should be a marker somewhere near then end of one of your tracks or slideshows.
The ability to convert a slideshow to a track has several advantages including adding subtitles, alternate language streams and the ability to combine moving video with slides. It will also let you see all the chapter markers and if one is causing a problem.

  • Add Style in Section Marker

    Hi all
I have a 4 page document, each page has different running head. So I placed Section Marker in master page. Now I am fine, in my 2nd page running head my Section Marker should be
    MY TITLE AND YOUR TITLE.
the word AND should be ITALIC character style?
How can I apply this? any one had experience this before?
    thanks in advance

Section markers contain text only, no formatting. There's no way to do
what you want with the section marker.
You didn't mention version. ID CS3 and CS4 will let you use variables,
which *also* cannot contain formatting, but you might be able to use two
or three variables on the master page, like
    {My Title variable} and {Your Title variable}
I've never tried it, but another option might be nested styles. Nested
styles would only work if there was a consistent pattern (i.e., after 3
words, or after one colon, or up to 3 spaces, etc.). Again, I've never
tried it, but I don't think you can include an end-of-nested-style
character in a section marker or variable (but let me know if I'm wrong).
Of course, for 4 pages, setting up section markers or variables is more
work than just typing the running head locally on each page. Are you
sure you didn't mean 40 or 400 page document?

  • Find/Change in Section Marker

I would like to have a Find/Change Text or GREP option which also can Find/Change the text in the Section Marker. While working with books and magazines i use the Section Marker a lot (which you can find in the Numbering & Section Options panel). Already had the unpleasant encounter with unchanged text in the Section Marker a several times.
I think this is a effective feature to add...
If you know a solution, i am very interested!
    Best regards,
    dtpartner

I used it to insert new running heads per chapter. Insert the Section Marker symbol into a large enough text frame onto a single master page. Then set every chapter to use a new section, and copy its title into the Section Marker field in the Page Numbering panel.
Using variables is alike, but much easier, because you define the variable to pick up the latest text in a style named so-and-so, and then you don't have to worry anymore about did-I-add-a-section-already and what-if-I-insert-pages. It's all in the Help.
[Added] And if the chapter title changes, the variable is updated automatically.

  • Smart quotes in section marker text

How do I insert a smart quotation mark (or the base font quotation mark) into section text? Right now, an apostrophe looks like a tear drop.

Either ALT + key code (don't know for english Indesign) or menu Type -> Special characters -> Quotation marks -> Single Left quotation mark.

  • How to insert section marks and paragraph symbols?

To insert something like paragraph symbols (option/alt + &) on the iPad keyboard is not possible, you would need apple keyboard for iPad or a bluetooth wireless keyboard to do so.

  • Variable section prefix or marker

    Hello,
I'm working on a book with numerous chapters and would like to number the chapter pages as follows
    1-1, 1-2, 1-3,.....
    2-1, 2-2, 2-3,......
    etc.
where x-y represents (chapter number)-(page number). This format also needs to be in the table of contents.
I've looked at section marker and section prefix, however it looks like these are text markers, not variables. Right now I don't know the final order of the chapters, so ideally I need the section marker or prefix to be a chapter number variable.
Is it possible to do this?
    Thanks you.

I ran bash, assuming that would refresh env... wrong.

  • Case messed up on section markers in CS2

A client of mine is forcing me to use CS2 (she hasn't upgraded yet). I've come across a reproducible bug - anyone got a fix for this?
Add a section marker to a page, say the word "contents" in lower case. Then go to a master page and, in a text box, insert special character : section marker. Make that All Caps using the case button on the toolbar (or in a style).
When I go to a regular page, I see "cONTENTS". Nothing that I can do seems to be able to fix this. Unfortunately, I need to type it in lower case because I also have the section name repeated in lower case elsewhere on the page, and ID can't force lower case something.
    Help?

That's a really good idea, but I can't guarantee we'll never use small caps elsewhere (it's a magazine).
I sort of got around the problem by adding a space at the beginning of the section name - so it's forcing the lower case on the space. It messes up the spacing in a couple of places, but that's a lot easier to deal with.
I'd still love a real fix, if anyone knows of one...

  • Generate TOC with Section Markers?

It's been a while since I've had to setup and create a TOC for a single file long document, but I'm pretty sure that I've created TOCs this way in the past. So, why won't the text in Section Markers show up in the TOC? Is it even possible to generate a TOC that has Section Marker text?
I'm using InDesign CS5 in Windows. I've got a single file document that I'm trying to generate a TOC for. I've designed a 16 page handbook in one inDesign file which includes a Cover page, TOC page, and seven "chapters".
I created separate sections for each "chapter" and used Section Markers at the top of the Master page for the chapter names. This is something I've done in the past for single file long documents with multiple chapters.
I've set the first page of each "chapter" as a new Section on the Pages panel. In the Numbering and Section Options for each page, I've checked Start Section, Automatic Page Numbering, Page Numbering Style: 1,2,3,4... and in Section Marker: I've put the "chapter" name in the text box.
I set up Paragraph and and Character Styles and used them throughout my document. When I set up the TOC I set up everything correctly, including my Section Marker style for the chapter names and a heading style that I used for all the sub headings in my file.
When I insert the TOC, the sub headings with their page numbers generate but the chapter headings which are Section Markers do not generate. Am I missing something or is it even possible to include the text for Section Markers in a TOC? I'm sure that it's worked in the past. Can anyone offer a solution for this?
    thanks,
    Kat

awesome! ...worked like a charm. I knew I was forgetting something.

  • Define Sections in a single Indesign Document

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a problem with Sections (Chapters) in Indesign. I have been able to define sections in a book and it works fine automatically changing section numbers etc.
However, due to a book crashing problem, I am trying to create a single file with sections.
I have made one with faux sections using separate spreads for each chapter and using chapter specific paragraph styles but i would like to use defined chapters and auto numbering so it will be easier for others to use the template.
In my test document i have a chapter page and then 3 normal pages followed by a chapter page and 3 normal pages etc. The Chapter page has an auto chapter number and the normal pages have an auto chapter number in the footer.
In the image below: page 7 and 11 are the chapter pages, 8-10, 12-13 are normal pages. (Not all pages are shown)
I right click the chapter page (P7) and select Numbering and Section Options. I have clicked Start Section and also specified a Chapter Number as shown below.
I then specify start section and Chapter 2 from the numbering and section options for page 11.
The problem is that when i specify the chapter for the next section, that number is being used for all sections. So in the example above, p7 becomes chapter 2 after changing the options for p11.
Is there something i am missing or can it not be done in a non book document?

Correct, you cannot do different chapter numbers in a document... they must be the same chapter.
Chapters need to be separate documents and in a book file.
I suggest section markers under special characters menu instead of page numbers on the chapter page master.
then under number and section dialoge box, type the section marker name.

  • Question about section numbering in InDesign CS3

How do I use section numbering (1-1, 2-1, etc.) throughout a book document? I have a Current Page Number at bottom center of each Master page and want to include the Chapter Number and a hyphen before the Current Page Number. I want to start numbering over with each chapter. Also, I would like to find out how to use a running header of the Chapter name in the Master Pages. Thank you.

There is a distinction between chapter and section numbers. Also, Book can have a special meaning, so let's see if we can clear up some stuff here, first.
Is this a single document which you are dividing into logical chapters by uing sections in Pages panel Numbering and Section Options, or an InDesign Book, which is a collection of individual documents, each of which might be one of your chapters, and each of which might also contain multiple sections. An individual document can contain many sections, each of which may have a prefix and a section marker, both of which are accessible for use in numbering pages, but an individual document can have only one chapter number.
